he Maytown Historical Society Museum, located at 4 W. Main St., Maytown, is open for visitors’ perusal. The museum’s newest exhibit, “Old Home Week - 1910,� features pictures, documents, and many artifacts from Maytown’s first historical celebration. In 1910, Maytown was 150 years old and the town decided it was time for a celebration, which was dubbed Old Home Week. A town committee was formed to plan the event. Many of the celebration’s activities were

Churches Elizabethtown Area (UCEA) secured the Washington Street property, now known as Community Place on Washington (CPOW). The property formerly was a private school associated with St. Peter Catholic Church. On Sept. 11, ground was broken to expand that building to house a larger Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) compliant winter shelter and enrichment services, including job skills training, career and financial counseling, and a computer lab. Currently, ECHOS, the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, the Clothing Barn, Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC), and the Elizabethtown Area HUB are housed at CPOW. Doug Lamb, UCEA chaplain, said that the organization purchased the original property with a plan to expand. “We knew that all the programs and services we wanted to provide would not fit in the existing buildings,” he said, adding that UCEA was drawn to the property by the open baseball field and playground areas that were part of the campus. The number of clients who are served by the center has grown significantly since CPOW opened. Lamb reported that the food pantry had seen a large increase in clients, serving as many as 165 families per month. Jones noted that need for the winter shelter increased by 20% last year, when the organization served more than 70 individuals. In ECHOS’ past fiscal year, 800 individuals were helped. The organizations hope to have the larger winter shelter ready by January 2021. ECHOS administers a number of programs in addition to overseeing the winter shelter, but its duties will expand when the addition is completed. UCEA will have charge of the common areas of the building. “(UCEA) will be overseeing the reception area and training room,” reported Lamb. The rest will allow ECHOS to provide more services for area families. “It will expand our ECHOS offices and provide for enrichment services,” said Jones, noting that the focus will be on services related to education and providing avenues to seek jobs. Specifically, a computer lab with free online training will be on-site. “We have partnered with PA

CareerLink for certification courses, and there will be a bilingual career navigator,” reported Jones. Budgeting workshops, community education workshops, and a mentoring program are also planned. “We will be able to meet physical needs by connecting people to other agencies that provide short-term services,” said Jones. “This is all about moving a family forward through their crisis from surviving to thriving.” Jones added that expanding the winter shelter will be a key to helping families move forward successfully. “We know individuals who are at risk who cannot stabilize in their homes,” she said. “We provide a winter shelter and a dedicated staff member to work with families to navigate them through the system to get them the resources and support that they need and to be housed,” she said.

Achieving a three-peat, Donegal girls cross country captured the LL Section Two Title last Tuesday for the third consecutive year. The title came down to their final regular season meet on October 13, in which the Indians topped both the section runner up, Lampeter-Strasburg, and host ELCO. Both the Pioneers and Donegal entered the meet undefeated thus
far in the 2020 season, but only Donegal maintained that status finishing the regular season 11-0. In a fitting outcome, Donegal swept the top three place finishes led by meet winner Myra Naqvi. Naqvi crossed the line in 20:47, her fourth meet win of the season, and was swiftly joined at the finish by fellow Indian harriers Hadley Shoaf (21:16) and Amanda Fry (21:23). “Myra, Hadley, and Amanda all ran well again,” Koser praised. “Rachel Fernald had a great race
even though she is bothered by injury, and it was exciting to have Emma Myers back after missing the last three meets.” Fernald crossed in sixth with a time of 22:12, and Myers’ time of 22:48 claimed ninth place. “The girls were glad that they have had great success this year and over the last three years,” head coach Philip Koser affirmed. For the athletes that have been on the team for each of those three seasons, that success includes carrying a career record of 42-1, not having lost a meet since September 2017, Koser pointed out. In the boys’ race, the Lampeter-Strasburg Pioneers edged ahead to claim the meet and title, but the Donegal boys had plenty to celebrate as well, concluding their regular season 10-1. Donegal’s pacesetter, Brock Overlander, cruised across the line in 16:55 to claim second
place, Hunter Gehman (17:37) took sixth, and Sam Rothstein (18:01) claimed tenth. “Brock ran extremely well and ran under 17 minutes for the first time this year,” celebrated Koser. Overlander’s time was also a Donegal record on the ELCO course, three seconds faster than the previous best time for the course. BOYS’ SOCCER Making the most of their one opportunity on the field last week, the boys’ soccer team blanked Solanco, 6-0, at home on Tuesday. Indians center back, Silas Mumper, scored the first goal after a mere two minutes of play, but then the game continued with no further change to the scoreboard before the halftime break. “We scored two minutes into the game and this was good to see. However, we were not very effective after that in the first half,” pointed out head coach Andy Wagner. It was in the second half that the Indians surged ahead led by two goals and two assists from Joseph Turbedsky. “We did the same thing starting the second half, we scored within the first two minutes and continued to press after that-this was the difference from the first half to the second,” Wagner pointed out crediting his

The business was founded as Gardner’s Bedrooms in 1990 by Jim Gardner, who sold it to Ben McClure and Jeff Giagnocavo when he retired in 2010.
