From Fairgoer to Fair Leader

Charley Lengel Kramer has a message to share: Agriculture is for everyone.

The 2024 graduate of Elizabethtown Area High School was named 2025 Pennsylvania Junior Fairperson of the Year on Jan. 24 at the state convention of the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs in Hershey. She was also elected to the PA Farm Show Junior Board and reelected to the Elizabethtown Junior Fair Board. In each position, she’s excited to share her love of agriculture and encourage more people to learn about the industry.

“I strongly believe that it doesn’t matter where you come from or what your background is - there is a place for everyone in agriculture,” Lengel Kramer said. “I didn’t grow up in ag, but now I raise goats, pigs and cattle on my own and am starting a breeding herd of cattle. … Everything I’ve accomplished is because I found my place in agriculture, thanks to my fair community, which welcomed me with open arms and helped me grow.”

Lengel Kramer, the daughter of JanMichael and Holly Kramer of Rheems, grew up attending the Elizabethtown Fair, enjoying the rides and food. After joining FFA in her sophomore year of high school, she began volunteering in the Farmer for a

A Musical Trip Back in Time

Step back into the past at the Manheim Antique Phonograph Show. The event will be held on Friday, Feb. 20, from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Feb. 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will take place at Trinity Lutheran Church of Colebrook, 58 Church Road, Manheim.

Hosted by Nick Sieber and Shawn Patrick, the show provides an opportunity for the pair to highlight their passion for preserving antique phonographs while educating and inspiring the public.

“We have attended other shows around the country, but many have discontinued or declined,” Patrick said. “We thought we needed to present an educational show to keep the hobby alive and thriving on the East Coast.”

This is the third year for the show.

Every week, Scott Feifer gets people to share their innermost thoughts. He’s not a clergyman or a therapist. He’s a writer, and he believes in the power of the pen.

Feifer, who taught language arts for almost 30 years at Hempfield School District, has been leading writing circles since his days as a teacher. He left his public school position in 2020 and has since

focused on the transformative power of writing.

Feifer leads writing circles at Manos House, a residential treatment program for young men in Columbia; Blueprints for Addiction Recovery; Domestic Violence Services; and the Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center, among other locations throughout Lancaster and neighboring counties.

“We run from our stories and the trauma and the hard things we’ve

“For several years, we have offered demonstrations for historical societies, retirement communities and other special events and have always received a great response from the crowd,” Sieber said. “Folks are always fascinated by the craftsmanship of the phonographs and love the music from the early 1900s that we share.”

They wanted to create an immersive experience for people to see and learn more about early phonographs, which is just what the Manheim show does, he said.

“Guests can socialize with other enthusiasts, learn about the history of recorded sound, enjoy 1920s music and even have an opportunity to buy a phonograph of their own,” Sieber noted.

vendors will be set up for early-bird sales. Patrick and Sieber will share the history and demonstrate the use of antique phonographs, and there will be a pizza dinner and a silent movie showing of Harold Lloyd’s “Get Out and Get Under” with live piano accompaniment by B. Steven T. On Saturday, people will be able to enjoy a presentation from guest speaker Wyatt Marcus. There will also be demonstrations of antique phonographs, a record and phonograph swap meet, food and live music.

Marcus, a lifelong phonography hobbyist, has focused his interest on the reproducers, or soundboxes, of antique phonographs.

“Wyatt is possibly the most recognizable name in our hobby for his contributions to phonograph history, repair and reproducer work,” Patrick said. “Wyatt worked years to learn, perfect and improve the reproducers or soundboxes for almost all brands of phonographs made. … Wyatt will be discussing the Edison Diamond disc machines that he perfected the sound reproduction to better-than-original standards.”

Also on Saturday, Sieber and Patrick will offer an introductory demonstration on antique phonographs, highlighting several different companies and types of records.

“We will be demonstrating the machines, reviewing basic care and operation and discussing the history of the phonograph,” Sieber said. “Guests will also enjoy seeing the process for making a live piano recording on an 1890s Edison

cylinder record. Making a cylinder recording is a fascinating and intricate process that is seldom seen.”

The show will also feature an auction, selling phonograph-related items, and food and drinks will be available for purchase. All proceeds will be used to support future shows.

There is no admission charge for either Friday’s or Saturday’s activities, and no tickets are required to attend.

“We would encourage anyone interested in the history of recorded sound, Thomas Edison phonographs or pre-1930s music to attend. This was one of the most fascinating times in American history,” Patrick said. “The live music will give you a taste of the music being recorded by these companies before 1930. The presentations, speakers and many knowledgeable collectors will be glad to share their knowledge in all aspects of phonograph history.”

