Making a Splash at 8 Years Old

She’s only 8 years old, but Dani Heim is already breaking records in the pool. The swimmer, who is the daughter of Dan and Sarah Heim of Elizabethtown, became the first girl in the 8-and-under age group to complete a 1,650-meter swim, also known as a “mile swim.”

She logged 66 laps for the feat, but, in true youth fashion, she pushed for one more lap, so she’d finish with 67. (If you have youngsters at home, you no doubt understand why.)

“My mind went berserk when I was swimming,” Dani recalled. “I was like, ‘Am I going to finish this?’”

Her parents credit her ability to pace herself with her strong finish. Rather than diving in and expending all her energy like she might do in a short race, Dani kept it slow and steady.

“I’m very, very impressed with her,” Sarah said, noting that she stood poolside counting the laps as Dani swam. “She just kept going and going. She would look up at me every now and then, and I would cheer her on, and she’d keep going.”

That last lap, Dani said, was just for fun; she called it a “cool-down” lap.

Dani has been swimming for most of her life.

“I started swimming with my dad when I was 2, and I got on my first swim team at 4,” she said.

She joined the Elizabethtown Aquatic Club (EAC), which is part of the Central PA Aquatic League (CPAL).

She tried out for USA Swimming just three weeks after turning 8, and she quickly swept her age group events and earned her first of several USA Middle Atlantic Championships qualifying times at her first USA Swimming meet.

With CPAL, she’s helped her team

Lancaster Railway Society Celebrates 90th Anniversary

The Lancaster Chapter, National Railway Historical Society (NRHS), which aims to preserve history and railroad artifacts, as well as educate the public about railroading and its history, is in the middle of celebrating its 90th anniversary.

According to a history of the Lancaster Chapter, NRHS, provided by chapter historian Linda Himpsl, it began in 1934 when a few young railroad and trolley enthusiasts met in an old trolley in Neffsville, forming the Lancaster Railway & Locomotive Historical Society. In 1935, the group merged with the Interstate Trolley Club and other organizations to form the NRHS. The Lancaster Chapter was the first charter organized in the NRHS, launching on Oct. 13, 1935.

It’s something many of us don’t like to think about, but it’s something that will happen to every one of us. Death is a natural part of human existence, and, while it may seem tempting to ignore this reality, it’s important to plan for this stage.

With that in mind, Mount Joy Church of God will host “Planning for Life’s Final Season.” The talk will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, at the church, 30 E. Main St., Mount Joy.

Today, chapter meetings are held in the 1882 freight station in Christiana, which was restored by the chapter in 1998. Members, who come from various backgrounds, all share a love of railroading. “Most people have an interest in railroads, history or just trains in general. Very few of us actually worked for the railroad,” noted Steve Himpsl, second director. “Some have model trains. They are avid collectors.”

“Some have fathers or grandfathers who worked the railroad,” added Linda.

Last October, chapter members and invited guests celebrated the

Paul and I were immensely blessed by Jonathan and Rhoda Charles in 2013, as they entrusted us with a thriving business they had, had for 33 years. It has been a blessing for these past 13 years to be entrusted with people’s special moments.

As many of you may know Paul passed away unexpectedly June 21, 2025. I have tried to honor him and the business this past year as best I could. We’ve had some great local photographers help out, but at this point, it is no longer Paul Jacobs Photography. Paul’s passing has created a huge hole in my family’s life and brought home to me how very short life can be. As I enter retirement age, I want to spend it with my family and friends and not work the many hours it takes to have a successful business. So, at this time I have made the difficult decision to close Paul Jacobs Photography in June. We will take photos until the end of May then hopefully have everything printed by the end of June. We will NOT be doing any graduations. We do ask that if there are photos you would like to purchase, please do so before the end of May.

To our customers, I thank you for your patronage and loyalty all these years. Thank you for your patience this past year with all the changes. I carry many fond memories of all the photographs taken of athletes, dancers, preschoolers, seniors, families and much, much more.

