“All Is Calm” Highlights Peace On Earth BY CATHY MOLITORIS
hen Susquehanna Stage first performed “All Is Calm” five years ago, the cast wasn’t sure how the audience was reacting to the 80-minute show. “There really isn’t a break in the action, and there’s no intermission, so the audience was very quiet,” recalled Jim Johnson, who is directing the show again this year. “We were wondering what they thought, and then when it ended, they just burst into applause.” The show was so well received, in fact, that all performances sold out from word of mouth after opening night. “All Is Calm” will run at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, from Friday, Dec. 3 through Sunday, Dec. 12. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 3, Saturday, Dec. 4, Thursday, Dec. 9, Friday, Dec. 10 and Saturday, Dec. 11. Performances will be at 2 p.m. on Dec. 11 and 12, and at 7 p.m. on Sunday,

Dec. 5. Featuring an all-male cast of 12, the show tells the true story of a Christmas truce struck between the German and Allied soldiers at the start of World War I in 1914. “On Christmas Eve, the troops came together, shared stories, played a soccer game and celebrated Christmas,” explained Steve Sturgis, who performs in the show. He added that the peace ended the next day when the war resumed. The conflict continued for another four years. The story of “All Is Calm” is told through actual letters from soldiers, making it an emotional experience, said performer Rob Hein. “There’s a poignancy to this show,” he remarked. “These events actually happened, so to be able to share the stories of these soldiers is very moving.” His castmate Clint Burdick agreed, adding, “It’s an honor to tell their stories. There’s laughter and there’s sadness in this show. It’s a show full of emotions.” See Peace pg 4

School recalled talking about the importance of celebrating culture during February, Black History Month, when inspiration struck. “I thought we needed more recognition of culture and ethnicity in our school and that this could be a good thing to bring us all together,” she said. “So, I brought the idea to my friends.” Amy and her friends formed the Cultural Awareness Team, and the group began meeting as an unofficial school club. Main St. A tree lighting will take place at 7 p.m. “We start to gather at the tree around 6:45 p.m. for choir singing,” Schell said. “Who doesn’t want to see the town tree get lit? It is an amazing moment each year. Schell said Winterfest is offered each year to bring the community together. “It gives everyone in and around Mount Joy a chance to relax, start the holiday season and have a great, family-friendly time downtown,” he remarked. “Attendees can discover a new shop or restaurant downtown, learn more about the local organizations and listen to some great local music artists.” Main Street Mount Joy is also hosting a Downtown Elf Hunt this year. “There are 38 elves hidden downtown,” Schell explained. “Your job is to find as many as you can. They will be inside or outside local businesses and offices. Some you can see through the front windows. Some will require you to go inside the building and look around.” Participants are encouraged to document the location where the elf was found and where it was located at the site. Whoever finds the most elves will win a prize collection from downtown businesses. outgoing and to get out of my own bubble,” Neville stated. “Having people from different cultures in our school and in our club helps me want to understand them and where they are coming from.” Sariah said the club has inspired the members to act. “This has been opportunity for us to step up to the plate,” she explained. “We all have a passion for this. We want to do another culture fair this year and do it even bigger, and we’d like the idea of this team to move beyond the school, out into the community and beyond.” For Sophia, the club has offered a place to feel at home. “I found confidence to like who I am and what my culture is,” she remarked. “I felt insecure about who I was and that my experiences were way different from others’, but this has helped me feel like I’m part of something.” Advisers for the club include school social worker Christina Helfrick, counselors Adrianne Lindeman and Danielle Kuhn and assistant principal Heather Hairhoger. The Cultural Awareness Team is looking for community partners to come to club meetings or participate in the culture fair and share their experiences. This setup presents some challenges, said cast member Alex Flattery. “You can’t rely on the pit orchestra for your pitch,” he said. “You have to rely on the guys to the left and right of you.” Dean Sauder said rehearsing for the show has been a unique experience. “It’s the highlight of my day to come and rehearse and to be able to participate in this show,” he stated. “It’s challenging, but it’s so rewarding to be a part of this.” The emotional pull of performing in “All Is Calm” was so great that nine of the 12 cast members from the previous production have returned for this year’s performance. Sturgis urges audiences to pay par-
ticular attention to the show’s epilogue. “It really pulls everything together,” he noted, adding that the show emphasizes our shared humanity even in the midst of conflict. “It will get you thinking, ‘Why do we do this? Why do we have war? Why do fight with each other?’” Johnson said it’s not common practice for Susquehanna Stage to repeat a show so soon, but this one made such an impact he wanted to do it again. “I just love the theme of this show, the idea of peace,” he remarked. “This is not a typical Christmas show - there’s no Santa. Jenna M. Walmer, a resident of Mount Joy, received a $1,000 scholarship from Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) to attend graduate school at Syracuse University, College of Arts and Sciences, Syracuse, N.Y. This fall, Walmer is attending Syracuse University in pursuit of a doctorate in social psychology. Walmer graduated from Bridgewater College in 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts in international studies. Walmer was a varsity swimmer for Bridgewater and broke three school records during her four years on the team. She was also involved with the swim program at a local YMCA as a lead age group coach. Walmer

She spent a month studying at Oxford University through Bridgewater’s Flory Fellows program, studying under one of the world’s leading Holocaust historians. She also received a Master of Science in psychology from West Chester. Her studies focused on analyzing Holocaust diaries to demonstrate how adolescent development acted as a form of resilience for the diarists. The 35th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 18. Once again, the holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only. There will be no pick-up location at the Barnstormers’ stadium. Artistic depictions of a hearthealthy summer earned seven local students recognition from Penn State Health Children’s Hospital and the American Heart Association in a recent contest. Among the winners were Donegal Intermediate School students Payton Sargen, second place, and Lucy Smolinski, fourth place. The winners were honored during a virtual ceremony on Oct. 14. The art contest, now in its fifth year, asked local students in grades three through eight to create artwork that represents how they stay heart healthy during the summer. The win-
ning artwork included illustrations about eating healthy, staying active by riding bikes and swimming, playing with pets, growing healthy foods in home gardens, staying hydrated and staying safe in the sun. The art contest is part of Penn State Health Children’s Hospital’s Youth Health Movement Platform Sponsorship with the American Heart Association. In addition to the art contest, more than 10,500 students in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and York counties who participate in the American Heart Association’s Kids Heart Challenge program receive a quarterly newsletter containing family heart health tips.
