Inspiration struck Lynn McCleary when she was on vacation in 2006. “I took my dogs to a dog park. … They took off running, and I could see how happy they were,” she recalled. “I said, ‘We need one of these at home.’” Fast forward 10 years and thanks
to McCleary and a committee of volunteers, Dog Park Mount Joy opened on Nov. 1, 2016. The journey from idea to fruition was a difficult one, she noted. Obstacles included finding the right location, getting township permission and coming up with the $220,000 needed to create and open the park. See Dog Park pg 5

Reaching Students In Christian Love BY CATHY MOLITORIS
on’t tell Cristina Paden that she can’t do something. No matter the obstacles coming her way, the executive director of Rainbow ’s End Youth Services (REYS) will find a way to make a difference in the lives of students in the Mount Joy area. “This past year has felt like shifting sand,” she said of trying to navigate ever-changing COVID regulations, facing staffing issues and just trying to get her bearings in the role she assumed just over a year ago. “I don’t think I can say I’ve had a ‘normal’ month yet.” But despite these challenges, Paden said there’s no place she’d rather be. “I love working with the students,” she commented, noting that her background includes serving as a campus minister as well as a volunteer youth ministry director for her church. “I love mentoring them and teaching them. My desire is to see them flourish, and I love building relationships.” REYS, located at 105 Fairview St., Mount Joy, serves students in grades one through 12, providing free after-school programs with a

I want to pass that along to others.” As a nonprofit, REYS depends on community support to keep its doors open. The organization will participate in the Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 19, and has set a fundraising goal of $100,000 for the 24-hour event. “Money raised by the Extraordinary Give is used to fund student programs for the following year,” Paden explained. It’s also used to fund a backpack giveaway REYS holds each fall as well as general operating expenses. In a typical year, REYS holds a fundraising banquet, but that was replaced this year with the REYS Summer Challenge. “We met and exceeded our goal for that,” Paden noted. “There is so much support in the community for what we do. The buy-in is truly genuine. I don’t have to twist somebody’s arm or sell them on REYS. They believe what we’re doing here is important work.” For more information on REYS, visit https://reys.org.

Last year, more than 600 people enjoyed a free, homecooked Thanksgiving meal courtesy of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Mount Joy. This year, the church plans to continue the tradition and will offer its 17th annual community Thanksgiving Day dinner on Thursday, Nov. 25.

Christian focus. “Students in our community need a safe space where they can come for love, friendship and community,” Paden remarked. “When they come to REYS, they receive that support.” On a typical day, REYS staff members serve snacks or a meal to the students, offer recreational opportunities, provide academic assistance and teach life lessons. One-on-one piano lessons and martial arts lessons are also offered, as well as field trips to places including Hersheypark. REYS serves about 100 students a week, who come from Mount Joy and surrounding areas. “Donegal School District partners with us to provide transportation, but we also have students who are homeschooled or who attend schools in other districts,” Paden noted. “We have an open-door policy. Anyone in grades one through 12 can come as long as a parent or guardian has signed a permission slip.” When Paden came to REYS in July of 2020, she knew she had found her new home. “This job is important to me because I was in the shoes of the kids who come

Keeping Their Love Of Trains On Track

On the second floor of the Columbia Historic Preservation Society, you can find a bunch of kids indulging in their passion. But these aren’t your typical kids - most are in their 60s and 70s. “ We’re really kids who never grew up,” explained Chris Cohan, one of the younger members of the Columbia and Susquehanna Model Railroad. “We just love trains.”
The group shares its enthusiasm for HO-scale model trains on the fourth Sunday of the month from May through October. Beginning Thanksgiving weekend, the display runs on Saturdays and Sundays through the first weekend after the new year. “ We do this because we love it, and we do it for the kids,” said member Rick Christopher. “And, we do it for the kids who are maybe just a little bit older than

you’d expect.” The 2,200-square-foot layout features a section depicting Columbia’s riverfront in the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s, created by member Tony Segro. “Tony scratch-built every one of these buildings,” said Cohan, noting that two in the layout still stand in Columbia today. Segro started on the layout in 2000, working on and off over the next 16 years to complete it. “I used photos from the

historical society to make it as accurate as I could,” he stated. “They had a lot of information I could use.” The layout also includes scenes created by the imagination of the club members. For Walter Bosch, who came to check out the display on a recent Sunday and was joined by a crowd of other visitors, the trains offer a chance to indulge in nostalgia. “I love watching them,” he said. Christopher noted that
when he joined the club about four years ago, it brought him right back to his childhood. “I’ve loved trains since I was a little kid,” he said, echoing the sentiment of most of the members in the club. “When I started here, my love of HO trains just came flooding back to me.” “HO,” as Christopher explained, is the type of scale used for the model trains. The trains are 187th the size of their real counterparts,

