Fundraiser Will Support Marietta Center For The Arts By Chelsea Peifer

Big things are on the horizon for the Susquehanna Stage Company (SSC) as it anticipates moving into a new space in 2019. SSC board member Julia Howey said that the theater group acquired a building at 133 W. Market St., Marietta, that was formerly a church and will now be designated as the Marietta Center for the Arts. The goal is to have part of the space renovated and ready for an SSC production in February 2019. To help launch the new

space, SSC will host “The Susquehanna Seasonal: Light the Stage” for the community on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 6 to 9 p.m. at its new building. The fundraising event will feature a dinner catered by a local barbecue business and desserts created by local chef Tarik Boughelam. Attendees will have the opportunity to bid on items in silent and live auctions, such as a charter flight, beverage tastings, fine jewelry, a bicycle, a one-hour professional photography session with an awardwinning photographer, tickets to sporting events, and more.

Donegal To Host Veterans Day Program By Chelsea Peifer

On Monday, Nov. 12, area veterans are invited to attend the annual Veterans Day program at Donegal High School (DHS), 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. Owners and drivers of vehicles made or powered by General Motors (GM) are invited to polish up the paint and shine up the chrome in preparation for the American Legends People’s Choice Fun Show that will be held on Sunday, Oct. 21. For the event, the Lancaster County Corvette Club (LCCC) will take over all available space at Faulkner Chevrolet, 2000 Bennett Ave. (Route 30 and Rohrerstown Road), Lancaster. “We had 306 cars registered last year,” reported LCCC governor Clyde Mooney of East Hempfield Township. “There was not much we could do in regards to layout.” “We used every square inch,” added LCCC member Craig Foreman of Landisville. To accommodate the expected turnout at this year’s show, the service lot has been assigned as overflow, and Mooney said club members will park their vehicles there so guests may park in the primary lot. Additionally, LCCC members will empty the showroom, which will be the site of the “ladies’ oasis” and a display of door prizes and silent auction items. The oasis will feature massages by students at the Mount Joy

VisionCorps Receives Grant VisionCorps Foundation has received a $20,000 grant from the Lancaster County Community Foundation and the Ada F. Harr Fund to support adult rehabilitation services. The Ada F. Harr fund provides for home health/custodial care for people impacted by illness or disability. Grant funds will be used to

LCCC member Susanna Mooney, who is married to Clyde, related that the vendors typically include a makeup supplier and other vendors of home and beauty products. The show will be held rain or shine. Clyde expressed his hope that if it rains, folks will still come out to participate in the silent auction and door prize drawing. The proceeds from the auction will help the LCCC with its support of Clare House of Lancaster and the LCCC Christmas Angels program. The club will also contribute to the Chip Miller Amyloidosis Foundation (CMAF). Miller was the cofounder of Carlisle Events, which hosts Corvettes at Carlisle; he died from amyloidosis in 2004. The LCCC regularly sells tickets for a drawing for a new Corvette at the Carlisle fete, typically resulting in about $50,000 for the CMAF earmarked for donation and research purposes. Additional funds go to Clare House, which serves homeless women and children and helps them to achieve self-sufficiency. On Oct. 21, exhibitors may register between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. The show will run from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Atten-

Then they would let it in pots and have to scoop the top off when they used it, because it was that dirty,” explained Johnston. He mentioned that in some areas the water would be teeming with insects to the point that the water did not stop moving. “That was my introduction to how desperately (the people of West Africa) needed clean water and why they get sick,” Johnston said. With such a high percentage of illness being waterborne, he noted that giving people access to clean water gives them a much better chance of survival and health. After the need was presented to and approved by the board, FIA started drilling wells in the

Ivory Coast before transitioning to Ghana. Work began in Burkina Faso in 2006, where FIA continues to serve. According to Johnston, many people in West Africa often feel no need to hear about another belief system until they see FIA volunteers drilling water they desperately need free of charge. This causes people to pause and opens the door for conversation. “The water is so vital to their livelihood that when you offer something like that to them they want to know, ‘Why do you care?’” Johnston relayed. “Our objective is to come in and demonstrate God’s love through the gift of water. We want people to know we’re drilling these wells in the name of Jesus.” Well drilling in West Africa is one of the more than 10 construction projects currently underway by FIA in areas of limited infrastructure in six nations. The community is invited to learn more

