New Year’s Day Ride Will Benefit Veterans BY CATHY MOLITORIS
n New Year’s Day, the streets of Lancaster County will be filled with motorcyclists, all riding to benefit veterans. The 12th annual charity ride will kick off at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 1, 2021, at the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy. Registration for the event will open at 10 a.m. Proceeds from the event benefit veterans who use services at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. “Last year, we raised $33,000,” said Tyler Stumpf, ride organizer. “Over the years, we have raised $193,000.” Money is raised through the entry fee for the ride as well as sales of T-shirts and patches. Typically, the event would also include a meal after the ride and a silent auction, but that has changed this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. Instead, organizers are looking for donations of items for veterans or financial contributions. “The event will be held completely

outside this year,” Stumpf noted. “We’ll have a trailer in the parking lot to collect things for veterans like toiletries, stamps and pre-paid phone cards.” The 25-mile ride follows a route along the Susquehanna River and concludes at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St. Proceeds from the ride are wholly used for veteran services, with no money going to administrative costs or overhead, said Nicole Tipping, who will be participating in the event. “Since donations will not be as big this year without the auction, we are really encouraging people to bring items for the vets or to make a financial donation,” she stated. Local businesses are also encouraged to donate to the event. The ride, which is open to the public, is not just for motorcyclists. Drivers of other vehicles are invited, Stumpf said, adding, “It’s for anyone who would like to honor veterans.” It was important to organizers that the ride happened this year,

For more than 20 years, Cross Roads Church, 800 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, has been hosting a free Christmas dinner, and this year will be no exception. The meal will be held on Friday, Dec. 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. “This year, we will do things a little differently,” said Clare Funck, one of the coordinators of the meal. “We are giving people options. n roads throughout central Pennsylvania, bicycle riders are changing lives one ride at a time. That’s the philosophy behind Lifecycles, a Wrightsville-based organization that works to build young men and women of character. “We combine mentoring and a spiritual aspect with a vehicle that brings people together, which is longdistance cycling,” said Lee DeRemer, Boys and girls ages 12 to 18 are invited to join Lifecycles, an organization that combines faith-based mentoring with long-distance cycling.

The Rotary Club of Mount Joy presented a check for $5,320 to Rainbow’s End Youth Center (REYS) on Oct. 27. The check went toward the BackPacks 2 School Program, which assists in providing school supplies to Donegal School District students in need. This year, REYS purchased Kits for Kidz backpacks for each student. These kits were developed and refined to contain 30 essential, age-appropriate items that will last the entire school year. The program benefited a total of more than 400 students from kindergarten through 12th grade, reported Cristina Paden,

Lancaster Lawyer Receives PBA’s Highest Honor has served as board chair of the American Red Cross of the Susquehanna Valley, the Lancaster County Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and Lancaster Catholic High School. He also has served as a member of the Northeast Service Area Resource Council of the American Red Cross and, in that position, he was responsible for coordinating and providing governance as well
as planning counsel and advice to Red Cross chapters in the nine states of the northeast United States and in the Caribbean. The award was presented on Nov. 20 during a meeting of the PBA House of Delegates, the policymaking body of the association. Creme is a 1977 graduate of Dickinson College and a 1980 graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center.

Lawyer Matthew J. Creme Jr., who practices in the Lancaster office of Nikolaus and Hohenadel, has been awarded the Pennsylvania Bar Medal, the highest honor conferred by the Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA). The Pennsylvania Bar Medal is presented to a PBA member whose efforts have resulted in significant improvement in the administration of justice or the legal profession or who has performed outstanding service to the association, profession or community. PBA president David E. Schwager noted that Creme, who served as the PBA’s 2011-12 president, has provided pro bono legal support to the association over a number of years. Most recently, Creme led the team that oversaw the successful legal process authorizing the dissolution of the separate nonprofit status for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute (PBI), bringing PBI back into the PBA as its education department. PBI provides continuing legal education (CLE) to lawyers and judges across the commonwealth. Schwager said Creme was willing to, on a pro bono basis, go above and beyond to tackle PBA legal matters, despite the time commitment required. For example, Schwager said Creme guided the PBA’s shift from a defined employee pension plan to a market-competitive 401(k) plan. As a long-term member and also chair of the PBA Pension Committee, Schwager said Creme saw the unsustainable climb in expenses for the PBA to remain within its former pension plan. The 401(k) plan with some PBA matching of employee contributions carries less cost and less risk for the PBA and provides employees with greater flexibility in their investment options. In addition to his legal support provided to the PBA, Creme is active in nonprofit community organizations. He

