Dive Into “Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr.”

You’re invited to travel under the sea when Elizabethtown Area Middle School presents “Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr.”

The show will be performed in the auditorium of the high school, 600 E. High St., at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 27, and at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 28.

“This is a really fun show, and

it’s kind of nostalgic in a way,” said eighth-grader Anastazia Colon, who portrays Sebastian the crab in the musical. “I’m basing my character on the movie. I want to try to embody that as much as possible, because I think it’s more fun for the kids to see the character they’re expecting on stage.”

To portray Sebastian, she’s been perfecting an island accent.

“It was hard at first, but now it’s

just coming naturally,” she said. “I’m having a lot of fun with it.”

And although she’s a crab, she’ll be dressed in a more human-like ensemble.

“I’m all in red, but it’s a really glammed-up costume,” she said.

Her favorite songs in the show include “Under the Sea” and “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” performed by EmaLeigh Darrow, who plays the sea witch Ursula.

We all know the story of “Cinderella,” but when students at Mount Calvary Christian School present their spring musical, audiences are in for a few surprises.

“It’s the traditional story of ‘Cinderella,’ but the characters are a lot more developed than in the animated movie,” said Daniel Hess, who portrays Prince Christopher in the show. “You get to meet the royal family and the steward. You get to know the characters better.”

Bringing Hope Home

Whether you want to go out or stay in, you can support Brittany’s Hope when the nonprofit holds its annual gala, Brittany’s Ball. The festivities will include an in-person event on Saturday, April 11, from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Star Barn at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. The fundraiser will also include an online auction that will run from now through April 11 at 8 p.m.

“The theme of the gala is ‘Welcome Home,’” said Dana Myers, director of charitable giving for Brittany’s Hope, an organization that supports orphaned and at-risk children. “When guests arrive, they will be greeted with doors showcasing a few of the 1,617 children who have been welcomed home. There is a silent/online auction during the cocktail hour.”

Guests will then be welcomed upstairs to an elegant dinner and multifaceted presentation, featuring Bryan Stevenson of Red Beard Soul singing “Welcome Home.”

“In addition, children and young adults who are now home due in part because of the generosity of the people in the room will be joining in the celebration,” Myers said. “The featured speaker will be the Smith family, who welcomed home Mimi in December of last year. Guests at last year’s gala helped to make her homecoming possible. Seeing their family and hearing their story will be a phenomenal testament to the power of the miracles that occur when we come together to achieve a goal.”

The gala will also feature opportunities to bid on live auction packages, as well as Mission Moments, which include

“She is so good,” Anastazia said. “She’s amazing.”

For Novianna Cartagena, a seventh-grader who plays the title role, the show has provided an opportunity to step out of her comfort zone in a new environment.

“I just moved here this year, so it’s been a great opportunity to get to know more people,” she said. “I have made so many friends.”

She said she has a lot in common with her character, Ariel.

“She’s a very bubby person, and that matches me,” she noted. “I watched the movie a lot, and I’m having a lot of fun playing this part.”

“The Little Mermaid Jr.” follows the plot of the Disney movie, but it’s a bit shorter, making it perfect for younger audiences. Adapted from the 2008 Broadway production, the show takes place in a magical underwater kingdom where Ariel, a young mermaid, longs to leave the sea and live with the humans on land, including her love interest, Prince Eric. To make her dreams come true, she must defy her father, King Triton, and make a deal with the sea witch.

“One of my favorite parts of the show is when Sebastian is teaching me how to get a little bit romantic,” Novianna said. “He tells

me to flutter my eyes and pucker my lips. It’s funny.”

The musical is directed by Madison Buckley and produced by Danielle Krodel, with vocal direction by Sophia Rulavage.

The cast features more than 100 students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades.

It’s important to the directors that all students who audition get a part in the show, encouraging kids to explore new hobbies and build their self-confidence.

Students also help with painting sets and other behind-the-scenes work.

Additional cast members include Grayson Shelly, who plays Prince Eric; Isaac Jensen, who plays Grimsby; Liam George, who portrays the Pilot; Carter Zimmerman, who plays the Seahorse; Maggie Steele, who portrays King Triton; Adalei Marcarelli, who plays Flounder; Andrew Wagner, who portrays Scuttle; Flora Sirinides and Zoe Binkle, who play Flotsam and Jetsam, respectively; and Ayden Swartzendruber, who portrays Chef Louis.

