The crowning ceremony took place prior to the school’s football game against Ephrata High School. Because of COVID-19 limitations, members of the homecoming court did not have a senior escort this year. Instead, they were escorted by their parents or a family member at the game. Also in attendance at the event was Betty Grillo, the 2019 homecoming queen. The event was livestreamed on the Donegal Athletics YouTube channel. Homecoming events held prior to the game included Spirit Week, which featured dress-up themed days. See Homecoming pg 2

distancing,” she explained, noting that the show features a cast of eight. “And it’s a play that doesn’t have a lot of touching or physical interaction between characters.” “The Importance of Being Earnest” is a farcical comedy written by Oscar Wilde. “It’s a show about a bunch of rich people and the frivolity of their
lives,” said Collin Arntz, who plays Algernon Moncrieff. “Algernon and Jack (Worthing, played by Andrew Allen) both have secret lives that they are keeping from their families, but their secrets start to come out.” This is the first time Collin, who is a senior, has performed on stage. He’s been a part of the sound crew

She plans to attend a four-year college, where she hopes to continue her softball career. The second annual Christmas at Kraybill Craft Fair and Celebration will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kraybill Mennonite School (KMS), 598 Kraybill Church Road, Mount Joy. Admission is free. The craft fair will feature 30 local artisans, crafters and vendors, all offering wares including hand-turned wooden
bowls, wood-fired pottery, jewelry, quilts, Christmas decorations, hand-dyed yarn, wooden signs, local honey and children’s books and toys. A KMS benefit table will feature baked goods, handmade quilts and blankets, Christmas decorations, household décor and gift baskets. A special feature being offered this year will be
gingerbread cookie decorating kits available to take home. The kits will include a packaged gingerbread man cookie made by Zig’s Bakery in Lititz along with icing packets and candy decorations. To learn more, readers may search for “Christmas at Kraybill” on Facebook. The event is being planned by the school’s Parent Teacher Fellowship, and proceeds will help to offset operating costs. KMS offers prekindergarten through eighth-grade Christian education designed to prepare children to do God’s work in the world by nurturing the Anabaptist perspectives of faith, peacemaking, leadership and service. He said audiences should not be deterred by the fact the show was first performed in 1895. “It’s really funny, and even though it’s set back in time, it’s still very relevant to today,” Andrew said. “The jokes hold up very well. It was a little hard to work through the dialogue, but once we got it down, everything clicked.” Ashtyn Hess, who plays Lady Bracknell in the production, said audiences can expect a performance that is both visually stunning as well as layered with nuance. “It’s a very beautiful show in and of itself because the costumes are gorgeous,” she said of the Victorian-era garb

In a year when nonprofit organizations experienced significant losses of income opportunities, the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive) hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) is of particular importance. For 24 hours, beginning at 12:00:01 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, individuals may make donations via credit card to participating nonprofits at www.extragive.org. To inspire generous donations, LCCF has solicited sponsors for more than $500,000 in matching funds and other prizes.
“Every year we have a stretch goal. That allows people to ‘give extra,’” explained LCCF communications manager Aaron Spangler. With the assistance of the stretch goal, last year’s ExtraGive raised $10.9 million, for a total of $53.5 million since the event’s inception in 2012. The hope is that the 2020 ExtraGive will do as well or better. Spangler noted that when the shutdown was announced in March, the ExtraGive organizers knew that this year’s event would be different. “We were a little unsure about how everything was going to go,” Spangler

Berks Catholic handed Donegal a 35-14 loss on Friday, November 6, ending their season. But the Indians have plenty to hold their heads up about as they conclude a tumultuous 2020 season. “The effort of the team has been great,” praised head coach Chad Risberg. “Through all of the Covid stuff and injuries, the kids have persevered and fought hard. It says a lot about their character.” The loss at home featured two running touchdowns for the Indians, a six-yard run from Garrett Blake in the second, and a 24-yard conversion from Mason Ober in the final period. Naqvi, Amanda Fry, and Hadley Shoaf earning first team honors, while Sam Rothstein, Logan Fry, and Kendall Finicle were named to the second team. In order to qualify for the honor, athletes need to have run in all meets, and maintain an average place finish in the top eight for first team and top 16 for second team. Strong leadership starts at the top and head coach Philip Koser was recognized for his outstanding work at the helm, named as 2020 Section Two girls Coach of the Year. Coach Koser was quick to pass the recognition on to his team for his achievement. “The girls’ team really takes the credit for the award, and the award really reflects the hard work, dedication and effort the girls put into winning the Section title,” he explained. Balancing athletics with academics, five Donegal seniors were also presented the Senior Scholar award with the accolade going to Naqvi, A. Fry, Rachel Fernald, Overlander, and L. Fry. The academic award is a cumulative acknowledgement based on their high school career in which they must maintain a 3.5 GPA while lettering in a varsity sport as a senior. “At Donegal we emphasize academics with our athletes. They are students before they are athletes,” Koser described. “The five that received the award are tremendous individuals and epitomize our expectations of a student athlete.”