Sincerely,

101 Years Young

Marking her 101st birthday on March 12, Janet Harple said she comes by her long life genetically.

“My mother lived to be 101 and a half,” Janet stated with a smile.

To celebrate her milestone, Janet enjoyed cake with friends at Paramount Senior Living in Maytown, where she has lived for the past three years.

“I like it here,” she said. “You meet nice people, and it’s a place where I don’t have to cook. I don’t have to clean.”

Born Janet Derr in Hollidaysburg, Janet was the youngest of five children.

“I had three brothers and a sister,” she said. “I’m the only one still here.”

Her father was a construction worker, and he brought the family with him as he traveled around to jobs.

“One year, we attended four different schools and my mother said, ‘Now, that’s the end of that,’” Janet recalled with a laugh. “She said, ‘We’re not traveling with your father anymore.’”

The family settled in the Elizabethtown area, and when she was a teenager, Janet got a job at the Marietta Depot, where she helped load and unload boxcars.

“I drove a forklift,” she said. “I drove three different sizes, including a high lift that went way up high.”

She enjoyed that job, which she did for about seven years before she quit to stay home with her son, Dennis.

After she divorced her first husband, Clyde Kaylor, and she married Robert “Bob” Harple in 1963, a friend she’d known for a long time.

He brought four children to the marriage, and

the couple had a daughter, Melissa, together.

In addition to staying busy raising the kids, Janet worked as a waitress at various locations, including the Hillcrest Supper Club in Elizabethtown and the Watering Trough in Mount Joy.

She also took an active role in the Women of the Moose, Elizabethtown Chapter 701.

“I am an 82-year member of the Women of the Moose,” she said proudly.

Over the years, she served as chair of most of the Women of the Moose committees, held additional leadership positions within her chapter - including serving as Junior Regent and Senior Regent - and earned the College of Regents, the highest honor for a member in her respective chapter.

From 1969 to 1970, she was appointed by the International Women of the Moose to serve as Deputy Grand Regent of Eastern Pennsylvania. From 1976 to 1978, she was appointed to serve on the International Grand Council.

In 1988, Janet became the International Grand Regent, which is the highest appointment granted to the International Women of the Moose. She considers this to be her greatest life achievement.

Today, she doesn’t regularly attend meetings or activities with the club, but she’s still a proud member of the group.

Throughout her life, Janet has shown that when she sets her mind to something, she accomplishes her goal.

When her heart doctor told her to quit smoking

after she had a pacemaker installed, she immediately acted.

“I took my cigarettes out of my pocketbook, and I put them in my freezer for a year so I wouldn’t touch them,” she recalled. “After a year, I decided I could throw them out.”

She also drove until she was 93 years old.

“Then I said to myself one day, ‘Janet, you can’t see very well. You take this car home, put it in the carport and don’t you dare drive it again,’” she recalled. “And I didn’t.”

Janet enjoyed a long marriage to Bob, who passed away several years ago, and she credits a ritual she shared with him as the secret to her long life.

“I used to drink a Manhattan every night,” she said. “After my husband retired, I said, ‘We need to have a happy hour.’ He liked beer, so he would drink a beer, and I’d have a Manhattan.”

Although she uses a wheelchair to get around these days, Janet is in good health.

Around Paramount, she’s known for her feistiness and her mental acuity.

“I like eating and talking with my friends here,” she said. “I also like to play bingo. I can’t play card games, because I can’t see the cards very well, but I like bingo.”

For the birthday celebration, everyone in the full dining room serenaded Janet with “Happy Birthday” before they all shared cake.

Janet smiled and posed for photos, thanking everyone for the party.

“It’s been a wonderful day,” she said.

milestone during a chapter meeting at the freight station where they enjoyed cake and ice cream and a display of memorabilia dating from 1934 to the present.

