When Kim Ramirez started Ta Ta Rebels in 2016, she had a mission to help breast cancer survivors post treatment. As the organization enters its 10th year, that mission continues, and you can help to support it by attending the organization’s Spring Meat Bingo. The bingo will be held on Sunday, April 12, at the Middletown Moose Lodge 410, 100 Mill St., Middletown. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m., and bingo will begin at 1 p.m. “This is also our kickoff to our 10-year Survivors Raise Hope celebrations,” Ramirez said. “There will be 20 games included in the ticket price. There will be two special games for an additional cost - a 50/50 game and a blackout game.” Prizes will include a variety of meat bundles and gift cards. “We are very fortunate to have the Galeton Moose sponsor the bingo, and the Middletown Moose donated the facility,” Ramirez commented. “This has given us the opportunity to upgrade the meat bundles and add gift cards. The meat is provided by Andy’s Market in Columbia. We will have beef and pork roasts, New York strips, sirloin steak, London broil with sirloin tips, chipped beef, boneless breast and pork chops, ham slices, hamburger and patties, Hippey’s hot dogs and gift cards.” Along with the prizes, the event will feature a variety of food for sale, including hamburgers, chicken tenders, hot dogs, fries and assorted drinks. No outside food, cooler bags or lunch bags will be permitted.

Dorwart noted that the Friends are taking a new approach to the sale this year. “A new team has taken over the responsibility for planning and running the book sales and are bringing some fresh ideas and enthusiasm to the table,” she commented. “You’ll see streamlined pricing and checkout. We’ll continue our favorite author sections, offer children’s and adult book sets and book bundles at special prices and have a vintage book table.” She noted that the Friends group is always seeking new members and that people can stop by the bookstore to fill out a membership form or become a member at the book sale. Membership includes admission to the preview days of both sales and a
discount on purchases year-round in the bookstore. “Membership runs from January to December, so if you plan on attending both sales and want free admission to both preview days, now is the time to join,” Dorwart said. “If you are interested in volunteering, there are a number of ways to help. Volunteers might sort through book donations, stock the bookstore shelves or work in the bookstore and/ or at the sale. In the warmer months, volunteers maintain and nurture the garden and courtyard area located in the rear of the library.” Entry to the library is from the back of the building, where there is free parking available in a lot. Elizabeth Hughes Society Posts Meeting The Elizabeth Hughes Society will meet on Monday, March 23, at 6:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown. Dr. George Simms will present on “Broken Glass,” his new book of reflections on his experience of aging, loss, and the search for meaning in life. Society member Carol Hunter will facilitate the discussion, and there will be a question-and-answer period. The meeting is free and open to the public. Simms, a longtime resident of Masonic Village in Elizabethtown, is a retired physician who chaired the Department of Family and Community Medicine in the Penn State University College of Medicine. He was also the founding medical director of hospice at Masonic Village. He holds advanced degrees in medicine, medical ethics, psychology and theology from the University of Zurich, Switzerland; Harvard Divinity School; United States International University in

expense to my already strained finances.” Realizing she was not alone in this challenge, Ramirez wanted to help others. “We are the only resource in Pennsylvania that assists with post-treatment medical expenses related to your breast cancer diagnosis,” she said. “We cover co-pays, deductibles, compression garments, mastectomy bras, prosthesis and therapies. We do have a financial cap of $300 but have assisted with board approval for larger requests.” During its 10-year history, the organization has continued to grow. “We started out as a charitable organization in May 2016, then became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in January 2018,” Ramirez said. “We only offered assistance to Lancaster, Dauphin, York, Lebanon and Perry county residents. By 2021, we were able to offer our programs and services to all Pennsylvania residents and increase our financial assistance yearly cap.” In 2019, the organization implemented its scar tissue release program, and in 2025, it initiated its counseling assistance program, “Let’s Put You Back Together.” “We also assist the newly diagnosed on all the resources available to them while in active treatment,” Ramirez said. Over the years, the organization has fulfilled more than 150 financial and assistance requests. There is a discount for purchasing tickets by 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 11. Tickets will be available at the door if the event is not sold out.