Membership in the club is open to anyone who loves trains. “We have no official officers, no dues, no membership fees,” said Christopher. “We’re just a bunch of guys who love trains and love to get together. Our only rule is you have to get along with everybody.” The display is constantly evolving as new members join and add to it, so even if you’ve seen it once, you’ll see something new the next time you visit, Cohan said. And the members of the club are on hand each weekend to answer questions or point out unique features of the display. “If you’ve ever enjoyed watching trains, you’ll love this,” Christopher said. The Columbia and Susquehanna Model Railroad will run from 1 to 4 p.m. at 21 N. Second St., Columbia, on Saturdays and Sundays from Nov. 27 through Jan. 9 (except for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day). Admission is free. “Due to the overwhelming number of dinner requests in 2020, Jim and Joanne Pinkerton of The Gathering Place have very generously offered St. Mark’s church the use of The Gathering Place facilities to prepare, cook and distribute (the dinner),” said Janet Lehman, who helps to organize the meal. Dinners will be available by curbside pickup only at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy, between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Lehman emphasized that although the location is different for the meal this year, it’s still being prepared, cooked and served by St. Mark’s church and community volunteers. In fact, she said more than 70 volunteers helped with the dinner last year. The dinner will include turkey breast over stuffing with gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, mixed vegetables, rolls and butter, applesauce and a dessert. Although there is no cost for the dinner, donations will be accepted. “St. Mark’s goal is to provide a Thanksgiving meal for everyone in the community who is looking for a delicious homecooked Thanksgiving dinner,” Lehman stated. “So, whether you are going through a difficult time, you have no family in the area, or you prefer not to go to a restaurant during
the pandemic, St. Mark’s family invites you to enjoy their mouth-watering turkey dinner.” Lehman noted that in order to cook and serve the meals, many volunteers are needed both Wednesday evening, Nov. 24, and on Thanksgiving Day. “Volunteers are needed to donate lots of cakes and pies, peel potatoes, make the stuffing, cook the dinner, put the food in takeout containers, serve the dinners curbside, clean up following the dinner and wash dishes,” she explained. Anyone interested in volunteering may contact Lehman at 717-653-4189 or email lehmanfamily@comcast.net. Members of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church believe they are called to touch lives and meet the needs of people in their community, Lehman said, and the church’s food ministry helps to fulfill that goal. In addition to the free Thanksgiving meal, St. Mark’s and Mary Mother of the Church volunteers serve free meals the third Sunday of most months. Meals are served by curbside pickup from 4 to 5 p.m. at the rear of St. Mark’s, located at 27 E. Main St., Mount Joy. Reservations are required for the Thanksgiving Day dinner and may be made by calling the church office at 717-653-5493, ext. 222. The reservation deadline is Monday, Nov. 22.
Outdoor Fall Activities Planned Governor Dick Environmental Center, 3283 Pinch Road, Mount Gretna, will offer fall events. Writeface, a nonprofit organization that provides free writing and journaling workshops for veterans and their families, will host a spoken word festival, along with music, on Veterans Day, Thursday, Nov. 11. The program, “Veterans, Values, & Voices: Words in Search of Our Missing Peace,” will be held in partnership with Music for Everyone at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, in Steinman Hall from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The festival will feature poetry, storytelling, music, and more - all written by veterans. Writeface’s process helps
veterans who are having difficulty readjusting to explore their own feelings and helps them communicate more effectively to family, friends, and coworkers. Writeface strives to change the statistics for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Anyone interested in learning about the organization’s programs is encouraged to attend. Royer’s To Collect Holiday Cards, Coloring Pages Royer’s Flowers & Gifts is collecting holiday cards and coloring pages for service members and veterans throughout November in each of its stores. Holiday Bazaar Will Return To Ironville UMC