The board of directors of the Central Penn Business Group on Health (CPBGH) has announced that Leslie Wireback joined the organization as the new executive director in early November. Wireback replaced Diane N. Hess, who is retiring at the end of the year. Wireback is an experienced human resources professional who has partnered with executive leadership to create and enhance cultures that are designed to advance business and engage
employees. She creates connections with individuals, and these relationships enable her to get to the core of issues or concerns. After over 20 years working in human resources, she is well versed in the challenges of providing quality health care for employees while also managing the expenses for the business. She is actively engaged as a volunteer with the Lancaster Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), where she currently serves as vice president. Wellness Journal Available To Seniors Together, Seniors BlueBook and Fizika Group recently announced the publication of the Premier Edition of the Fizikaflex Wellness Journal, titled “Feel the Freedom: A Guide to Putting Health Into Your Own Hands.” The publication is a result of a creative partnership between the two organizations and HDC MidAtlantic, which is distributing “Feel the Freedom” to residents in several
of its local housing communities. Both Seniors BlueBook, an educational resource for seniors, caregivers, adult children and senior professionals in central Pennsylvania, and Fizika Group, a Lancaster-based health and wellness technology company that develops digital health solutions and provides professional development to help at-risk communities thrive, share the goal
of helping central Pennsylvania seniors to successfully age in place and stay healthy. HDC MidAtlantic, a nonprofit developer and manager of affordable housing in central Pennsylvania, partnered with Fizika in July to pilot the app with two dozen seniors residents living at HDC’s Duke Manor Apartments and King Theatre Apartments in Lancaster city. BlueBook and Fizika Group align closely with HDC’s holistic approach to affordable housing, which includes a strong focus on supporting health and wellness for residents. The Wellness Journal is an extension of Fizikaflex, Fizika’s smart wellness app that helps seniors living in affordable housing communities to improve their health by monitoring daily activities like eating, sleeping and exercising. Users can document their progress in an online journal and share results with their peers. The idea for a print journal emerged from working with HDC staff and residents on the pilot program as a solution for residents who lack technology to fully utilize the app. In response to resident needs, Seniors BlueBook and Fizika also opted to make the journal fully bilingual, and each page features an outlined box with Spanish translation for all activities. This year, organizers are asking people to preregister on the Cross Roads website at https://crossroadsbic.com/ or call the church at 717-6531616 if possible. “You don’t have to do that, but it makes it easier for us, especially with the curbside pickup,� she explained. “For anyone eating inside, we will be following the same guidelines that restaurants are following, with mask wearing and social distancing.� Funck said the meal is important because it brings
the community together, and it provides a place for people to spend the holiday who may otherwise be alone, which she knows something about. “When I moved out here from New York years ago, I didn’t know anyone,� she recalled. “I didn’t have anywhere to go for Christmas, and I wanted to do something special.� Although there is no charge for the meal, guests may bring a canned good for the Mount Joy Food Bank if they would like to contribute something. Funck said the meal draws new and repeat diners year after year, some of whom have attended for more than 20 years. “This meal is all about the meaning of Christmas,� she remarked. “It’s about coming together, enjoying fellowship with other people and serving out a meal.�

Hersheys Celebrate 60th Anniversary John and Mable Hershey celebrated their 60th anniversary on Oct. 23 with their family. They are longtime residents of the home John grew up in outside of Maytown. They were married at Mount Joy Mennonite Church by the Rev. Henry Frank on Oct. 23, 1960. They are the parents of Brent Hershey, husband of Lisa, Mount Joy; Brenda Moran, wife of Patrick, Mount Joy; and Beth Baker, wife of Jerry, Mount Joy. They are the grandparents of nine grandchildren: Michael Moran, husband of Maci; Austin Moran, husband of Addie; Patrick Moran, husband of Brooke; Colleen, Nicholas, and Faith Hershey; and Derrick, Cole, and Brett Baker. the physical challenge of riding, as well as the opportunity for spiritual growth and social support, he said. “We meet the teens where they are,” he explained. “We don’t focus on troubles at home or school. There are other people in their lives for that. We want to build a positive and encouraging environment for them.” The organization has grown over the years primarily by word of mouth, DeRemer said, and the opportunities for riders have grown as well. This past summer, a group of nine boys and four leaders had planned to participate in a 3,800-mile ride from Oregon to Maine. Although the experience was postponed due to the pandemic, it has been rescheduled for the summer of 2021. DeRemer emphasized that Lifecycles is open to anyone who is interested. “Everything is provided for the teens—bikes, helmets, shirts, water bottles,” he said. “The teens pay nothing. He sees the group as a way to reach teens through a unique avenue. “Teens get talked at an awful lot, so we try to do something different,” he noted. “We listen a lot. We’ll have a short talk while we’re stretching and getting ready to ride, and we’ll hit them with some good ideas to think about. Those ideas will bounce around in their heads while they are riding for the next hour and a half.” Teenagers tend to open up during the silence and great things can start happening, he said. “The teens start talking so now you know what’s on their mind rather than sharing what you think matters to them,” he explained. “You’ll find teens have a lot to share.” DeRemer and his wife, Marcie, incorporated Lifecycles in 2014. The program is open to youths ages 12 to 18, and graduates are encouraged to stay on as mentors. Participants in the faithbased program benefit from

