“We want to offer opportunities to share our cultural heritage with the community,” said Elise Bullington, event chairperson for Lancaster Liederkranz’s Christkindlmarkt. “We do that through our fests. A big thing in Germany are these Christmas markets. They are an opportunity to bring people together, for local
artisans to showcase their talents and for wonderful family fun.” Christkindlmarkt will be held on the Liederkranz grounds, 722 S. Chiques Road, Manheim, on Sunday, Dec. 12, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. “We will have more than 30 different vendors selling anything from candies to traditional German nutcrackers, ornaments, Moravian See German pg 2

A Saving Grace For Young Mothers When Candace Abel became involved with the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) program in Lancaster, she noticed something. There were plenty of programs in place to help the children she was advocating for, but it was a different story for the young mothers. “The mother of my very first CASA child appointment was developmentally disabled and only 19 years old,” Abel recalled. “She was really in need of strong and loving guidance, but she did not fit into any of the local programs for single moms. … I kept thinking what she needed was a reliable ally who could offer both advice and comfort to make the difference in her future life.” From that experience, Second Grace was born. The two-year program for single mothers below the age of 25 will match “Graces” - the
mothers - with “Sages” - trained mentors who will advocate on the mother’s behalf. The Sage might do anything from offering advice to driving the Grace to court or child care classes, helping with budgeting or assisting with finding housing.
“She was really in need of strong and loving guidance, but she did not fit into any of the local programs for single moms. …” Each Grace will have her own Sage, but the Graces will move through the program in groups of four who will attend monthly Grace Gatherings. “This will give our Grace clients the opportunity to build community with someone who can understand their challenges,” Abel
explained. “Additionally, they will need a better peer support system to get and stay healthy.” During the second year of Second Grace, the Graces will move into the work phase of the program. “Our vision includes longterm stability for our Grace, and an understanding of the value of steady employment is an important piece of this stability,” Abel stated. The goal is to employ the Graces either at Girl Crush, a bath and body products company Abel started in 2017, or other local businesses. Abel founded Girl Crush after retiring from Brittany’s Hope, the special needs adoption advocacy program she created after losing her first adopted child in a car accident. She’s the mother of 17 children, 13 of whom are girls. “Every time I would adopt another daughter, people would say to me, ‘You must have a girl crush,’” she said.
After holding a livestreamed show with minimal attendance due to COVID-19 restrictions in 2020, Ursula Wolfer, director of the Red Rose Figure Skating Club’s upcoming revue, is excited to be staging an in-person show that will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Red Rose Figure Skating Club.

