acy Hartmann is ready for the spotlight. On Feb. 5, the Elizabethtown Area High School junior competed in the Miss Lancaster County Scholarship Organization’s Outstanding Teen competition. Although she didn’t win a title this time around, she said the experience was unforgettable. “I had a lot of fun, and I met so many amazing, authentic women there,” she said. “I was able to talk about something I felt passionate about while hearing the same from others. Rather than being a group of competitors, we were a sisterhood of friends who only wished the best for each other.”

At the competition, held at Ephrata Performing Arts Center, Kacy presented her social impact initiative: Speech Is K.E.Y., with K.E.Y. standing for Knowledge, Experience and Youth Activism. “By giving teens the knowledge of public speaking, the environment to gain experience expressing their ideas and the encouragement to spread youth activities, Speech Is K.E.Y. empowers adolescents to make a difference in their community through the use of public speaking,” Kacy explained. A few years ago, Mike Ebersole had an idea. The 1974 graduate of Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) organized an all-class reunion for alumni of any class year. “Mike was a very social person,” recalled Peter Rios, a friend from high school. “He thought this would be a fun way for everyone to get together.”

His idea was well received. At the most recent all-class reunion, held in 2019, more than 150 people attended. Sadly, Ebersole passed away unex pectedly in June of 2020, but Rios wanted to keep the reunion going. This year’s all-class reunion will be held on Sunday, April 24, beginning at 2 p.m. at the Elizabethtown American Legion, 240 N. Hanover St. See Friends pg 10

On the second Friday of every month, downtown Elizabethtown is buzzing with activity. 2nd Fridays, held from 4 to 7 p.m., feature activities and events with a specific purpose, said Clint Gibble, one of the organizers of the initiative. “2nd Friday is important to E-town because it encourages a sense of community in our town,” he explained. “It invites people from outside our community to explore See Fridays pg 5

Elements of the event included a talent portion, for which Kacy sang “ Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again” from “The Phantom of the Opera,” as well as a lifestyle and fitness routine and an evening wear portion. As Kacy explained, the Miss Lancaster County Scholarship Organization is the local division of the Miss America Organization. “There’s often a misconception that the Miss America Organization is just a beauty pageant, but this myth couldn’t be farther from the truth,” she stated. “The organization strives to be for all women, placing inner beauty on a higher pedestal than the outer.” The competition helps women earn scholarships to further their education, she noted, and empowers women to make a difference in their community through their social impact initiatives. Kacy, who is the daughter of Brian and Sheila Hartmann, said she’s looking forward to the future. “My ambition is to go to college for a major in music,” she stated, noting that she loves to write, read, sew and participate in the performing arts in her free time. “Once I graduate from college, my career ambition is to be a music artist so I may share my thoughts, feelings and ideas with those who wish to listen.” Kacy learned about the competition in 2020 when she attended to support a friend who was taking part. She decided to compete herself, but the event was canceled in 2021. She finally got her chance to shine on stage after a two-year wait and said the experience was everything she hoped it would be. “I had heard about the Miss America pageant at a young age, and my younger self believed that I wasn’t good enough to compete in the pageant,” she stated. “I decided to prove my younger self wrong while being able to spread a platform that I care deeply about.”

For the members of the Marietta Legion Riders, it’s hard to tell what they love more: riding their bikes or giving back to their community. Lucky for them, they have equal opportunity to do both. Formed in the 1970s, the group has about 42 members, men and women who are either riders or passengers. Since its inception, the Marietta Riders group has had a mission of making an impact on the community. The group focuses on veterans’ organizations

and events, but not exclusively, said secretary Colie Schmitt, who rides as a passenger with her husband, Robert. “Ninety-five percent of what we do is vet-related, but we also help others when there are needs in the community,” she said. The group collects items for Toys for Tots and participates in the Marietta, Bainbridge and Maytown Memorial Day parades. It holds biannual chicken barbecues and spaghetti dinners, and it recently acquired a mailbox, which it fixed up and will install in the Legion parking lot as a receptacle where the community can deposit tattered flags for retirement. In May, the group will begin repairs on the Marietta Cemetery, working with a local Boy Scout troop. On the second Sunday of every month, from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m., the group holds an all-you-can-eat breakfast to benefit various organizations. On Sunday, March 13, proceeds will support Woodworking with Warriors, a Quarryville-based nonprofit that serves wounded veterans. “We do a lot of research into the groups we support, because want to make sure they are nonprofits and they are helping the local community,” explained president

