any boys look up to their father and want to be just like him, but for Erik Marsh and son Landon Marsh, the father has also been inspired by his son. In fact, when Landon, a seventh-grader at Donegal Intermediate School, decided to try weightlifting, he invited his dad to join him. Now the two have taken their sport to the highest level, winning first place in their divisions in the International Powerlifting Association competition at York Barbell in June.
experience with weightlifting and was excited about joining his son in their first competition in 2020, but just weeks before the event, he tore his triceps and couldn’t compete. Still, he was happy to cheer on Landon, who went on to win first place in his division at the 2020 competition. Erik worked on healing and the pair continued to train, with the goal of competing together in 2021. At the competition in June, Erik benched 320 pounds to win first place in his division and Landon benched a personal best of 135 pounds. That weight not only

Landon started lifting in fifth grade, after learning that he had a medical condition that prevented him from participating in contact sports. He realized weightlifting was a sport he could enjoy with his father, so he asked his dad to join him, and soon the pair was training for competition with Eric Schwarz of Showtime Training in Lititz. “I love weightlifting because I get to spend time with my dad,” Landon stated, “but I also like that it’s about setting goals and pushing yourself.” Erik, who played football in high school and college, had some

brought him first place in his division, but he also set state and world records and earned the Most Valuable Youth award. “My highest bench before the competition was 130,” Landon recalled. “I had tried 135 in training, but I didn’t get it. I was pretty nervous trying it in the competition, but I thought I’d just go for it.” Landon’s feat is especially impressive when you consider he benched 3 pounds more than his own body weight. Landon plans to keep competing and has set his next goal of benching 150 pounds. “I want to keep pushing so I can make my dad proud and because not a lot of kids get to break two world records,” he said. For Erik, however, weightlifting will now just become a hobby he can do with his son. “I think that’s it for me as far as competing, but I still plan to keep on lifting,” he remarked. “We train every Wednesday, and it’s wonderful to get that time with my son. I look forward to it every week.” Landon’s mom, Michelle, said she’s proud of both Erik and Landon, noting, “I could not be prouder of Landon. It blows my mind how much he’s grown and how much he’s progressed in this sport.” Michelle and Erik, who also have an 8-year-old daughter, Lillian, said weightlifting has provided Landon with life skills beyond the bench. “It has taught him discipline, setting goals, building a work ethic,” Erik said. “It’s taught him about finding success, but also about disappointment. It’s really taught him a lot about many different aspects of life.”

Santa Claus is coming to town, courtesy of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce. The jolly old elf will greet children at the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, Nov. 27 and Dec. 11. “Years ago, when I was a kid growing up, we used to have a Santa’s house in Mount Joy, and it sat outside where you could come in and tell Santa what you wanted for Christmas,” recalled Kerry Meyers, Chamber executive director. “We wanted to bring that back in some way and bring back that feeling of nostalgia.” See Santa pg 5

a dessert. Seniors will also receive a gift bag full of a variety of goodies. “No one goes home without a present,” Bechtold said. She began serving the meal to seniors 34 years ago, when she worked as director of the Columbia Senior Center. Luzader joined her a year later. “We wanted to give seniors who are alone on Christmas not just a meal but also a chance to be with other people,” Bechtold stated. “We wanted to let them know that when the holiday is here, people in the community are here for them.” The meal is open to all seniors age 55 and up throughout Lancaster County and surrounding areas. Bechtold noted that seniors have come from York County and even from out of state in past years. “This is not just for lowincome seniors. It’s open to any senior who is looking for a meal or who would otherwise be spending the holiday alone,” Bechtold explained. “Maybe they have family who live out of the area or maybe they don’t have any family. It’s open to everyone.”

changed their plans just a bit. Like last year, this year’s lunch will only be offered to go, but seniors will have the opportunity to come inside and pick up their meals. The lunch will be served on Christmas Day, Saturday, Dec. 25, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Hambones Social Club of the Columbia Borough Fire Department, 726 Manor St. The lunch will include ham, turkey, mashed potatoes, a vegetable, cranberry sauce and