Tickets for “Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr.” may be purchased online at https://cur8.com/26201/ project/137177 up to two hours before show time. Tickets will also be sold at the door one hour prior to show time. Tickets purchased in person must be paid for by cash only.

Family-Friendly Fun in “Seussical”

The colorful world of Dr. Seuss will leap from the page to the stage when Encore! Home School Productions presents “Seussical,” a musical adventure that weaves together some of the author’s most beloved stories and characters.

The show will be performed at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 29.

Narrated by the Cat in the Hat, the musical follows Horton the Elephant, who discovers a tiny speck of dust that holds an entire world known as Whoville. Among the Whos is Jojo, a child sent to military school because of his overactive imagination. Horton soon finds himself facing two big responsibilities: protecting the Whos from those who refuse to believe they exist and caring for an egg that the carefree Mayzie La Bird leaves in his charge. Along the way, Horton endures ridicule, danger, kidnapping and even a trial, while the loyal Gertrude McFuzz continues to believe in him. In the end, the story celebrates the strength of friendship, loyalty, family and community.

“‘Seussical’ is a combination of about 40 different Dr. Seuss books,” explained Elijah Smith, who plays Horton in the show. “The main storyline follows Horton when he hears a Who and also the sequel to the book where he sits on the egg. It also follows the lives of the Whos down on the dust speck and their troubles and trials.”

Describing the show as “fun and kooky,” Elijah

noted that it’s also full of impactful characters.

“Horton is big-hearted, responsible and he tries to help everyone,” he said. “He does what he can for other people.”

Although he’s portraying an elephant and other students are playing animals, their costumes will reflect more humanistic qualities.

“We want the characters to be seen as actual people, rather than as animals,” he said, adding that the costumes will hint at the animal being portrayed.

Preparing to present “Seussical” has been a lot of fun, Elijah said, especially learning to speak like Dr. Seuss.

“The entire show is in rhyme,” he said. “It’s actually easier to memorize lines when they rhyme, so that’s been great.”

Noah Arnold, who plays the Cat in the Hat, said while it’s been easy to learn his role, the rhyming is also challenging at times.

“The show is all music, so you have to say your lines over music and with a certain rhythm,” he shared.

“It’s been fun, but it’s also been a learning experience. Most of the show is sung, but there are spoken lines in between songs but they’re still spoken over music, so you have to say it to the

rhythm of the music.”

He described his character as “fun and mischievous,” noting that as the narrator, his character pops in here and there throughout the musical.

“This character has been hard to portray, because he’s so well-known,” Noah said. “I’ve studied the character in books, movies and other productions. It’s been fun to play, but it’s also a challenge to live up to.”

Encore’s production of “Seussical” will feature homeschooled students from 16 school districts, including the Hempfield, Elizabethtown and Donegal school districts.

Noah said that while Seussical may seem silly on the surface, with quirky characters such as Yertle the Turtle and the Grinch, it’s actually full of important messages and themes.

“One of the themes is, A person’s a person, no matter how small,’” he said. “We all matter. The show is also about living your life and being yourself and having fun.”

Elijah emphasized that audiences will enjoy seeing actors who fully embrace their characters onstage, and he’s excited to present some really big musical numbers.

“It’s a hilarious show, very entertaining,” he said. “It’s also got very touching stories with great morals.”

Added Noah, “‘Seussical’ is very family-friendly. It’s big. It’s colorful. It’s bright. All of the songs are amazing, and the dancing is great. And there’s a lot of great messages behind the stories.”

The cast of Encore! Home School Productions’ “Seussical”

It’s also a show filled with funny moments, said Sophia Bozell, who plays Grace, one of the stepsisters.

“I think traditionally ‘Cinderella’ hasn’t been looked at as a funny show, but this show is very funny,” she said. “It has a lot of humor in it.”

Mount Calvary Christian School will present “Rod -

gers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella Enchanted Edition” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 26, 27 and 28, with an additional performance at 2 p.m. on March 28. Performances will take place at the school, 629 N. Holly St., Elizabethtown.

Sophia said it’s been a lot of fun embracing a character who’s a bit of a villain.

“I get to play opposite my sister, who is the other stepsister,” she said of Karly Bozell, who portrays Joy. “We get to bounce off each other, and a lot of people say it’s like we’re not even acting because we’re already sisters. We’re more comedic than mean in my eyes. I like to think our characters are funny and silly rather than mean.”

Like the stepsisters in the animated film, the girls will wear over-the-top, loud costumes.

“Our outfits are very obnoxious,” Sophia said with a laugh. “We’re definitely going to stand out.”