Located in Rapho Township Community Park, Dog Park Mount Joy features a one-acre section dedicated to dogs under 35 pounds and a two-acre area for bigger dogs. Benches and walkways are found throughout the park, which is accessible by a gate activated by a membership card. Having a membership-only dog park helps visitors feel invested in keeping the park clean and well maintained, McCleary said, noting, “They feel like they own a piece of the park.” The park is open to anyone who pays the annual membership fee, completes an application and provides a liability waiver and shot records for the dog. Discounts are offered for more than one dog. “We have about 600 families who are members, and some of them have multiple dogs,” McCleary noted. “We have people from all over Lancaster County.” Members even come from out of state, including South Carolina, Wisconsin and Florida, when they are in town with their dogs to visit friends and family. Dog Park Mount Joy is a nonprofit organization, and a committee of about 20 people has been instrumental in opening the park and keeping it open for five years, McCleary stated. The team of volunteers emphasized that all funding for Dog Park Mount Joy came from fundraising plus a matching grant from DCNR. “No taxpayer dollars were used to build this,” McCleary stated. She said that although the park charges an annual membership fee, it’s only to cover operating costs. “We’re not looking to make money on this,” she remarked. “We are looking to have a place for our dogs to run and have fun.” Ellie Garner brings her dogs, Molly and Perry. She lost her husband, Gene, this year, and the park is a place she can come for peace and fellowship.
“Molly is blind now, so she mostly sits on my lap, and Perry just loves to be with the other dogs,” Garner said. Lani Coelho said her dogs, Bo and Rocco, enjoy seeing their furry friends. “The dogs find their own little group of dogs, and they all hang out, while their owners get to talk with each other,” she said. “It’s a social outlet for both people and their dogs.” Although she’s been instrumental in fundraising for the park, Gail Fridy is among the few members who do not have a dog. Still, she said coming to the park brings her joy, and she credits the community with the park’s success. “We have thousands of followers on Facebook, in addition to our members,” she said. “The community support for this has just been incredible.” Dog Park Mount Joy will be participating in the Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 19, and new members are always encouraged to join, McCleary emphasized. The last time Ironville United Methodist Church (UMC) hosted its annual holiday bazaar was November of 2019. Now that businesses have reopened and a sense of normalcy is slowly returning, Ellie Shirk, head of the holiday bazaar, noted she is looking forward to the upcoming event. The annual holiday bazaar hosted by the members of Ironville UMC, 4020 Holly Drive, Columbia, will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6. In addition to gently used items available for purchase, food, vendors, and a white elephant room will be part of the event. There will be an assortment of baked goods, along with hamburger barbecue, ham and cheese sandwiches on pretzel rolls, hot dogs with or without sauerkraut, chips, soft pretzels, and beverages. All of the food, baked goods, and beverages available for purchase at the bazaar will be donated from church members. Participating vendors will sell handmade jewelry, aprons, crocheted items, and more. Shirk mentioned that she is happy Salem United Church of Christ (UCC) of Rohrerstown will host its holiday bazaar on the same day because people can go from one bazaar to the next. Women’s Club To Hold Virtual Bingo

When the Women’s Club of Manheim hosts bingo on Sunday, Nov. 7, it will have a definite 2021 spin. “We’re doing a virtual bingo,” said Shayna Sharp. “People will be able to access cards to play online through their computer or tablet or phone, or they can print them out and play at home. Then they can listen to the game through Zoom.” The event will begin at 1 p.m. and will feature a mix of prizes. “It’s designer purses, including Michael Kors, Coach and Kate Spade, as well as themed baskets,” Sharp noted. Themes will include Family Fun, Baby, Date Night, Christmas, Sweet Treats, Coffee Lovers and more. Giveaway drawings will also be held, featuring tickets to local attractions, including the Turkey Hill Experience, Lake Tobias Wildlife Park and Painting With a Twist, as well as other gift certificates and gift items. Numerous local businesses and organizations have sponsored games or donated prizes for the event, including Doe Run Furniture, Heistand Automotive, Baron Insurance Group and