This honor is the highest award given by the

Earning jackets were Calista Bryant, Matty ColvinKeefer, Mya Ellis, Austin Howes, Faith Musser, Vivienne Nolt, Jackson Umbrell, and Brianna Wolfe. To qualify, the members had to complete an application and write an essay answering the question “What does the FFA jacket mean to

me?” The blue corduroy jacket allows students to take part in numerous FFA programs. FFA is dedicated to making a positive difference in students’ lives by developing their potential for leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education. overall theme as well as a free scavenger hunt downtown designed to fit the theme. Everyone gets a free prize at the end of their scavenger hunt and is entered into a grand prize drawing.” Individual businesses are encouraged to offer specials or activities inside their stores to fit the theme, he said, such as a giveaway or game. 2nd Fridays also feature dessert trucks, special vendors and food specials at downtown restaurants. “Several times throughout the year, extra special events will be happening during the 2nd Friday evenings,” Tony stated. “In April, we’ll have Wonderlandza Egg-stravaganza, where we will be hosting Oliver the Rabbit and his buddy the Mad Hatter for photos with other fun activities - egg-themed, of course.” For this month’s 2nd Friday, on March 11, St. Patrick’s Day will be

When audiences come to a performance of “Songs for a New World,” they can expect something a little different than a traditional musical. “It’s like paying for one show, but you’re actually seeing 15,” said Wally Calderon, who will direct the show for Servant Stage. As

Calderon explained, “Songs For A New World” is a collection of songs that are intertwined. “It’s a very interesting piece of theater,” he stated. “People are used to going to see a show where they are following one story in the same setting, but in this show, these are 15 different stories. Every song is its own story, its own character.

WRESTLING The last two members of the wrestling team still standing, Nathan Thomas and Aiden Robinson, saw their season come to a close on February 25th and 26th at Spring Grove High School. The pair of juniors took part in the District 3-3A Championship and posted a combined 1-4 record. “Nathan and Aiden had outstanding seasons,” said head coach Mike Sernoffsky. “They were in the top 16 wrestlers in their weight classes in District III (63 schools),” with the skipper adding, “although they fell short of their goal of the state tournament, they realize they belong at the ‘big dance’.” Thomas accounted for the lone win but only after dropping his opening match in the 138-pound bracket. District 3 Championship. A total of seven Bears made the trip with an eighth, Alaina Telenko, opting to take part in her final NIT Field Hockey tournament in Richmond, VA instead. Telenko’s absence left E-town with three Lady Bear bowlers, none of whom managed to make it past the five qualifying games. Hannah Griffie was the top finisher, totaling 814 pins over her qualifying games, good enough for 26th. Gabriella Eberle tallied 773 pins over her five games, finishing 32nd while Kendra Griffie finished in 39th with her 679-pin count. A total of four boys made the trip as well with Ayden Pope posting the highest finish with his 940 qualifying score, placing him 21st in the 40-person field. Reigning L-L champ, Zach Wentzel, finished 26th with his 909 while Derek Deardorff was five spots and 52-pins behind his teammate. Daniel Eberle rounded out the quartet, finishing 36th with his 825.

Mount Joy 4-H Club Sets Meeting The Mount Joy 4-H Community Club will hold an organizational meeting on Monday, March 14, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Mount Joy Mennonite Church, 320 Musser Road, Mount Joy. Ebersole was well-known in the Elizabethtown community. He was the announcer for high school sports, as well as a DJ for WQIC in Lebanon and an announcer for Lebanon Valley College basketball and football. “He loved to personalize his announcing,” recalled Randy Garrett, who calls Ebersole his best friend. “He knew all the kids, and everyone knew Mike.” When Garrett and Ebersole graduated, they made a pact with three other guys to get together every year. Since then, they have had breakfast annually on the morning of Christmas Eve. “We never missed a year,” he stated. “The year Mike passed, we put a hat at his place. We said there would always be a seat at the table for all of us, even if it’s an empty seat.” Due to Ebersole’s involvement in the district, the Elizabethtown Area Education Foundation has started a fund in his honor. “We are raising money to upgrade the sound system at the football field and in the high school gym,” said Garrett, who is a member of the foundation board. “Our goal is to install the upgrades this summer to have it ready for the fall football season.” Rios encouraged everyone to come out to the all-class reunion, adding that he appreciates the support of the Elizabethtown American Legion in hosting the event. “Come and catch up with old friends,” he stated. “Several retired teachers will be attending. Hope Byers is mad at the groundhog, which predicted six more weeks of winter. “We are all waiting for spring,” said the director of Columbia Crossing River Trails Center. “We all have cabin fever.” But she has a solution: Spring Into the Park. The five-day event will be held at the center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, from Tuesday, March 22, through Saturday, March 26, and will feature activities for people of all ages. “We want to kick off spring and show you all the fun you can have here,” Byers said. Highlights on Tuesday will include bingo and trivia hosted by Columbia Senior Center, beginning at 9:30 a.m., as well as a free yoga class on the riverside deck with Vital Tree Yoga, beginning at 6 p.m. On Wednesday, March 23, a Bridge Walk & Talk will be held at 11 a.m., with a Susquehanna

National Heritage Area guide offering information about the bridges that have spanned the Susquehanna River. At 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Monica Spiese will host “Tell Your Story: An Oral History Workshop.” While the activities on Tuesday and Wednesday are geared more toward adults, Thursday, March 24, and Friday, March 25, will feature lots of kid-
