Winterfest Will Bring Cheer To Town

Every December, Main Street in Mount Joy becomes a living portrait of community spirit. Neighbors, churches, businesses and service clubs come together to host Winterfest, a celebration that wraps the town in lights, laughter and hometown pride.

The 27th annual Winterfest will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, along Main Street from Market to Barbara streets in Mount Joy. Representatives from various service organizations, including the Rotary Club, the Lions Club, Kiwanis, Friends of Donegal and the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce, will join community volunteers to host the festive event.

“Come for the kids’ activities, the music, the food and the crafts,” said Ferne Silberman, who is helping to organize Winterfest. “We have a huge area for the kids.”

Organizer Linda Eberly noted that Mount Joy Church of God donates the use of its property for the kids’ area.

“We’ve put all of the kids’ activities in one area, making it easier for the parents,” Eberly said. “It’s a nice, large spot for families to gather.”

Children’s activities will include a petting zoo

Growing up in the Harrisburg area, Dave Astuto learned the importance of giving back from an early age. When Astuto, the son of a pastor, moved to Mount Joy 16 years ago, he wanted to connect with the community. His most recent effort directly impacts students in Donegal School District.

“I have four businesses along Main Street in Mount Joy,” Astuto said, adding that he knew some people were experiencing severe

Dinner Theater Will Spread Christmas Spirit

“This is going to be an unforgettable night of laughter, music and meaning,” said Bob Fisher, describing “The Real Meaning of Christmas.” “We’re going to pack as much fun and entertainment into the evening as possible.”

“The Real Meaning of Christmas,” a free dinner theater show, will be presented on Sunday, Dec. 7, at 5:30 p.m. at Florin Church of the Brethren, 815 Bruce Ave., Mount Joy. Doors will open at 5 p.m.

“There is going to be a lot going on that evening,” said Bob, who is the show’s creator and director. “Our waiters will be in the show, performing and encouraging the people at the tables to get involved. We’ll be singing Christmas songs all evening, and we’ll have skits that tell the story of Christmas. We’re going to end the evening with a really memorable activity.”

Details for that activity will be revealed at the event, he said, noting that everyone in the community is invited to attend the dinner theater.

“The target audience is those people who really need to hear the good news of Jesus, have a fun night out and have some hope in their life,” Bob shared. “We feel we can provide that through this program.”

The idea for the dinner theater began after Bob’s wife, Marcywho is the music director at the church - suggested holding a hymn sing.

That idea soon transformed into a full-blown dinner theater.

“I went out there to look for things to adapt or reuse, but

I couldn’t find anything that was telling the story I thought needed to be told,” Bob said.

So, he turned to a very modern tool to tell a timeless tale: ChatGPT.

“ChatGPT helped me write a script, and I added to that,” he said. “I have rewritten it about 12 times.”

Bob explained that the event will begin with people checking in and meeting their waiter.

“Each table will have one or more of their own waiters,” he shared. “They will greet people and tell them what to expect. We’ll have music playing during that time and hors d’oeuvres as people

gather together.”

Waiters will serve the plated dinner, and the show will include five short and funny skits, all with quick costume changes, props and scenery.

“We hope to end the evening with lighted candles and singing ‘Silent Night,’” Bob said. “It’s not going to be a heavy evangelical evening. These are comedy skits that give the story of Christmas. My intent is to get people thinking and enjoying the season.”

Bob has been pleasantly surprised by how enthusiastically church members have embraced his idea for the show.

“Participation from our church has been phenomenal,” he said. “We have about 35 to 40 waiters lined up and about 10 to 12 people as the core of our actors. My wife has lined up about four to six soloists who will perform.”

The meal will be prepared by church member Nancy Shonk, who has coordinated many community meals over the years, Bob said.

Bob noted that his intent with the event is to draw the audience in to participate and share the joy of the holiday season.

“It’s not going to be a professional show, but it’s going to be a lot of fun at a time when we all

need encouragement and hope,” he said.

He hopes to make the event an annual tradition.

“I really want the community businesses and organizations to be involved,” he remarked. “I’d like to get donations and sponsorships. Right now, we’re funding this through our church, but we hope to make it even bigger in the future.”

“The Real Meaning of Christmas” is free to attend, but tickets are requested to give organizers an idea of how many people to expect. For tickets, visit www .florincob.org/register.

of alpacas from Eastland Alpacas; a Little Shoppers area, where children can purchase gifts for family and friends (by cash only); face painting by Faith Outreach Church; a RAISE28 prize wheel; a Bible2School giant prize snowman; a Fellowship of Christian Athletes penguin craft; and Little Notes music and instruments for kids to play. Children can also register to win a playhouse provided by Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. The winner will be drawn at the event. Winterfest will also feature a visit from the Jolly Old Elf himself. Santa will ride through town and arrive at

Sheetz Funeral Home via a deckedout golf cart. The Santa experience and treats are sponsored by Sheetz Funeral Home, where clowns will be creating balloon art, which is sponsored by The Ferne Silberman Team. New this year, stilt walkers, sponsored by Buch Funeral Home, will be navigating Main Street.

Winterfest will also feature lots of options for food, as well as musical performances and other entertainment.

“This year, we are interspersing the food vendors in with the other participants rather than having a separate area for food,” Eberly said.

