That is what Marietta’s Candlelight Tour is - an unforgettable day you wouldn’t want to miss.” The tour, which is hosted by Marietta Restoration Associates, will be held on Sunday, Dec. 7, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. throughout Marietta. It will feature eight private homes that will be open for tourgoers to explore and pick up holiday inspiration. “ T he Marietta C hristmas Candlelight Tour is all about celebrating the history, love and culture of Marietta, Pa.,” said Baltozer. “This is our 59th tour, which makes us one of the oldest home tours! Tour-comers should also be on the lookout for nearby businesses open to enjoy holiday shopping, a refreshment or to come inside for warmth.” Choosing homes to feature on the tour can be a daunting task, because Marietta is filled with so many places full of history and charm. “We have a House Hunting Committee that asks Marietta residents to be on tour to open their home,” explained Joanne Dancause, Marietta Restoration A ssociates volunteer. “ T he committee has ample amounts of knowledge of the homes in

The evening will culminate with the singing of ‘Silent Night.’” A Nativity scene will also be featured at the event, enhancing a tradition that began almost 80 years ago. In about 1948, after Maytown resident and Maytown Church of God elder Richard Gallo returned from World War II, he built a Nativity for the square. “It was presumedly displayed every Christmas season until it became in disrepair,” Wivell said. “While all the other figures of the Nativity scene were replaced over the years, the stable, originally made out of tobacco

lath, remained on display each year. Unfortunately, the original stable went missing during the offseason, leaving the Nativity without a stable in 2023.” Maytown is known for keeping traditions alive, she said, so in December 2024, a concerned resident built a new one. “Local Constable Paul Castline took it upon himself to build a replica stable and deliver it before Christmas Day so Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus had shelter before His day of celebration,” Wivell related. “Maytown is also known for residents working together for a good cause, so Ed Jones, father to Tom Jones, state representative, and volunteer caretaker of the Maytown Square, has volunteered to stain and

this will be the second year that the Maytown Civic Association has hosted an event to include a gathering of the community to witness the illumination of the square. “Maytown has a rich history of close family ties and tradition,”Wivell said. “It’s important to go the extra mile to keep the traditions alive for our community today to enjoy what generations before us put into place for their own enjoyment.” A new decoration will be added to the square this year, said Maytown resident Linda Good. Local farmer Doug Witman has created a beautiful 10-foot Christmas light tree, she explained. Wivell and Good hope people will come out for a community celebration to kick off the holiday season. “Special moments, like Christmas caroling in the center square and watching the Nativity and tree being illuminated, can become a treasured memory for young and old alike,” Wivell said. “Maytown is a town rooted in history and tradition and without events like this, our busy lives can take over and cause us to miss opportunities to be still and enjoy the community we live in and enjoy each other.”

protect the stable and store it for safekeeping during the offseason.” Ed is no stranger to square improvements, she noted, adding that he regularly mows the grass, pulls the weeds and keeps the monuments and fencing freshly painted. “He kept the original stable in good repair and had recently upgraded the stable prior to it going missing in 2023,”Wivell said. For many years, members of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809, led by Maytown native Sara Gutshall, oversaw the maintenance of the square. The auxiliary also provides Wreaths Across America, which are displayed each Christmas on the square, and the group purchases annuals each spring for local Boy Scout Troop 53 to plant. This year’s Square Lighting will be a bittersweet one. Gutshall passed away in August at the age of 86. “It is important to note that Gutshall, a passionate supporter of the military and tradition, worked hard to ensure that the Maytown Center Square was registered as a historical site, and it remains as such today,” Wivell said. While the square has been decorated for the holidays for many years,

Mark your calendar for Saturday, Nov. 22, pick up unique handmade items and enjoy tasty homemade food when Ruhl’s Church hosts its ninth annual Manheim Holiday Craft Show. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim. “We have 45 vendors,” said Michelle Eakman, who is coordinating the vendor part of the show and will sell handmade scarves. “We have a lady who embroiders everything from towels to pillows. We have somebody who does wooden items. We’ve got vendors who make ornaments, goat soap, chocolate candies, bread, tumblers, essential oils. I also have some direct-sales people like Pampered Chef, Norwex and Mary Kay.” In addition to shopping, people can enjoy food to eat on-site or take to go. The menu will include chicken corn noodle soup, beef barbecue, hot dogs, desserts and drinks. Proceeds from the craft show will benefit church mission trips. “It benefits local, national and global missions,” said Gail Ruhl, who handles the food for the craft show and organizes the mission trips. “We’re doing two trips this year. One team in June will be going to West Virginia, and the team in July will be going to serve at Kairos House in Guatemala City, Guatemala.” Gail and her husband, Chuck, have planned mission trips for many years. The upcoming missions will be their 31st and 32nd trips they’ve organized, but it will mark the first time the couple has traveled outside of North America. “Our daughters have gone to the Kairos House, and they’ll be coming with us on this trip, so we’re excited about that,” Gail shared, noting that Kairos House was started by the parents of a former congregant. “Kairos House houses people who have to come from very far away to seek medical attention.” As Stephanie Heisey, event volunteer, added, “It’s like a Ronald McDonald House in Guatemala.” Kairos House needs renovation

