Food, music and community Welcome to the Battle aims to disarm the enemy at the library BY JEFF FALK
You’re invited to a fight, a confrontation between good and evil, a struggle for lives. In the war against human trafficking, the North Star Initiative (NSI) event Welcome to the Battle is a preemptive strike. It is an attempt to deal the enemy a blow before he or she can mount an offensive. “The battle is to end human

An alliance of artists BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Lancaster County has a longstanding and deep connection to visual art and creatives in the community. Lancaster city’s historic downtown area is rife with art galleries and painters’ exhibitions, the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design and distinguished museums such as Lancaster Museum of Art and the Demuth Museum. Lancaster-born artists such as Charles Demuth, whose life and work are immortalized in the Demuth Museum, have become nationally renowned for their artistic
careers. In modern times, new generations of budding artists such as JJ Roach continue Lancaster’s artistic legacy by achieving recognition across Pennsylvania and beyond. The Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), a nonprofit organization headquartered in Strasburg, is a countywide network of paintbrushes and sketchbooks. LCAA’s members hail from ever y part of the county, as well as areas as far as Chester County, Philadelphia and Maryland. here’s a lot more to the library than books, and that will be evident on Friday, Feb. 7, when the Elizabethtown Public Library hosts A Taste of Western Lancaster County. The event will be held from 4:30 to 9 p.m. at the library, 10 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. “Attendees will experience a unique night out at the library,” said Brandon Allen, librar y co-chair of the planning committee. “Forget about being quiet and enjoy samples of food and drinks on all three floors of the library while listening to live music, meeting up with friends and making some new ones.” The event is a collaboration between the librar y and the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown. The Rotary co-chair is Kevin Gardner. Allen explained how A Taste of Western Lancaster County works. “ W hen people enter, they will be given a bag with a program, voting slips and some extra goodies,” he said. “A s they sample food and beverages throughout the building, they are encouraged to vote for their favorites in the categories of beverage, appetizer, entree, dessert and best of show. The winners will be announced soon after and receive a plaque.” Tables are set up throughout the library, highlighting a variety of local establishments. “ We fe a t u re re s t a u ra n t s , breweries, wineries, distilleries and other food vendors in the area for people to sample,” Allen shared. “ This way they can reach a wider clientele and
trafficking in our community,” said Melinda Clark, NSI’s chief executive officer. “Our community doesn’t want trafficking to happen here, and it does. The battle line is long, and everyone has a chance to step up and be a part of the battle. Part of the battle tactics is to know what it looks like and have everyone know what to do when they see it.” Welcome to the Battle is NSI’s