The fire hall donates the space for the meal, and the Columbia Lions Club provides donations as well. Bechtold also encourages donations of cash or gift cards from the community to support the event. Members of the Donegal High School wrestling team help with setup on Christmas Eve. Although the meal is not a sit-down event this year, Bechtold said there is still an opportunity to visit with friends. “We can introduce people who may be new in town and encourage fellowship while they pick up their meals,” she noted. Bechtold said that watching people connect with each other is her favorite aspect of the event. “I love seeing smiles on people’s faces,” she commented. “That’s the best part of Christmas for me. It’s knowing we are spreading joy. We want to make Christmas an enjoyable day for everyone.” Masks and social distancing will be required for meal pickup. Reservations are required for the meal by Friday, Dec. 17. Walk-ins will not be accepted. Delivery and transportation options will not be available this year. Donegal Football Falls in District Quarterfinal

The Indians concluded their 2021 season on the gridiron with a 28-14 loss to the Kennard-Dale Rams in the quarterfinal round of the PIAA District III tournament on November 12th. “The kids played their
hearts,” praised head coach Chad Risberg. A 7-2 regular season, featuring a 3-1 mark in league showdowns, earned the Indians the distinction of runners-up in L-L Section Three and propelled the club into the playoff season. Having earned a first-round bye, the mid-November road
trip to Fawn Grove for the match against the Rams was their initial post-season showdown. Kennard-Dale struck early with a first quarter TD, but the Indians stayed in the mix with a running touchdown from Noah Rohrer, (77 total rushing yards) in a second quarter response.
A pivotal 43-yard fumble return from James Turbedsky took the Indians on their second trip to the endzone and gave them a brief 14-13 lead in the third period. Unfortunately, the Rams regrouped for a final surge, amassing 15 points in the closing quarter to recapture the
lead. Donegal junior Jon Holmes racked up 54 yards in the effort, and Rohrer boosted the Tribe’s score with a two-for-two PAT showing. Defensively, senior Ian Brown led the team in takedowns with 13 tackles, Rohrer had 11, and Holmes added 10.
“Overall, it was a great season. One of the most memorable for me as a coach. The kids put a lot of work in, and it paid off,” Risberg went on to say. “The seniors were a special group. They led by example and showed the younger kids how to prepare and play the game. I will forever miss them.”

On Sunday, November 14th, the Lancaster-Lebanon League Cross Country All-Stars were recognized at this year’s annual banquet held at the Manheim Central High School stadium. The Donegal Cross Country team had three individuals named to the Section Two First Team All-Star roster (Sam Rothstein, Hunter Gehman, and Hadley Shoaf, a four-time selection) and three individuals named as Section Two Second Team All-Stars (Kathryn Fernald, Marleigh Ballard, and Addison Houck). The Chamber began hosting Santa a few years ago at another location in town, but soon the crowd outgrew that space. Last year, Santa greeted families outside at the library, but this year’s event will be inside in the program room. “Lanco Federal Credit Union is our sponsor for this event, and they will be providing a photo taken with Santa for every family,” Meyers stated. “That’s free for families.” Each child who attends will also receive coloring pages and a cookie to take home, she said. Chamber Christmas ornaments, which depict the Mount Joy Rotary clock, will be for sale on both days.
Cash or checks will be accepted to purchase an ornament. On Nov. 27, the Friends of the MilanofSchock Library will have a table with doll clothes, jewelry, Christmas books, puzzles and games for purchase. Additionally, the Chamber will accept donations for the library’s Mitten Tree. The library will collect new mittens, hats, scarves and other cold-weather gear to donate to local charitable organizations, a tradition that began in 1999 when the new library opened. “We encourage families to come out and visit Santa and to help support others in their community,” Meyers

