Zion Lutheran Bazaar Will Feature Creativity BY CATHY MOLITORIS
ion Lutheran Church, 1290 River Road, Marietta, will hold its annual holiday bazaar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6, and Saturday, Nov. 7, in the church fellowship hall. The bazaar will feature a variety of handmade items as well as food. “We will have a lot of different things, and you will see a lot of creativity on display,” said Mary Ann Eshleman, event organizer. Items for sale will include fall and Christmas décor, cross-stich pictures, ornaments, jewelry, decorative mason jars, and more. “We will have a large assortment of crocheted items, including children’s animal-themed hats, hats for adults, stuffed animals, scarves, children’s ponchos, card baskets, dish cloths, catnip mice, pillows, and pumpkins,” Eshleman stated. Handmade wooden items will also be for sale. “Some are made from wooden pallets, and others are made from other types of wood,” she noted.

“We’ll have things like Christmas trees, birdhouses, snowmen, Santas … birds, snowflakes, and sleds.” The bazaar will also feature a white elephant table, she said, adding, “This year, the table is going to be jigsaw puzzles in all different piece counts.” Baked goods and candy will also be for sale, as well as food to go. “We are not going to offer dine-in this year, but we will have cold soup and cold barbecue to go,” Eshleman explained. “We’ll have three soups ham and bean, chicken corn and beef vegetable - and the barbecue will be hamburger or pork.” She said church members look forward to the bazaar every year not only as a fundraiser for the church, but also as a way to support other organizations. “We will use the money this year for our elevator fund to help pay our elevator off, and then we will split the money with the East Donegal/Conoy Christian Food Bank,” she stated. She emphasized that the event will follow COVID-19 protocols.
St. Mark’s Will Offer Free Thanksgiving Meal BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Sixteen years ago, Janet Lehman and her husband found themselves with nowhere to go on Thanksgiving. “Our kids were grown and out of the house and we were alone,” Lehman recalled. “ We thought maybe there are other people in the same boat at Thanksgiving.” So the Lehmans decided to hold a community Thanksgiving dinner at their church, St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in

or Sara Gutshall, the square in Maytown may be small, but it occupies a big space in her heart. “That little square just means the world to me,” said the lifelong Maytown resident. Gutshall, president of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809, took that dedication and turned it into a project to not only beautify the square, but also recognize Maytown’s rich history. Earlier this year, Gutshall spearheaded a fundraiser to replace the crumbling walkways around the square with engraved bricks bearing the names of community members and businesses.

“The walks were more than 100 years old,” she said. “They were all broken up from use, and tree roots had uprooted them. It was just really in poor shape.” She noted the idea for repairing the square came to her in a dream after part of the square was destroyed when a car ran into it. “The accident took down light poles and curbing and more, but it spared the military monuments in the square that could have been destroyed,” she recalled. “I felt

opment as a main transport area for coal mining. The coal mined throughout what’s now known as the Pocono Mountains was transported from Mauch Chunk to Eastern markets via the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals, locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s culture today. The focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought early 19th-century entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. Known as the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s industrial reach even farther and establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and

GEARS To Offer Zumba Gold GEARS will offer Zumba Gold classes on Wednesdays, Nov. 11 to Dec. 16, from 6:15 to 7 p.m. at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. It will be taught by licensed Zumba Gold instructor Judy McMillen. Zumba Gold is a toneddown version of Zumba that is geared to deconditioned people, beginner exercisers,

The bazaar is a great way for congregation members to show off their creative talents, said Eshleman, who is a jewelry maker. “We have so many people in our congregation who are really talented. We’re not a large church, but we have people who enjoy getting together and crafting throughout the year,” she noted. Eshleman said the bazaar is always well attended, with people who are new each year to regulars who come year

AJ’s Surplus Grocery Marks One Year “When the Musser’s (supermarket space) became available, it seemed like a good fit and something the community could embrace,” mused Chris Smiley, founder of AJ’s Surplus Grocery. “I had been a business owner in Columbia for 20 years, and I wanted to provide an opportunity to help the community by providing an inexpensive option for groceries and general merchandise.” With the assistance of Tom Lohr, the owner of Red Lion’s D&K Surplus Grocery and Thomas Trading Inc., a wholesale food provider for surplus grocery stores, Smiley launched AJ’s Surplus Grocery at 960
Lancaster Ave., Columbia, last year. “We feel very blessed to be part of the Columbia community,” Smiley said as the store marked its first anniversary. “We feel like we have been welcomed and made to feel a part of the community even during these difficult times of COVID.” The mission of AJ’s Surplus Grocery is to help community members stretch their dollars through surplus pricing and special deals. The store carries groceries, general merchandise, clothing, and anything else that can be found for a good price. After the store reached about eight months in business, store
Thaddeus Stevens College Receives Award Eight community college career and technical education programs have been named winners of the Excellence and Equity in Community College STEM Award, an initiative led by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program and funded by the Siemens Foundation. Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology was honored for its electrical technology program. These winning programs, which will receive $50,000 each, deliver associate degrees and other credentials in
advanced manufacturing, energy, health care, and information technology. A selection committee of field experts selected the winners for not only providing outstanding career preparation but also for intentionally reaching out to and supporting diverse populations that typically are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers, including students of color, low-income students, and females. As part of the award, the
customers were surveyed to ascertain what they liked and what was missing. Gutshall said bricks are still available for engraving, and she encourages individuals, organizations and businesses to consider purchasing one. “People could honor their loved one, especially veterans, or they could honor people who lived in