Food is a highlight of the festival, with options offered both outside and indoors. “Inside, we’ll have sit-down dining,” Bullington explained. “It’s more formal and will feature our German platters.” Inside dining choices include a half-chicken, pork schnitzel, Schweinshaxe (German pork knuckle), and goulasch. All are served over spaetzle and include a choice of red cabbage or Gurkensalat (cucumber salad) plus apple strudel. “Outside, we’ll have three kinds of soup - ham and bean, potato, and kielbasa and sauerkraut - as well as jumbo hot dogs, kielbasa, bratwurst sandwiches, and currywurst boats,” she said. Homemade pierogies are a popular food choice, she noted, adding that flavors vary each year, but will include potato and cheese, potato and bratwurst, potato and roast garlic, pork and sauerkraut, and apple cinnamon. New flavors this year will be pumpkin pie and Hungarian hot wax, a type of hot pepper. “All the pierogies are made in-house with love by our ‘pierogie posse,’” Bullington explained, noting that members meet weekly for several weeks leading up to the event to prepare the pierogies. “And of course, we’ll have beer and glühwein, which is a German spiced mulled wine, along with hot chocolate for the kids.” Santa will be on-site for pictures, and a variety of children’s activities will be featured inside downstairs. “We’ll have a kids’ craft area set up, where they can make birdseed ornaments and put them on our Christmas tree outside,” Bullington remarked. “We’ll also have a face painter there. It’s a good opportunity to come inside and get out of the cold.” Admission to the Christkindlmarkt is free. On-site parking will be available at the event for a fee, and off-site parking will also be offered, with a shuttle bus to the site. “This is a fun day for everyone,” Bullington stated. “A lot of our fests are more adult-oriented, but this is something to get kids involved and bring the whole family to. “It’s called ‘Magical Memories,’ and it’s a look back and a re-creation of all our greatest hits over the past 20 years,” said Wolfer. “Our principal skaters will do songs that were featured numbers in past shows.” Principal skaters for 2021 are Amelia Atkinson, Lily Babione, Evan Bertz, and Lauren King, along with area high school seniors Cassie Peck, Isabella Kettles, and Navya Reddy. “Magical Memories” will be presented on Sunday, Dec. 12, at 1 and 5 p.m. at the Lancaster Ice Rink, 371 Carerra Drive, Lancaster. The show will feature more than 30 skaters ranging from beginners to adults. Among the show numbers will be features from past shows including “Arabian Nights” from the “Princess Classics” show, “Hoedown Throwdown” from “Toy Story,” “Neverland” from “Finding Neverland,” “Defying Gravity” from “Oz on Ice,” “What Time is it?” from the “High School Musical” show, “Come Alive” from “Mirror Mirror,” “Circle of Life” from “Festival of Life,” and “Ugg-A-Wugg” from “Peter Pan.” According to Wolfer, audience members should expect to see a presentation that will draw on skaters’ skills and acting ability. “We will have some high-flying double jumps, including double axles,” she reported. “(Skaters) showcase all kinds of spins that require extreme flexibility.” She added that fancy footwork will include twists and turns that represent the highest level of U.S. figure skating rankings. “(Skaters) work hard at emotionally bringing the characters to life,” Wolfer stated, adding that theatrical movements that require unison and teamwork among skaters will be featured as well. The final performance will bring back costumes from featured skating solos throughout the years. Wolfer has confidence in the Red Rose coaching staff that will be helping prepare the skaters for the show. “Our
coaching staff is very experienced,” she said, pointing out that many of the coaches have taken part in past shows and performed in some of the numbers that will be included this year. Wolfer skated with Disney on Ice for several years, and she has brought her professional experience to the choreography of the show. Readers who wish to purchase tickets may email Lynne@rrfsc.org. by another organization, Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, the idea for Second Grace is a unique one and required creation from the ground up. “The cream of the crop came forward,” she said, of Deborah Wilson Gadsden, a child welfare expert who is writing the curriculum for the Sages, and Karen Jaskot, a family and addiction therapist who has written the curriculum for the Graces. With the foundation for Second Grace set and a strong executive committee and board of directors in place,
the program is ready to begin Sage mentor training. “Sages need the fortitude to go the road for two years with these women and the extraordinary, compassionate patience to stand firm and help when these women meet obstacles,” Abel said. “I am sure that when we make a good match, it will be life changing.” An information session for potential Sages is set for Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Event Barn at 1610 Landis Road, Mount Joy. Additionally, Weis Markets became the first sponsor of the new Live Fierce Capital Region community impact campaign. This yearlong campaign helped the American Heart Association address community health priorities, including providing CPR in Schools training kits to several school districts throughout central Pennsylvania, supplying a local Federally Qualified Health Center with blood pressure self-monitoring tools to help patients most at risk of uncontrolled high blood pressure to manage their blood pressure at home. The campaign also equipped Harrisburg School District with new filtered water bottle filling stations, which will provide students with access to clean drinking water in an effort to encourage them to hydrate with water instead of sodas and other sugary drinks. Local Weis Markets employees who have served as volunteer leaders for the American Heart Association over the past year include Ron Bonacci, vice president of advertising and marketing, southcentral Pennsylvania board of directors member and 2021 Capital Region Heart Ball chair; Jaime Hynoski, community relations and event management specialist, 2021 Capital Region Heart Walk co-chair; Emily Bumgarner, registered dietician, 2021 Capital Region Heart Walk co-chair; Wendy Oliver, regional vice president of operations, 2022 Capital Region Go Red for Women cochair; and Rick Seipp, vice president of pharmacy, 2022 Capital Region Go Red for Women co-chair. Local Child Brings Special Needs Charities Together
Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC) held its annual “Mane” Event Gala on Oct. 23 at Bent Creek Country Club. The event, which attracted 100 guests, featured a message from Deanna and Matt Adair, whose 7-year-old daughter, Zoey, has a rare genetic condition called Rett syndrome. The disorder, caused by a single gene mutation, has taken away Zoey’s ability to walk, speak, or have
full functionality of her hands. During her address, Deanna said therapeutic riding at GMTRC has improved Zoey’s core strength, balance, and use of her hands. Zoey has created close bonds with her horse, Little Lacey; her instructors; and the volunteers at the barn. Deanna is a physical therapist and learned about GMTRC and its services through her co-workers at the
Schell Serves At Boston Marathon Erika Schell of Mount Joy is one of six students at Lebanon Valley College (LVC), Annville, who served as a medical volunteer at the Boston Marathon in October. Schell, a graduate of Donegal High School, is pursuing a Master of Athletic Training degree at
LVC. The students continued a longtime LVC connection that traces back to 2011 when their professor, Dr. Joe Murphy, director and associate professor of athletic training, began volunteering as a medical adviser for the historic race.

Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development. Schreiber is responsible for connecting many of its clients to additional resources for continued development. Since joining the Schreiber team five years ago, Deanna has been able to recommend wrap-around services, like GMTRC, to her clients. Schreiber provides outpatient and in-home pediatric therapy for people from birth to age 21, serving more than 4,000 children a year. Therapy services include occupational, physical, speech-language therapy, and behavioral health services.
Zoey has benefited from Schreiber’s resources as well. She attended Schreiber’s S.T.A.R.S. preschool and Circle of Friends Academy. Schreiber also offers recreation programs, summer camps, and specialized classes for parents. GMTRC and the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development are available to help new families in need and share resources for other organizations. The United Way of Lancaster County also provides information for people in need, which is available by visiting www.uwlanc.org or calling 211.

Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society has changed its name to Mennonite Life to welcome new communities and generations into Mennonite history and local history movements. The name change and rebrand signify a renewed commitment to clear communication and indicate that the organization is open to everyone. Those choosing the new name felt that Mennonite Life
improves visual impact and will be easy to remember. The Mennonite Life campus on Millstream Road in Lancaster offers a Visitors Center, formerly called Mennonite Information Center, which introduces guests to Mennonites and hosts the Biblical Tabernacle Experience. In the Collections building, visitors can enjoy the Mennonite Life Museum or research using its archives and library.
The museum in Willow Street has gone by many names, starting with The Hans Herr House. Realizing the house was built by Christian Herr, and there was no definitive documentation on whether Christian’s father, Hans, ever lived there, the name changed more than a decade ago to the 1719 Herr House & Museum. The 1719 Museum simplifies the existing name.
At the 1719 Museum, visitors can immerse themselves in 18th-century life through a guided visit to the 1719 Herr House.