Heisey will accompany the group to West Virginia. “We’ve gone to that area probably five times,”she said, noting that it’s an economically depressed region. “The church we work out of, homeless people sleep there. Her performances stir memories, laughter and a sense of connection that lingers long after the last note fades. With her easy smile and boundless energy, she’s become part of the fabric of Juniper Village, a familiar face who brightens the week for residents and staff alike. She dresses for the occasion, often coordinating her outfits with the season or an upcoming holiday, and she plays every tune from memory, her fingers moving effortlessly across the keys. “When Sandy’s here, she doesn’t just per form. She engages,” Erb said. “You feel like you’re in the moment, truly living life. It’s almost a spiritual experience.” As her music drifts through the halls and voices join in from every corner, it’s clear that Heisey offers more than entertainment. She brings connection, joy and a gentle reminder of how powerful a simple song can be.

Other times we go to them!” She emphasized that each year’s tour spotlights something unique. “It’s not about having a certain ‘look’ to be on tour,” Dancause remarked. “Everyone who comes to tour decorates differently. That is what this tour is all about - creating a tour that has a little bit of something for everyone to enjoy.” She also invites people to stop by Old Town Hall, 3 W. Walnut St., to pick up a mini house from the Cat’s Meow featuring Shank’s Tavern while supplies last. Proceeds from the tour will benefit Marietta Restoration Associates and will be used for the

upkeep and restoration of historic Marietta buildings. Free parking will be available at Donegal Intermediate S chool, 1177 R iver Road, Marietta, and a shuttle bus will transport tourgoers to each of the homes on the tour as well as a downtown Marietta stop before bringing them back to their car. American culture.” She’ll also feature notecards and small canvas art with similar styles, as well as embellished hats and bags with a southwest vibe. Her art, which she markets under the name “Fearless,” reflects her passion for travel, self-expression and dreams. Young will showcase stylistic home décor and one-of-a-kind pictures made with vintage and costume jewelry as well as other art. “Most of what I’m doing right now is resin pours,” she said of her items, which include homemade charcuterie boards. “I use shells and things from the beach and nature. I also do a lot of vintage jewelry and crushed glass.” Her jewelry creations include pictures made from the pieces. “I have a variety of Christmas trees I’ve made,” she said. “I love Christmas trees, and I do those with different mediums.” Good-Allen was a full-time artist for 25 years. Now retired, she continues to indulge her creative side through her business, Hidden Woman Arts. “I was also out west, and I was very moved by that,” she said, noting that she incorporates natural items such as stone as well as suede and other textures in her art. “I do decoupage. I knit and embroider, and I started a new line of clothing called Kantha Kouture.” This line features products made from old kantha blankets, hand-stitched Indian quilts. She also paints on canvas, wood and concrete,

and she creates unique pieces, including jewelry, purses and macramé. Forry will showcase her curated collection of vintage costume and sterling silver jewelry as well as Posh Posies she creates. “I enjoy living artfully,” she said. “Although I won’t have many things here that I’ve made, I will have vintage pieces from the ‘50s and ‘60s. I like to accessorize my outfits with unique costume and sterling silver jewelry. I feel like little things you add to an outfit can make a difference, bring you joy and start conversations.” The show will display items throughout the first floor of Young’s home, a 120-year-old house full of character. “It’s going to be held in a beautiful, warm home atmosphere with music playing,” Frey said. “It’s going to be a relaxing and fun atmosphere, and you’ll feel that.” All of the artists will be on hand both days to interact with shoppers and answer questions. “You will have time to talk to the artists in an intimate setting,” Forry shared, adding that the show will have something for every taste and budget. “You can expect the unexpected in a good way.” Added Good-Allen, “You’ll see lots of whimsy, things made with items from nature, things you can display around your house and things you can wear. And you’ll find lots of things you can give as gifts.” Parking for the show is available along the north side of High Street, across from the house.
