JUNIPER VILLAGE AT MOUNT JOY
On New Year’s Day, the streets of Lancaster County will be filled with motorcyclists, all riding to benefit veterans. The 12th annual charity ride will kick off at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 1, 2021, at the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy. Registration for the event will open at 10 a.m. Proceeds from the event benefit veterans who use services at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. “Last year, we raised $33,000,” said Tyler Stumpf, ride organizer. “Over the years, we have raised
$193,000.” Money is raised through the entry fee for the ride as well as sales of T-shirts and patches. Typically, the event would also include a meal after the ride and a silent auction, but that has changed this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. Instead, organizers are looking for donations of items for veterans or financial contributions. “The event will be held completely outside this year,” Stumpf noted. “We’ll have a trailer in the parking lot to collect things for veterans like toiletries, stamps and prepaid phone cards.” The 25-mile ride follows a route along the Susquehanna

For more than 20 years, Cross Roads Church, 800 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, has been hosting a free Christmas dinner, and this year will be no exception. The meal will be held on Friday, Dec. 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. “This year, we will do things See Dinner pg 7 a little differently,” said Clare Funck, one of the coordinators of the meal. Instead of a sit-down meal, the dinner will only be available to go. “(People) can do pickup, and we’ll deliver the meal right to their car.” The meal will include a wide variety of traditional Christmas foods, she noted, adding, “There will be turkey, stuffing, gravy, gourmet scalloped potatoes and plenty of desserts.” Last year, the church hosted about 400 people for the Clare Funck (left) and Denise Steck invite people to a dinner, Funck said. This year, free dinner on Christmas Day at Cross Roads Church organizers are asking people in Mount Joy.

As vehicles exit the parking lot, a station will be available where individuals may request prayer, obtain information about Wayside Presbyterian Church, or leave an offering to continue the church’s ministry. Ever since houses of worship began to reopen in accordance with COVID guidelines, Wayside has offered attendees the choice of participating in limited in-person gatherings following all COVID safety protocols or connecting online through the church website. Nine months have elapsed since the first shutdown order was announced. For Christians who have not felt safe to attend church in person during those months, it has been a long time since they have participated in Holy Communion. To remedy that and with Christmas approaching, the leaders of Wayside Presbyterian Church, 600 Stony Battery Road, Landisville, came up with the idea of serving the Eucharist drive-through-style. “At this difficult time, our outreach and worship and music teams felt this might be another way to offer support to those missing the sacrament and offer this vehicle to receive not only for our own congregation, but as a gift to the community, for

John and Mable Hershey celebrated their 60th anniversary on Oct. 23 with their family. They are longtime residents of the home John grew up in outside of Maytown. They were married at Mount Joy Mennonite Church by the Rev. Henry Frank on Oct. 23, 1960. They are the parents of Brent Hershey, husband of Lisa, Mount Joy; Brenda Moran, wife of Patrick, Mount Joy; and Beth Baker, wife of Jerry, Mount Joy. They are the grandparents of nine grandchildren: Michael Moran, husband of Maci; Austin Moran, husband of
Addie; Patrick Moran, husband of Brooke; Colleen, Nicholas, and Faith Hershey; and Derrick, Cole, and Brett Baker. They also have seven great-grandchildren. Hospitality has always been a gift of John and Mable, and they have opened their home to host many socials. They have hosted exchange
students from Denmark, Germany, and Africa, becoming parents to them during their stay. John and Mable thank God for a solid family heritage and strong faith, which they say have contributed to their 60 years of marriage. John and Mable have retired from farming at their Marietta farm. Contactless Amish Farmland Tour Offered The Amish Experience, a guided bus tour company in Lancaster County founded in 1959, has announced that in order to serve those visitors who are concerned about getting on a bus with strangers, it has developed a completely contactless option for the traditional 90-minute guided Amish farmland tour. A small FM radio transmitter was installed in the Amish
Experience bus, so that everything the guide says into his or her hands-free microphone in the bus is broadcast over a vacant frequency on the FM dial, thus allowing customer to drive in the safety and comfort of their own vehicles, following the bus down the scenic back roads, with the live, in-the-moment narration of the guide coming through their car’s speakers.