about the work of FIA at the organization’s 2018 Missions Banquet on Friday, Nov. 2, at the Red Lion Hotel, 4751 Lindle Road, Harrisburg. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and a buffet dinner featuring beef tips, lemon herb chicken, assorted desserts, and more will be served at 6:20 p.m. Guests will hear from keynote speaker Matt Durkee, an FIA field leader for well drilling in West Africa. Other stories from folks working on a water project in Vanuatu will be shared, along with firsthand accounts from the Messiah College student engineering team that is helping with a bridge building project in Nicaragua. A performance art exhibition, a selfie station, prizes and giveaways, skits, games, and indigenous artifacts from Bolivia, Moldova, and Papua New Guinea will also be part of the event. Community Hospital, welcomed walkers during the opening ceremonies and introduced the Heinaman family of West Hempfield Township. Ryan and Nicole Heinaman shared the story of their 6-year-old son’s heart defect diagnosis. Ryan and Nicole expected to receive great news about their healthy baby boy during their 20week ultrasound. When doctors discovered that the baby had a two-vessel cord, they suggested that the Heinamans get more frequent ultrasounds. During an ultrasound at seven months, doctors detected something wrong with their baby’s heart and referred them for additional testing by a pediatric cardiologist. The results were inconclusive, but doctors wanted to follow up after the baby was born. Tyler Heinaman was born in June 2012 and seemed to be healthy and normal. The Heinamans followed up with the pediatric cardiologist two weeks later for testing. This time, doctors could see what was wrong with Tyler’s heart. Tyler was born with a condition called coarctation of the aorta, a narrowing of the blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. His heart defect was severe, and he needed surgery to correct it right away. He was flown to Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del., where he received surgery five days later. Tyler will still need to be monitored by cardiologists to ensure that the surgical repairs adapt to his growing heart and body, but today he can live a normal life with no restrictions. At the Heart Walk, Tyler and his family led the walkers out of the stadium to kick off the walk. Walkers returned to the stadium to learn the winners of second annual bicycle giveaway drawing sponsored by UPMC

Pinnacle, featuring 12 bikes donated by the hospital’s physicians, staff and teams. The walk was preceded by a high-energy warmup led by Wayne Mutata. Dollars raised will support heart disease and stroke research, health care quality improvement, advocacy, prevention and education. More than 1,500 walkers turned out for the 2018 Lancaster Heart Walk at the Barnstormers’ home stadium in downtown Lancaster on Sept. 15. Participants raised a total of $248,000 for the American Heart Association, a voluntary organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The fundraising total is expected to climb as additional donations are accepted until November. Barr was born in Lancaster and

raised in Elizabethtown. He graduated from Elizabethtown High School in 1965. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Elizabethtown College in 1969 and a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from Millersville University in 1972. He served in the Army and did a seven-month tour in Vietnam with the 935th Medical Detachment - 24th Evacuation Hospital in Long Binh.

DHS principal John Felix said that the school has held a Veterans Day program since he began working in the Donegal School District in 1979. By the 1990s, the program had been reduced to a brief talk on the school announcements. After the attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, occurred, teacher Pat Enos spoke with Felix about the need to restore the Veterans Day program to its original allschool assembly format. “We brought it back in 2001 to review the purpose behind Veterans Day with the kids,” recalled Felix. “It’s a lesson for the entire school about what Veterans Day is and why we honor America’s veterans.” The program will conclude at 11 a.m. Felix noted that time is chosen because of the significance of the number 11: Veterans Day is celebrated on Nov. 11 in honor of the anniversary of the signing of the armistice between the allies of World War I and Germany in 1918, which took effect at 11 a.m. When Veterans Day falls on a Sunday as it does this year, Felix said it is recommended that Veterans Day services take place on the following Monday.

Howey explained that SSC, which has outgrown its current space in the building at the rear of the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., Marietta, will continue to create unique theater experiences at the Marietta Center for the Arts, as well as at the Historic Marietta Theater, 130 W. Market St., which was acquired by the group in May. The Eater Family Foundation, a charitable trust established in honor of Gene Eater Herchelroth, presented a grant to SSC that will be used to help turn the Historic Marietta Theater into a state-of-the-art facility for cinema, stage, and community gatherings. Howey said there is a fiveto six-year timeline projected for the restoration of the Historic Marietta Theater. “Our major renovations (in the Marietta Center for the Arts) include building out our main stage theater space with a stage, lighting grid, orchestra pit, light and sound booth, and more,” Howey explained. Those renovations are scheduled to begin in 2019. Drawings of the new main stage theater will be unveiled at the Oct. 20 event. The first-floor offers two performance spaces, and the Gallery Stage will be used as a more intimate setting for plays, children’s shows, open mic nights, and more. That area will also be available for community members to rent for private events. The main stage theater will be named the Eater Theater in honor of the Eater Family Foundation and will house larger audiences and productions. While the Gallery Stage will be ready for an SSC production in February 2019, Howey said the anticipated opening of the Eater Theater will be in July 2019. The downstairs portion of the building will offer space for costume storage, a sewing room, fitting rooms, and a prop area, as well as an area for art education classes.