There was also a chapter banquet held at Hershey Farm Resort in November. Tony White, NRHS president, presented the Lancaster Chapter a Certificate of Recognition for its 90th anniversary and for being the first charter chapter of the organization. In addition to Steve and Linda, accepting the certificate were Tom Shenk, president; Glenn Kendig, first vice president; Cindy Kendig, first director; Richard Ruttledge, treasurer; David Stambaugh, second vice president; and member Gayle Stambaugh.

One of the chapter’s major accomplishments was the restoration of the freight station, located at 10 Railroad Ave., Christiana. Notably, the station was featured in the 1985 movie “Witness” starring Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis.

According to Linda, the two-story building was

moved east 40 feet to its present location in 1903 to install additional track. Passenger service ceased in 1907, when the new Christiana passenger station on the opposite side of the tracks was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad; it terminated service in 1952. Amtrak now leases the 1888 freight station building, gang house, 1907 passenger station and trackside property to the Lancaster Chapter, NRHS. The chapter also maintains a Conrail caboose on-site.

In addition to a holiday open house held during Christmas in Christiana, the stations is open for tours by appointment.

“We have a deck and we often have people come and hang out on the deck and watch the trains,” Steve said. “We want to get people into the station and to view the caboose.”

The Lancaster Chapter, NRHS members have restored, preserved and donated many train- and rail-related projects to Lancaster County and surrounding communities through the years, includ -

ing a trolley from Lancaster, a Reading Railroad Company crossing watchman’s box and various railroad cars. The chapter has also organized Amtrak rail trips to many places, including Horseshoe Curve; western Pennsylvania; and Mystic Seaport, Conn. “Amtrak would add passenger cars on their trains to accommodate how many tickets were sold,” Steve explained. “We would sell 18-car trains.”

The group generally meets on the third Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. Meetings usually feature a guest speaker or a slideshow of railroad history. Outings are also planned. “We (might meet) at Strasburg Rail Road and ride the train, and when it comes back we have our meeting on the train. We mix it up,” noted Linda.

Members pay a yearly

fee, which gets them the Lancaster Dispatcher, the chapter’s monthly newsletter. New members are welcome. “Many young people are not interested in railroading anymore because they did not grow up with it,” noted Steve. “We are more than happy to have young people come in and join us.”

More information about the Lancaster Chapter, NRHS, including upcoming meetings, is available at www.nrhs1.org or www .facebook.com/Christiana FreightStation. For more information or to schedule a tour of the freight station, contact Steve at shimpsl @aol.com.

Additionally, the first floor of the freight station is available for rent and can accommodate 60 to 80 people. If interested, email cindykendig@gmail.com.

Car Racing Journey to Support PBCC

Jim Roberts of Mount Joy will compete in the 2026 One Lap of America. His participation will support the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC).

For the second year, his transit driver will be Rich Grant, a member of the Northern Virginia Corvette Club. Roberts and Grant will use Roberts’ new orange C8 Corvette and travel to various race tracks in Indiana, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Colorado, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Illinois. Roberts will do all the competitive driving on the tracks, and Grant will help to drive the highway miles and maintain the car. The duo will travel about 3,400 miles for the event

and almost 4,500 miles by the time he arrives back home in just over a week. Along the way, they will compete against about 90 other teams.

This will be Roberts’ 17th time competing in One Lap of America. Over the past several years, he has raised more than $60,000 in total for PBCC. In October 2024 at the PBCC’s pre-conference Pink Party at the Hilton Hotel, Roberts received the Pennsylvania Shining Light Award for raising more than $50,000.

Roberts will place a sticker on the roof of the Corvette in honor of each person who donates. The donor’s name or the name of someone the donor

Model Railroad Club Sets Open Houses

The Masonic Village and Elizabethtown Model Railroad Club’s train layout includes various scenery.

The Masonic Village and Elizabethtown Model Railroad Club will hold open houses on Saturday and Sunday, April 11 and 12, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Attendees will be able to watch trains of seven different scales running on more than 1,600 feet of track in the club’s space, which features new scenes.

Admission is free, and donations will be accepted.

