The upcoming show at the Farm and Home Center will provide the general public an opportunity to learn more about them and perhaps even pique their collective interest. “The best part of the show is that everyone can learn something new about fossils and minerals in a fun atmosphere,” said Christopher Haefner, the president of the L ancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club (LCFMC), the sponsor of the show. “Fossils and minerals are important because they teach us a lot about the Earth’s history, they give us resources for industrial use and economic prosperity, and they have an everlasting beauty that can be enjoyed by current and future generations.” The LCFMC’s annual Christmas in July Fossil and Mineral Extravaganza is coming up at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. This year’s edition of the educational vendor show will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, and from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 26. There are modest cash fees associated with attending the show. “The atmosphere is upbeat and lively,” said Haefner. “The purpose of the show is to give members of the community the opportunity to see and purchase unique fossils, minerals, crystals and handmade jewelry and to emphasize a fun atmosphere where parents

From Ethiopian specialties to Caribbean flavors, Taste of the Nations will bring the cuisines of more than 10 countries together under one roof while raising funds for Hope Within Ministries. The annual benefit for the nonprofit will be held on Thursday, Oct. 1, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, 996 E. High St. Although the event is a few months away, people are encouraged to purchase tickets soon, said Laurie Reichert, director of development for Hope Within. “Admission is on sale now and available through (Wednesday,) Sept. 30, or until sold out,” she said. “Last year, this event sold out, so purchase admission now.” The event will feature an international culinary experience, with proceeds benefiting the organization located in Elizabethtown. “Guests will visit each food table - each representing a country - to sample a food item native to that respective country. There will also be some American food and a dessert table,” Reichert shared. “We had 10 countries represented last year. This year we have a lot of those returning and have added additional food tables, including Canada, Caribbean and Philippines.” Other countries that will be represented include Ethiopia, Afghanistan, China, Thailand, India, Ukraine and Russia. Along with food, a silent auction will feature curated items from around the world.

In addition, the event will feature more than seven educational displays and presentations about topics like how rocks are processed for jewelry and the optical effects of minerals and will have demonstrations of pencil drawings of dinosaurs and fossils. More than 600 individuals from Lancaster County and sur rounding communities are expected to attend during the two days of Christmas in July Fossil and Mineral Extravaganza. The show was established
in 2014 at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ in Mountville, before moving to the Solanco Fairgrounds. The extravaganza has been staged at its current location since 2021. LCFMC also hosts an annual one-day show at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, 450 W. Main St., Mountville, in the fall - this year on Saturday, Nov. 7. The nonprofit organization is also planning a fossil safari event later this year. “Members of LCFMC enjoy sharing their collective knowledge of fossils and minerals with others to pass on their knowledge and enthusiasm to current and future generations,” said Haefner. “LCFMC shares this interest through its shows,

The auction will begin on the Pennsylvania Lottery Stage at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 28. The auction will include Elizabethtown Fair commemorative crocks filled with arrangements by local florists. Also featured at the annual auction will be the premium book cover artwork hand-painted on a bell by Nancy Landis, local artist, which will be auctioned off at 9 p.m. Landis is a lifelong Lan-
caster County resident. She has enjoyed providing the annual premium book cover for many years. It has been so much fun working with him on this book, and I love that it’s a project that we can do together.” Her biggest challenge in writing the book series has been finding the time to write. “Like most people, I’m ver y busy with lots of commitments, and writing often gets put at the bottom of my priority list,” she said. “I like to pray before I write, inviting God to help me, especially on those busy days, and I believe He does.” K athy is currently working on book three, “The Back to School Fuel Tool,” which focuses on helping families navigate school lunches and choose healthier options. It will be released in August , before children head back to school. The new Weaver Awards from the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) promote, advocate for and celebrate weaving - not the textile, yarns or thread type, but the social fabric kind. “A weaver is someone who sees a need and invites their neighbors to pitch in and find a solution,” said Val Schade, LCCF’s communications manager. “They understand that a healthy community strengthens all of us and creates opportunities to build strong, lasting relationships in everyday places. A weaver may lead a monthly river cleanup, or have started a board game club for seniors, or host a book club or lead a group of stay-at-home parents. There are so many ways you can build lasting relationships and weave our community together.” Through a national Weaver Awards program, LCCF is distributing 20 awards of $2,500 - a total of $50,000 - to people or small organizations that foster connections in Lancaster County. Individuals or nonprofits can apply for or nominate others for the awards at www.weave lancastercounty.org through Friday, July 24. Applicants must be 18 or older, serve or reside in Lancaster County, have a project that fosters relationships and be welcoming to any neighbor seeking to participate in the initiative. Organizations that
apply must have an annual budget below $250,000. All completed applications will be reviewed by Lancaster County Weaver Awards team members and community members. Successful recipients of the awards will be notified in September, and winners will be recognized at a public celebration on Thursday, Oct. 1. “We know that no matter the size of their platform or influence, weavers are the ones seeing needs and inviting their neighbors to pitch in and find a solution,” said Tracy Cutler, LCCF’s executive vice president. “They’re the ones creating opportunities to build strong, lasting relationships in their own backyards, on their blocks, at the park or in the coffee shop. They’re doing things like creating gardens, managing regular creek cleanups, organizing walking groups or hosting clubs at libraries. VisionCor ps held its annual Eye Drop fundraiser on June 5 at the Holiday Inn Lancaster. Almost 100 people, including those who are blind or vision impaired, rappelled in the event, which raises funds to support vision rehabilitation services for people with low vision in Lancaster, Adams, Chester, Lebanon, and York counties. People from across

To u c h s to n e Fo u n d a tion has been awarded $255,766 throu g h the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) grant program to support the expansion and strengthening of its Rise Above program. Launched in 2022, Rise Above was created to help eliminate stigma surrounding youth mental wellness while empowering young people with tools for resilience, self-awareness, and advocacy. The program brings mental wellness programming and youth mentorship to Lancaster County schools for students in grades seven through 12 as well as to young adults ages 18 to 26 in community groups. The program seeks to create inclusive spaces that foster belonging, reduce stigma , and encourage open conversations about mental health.