The NYSB was founded in 1887 to bring attention to the early ministry of The Salvation Army in the United States. Teske said. “Ethiopia is one of six countries in the world that count for half of maternal mortality, and one out of every 64 mothers dies in childbirth.” She shared an additional statistic from the World Health Organization, reporting that in 2016, one out of every 21 babies died before their first birthday. “The good news is that rate has been getting better every year; it has been cut in half since 2010. Simple measures like prenatal vitamins and checkups make a big difference,” she said. Eventually, Siloam Ethiopia would like to make a difference in the lives of children by opening an orphanage to offer safe housing, education, and nutrition. “There are so many children in

the streets,” Ketema remarked, noting that many youths have been orphaned due to AIDS. Siloam Ethiopia’s partner in Harar - Emmanuel United Church - has already taken in several young girls. This is a year of firsts for Siloam Ethiopia, an organization started several years ago by Demeke Getahun and Wegayhu Ketema, a married couple that resides in Elizabethtown. From the beginning, the goal of Siloam Ethiopia has been to open a clinic offering free health care to people who live in poverty in the rural area where Ketema grew up. This year, that goal was reached when the Siloam Ethiopia Medium Clinic opened in Harar in May. The organization’s first fall banquet will also take place this year. The fundraising event has been set for Saturday, Nov. 10, at 5 p.m. at Mountville Mennonite Church, 205 Froelich Ave., Mountville. The doors will open at 4:30 p.m., and appetizers will be available while guests mingle and place bids in the silent auction. The dinner will be a plated meal, and attendees may choose from a selection of American and Ethiopian entrees when they register at www.siloam ethio.org/events. The deadline to make reservations for the banquet is Monday, Nov. 5. A cost has been set to attend the banquet, and an offering will be accepted. There will also be opportunities to sponsor clinic workers or other costs

associated with running the clinic. Getahun and Ketema will present an update on the clinic, which they are visiting from Sept. 26 to Thursday, Oct. 18. The couple plans to participate in the dedication ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 13; inventory all of the supplies that have been donated to the clinic; and negotiate laboratory testing services with a local hospital. “That would be a savings of $300 a month,” Ketema said, noting that using the hospital’s lab would mean Siloam Ethiopia would not have to purchase an expensive complete blood count (CBC) machine. A CBC machine is still on the clinic’s punch list, just to be safe. Siloam Ethiopia would also like to obtain a blood chemistry machine, an autoclave, and a water purification system that would serve the entire clinic. A larger reservoir for water is also desired, as one of the services clinic workers have found themselves providing is access to bathing. It costs Siloam Ethiopia about $4 for each client visit. In the months since the clinic opened, the client base has been predominately female. “ We primarily have seen women because women are inordinately affected by poverty,” board member Lindsey

Cemetery Plans Volunteer Trainings The historic Lancaster Cemetery, 205 E. Lemon St., Lancaster, will hold Collaborate for a Cause from Monday to Wednesday, Oct. 22 to 24. Volunteers, preservation advocates, and conservation specialists will have the opportunity to share their time, talent, and skills to make a difference at Lancaster Cemetery. Like many graveyards, Lancaster Cemetery relies on volunteers to assist with beautification,

cleanup, and grave marker repairs. Under the direction of conservator Robert Mosko, volunteers will be introduced to the baseline knowledge, theory, techniques, and materials that underpin gravestone preservation. Volunteers will receive free hands-on training in cleaning headstones, repair practices, and resetting fallen monuments. Enthusiasts will also be introduced to

basic grave marker documentation, cleaning solutions and work practices. People of all skill levels may participate. The daily training sessions will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Oct. 22, Mosko will lead a full-day lecture and classroom instruction addressing cemetery safety, subsidence and erosion, landscape restoration and maintenance, types and styles of

gravestones, weathering and deterioration processes, and condition assessments and documentation practices. On Tuesday, Oct. 23, and Oct. 24, Mosko will guide participants through the handling, moving, and resetting of historic gravestones including basic engineering and rigging, raising and lifting sensitive markers, setting techniques, and setting materials and compounds.

Assisting Mosko in the workshop will be Robert Myers from Grave Keepers, located in Jeannette. Volunteers are encouraged to bring work gloves and wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes suitable for varying weather conditions. Participants are also responsible for providing their own meals, lodging, and transportation to and from Lancaster Cemetery.