The Model Railroad Club building is on Freemason Drive on the grounds of Masonic Village in Elizabethtown.

The train club welcomes new members, and interested individuals may speak to current members at the open house. For more information, call 717-287-2086 or

and earned several individual top finishes across the league this season.

Along with becoming the first girl in her age group to complete the 1,650-meter swim in the EAC’s 35-year history, she broke records for the club in the 200 free and the 500 free.

“I love to be in the water,” Dani said. “I like it because when it touches my skin, it makes me feel ready to go, ready to push off. My favorite part of swimming is when I dive in. I like the way the water feels going straight up my body.”

Her parents note that they never have to nag Dani about attending swim practice, which takes place almost every day of the week during the main season from September through March.

“She would live in the pool if we let her,” Sarah said. “When we’re running late to practice, she’ll be in the car honking the horn.”

Dani comes by her talent naturally. Her father was a competitive swimmer in his youth, and she said she gets her drive from him.

Her mother, however, is a different story.

“I’m teaching my mom how to swim, because she’s just learning how,” Dani said.

When she’s not in the water, Dani, who is a third-grader at Bear Creek School, enjoys playing with her friends; going to Sixers games; playing basketball, soccer and chess; hiking; and spending time with her dog, Gunnar.

and summer, including open-water lake swimming.

She swims year-round and, even though she’s only in elementary school, she has lofty goals.

“I want to make it to the Olympics,” she said.

While she loves almost everything about swimming, she’s not a huge fan of having to get up early for meets and battling her tech swimsuit, which she says is very hard to put on.

But that’s not enough to keep her on dry land.

“I think being positive and being a good sport is what you need most to be a good swimmer and for other sports,” she said. “If somebody came up to me and said, ‘What makes you confident to get in the water, and how can I push myself?’ I would say, ‘Just do your best. Try hard and be a good sport.’”

Stewardship consultant

Lynette Morales and certified financial planner and financial consultant Lisa McHenry will present the program.

“The conversation will be looking at how to make decisions about our ‘final season,’” said Adam Swarr, pastor of family ministries for Mount Joy Church of God. “How do we decide what to put in our will and plan for what happens afterward? It will also look at things like preplanning medical decisions through a living will and other aspects of planning for our future health, financial and emotional aspects as we age.”

Swarr understands this subject well, he said.

“Before getting into ministry, I was a licensed financial adviser for over a decade, so I know from experience this is a topic that most people haven’t thought about or are unprepared for,” he remarked. “Even people that put plans together find out there were things they didn’t think about it or plan for. My hope is that those in attendance will learn a few things they can use to make educated decisions about what’s best for themselves and their families.”

The talk offers a way for the church to interact with people outside its congregation, he said.

“Our church has always had a focus on the community, but this year we wanted to take it to the next level, and part of that is putting on a series of educational talks,” he stated. “We did a parenting event in February, now this one, and we have other events in the works for the fall.”

Both Morales and McHenry work for Everence, a financial planning company that serves Mount Joy and surrounding areas. Morales’ background includes more than 15 years of experience in the financial industry, providing guidance to pastors, churches and congregations in areas of stewardship and financial ministries. McHenry serves as an investment adviser representative and is a licensed insurance agent, providing clients with financial planning, retirement and life transition navigation and investment management and socially responsible investments.

Swarr hopes people will attend to ensure a steady future for the family they leave behind when they die.

“With my background as a financial adviser, I’ve seen bad situations when someone hasn’t planned for that final season. I’ve seen families torn apart after someone passes away, fighting over how to handle things,” he said. “It’s all unnecessary. Having a proper plan can save a lot of heartache, fighting and oftentimes money. It’s always been my passion to educate people. Our church wants to be a community resource, so we are trying to provide free opportunities to help those around us by teaching them practical tools they can use to improve their lives.”

No tickets are required to attend the talk, but people are asked to register at www .mountjoychurchofgod.org to ensure there is enough seating for everyone. Light refreshments will be available at the event.