Scouts Complete Cycling Merit Badge Four members of Boy Scout Troop 53 recently completed the Cycling Merit Badge. These Scouts are James Peterson, Delton Brixius, Todjr Dohl, and Caiden Karpel. Along with learning bicycle maintenance and safety skills, the Scouts were required to go on seven progressively longer rides culminating in a 50-mile bike ride. For their final trip, the boys rode the entire Northwest Lancaster County River Trail,
then crossed the Wrightsville Bridge into York County and linked with the Mason-Dixon Trail north to a point directly across from Riverfront Park. Railroad Museum Plans Virtual Programs The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg has slated several upcoming virtual programs. Registration is through Eventbrite, and all virtual programs are held via Zoom. A Pioneer Steam Heritage Virtual Tour will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 16, from 7 to 8 p.m. Tickets are available by donation. The event will be an indepth tour of two of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s iconic locomotives representing 19th century steam the John Bull and the Tahoe as well as two of the oldest
preserved passenger coaches the Camden & Amboy No. 3 and the Cumberland Valley combination car. The Manufacturers’ Association was awarded a $147,000 training grant by the Federal Susan Harwood Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The funds will be used to support warehouse safety in central and southcentral Pennsylvania. The training grant, focusing on “Warehouse Hazards,” will help workers and employers recognize serious workplace hazards, including implementing injury prevention measures and understanding rights and responsibilities under the Occupational Safety and Health Act. The grant audience will focus on employees in warehouse facilities and manufacturers, especially small businesses. Training will include ergonomics, forklift safety, and slips, trips, and falls. Michael Hora, chemical production line lead, has been named VisionCorps Employee of the Year as part of the 2020 Peter J. Salmon Employee of the Year for the National Industries for the Blind (NIB). Each year, NIB recognizes an employee who is blind in each agency within its nationwide network of associated nonprofit agencies. The Salmon award honors the memory of Dr. Peter J. Salmon, who was instrumental in the passage of the Wagner-O’Day Act in 1938 and the formation of NIB. Beth Tice, VisionCorps vice president/COO, noted that Hora is willing to help wherever needed, is involved in safety and quality programs, and has cross-trained so he can perform various jobs. Tice said Hora, who began working at VisionCorps in 2013, was recently promoted

Hora became legally blind from glaucoma, an eye disease that affects his depth perception and ability to see fine detail. He credits VisionCorps’ rehabilitation services with helping him learn to adapt to his vision loss and find employment again, this time working on a production line at VisionCorps. The awards were announced at the recent NIB/NAEPB virtual annual conference. Hora was presented with the award at the VisionCorps office. Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) announced its “Cherish Love Honor: The Campaign for Lancaster Catholic High School” rollout. The capital campaign in support of a $12.7 million initiative will transform the current building to enhance the student experience and learning environment by creating attractive spaces for learning. Elements of Phase 1 include an auditorium and Catholic Student Life Center, with a Student Commons and dining hall, as well as a STEM Innovation Center. Tim Hamer, school president, announced that through behind-the-scenes efforts that began in 2019, the campaign currently has $8.75 million or 69% of its total goal in commitments. With this news, LCHS will begin Phase 1A of its campus master plan this summer, when construction of the new STEM Innovation Center begins. LCHS will repurpose the second floor

RICK FAUST Rick Faust ,43, of Mount Joy passed unexpectedly on November 10th,2020. Rick was a real character who loved to make people laugh. Even during Covid he made people smile by wearing an underwear mask in public. Rick was all about a good time and as he put it “Had champagne tastes on a beer budget”. His infectious humor and smile will be missed. Rick had many interests. One thing about Rick, he was never half way into a hobby. Early on in life he lifted weights and enjoyed listening to 2Pac especially Makaveli. He regularly went to the beach and loved fishing. He surely helped keep the tackle shop in business. Later on, he enjoyed history and was proud to be a World War II Re-enactor. He also enjoyed fixing cars. He was a skilled Painter but previously enjoyed driving sports cars for the Manheim Auto Auction. The closest he got to his own sports car was an old Scirocco that he loved hitting the pedal to the metal. He was just an amazing person all around to friends and family. He is survived by his parents Pat Faust & Jackie Burham plus 4 children he adored: Patrick, Hayden, Gavin & Tyler. In addition, Grandma Lee Gaborek and multiple Aunts, Uncles, Cousins plus extended family. Rick lives forever in our memories till we meet again.