Sieber noted that anyone with an interest in music or history will enjoy the show.

“This is a chance to experience the 1890s to 1920s firsthand, just as our grandparents or even great-grandparents did,” he said. “Guests can expect to hear many familiar tunes such as ‘The Charleston,’ ‘My Blue Heaven’ and ‘Yes Sir, That’s My Baby!’”

It’s Never Too Late to Get Moving

If the word “exercise” makes you think, “That’s not for me anymore,” Juniper Village at Mount Joy wants you to think again. Its new SilverSneakers fitness program is designed specifically for older adults, with gentle movements and certified instructors who understand aging bodies. The program is focused on what is possible, rather than what is not.

SilverSneakers is a nationwide fitness program, supported by research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health. The Juniper Village initiative is free for residents of the retirement community as well as any community members with eligible Medicare Advantage plans.

“The idea to bring SilverSneakers to Juniper Village at Mount Joy grew out of our commitment to offering fitness that is both meaningful and motivating for residents,” shared Rikki Goldenberg, national director of Catalyst for Juniper Communities.

“We were looking to expand the variety of our group classes while also introducing a program with a strong reputation for results. SilverSneakers is widely known and trusted by older adults, so it felt like a natural fit for our community.”

She noted that as the organization began conversations with the SilverSneakers team, it became apparent that the fitness program would provide an opportunity to deepen, not outsource, Juniper’s

wellness culture.

“Rather than simply hosting outside instructors, SilverSneakers offered to train and certify our own team members,” Goldenberg said. “That aligned perfectly with the Juniper approach. Our Juniper associates know our residents, their goals and their abilities; having them lead SilverSneakers classes allows us to deliver a nationally recognized program in a way that is personal, consistent and tailored to each individual.”

She emphasizes that Juniper Village also understands that fitness is not one-size-fits-all.

“Whether someone is wanting to build strength, improve flexibility or simply dance at a granddaughter’s wedding, we believe movement should support real-life goals and be offered at the right pace for each person,” she said.

SilverSneakers classes focus on improving strength, balance, flexibility and overall physical well-being, while also encouraging social connection and engagement. Gentle, chair-supported exercises enhance mobility and increase range of motion in all major joints, Goldenberg said.

“Exercise selection mimics activities of daily living, supporting participants in maintaining independence and quality of life,” she explained. “Cognitive health exercises and social interactions keep minds sharp while fostering meaningful connections.”

Elizabethtown

experienced,” he said. “But when we write it down, we realize that ultimately, there’s no running from our past.”

Ironically, the man who gets people to bare their souls on paper wasn’t always so open.

In 1998, he signed up for a summer writing workshop at Millersville University. As part of the class, students shared their writing with their peers.

“I didn’t want to reveal something so private,” Feifer recalled. “I decided I would go to the first class, but if I was uncomfortable or I didn’t like it, I would leave during the break.”

Not only did he stay for the class, but he also found a new outlet for his emotions.

“Something broke open for me in a way that I hadn’t expected,” he said of his writing. “I wanted my students to taste what I had experienced that summer.”

He began offering writing circles at Hempfield, focusing on ideals expressed in Natalie Goldberg’s “Writing Down the Bones.”

“It’s free writing, stream of consciousness, just get your thoughts down on paper,” he said. “I had kids writing about their dog dying. Kids wrote about their parents splitting up. They wrote about their dad in

Day tent, at the milkshake stand and with her friends and their livestock.

“The following year, I decided to become more involved by bringing goats to the fair,” she recalled. “By my senior year, I ran for Elizabethtown Fair queen and exhibited goats, pigs and cattle. From that point on, my involvement continued to grow, and the fair quickly became a second family to me.”

Over the years, she’s served as fair queen and as Junior Fair Board president.

“I love the culture of the Elizabethtown Fair,” she said. “People travel from all over to come back and help at their hometown fair. The support shown to youth, especially during the livestock sale, is incredible. Everyone wants each other to succeed and works together to make each year better than the last.”

The year leading up to Lengel Kramer becoming Junior Fairperson of the Year was an especially productive one.

“I began 2025 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show, where I served on the PA Farm Show Junior Committee,” she shared. “In that role,

prison and wondering what he was doing while they were in class.”

In 2002, Feifer took a sabbatical and began offering his writing circles at various locations around the county, including domestic violence organizations and detention centers.

“Honestly, when I started going to the Youth Intervention Center, I was shocked by how respectful most of the kids in the unit were,” he said. “They were eager to be heard.”

This is Feifer’s 22nd year volunteering at Manos House, where he leads writing circles with young men, facilitates joint groups with women from a local recovery house and incorporates writing into group counseling sessions.