This will be the second time the Women’s Club of Manheim has held a virtual bingo, and the first event was very successful, Sharp said, noting that more than 100 people participated. “People were hesitant with it being virtual. They were a little unsure of how it was going to work,” she recalled. “I tell people, ‘Don’t be afraid to do a virtual event.’ It went really smoothly.” An added benefit of the virtual setup was the opportunity to extend the reach of Women’s Club supporters, she noted, adding that people from other states, including North Carolina, New York and New Jersey, played with local family and friends. Small groups of friends can also get together to play even though the event is virtual, she suggested. “It’s a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon supporting the community,” she stated. “We had several small groups who got together last time and people said how much they enjoyed it.” Proceeds from the bingo will benefit local individuals and organizations. “One hundred percent of any of our fundrais-

ers and their children as well as activities at Pleasant View Retirement Community. The club is hoping to hold an in-person bingo next spring. Senior Center Will Host Breakfast And Bazaar BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Set your alarm, get up early and come hungry to the Elizabethtown Area Senior Center on Saturday, Nov. 13. The center, located in the GEARS Community Center at 70 S. Poplar St., will hold its annual bazaar, beginning with an allyou-can-eat breakfast sponsored by the Conoy Lions Club, served from 7 to 11 a.m. Breakfast will include pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, coffee and juice and will be available for either dine-in or takeout. The bazaar will run until 1 p.m. and will feature a wide variety of items, said Joyce Hardman, senior center director. “The bazaar includes clothing, handmade items, a bake sale, books, craft vendors and home-based business vendors,” she noted. Items are donated by seniors, friends of the center, community members and local businesses.
More than 100 prizes will be offered in a giveaway drawing at the bazaar, including gift cards, children’s items, fall and holiday decor, snacks, tools and more. Winners will be drawn at 1 p.m., and they do not need to be present to win. “Something new this year will be ‘Lucky Mail,’” Hardman stated. “You can purchase decorated envelopes that will have free (giveaway drawing) tickets, pick a prize, pick a snack item and (more).” The kitchen will also be open to serve lunch items after the breakfast. Proceeds from the bazaar benefit the senior center programs, activities and operational costs. “The senior center is an activity center for area residents over 60 years old,” Hardman stated. “ We are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.” The center serves a continental breakfast on Mondays and Fridays as well as lunch on

Donegal Escapes Gettysburg in Double OT

Tuesday, October 26th the Indians outlasted the Gettysburg Warriors 1-0 in a double overtime showdown in the opening round of the PIAA District III 3A playoffs. Donegal’s Joe Turbedsky, assisted by Dylan Wakefield, netted the golden goal in the second sudden victory extension, promoting the Indians to the quarterfinal round on October 28th. “We possessed the ball a lot better and that is something we worked on all week,” reflected head coach Andy Wagner. “This made a huge difference in that we did not defend as much. We were very comfortable in the game and spent a lot of time in the other team’s half.” Entering as the six seed, the Tribe was favored in the contest that was originally slated for Monday the 25th, but inclement weather put a halt on the game after just 20 minutes of scoreless action and extended the suspense another day. Tuesday, the conditions were hardly improved, but the cool, rainy evening lacked lightning which allowed the contest to resume with 20 minutes remaining in the first half clock. “The turf was really fast, and
we played more side-to-side-we expanded the field,” described Wagner. “Our fitness was good, and I can see the confidence is growing. We countered well and put balls in better places.” Donegal keeper Caden Mullen came up big in the triumph. A diving save already recorded in the first night of limited play denied the Warriors a potential go-ahead goal. He went on to flawlessly preserve the shutout. “Caden Mullen stepped up and did a great job,” commended Wagner. “He has really improved his game and seeing the big picture better. It is nice to see him play out of the back as opposed to punting each possession,” he went on to say of the junior. The victory propelled Donegal into the quarterfinal round opposite third seeded Susquehannock who previously ousted Daniel Boone in a penalty kick faceoff in their opening round match. “The boys were very poised and confident. I thought collectively we played very well,” summarized Wagner. FIELD HOCKEY On Wednesday, October 27th the Lady Indians took on seventh seeded Garden Spot (13-5) in the District III 2A playoffs and came up just short in a 1-0 loss in overtime.
Despite playing without lead scorer Emma Miller, the squad rallied in hopes of an upset to earn their way into quarterfinals, but with just over three minutes left in the extension, Garden Spot was able to slip in the winning, and only, goal of the contest. Donegal keeper, CC Emswiler, snagged eight saves in the loss. “CC was exceptional in the goal,” credited coach Gina Allessie. “So proud of the team. They played their hearts out. They left their hearts and souls on the field and at the end of the day that is what you want from your team. They had an amazing season.” The loss leaves them with a 10-8-1 final record, including an appearance in the semifinals of the L-L Tournament when they were ousted 1-0 by Manheim Township, and a regular season league showing of 7-3. FOOTBALL Donegal football moved to a 2-1 mark in league competition after the Lebanon Cedars were forced to forfeit an October 22nd matchup due to COVID interruptions. With the end of season rapidly approaching, the Indians hope to capitalize while hosting Garden Spot on November 5th for their final regular season clash.