As it has for more than 30 years, the community of Columbia will lend a hand to those in need this Christmas season. The annual Christmas Food Box Delivery will take place on Sunday, Dec. 19. The effort is organized by the Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers, and aid is also provided by area businesses and organizations and hundreds of volunteers. Each year, hundreds of boxes are packed with essential holiday dinner items and additional grocery staples. Each box contains a turkey, bread, milk, canned vegetables, cereals, and more. The method of packing the food boxes will be determined closer to the event to adhere to current COVID guidelines. Organizers will need many drivers to deliver the boxes on Dec. 19. Volunteer drivers should arrive at 11 a.m. at the Columbia Borough Fire Department, 726 Manor St., Columbia, where they will be directed
to line up for the touchless delivery system. Toys will no longer be delivered with the food boxes. Organizers encourage families to sign up for Toys for Toys or contact Hands Across the Street for toys. Organizers anticipate that 600 boxes will be packed and delivered to families in Columbia and the surrounding areas with ZIP codes 17512, 17547, 17368, 17554, 17582, 17575, and 17538. Families that need a Christmas food box can register by emailing Columbia ChristmasFoodBoxes@gmail. com or calling 717-7153592. Email contact is preferred to ensure accuracy. The deadline to register is Friday, Dec. 3, and early registration is encouraged. The organizations will deliver a Christmas dinner on Sunday, Dec. 26, to residents of local senior apartments - such as Trinity House, St. Peters Apartments, Our Home of Hope, Marietta Senior Apart-

Families are invited to join Santa for story time at the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Nov. 30 through Dec. 21. Santa will be available for visits with children on those same evenings from 7 to 8 p.m. as well as on Friday, Dec. 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturdays, Dec. 11 and 18, from noon to 2 p.m. Families can also visit with Santa following the parade, which will begin at 4 p.m. on Dec. 11. The theme of this year’s parade is “Hometown Holidays.” The parade will spotlight the joy of the holidays in small towns and will mark a return to a traditional parade after last year’s reverse parade held on the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds. “The parade is always very well attended,” said Karen Eberly, senior program coordinator for GEARS. “We have
judges who give out prizes, and we get a variety of participants. It’s a fun way to spend a Saturday.” The parade will travel on Market Street from West Bainbridge Street to Winnemore and Mechanics alleys. Although the parade won’t have bands this year, since local high schools have opted out due to the pandemic, it will still feature a variety of elements, Eberly noted. “We’ll have lots of awesome floats,” she stated. “If you like parades, you definitely need to come out for this one.” Participants will include local businesses and organizations, churches, Scout troops and the Elizabethtown Fire Department. The parade is sponsored by T-Mobile. “It’s going to be a lot of fun, and it’s a great way to start your holiday season,” Eberly said. Auscultation Brass
The Auscultation Brass will present a Christmas concert on Sunday, Dec. 5, at 2 p.m. at Glossbrenner United Methodist Church, 713 Church St., Mount Joy. The concert will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association and will be hosted by Harry’s Heroes, a local Walk to End Alzheimer’s team. Harry’s Heroes is composed of Mary and Linda Reheard, Lancaster; Sandy Heisey, Mount Joy; and David and Patty Audette, Woodlawn, Wash. The team is named for Harry W. Reheard, husband and father of Mary and Linda, respectively. Harry passed
away as a result of Alzheimer’s disease on Oct. 18, 2002. The members of Harry’s Heroes also walk in memory of Dan Heisey, Sandy’s father, and in support of all people who have Alzheimer’s. The members of Auscultation Brass are Rolf Andersen, Tom Anderson, Bob Belser Jr., Joe Breslin, Michael Chambers, Dan Diehl, Bill Lovett, Andy Lutzkanin, Kirby Strohmaier, Bill Roberts and Gerald Rothacker. Strohmaier is an OR nurse, and the other members are physicians. Refreshments will be served after the concert.
