Ringing In The Holiday Season With Winterfest By Chelsea Peifer

Main Street Mount Joy (MSMJ) invites the community to its 21st annual Winterfest on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 4 to 7 p.m. Local vendors, churches, and organizations will be set up along Main Street from Delta to Barbara streets. The free event will feature live music, crafts, food and beverages, a children’s train ride, walking carolers, and visits with Santa Claus. The evening will culminate with a town tree lighting ceremony at 7 p.m. located off East Main Street by the town clock. Santa Claus is scheduled to visit with children and families inside the Sheetz Funeral Home, 16 E. Main St., Mount Joy, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. People may bring cameras to take photographs with Santa. Live music will be presented from 4:15 to 6:45 p.m., including performances by Fire in the Glen, a Lancaster-based trio that blends traditional Irish, Scottish, and Cape Breton styles with its own energetic and eclectic approach. Several members of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Mount Joy will stroll through town for the event as a walking choir. MSMJ executive director Dave Schell noted that the 2018 Winterfest will feature more vendors than last year. Haunted Lantern Tour To Return With “Mortality Within” in” By Chelsea Peifer

Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright chose the theme of “Mortality Within” for Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour this year because they wanted to introduce people to a not-often-talked-about aspect of the rivertown’s history. The theme will focus on the disease and poverty that struck Columbia and other communities in earlier days, discussing the presence of pesthouses and sanitariums and how much things have changed. “It shows how people suffered more than they had to because they didn’t have the

Popular characters from past years will also reappear, Wright said, such as William Campbell, a local trapper who died from rabies and is buried in Columbia’s historic Mount Bethel Cemetery. The students were honored by members of the Rotary Club during its monthly luncheon meeting. Lauren is the daughter of Diane Renner of Mount Joy and Brian Stwalley of Dillsburg. She is a member of the Math Honor Society, the National Honor Society, FBLA, Senator for a Day, and Democracy Day. Lauren is president of both Student Council and the senior class. Donegal Intermediate School (DIS) recently opened new gaga pits. Each year, the school’s PTO donates a gift to the outgoing sixth-grade class. The PTO usually provides sketchbooks needed for the students’ upcoming seventh-grade art class. For the remaining student body, a matching gift is provided. This year, a more longlasting gift gaga pits for the third- and fourth-grade playground and for the fifth- and sixth-grade playground - was suggested. Through mutual contacts, PTO members were put in touch with Seth Hackman of Troop 267 of Silver Spring. PTO representatives met with Seth and shared their idea for the playground gaga pit. Seth agreed to organize the project as his Eagle Scout project. The PTO agreed to support Seth in the endeavor by helping to obtain approval for the installation and asking families to donate monies toward the cost of the project. The gaga pits were constructed

The show’s music is directed by Johnathan Bauer and underscored by pairings of harp, cello, guitar, and penny whistle, played live at select performances by Emily Aziza and Tony Marini. First produced by Servant Stage in 2015, this original adaptation is unique in that every word is taken from Dickens’ text, bringing the holiday classic to life through the collaborative storytelling of eight performers, all playing multiple roles. A Holiday Fused Glass Workshop for people age 9 and up will be led by Kathleen Forney on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 1 p.m. Forney will guide young participants to create a fused glass holiday ornament. There is a fee, registration is required, and space is limited. During Preschool Super Science on Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 10:30 a.m., Miss Jan will lead themed science experiments or activities relating to the lives of 3- to 6year-olds. Lego Club, for people of all ages, will take place at 6 p.m. on Dec. 11. Legos will be provided. Family Story Time will be offered on Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 12 and 13, at 10:30 a.m., and families may enjoy stories, songs, and a craft based on a theme of the week. Sensory Story Time will be offered on Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 10:30 a.m. The program is geared toward children ages 3 to 5 who are differently abled, who may be on the autism spectrum, who have sensory processing issues, or who feel overwhelmed by noises or crowds. A make-and-take craft featuring book page ornaments will be offered on Dec. 12 at 6 p.m. Attendees of all ages will craft ornaments from the pages of old books. All supplies will be provided, including books, glue, glitter, and various embellishments, but participants are asked to bring a good pair of scissors and any special embellishments that they want to use, such as family pictures and old holiday cards to cut up. Club Plans Holiday Tour Of Homes By Chelsea Peifer

Driving through downtown Manheimâ€™s historic Market Square during the holiday season has a way of evoking all the warm feelings of an old-fashioned Christmas, from the twinkly lights to the enormous tree and the decorated businesses and homes. This year, people will have the chance to see the inside of one of the stunning homes in the square, as well as five others throughout Manheim, as part of the Womenâ€™s Club of Manheim (WCM) Holiday Tour of Homes on Sunday, Dec. 2, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The iconic Georgian Revival mansion at 2 N. Charlotte St., owned by Ben and Kami Deppen and home to Big Dream Creative Art Studio, will be one of the tour stops fully decorated for the season. The Deppens are currently in the process of restoring the interior and exterior of the home while aiming to maintain its architectural integrity. Each December, train lovers of all ages flock to Elizabethtown to enjoy two elaborate miniature train displays located about a mile and a half apart from each other: the Train Guys at the Elizabethtown Public Library and the Masonic Village & Elizabethtown (MV&E) Model Railroad Club. The Train Guys, comprising approximately 20 volunteers, have been at work since October setting up a train display that fills the basement of the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St. O-gauge trains run through detailed towns decorated for the holidays, and there are areas featuring G-scale and standardgauge trains and accessories. Describing the display as highly interactive, Train Guy Craig Coble noted that it features 50 buttons for folks to press. â€œThe trains range in age from 100 years old to brand new,â€? Coble noted. â€œWeâ€™ll be showing things that are very unusual and appreciated by collectors and