Carly Mohr, who plays the title role, said audiences will discover there’s more to the story than a girl who lost a glass slipper.

“I feel like Cinderella the character goes into every situation with kindness,” she said. “In the beginning, she’s unconfident in herself specifically, but really in everything.

Throughout the musical, she grows her confidence through meeting people like the prince and the Fairy Godmother.”

Carly noted that the theme of the show is “finding your identity.”

“There are so many great characters in this show,” she said. “Every age can come see it and find their favorite character.”

The Fairy Godmother will be portrayed by Avalyn

Hostetter, who said she’s thrilled to wear the fancy costume, complete with wings.

“It has a lot of sparkles, which is right up my alley,” she said. “Cover me in sparkles, and I’ll be happy.”

She said audiences may view the Fairy Godmother character as an older, quirky lady, but she’s taking a different approach.

“I’m taking the old part out, but keeping the quirky,” she said. “I’m approaching it in a whimsical way, but I’m also telling Cinderella, ‘You have to believe in yourself before I can help you.’”

The musical will feature a variety of special effects on stage, highlighting the magic of Cinderella’s transformation from rags to a ball gown, among other scenes.

Handmade puppets will be used for characters such as mice who become horses to take Cinderella to the ball.

The show features a cast of more than 40 students in

sixth through 12th grades. Avalyn noted that Carly is her cousin and that Daniel and Elizabeth Hess, the later of whom portrays the queen, are also siblings, so the show is full of authentic moments.

“There’s a lot of fun interactions happening onstage,” she said. Daniel added that audiences can expect to be entertained throughout the entire show.

“‘The Prince Is Giving a Ball’ is such a fun number,” he remarked. “There’s some great choreography and great music in this show.” Avalyn agreed, commenting, “There are so many cool partner lifts, ballet numbers and really great dancing. You’re never going to be bored watching this show.”

Tickets for “Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella Enchanted Edition” are available at https://mcchristianschool .hometownticketing.com/ embed/all and will also be sold at the door.

For the online auction, anyone can participate from anywhere, Myers said.

“There are fabulous items available, from an exclusive weekend couple’s retreat, wonderful spa and beauty packages and a Garmin watch, to foursomes of golf at the Hershey and Lebanon country clubs, fantastic area dining experiences from casual to elegant, wine and alcohol baskets, a Rocky Bleier autographed football and even a hot air balloon ride,” she stated.

Funds raised through the gala and auction will support the work of Brittany’s Hope, an Elizabethtown-based nonprofit.

“One hundred percent of the proceeds of the evening go directly to support the orphaned and abandoned children we serve through

adoption grants to families with the heart to adopt children with special needs and to support the children in our partner children’s homes,” Myers said. “(This allows) even children who have not been adopted to be ‘Welcomed Home’ into a loving family environment, complete with love, education, fun and people who care for and want the best for each child.”

She added that almost everything is donated for the gala and auction, which makes it more challenging to coordinate the event but also more meaningful.

“(It) isn’t the easiest way to put on a gala and auction, but when you’re there and feel the pride of knowing that all these people are here for the children, it’s very impactful,” Myers said. “Even though Brittany’s Hope is a rather small nonprofit in E-town, we are working to solve

CBF Posts Photography Contest

Photographers of all skill levels are invited to submit their images from throughout Pennsylvania’s portion of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed for the annual Save the Bay Photo Contest sponsored by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF).

Photo submissions should illustrate the beauty of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, as well as the plants, animals, and people relying

on it. Images depicting water, wildlife, recreation, farms, and flora will be considered.

In last year’s Save the Bay Photo Contest, the photograph “River’s Bend” by George Kurzik of Hellam won the top prize from judges. His entry captured the view from Chiques Rock in Lancaster County overlooking the bend in the Susquehanna River toward Accomac in York County in 2023.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, March 27. Photos will be narrowed down by a CBF panel based on subject matter, composition, focus, lighting, uniqueness, and impact. Members of the public will then be able to vote for their favorite image in the Viewer’s Choice Gallery from Monday, April 6, to Friday, April 24.

Winners will receive a one-year CBF membership and a cash prize. Winning photographs will also be featured on CBF’s website, social media, 2027 calendar, and award-winning Save the Bay magazine.

More information and submission instructions can be found at www.cbf .org/photocontest.

The winning entry in last year’s Save the Bay Photo Contest was “River’s Bend” by George Kurzik of Hellam.