As a former teacher, he said he most enjoys that this writing is not graded or required to fit any standards.

“There’s no rubric, no box they have to fit into,” he shared. “This writing lets people know they have a voice and a story, and they can use their voice to tell their story. These writing circles are for people who are struggling just to survive, when we all deserve to thrive.”

Feifer’s sessions typically begin with a prompt, which

could be a poem or a writing passage, but participants may write about anything they like. He also shares his own story with his writing circle, encouraging the writer to embrace the idea of putting their thoughts onto paper.

“I explain that writing slows us down and gives us time to reflect and respond and not just act on impulse or just react,” he said.

Ultimately, he’s not concerned with the final product; instead, he’s focused on the process.

“It’s not about the quality of the writing,” he said. “It’s about the quality of the people who sit and do the writing. It’s about what comes out of them. You can hear when somebody’s heart is in their writing.”

His goal is “writing toward freedom, recovery, healing and hope.”

Participants are invited to share their writing out loud during the circles if they’d like to, and Feifer collects the writing and responds to each submission.

“I believe in writing back to them on the back of their paper, by hand,” he said. “I read everything they submit, even if it’s not shared in the circle.”

Feifer, who grew up in

Lancaster and graduated from McCaskey High School and Franklin & Marshall College, earned his teaching certificate from Millersville University. He’s been honored with local accolades as a volunteer, including receiving the Jefferson Award and a Teacher Impact Award.

He doesn’t do it for the honors, he said. Instead, he’s motivated and inspired by the change he sees in the people who join his writing circles.

“Someone will tell me, ‘This was not what I expected, but it was what I needed,’” he said. “Writing like this allows you take off the suit of armor we all wear, let some light in and really be yourself, who you truly are.”

He encourages participants like the young men at Manos House to keep their writings to share with their parole officers as evidence of their growth in the program.

“I tell people, ‘When you take what I’m doing seriously, you’re taking yourself seriously,’” he said. “I hope that through my writing circles, I’m giving people a tool of greater personal awareness and that is giving them power.”

I raised and exhibited livestock, traveled to different counties for committee meetings and toured agricultural operations. I also met with the Pennsylvania Fruit Commodities Council as part of my selected commodity work for the Farm Show.”

In the summer of 2025, she helped to establish the Elizabethtown Junior Fair Board, serving as the group’s president.

“I also assisted in launching an alpaca show at the Elizabethtown Fair. Throughout the season, I visited numerous fairs and volunteered or exhibited livestock at the Lebanon, Elizabethtown, Manheim and Ephrata fairs,” she said. “After fair season ended, my focus shifted back to preparing for the 2026 Pennsylvania Farm Show, continuing my involvement year-round.”

Winning Pennsylvania Junior Fairperson of the Year recognition was a surprise and an honor, she said. She was especially proud to be considered for the accolade among other regional winners who had been involved with their fairs for years and had accumulated numerous accomplishments through 4-H and FFA.

Lengel Kramer just completed her second year on the junior committee for the Pennsylvania Farm Show, a role she earned through an application process and two rounds of interviews. Her responsibilities include meeting monthly throughout the state to tour agricultural operations, helping to plan and run the Junior Committee Auction and coordinating the Lancaster Farming Stage, which hosts more than 200 presentations during the Farm Show.

She helped to start the Elizabethtown Junior Fair Board because she wanted other kids to experience the fair as she had.

“I believe it’s important for youth to be involved in the fair at a deeper level,” she remarked. “We are the next generation, and learning about all aspects of fair operations, not just showing animals, helps prepare us to take on leadership roles in the future.”

As a junior fair board member, she helps with fair setup and teardown, assists with children’s activities, manages social media, helps to operate the fair store and supports various committees throughout the week.

Lengel Kramer currently attends Delaware Valley University, where she’s majoring in agribusiness. She plans to attend law school in the future.

For now, she’s embracing her role as an ambassador for agriculture.

“My goals are to connect with the public, spread awareness about agriculture and build strong networks within the industry,” she said.

She hopes also to promote the importance of events like the Elizabethtown Fair.

“Fairs help educate the public about agriculture and its impact. Many people don’t realize where their food comes from or the work that goes into producing it,” she said. “Fairs allow us to correct misconceptions and show that agriculture touches everyone. They also provide opportunities for all community members, whether they come for rides, food, art exhibits, baking or livestock, to feel connected.”

The 2026 Elizabethtown Fair will be held from Monday, Aug. 24, through Saturday, Aug. 29. For more information, visit https:// etownfair.com.