Remembering Pauline H. Engle, Co-Founder Of Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc.
Pauline H. Engle, 94, formerly of Mount Joy, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, September 20, 2020, at Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in Maytown, she was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Ada N. (Fridy) Hershey. Pauline was the wife of Alvin S. Engle, who passed away on June 10, 1971. Pauline was a graduate of the former East Donegal Township High School class of 1943. She and her husband, Alvin, co-founded Engle Printing in 1954 and Publishing in 1959. After Alvin’s death, Pauline and her children
drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County. While Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans for further growth. “Even my father … I don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at the high point,” Charlie said. She was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018. Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin along the Susquehanna.

Besides family, relationships with friends were also important, as she entertained and traveled with them often. When asked how he thought his mother would want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis Engle, EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.” Pauline was a member of Mount Calvary Church in Elizabethtown and was active singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school. She also taught Good News Club in her home. Expanding upon his mother’s Christian faith, Charlie reflected, “She would often say, ‘We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’” As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond. Her example was the benchmark from which the Engle children carried on the business, and now the third generation draws from their grandmother’s tenacity and unwavering faith. A memorial service honoring Pauline’s life was held at Mount Calvary Church on October 4, 2020, where the family shared fond memories of their mother, grandmother, and sister.

The senior center, a community service of GEARS, is funded, in part, under an agreement with money allocated by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging and the Lancaster County Office of Aging.

Pauline H. Engle
continued the business in which she was active until her retirement in 2009. Pauline is survived by two sons, Charles Engle, husband of Kathleen of Mount Joy, and Dennis Engle, husband of Lynn of Lititz; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Harry Hershey, husband of Joan of Brethren Village, and John Hershey, husband of Mable of Marietta. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Rutt, and two brothers, Robert and Charles Hershey. When Alvin and Pauline founded Engle Printing, it was undoubtedly a partnership. Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and day-to-day employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been

Program To Honor Veterans, Dedicate Bricks The Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., will hold a special event on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m. to honor Marietta veterans and to dedicate additional bricks sponsored via the Buy-a-Brick program. The community is invited, especially veterans and their families. There will be a short ceremony featuring local speakers, including members of Marietta American Legion Post 466. This year’s service will highlight the Legion’s program to honor hometown heroes with banners throughout
the town. Approximately 150 banners have already been displayed. The ceremony will also remember local veterans who have served their country, as well as Lt. Benjamin Hiestand, in whose honor the Marietta Community House was formed. Hiestand died while serving during World War I. The ceremony will be conducted in the site’s gym/studio, with social distancing and masks required. A blessing of the bricks will then be offered outside by the brick walk of remembrance. Many of the bricks
have been given in memory of loved ones, in honor of living loved ones, or by local businesses. More than 170 individuals and businesses have donated to the brick walk. Money from the sponsorship of bricks has been used to repair and replace the brick porches of the Community House building and to match grants for other projects. More than 70 local businesses, crafters, vendors, and food sellers will come together to show their support for homeless pets at the eighth annual Holiday Shopping Fair and Pet Food Donation Drive on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will be held in the space that previously housed the Bon-Ton department store at Park City Center, 142 Park City Center, Lancaster. This is a new venue for the Holiday Shopping Fair, as coronavirus mitigation guidelines necessitated finding a larger space. Booths will be spread throughout the store in order to promote social distancing. Additional precautions will be taken to encourage safety for everyone involved. Face coverings will be required, social distancing will be maintained, and hand sanitizer stations will be
located at the entrances and throughout the space. Volunteers will count shoppers to maintain occupancy limits and will check the temperatures of everyone entering the room. The first 100 adult attendees will receive free goodie bags filled with special offers, coupons, and samples. There will be opportunities to enter prize drawings; attendees may collect their vendor passport game cards at the information desk. You can see how it’s grown.” This year’s free Thanksgiving Day dinner will be held on Thursday, Nov. 26, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, 27 E. Main St., Mount Joy. Because of the pandemic, the meal will only be available to go, with curbside pickup behind the church. Some meals will be delivered to the

Indians Deal Ephrata 2-1 OT Loss in Season Finale

committee realized they needed a different plan for the bazaar. Rather than hold the bazaar in person, they thought to host it online. When it was not feasible for vendors to participate, the bazaar came full circle, with church members once again providing the entire inventory for what has been dubbed the Bizarre Bazaar. The event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to noon. Salem members have donated about 45 themed baskets for the bazaar. “They’re unbelievable,� Shipe said. “Most of the baskets are worth close to $100. They have everything under the sun: for kids, for adults, wine, Mickey Mouse, (and) Hershey Spa with a $100 gift certificate.� “I was really impressed,� added church council