things that will appeal to children, such as Chuggington and Thomas.â€? This year, the east end of the display has been reconfigured to include an elevated line. Local business Groff â€™s Meats will be featured on a bi-level stock car. Train Guy Tom Matesevac noted that the club has featured an area business for years, and a limited number of the featured train cars are also available to purchase. Visitors may enter to win other train items in a silent auction and giveaway drawings. The 2018 display will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in December; from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 1, 8, and 15; and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 22 and 29, in the lower level of the Elizabethtown Public Library. The exhibit will also be open from 6 to 8 p.m. for Second Friday on Dec. 14. Private showings are available by calling 717-367-7467. For the ninth year in a row, Donegal High School joined forces with Milanof-Schock Library to participate in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record early literacy campaign. On Oct. 25, 50

high school athletes boarded a bus and traveled to Donegal Intermediate and Primary schools in the Donegal School District. The student-athletes had

brought copies of the book “Maybe Something Beautiful: How Art Transformed a Neighborhood” by F. Isabel Campoy and Theresa Howell. The highschoolers read the book to every child in kindergarten through sixth grade in attendance that day, totaling 2,046 children. This total was a new record for the local effort. Additionally, the students delivered one copy of “Maybe Something Beautiful” to every classroom in the Donegal Primary School. The books had been donated by the Norlanco-Rheems Kiwanis Club.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Lancaster County is recruiting volunteers. With November being National Adoption Month, community members are encouraged to support the thousands of children across the country in need of permanent families by becoming a CASA. A CASA volunteer is a trained citizen age 21 or up who is appointed by a judge to represent the best interest of a child in court. The children that CASA volunteers advocate for have been abused or neglected and placed into the foster care system. CASA volunteers work to help ensure a safe and permanent home for the child as quickly as possible. The process to become a CASA volunteer advocate is multistep and includes an interview, training and shadowing. This process equips CASA volunteer advocates to work alongside youths who are

in foster care. According to the organization, older youths who are served by a CASA are more likely to set goals for their future and have clear ideas about how to achieve them and are less likely to be homeless, in trouble, or in jail. CASA will hold a Tuesday, Dec. 18, information session from noon to 1 p.m. at Paul Davis Restoration, 1816 Olde Homestead Lane, Lancaster, for its winter 2019 training class beginning in February. CASA information sessions are an hourlong introduction and overview of the role of a CASA volunteer advocate. Attending an information session is a required first step in applying to the program. Over the past six months, LASS has made presentations and convened conversations with multiple organizations and key stakeholders that directly or indirectly deal with the quality of living in Lancaster. As this educational process unfolded, a number of sparks were ignited. Lancaster’s director for countywide planning, Scott Standish, confirmed that the Age-Friendly principles are aligned with the county’s comprehensive plan under development, places 2040. Millersville University School of Social Work’s chairperson, Karen Rice, said she was excited about the opportunities that the program held for the students and older adults. Partnering with the geography department, students have begun to survey and collect data about services throughout the county. The results of this environmental scan will be mapped and shared with key stakeholders upon completion. The county board of commissioners supported the concept of the Age-Friendly program at its July 10 work session. Lancaster County Office of Aging’s executive director, Lon Wible, recommended that the commissioners consider applying for designation as an Age-Friendly County after Millersville University completes its environmental scan. Lancaster Downtowners and Landis Communities committed to help the City of Lancaster launch its five-year Cycle of AgeFriendly Continual Improvement. Presented by councilman Ismail Smith-Wade-El, the Lancaster City Council unanimously endorsed applying for Age-Friendly designation at its Oct. 9 meeting. Matt Johnson, the mayor’s chief of staff, will be coordinating the city’s application through AARP, WHO’s U.S. affiliate. Lancaster City Council took the next step toward receiving the World Health Organization’s (WHO) designation as an AgeFriendly City by unanimously approving a resolution supporting the city’s application to join the Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communties (GNAFCC.) The seeds for the GNAFCC were planted in 2007 when WHO published “A Guide to Age-Friendly Cities.” This study suggests eight areas that support an active and healthy environment for all ages; these include housing, transportation and health services, civic participation, employment, respect and social inclusion. From the 33 cities initially involved in the study, the network has now grown to 705 cities and communities in 39 countries. Unlike many designations that require certain milestones to first be achieved, the Age-Friendly designation is aspirational. It signifies the municipality’s intention to become more age-friendly by embarking on a five-year cycle of planning, implementing and evaluating projects that make the community a great place to grow old.