Local crafts will take the spotlight when the Winters Heritage House Museum hosts its annual Heritage Craft Show. The show will be held throughout the museum’s four historic buildings located at 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown, from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 12, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13. “We feature local craftsmen and handmade items,” said Maryann Swartz, museum manager. “We have lots of returning craftspeople this year, along with some new ones. We have some sewers who will be back with their goods. Our blacksmith will be back, and he’s always a favorite.” New this year will be an additional woodcraft artist and a fine artist. Additional crafts will include pottery, jewelry, knitting, wreaths, poured soaps, doll furniture and clothes, games and toys, felted wool and scherenschnitte. Admission to the craft show is by cash donation or a nonperishable food item. Cash and food donations will benefit the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, with the exception of what’s sold in the “100% room.”
That room, Swartz explained, will feature items made in-house by various committees, including a quilting group and a textile committee, and all proceeds will benefit the museum. “We also call that room the ‘Heritage House room,’ and we use the money from anything we sell from that room to help offset costs of our educational programs,” she noted. The Winters Heritage House Museum offers a variety of programming throughout the year, including workshops for children and adults. The organization also hosts community groups such as local Girl Scout troops, which meet on the premises, and leads an annual walking tour for third-grade students, which is tentatively set to return this spring. Swartz estimated that the museum has held an annual craft show for at least 30 years. “We do it to help support the community and food bank and also to give local craftspeople a platform to showcase their work,” she remarked. “We like to recognize local crafters.” For more information on the Heritage Craft Show, visit www. elizabethtownhistory.org.

Second St., Harrisburg, at 4 p.m. This year’s Candlelight Christmas concerts will bring back the traditions of audience sing-alongs of familiar carols and closing moments featuring candlelight and “Silent Night.” Attendees will hear selections from past concerts - “The Work of Christmas,” “This Christmastide,” and the spirituals “Rise Up, Shepherd, and Follow” and “Go Where I Send Thee” - all of which have been included on the chorale’s new 40th anniversary double CD, “Legacy.” The chorale’s May concerts will be “A Celebration in Song!” They will be filled with sacred and secular music from throughout the chorale’s four decades, including Schubert’s “Holy, Holy, Holy”; Bruckner’s “Locus Iste”; Philip Stopford’s
“Do Not Be Afraid”; two classic early American folk hymns, “Down to the River to Pray” and “No Time”; and “Java Jive,” made famous by Manhattan Transfer. The concerts will end with Rollo Dilworth’s “Shine the Heavenly Light” and a special performance of “Shenandoah” with chorale alumni. Performances will be held on Friday, May 13, 2022, at 8 p.m. at the Derry Presbyterian Church in Hershey and on Sunday, May 15, at 4 p.m. at the Messiah University’s High Center. Audience members are invited to a reception following each of the Christmas and spring concerts. The Susquehanna Chorale will continue to livestream concerts to reach listeners unable to attend in person. It’s important to funnel that back into the community, to people who can help the audience explore the piece in a safe setting,” Patterson noted. “For me, this exists solely as a work of art, but the responsibility on my end after participating in the art is to put it into the hands of people who are experts in the field.” Patterson said a staged reading gives the actors a different experience than they’d get in a fully formed production. “The big difference is the actors don’t have to contend with the off-book deadline,” he remarked. “Doing a staged reading requires a different skill set. You have to be able to hold your place and keep the other actor’s attention and the audience’s attention.” He added that he will dedicate “Blackbird” to his directing mentors, Don A. and Bob C., and that he hopes to direct again soon. “I like the craft of working in the theater,” he said, noting that he is usually on stage as an actor. “I’m excited about the idea of being able to expand my skill set.” “Blackbird” has won several awards since it debuted in 2005 and earned multiple Tony nominations as a revival in 2016. A 2016 film titled “Una” was based on the play and received critical praise. Susquehanna Stage will present “Blackbird” as the last show in its series of staged readings called The Undercurrent.