Tables from nearly 50 local nonprofit organizations, school groups and churches will also be featured, and many of the groups will sell items as fundraisers for their

organizations. Mount Joy-area businesses will also have stands with promotional materials, prize wheels, drawings and giveaways.

Local artisans offering handmade items suitable for gift giving will also be available.

Participating restaurants will include Bube’s Brewery, Noel’s Café, Piper Belles BBQ, Rotary Fry Wagon, Spud Muffin, Papa’s Pizza, Florin Church of the Brethren, The Donut Guys, Two Cousins, Twisted Bine Beer Co. and the Lions Club.

Local restaurants on Main Street will also be open during the day, as well as local retail establishments.

Twisted Bine will also host live music during the event.

“Winterfest is a family-friendly event,” Eberly said. “Come downtown to enjoy musical entertain -

ment on the main stage, located in front of St. Mark’s UMC.” The stage is provided by Guardian Barriers. Groups will begin playing at 2 p.m., and music will continue until 4:45 p.m. Performers will include Sandy Heisey on keyboard, Trinity Lutheran Church children’s choir, Mary Mother of the Church children’s choir, SweetLife Music, Donegal Rhythm Singers and the Donegal Alumni Band.

At 5 p.m., the Donegal Alumni Band will march the crowd from the stage area to the Rotary Clock, where they will lead a carol singalong, followed by the tree-lighting ceremony.

“I thought, ‘I’m just going to call Donegal up and see if there were any kids who were having trouble paying for food.’”

Astuto connected with Morgan Hiestand, director of food service for the district, who told him the need is great - and growing.

pay off their balances,” Hiestand said.

That’s where Astuto jumped in, donating $2,000 toward Donegal lunch debts.

“Now that we are blessed the way we are, we want to take that stigma away and help people so that they can get the necessities they need,” he said.

“Thankfully, with the National School Lunch Program, we never deny anyone a lunch,” Hiestand said. “A kid can come up and get a lunch regardless of what their account is. We never say no.”

However, each student who can’t pay for his or her meal accrues a lunch debt, and that figure can add up quickly.

“Families are struggling to

“I don’t have kids who go to Donegal, but I have a toy store, so the kids in the area are very important to me,” said Astuto, who operates Dave’s Toybox among other Mount Joy businesses. “I don’t want to see a kid ever go hungry.”

The mission is personal for Astuto.

“I was the kid in school that had to get free and reduced-cost lunch, and there was a real stigma with that. I hated that,” he recalled.

“When I got into 10th grade, I never went and got my lunch token, because it was a stigma and you were seen as a poor kid, so I didn’t do it.”

When Astuto and his wife, Joy Helsel, were first married, they didn’t have the financial capacity to donate to community causes, although both still took active roles as community volunteers.

Astuto emphasized that his donation will be an ongoing one, as long as the need exists.

Hiestand is grateful for the support and noted that her cafeteria staff members appreciate it as well.

“We’ve seen an increase in families that are needing more support,” she shared. “Every year it seems like there are more families that need extra help. They might not qualify for free and reduced-cost lunches, but there’s still a need. My cafeteria workers are working harder than ever because our numbers of meals are increasing.”

Hiestand said the community can support Donegal students in another simple way that makes a big impact.

“Giant in Mount Joy gives us a donation every year,” she said. “When you’re at the register and

Lunch from pg 1 See Lunch pg 5

it says, ‘Do you want to round up?’ that money comes to us. If people are unable to give a large donation, they can support students just by rounding up at the checkout register. Rounding up those pennies does come back to the community, and a little bit can add up to a lot.”

Astuto, who is on the board of Friends of Donegal, said he hopes to inspire other people, businesses and organizations to support Donegal students.

“There is a need, and we need to do what we can to step to fill the gap for that, especially people who have it to give. It would be awesome if other business owners did this as well,” he said. “We’re lucky enough to be in a situation where we have it to give, and we want to be able to give it to our community.”

Along with the toy store, Astuto and Helsel operate The Joy of Sweets and Treats, The Astute Artisan and Dave’s Cleanouts and Collectibles.

“The reason why we’re successful is because people from our community come into our stores and spend money,” he said. “It would be absolutely horrible if we didn’t give back

in some way to the people who are making us successful. That’s really important to us.”

Hiestand said she’s been overwhelmed by Asuto’s generosity and the support of other community members.

She continued by saying that a school lunch costs less than $3, which might not seem like much, but can quickly add up, especially for families with multiple children in the district.

“Even if someone wanted to just pay off a week of lunches for a student, that could be so helpful for a family,” she said. “It’s all about the community coming together to help. It’s been amazing to see that we have people who want to help right here.”

our master of ceremonies for the Christmas Tree Lighting, which ends the evening,” Eberly said.

“Good’s Tree and Lawn Care has volunteered to do the lights on the tree this year in coordination with Fire Department Mount Joy,” Silberman said, noting that Jeff Bollinger of Bollinger Mechanical was also instrumental in making sure the tree is the focus of the event. “Jeff repaired the star that was damaged last year during a wind event. If Jeff would not have been able to repair the star, we would have been looking at $2,000 or more to replace the star.”

She also expressed thanks to Blake Brubaker for the use of the tree, which is on his property. Brubaker also provides storage for the ornaments, lights and star.