Mosko has worked in more than 78 cemeteries across the country, restoring, repairing, and preserving more than 7,000 gravestones and monuments. Boy Scout Troop 64 is again looking for sponsors for wreaths to be placed on veterans’ graves for the holidays. The troop’s efforts in this area started two years ago when the Scouts volunteered to place wreaths on graves at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery (IGNC) with Wreaths Across America, a national program that acknowledges deceased veterans during the December holiday season. The mission of Wreaths Across America is simple: remember, honor, and teach. The program aims to remember the veterans who served, honor their service and sacrifice by placing a wreath on their graves during the holiday season, and teach younger generations about the sacrifices that have been made. The IGNC has more than 38,000 graves. During the wreath-laying ceremony two years ago, members of Troop 64 watched as volunteers read each veteran’s name out loud, placed a wreath on his or her grave, and then saluted. “Standing in the cemetery, realizing all the history and sacrifice that surrounded us, was overwhelming,” recalled assistant scoutmaster Nina Evans. “After emptying all the boxes of wreaths, we noticed that some graves did not get a wreath. Wreaths are privately sponsored, meaning there are only as many wreaths as people sponsor.” Last year, Troop 64 made it a mission to find sponsors for 1,000 wreaths. While the final total was 741, that was several hundred more than expected. “We were excited and humbled by the generosity of our community,” Evans remarked. “But the cemetery was still about 8,000 wreaths short, meaning every grave was not honored with a wreath.” In order to ensure complete coverage, Boy Scout Troop 64 is again seeking wreath sponsors. Volunteers are also welcome to place wreaths during the ceremony that will be held at the

The sixth annual 5K Zombie Fun Run is slated for Saturday, Nov. 10, on the grounds of Field of Screams, 3493 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. Daytime and nighttime races will be available. Proceeds will benefit the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition. Individuals may sign up to be

When organizers of the Friendship Community 2018 fall banquet were searching for a keynote speaker, one staff member remembered that a friend of hers had heard “Chewbacca Mom” speak. “(The friend had) said, ‘This person is great, and she has a great message,’” recalled Kyle Gamble, marketing assistant at Friendship Community. “We were looking for someone to bring laughter and joy with a faith background,” added Gamble, noting, “This is a speaker (who) will be different from those we have had in the past.” Candace Payne, also known as “Chewbacca Mom,” filled the bill for Friendship organizers, who have engaged her to speak at the annual Friendship Community banquet on Thursday, Nov. 1, at the Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Payne, of Grand Prairie, Texas, a wife and a mother of two, was shopping one day when she came across a mask depicting the hairy character from the “Star Wars” movies. “She bought it and put it on, and she (made a video and posted it to social media),” relayed Gamble. “She lost control and started laughing, and it took off from there.” According to some estimates, Payne’s video has been viewed more than 200 million times. Payne, who is a Christian and an Ouachita Baptist University alumna, began making the rounds on television shows, and she began speaking about the subject of simple joys. “(Payne) focuses on the simple joys in life, how to achieve them and what she does to bring about simple joys,” said Gamble. “(Her speech is) about appreciating all the moments in life.” Payne also began writing about her experience, and she is now the author of two books: “Laugh It Up” and the recently released “Simple Joys.” She is also the creator of the small group curriculum “Defiant Joy” study guide. In addition to the keynote speaker, Friendship will present two annual awards at the banquet. The Haverstick Award will be given to a Friendship client who has shown growth in

Lady Booters Sit Fourth in Section 3 Standings by Vaughn Brown

With two games to play in the season at the end of last week’s slate of girls’ games, Donegal (3-4, 4-8) was entrenched in fourth place in Section Three after traveling a rough road to get there. “I think there’s mixed emotions at this point,” stated had coach Scott Summers. “It has been a very tough second half of the season as we have been decimated by injuries. A lot of players have stepped up to the challenge and have done a nice job filling in.” The lady Indians finished out last week by going 1-2 with a 5-0 loss to ELCO last Monday, a 1-0 defeat Wednesday against Cocalico and, on a positive note, a 3-0 win over Octorara Friday night. The Raiders only scored once in the first half but tallied four in the second while holding Donegal to no shots and Cocalico scored once in the opening frame and rode it to a win. Against Octorara, India Foreman’s goal in the 16th minute of play stood for almost 40 minutes of play until Hannah Dunn added one of her own in the 50th to make it 2-0 Donegal. “We had good energy to start the game and created three solid scoring opportunities for ourselves in the first 10 minutes,” said Summers. “Second half we jumped out again with energy and aggressiveness and were able to put the game away for the most part at about the 50th minute mark.” Dani Brady added the insurance goal with under 10 minutes to play, ensuring the Indian victory. Lauren Stwalley turned away all four of Octorara’s shots on goal while Donegal outshot them 11-4. “Our backs did a great job limiting their pressure to just a few opportunities and Lauren had to make one or two timely plays to keep us safe which she did,” added Summers. “Overall, solid effort and 20 players got minutes in the match. It looks like we are going to just miss the playoffs which is tough on the seniors, especially those lost to injury. The message to the team and the goal for us over these final two weeks is to honor our seniors by playing with pride and finishing strong.” BOYS’ SOCCER Donegal’s boys split last week,

They began by blanking ELCO 6-0 but then lost to Cocalico and Octorara by identical 2-0 scores before ending the week with a 2-1 win over Palmyra. Both Kyler Enck (6:00, 18:00) and Jose De La Cruz (18:00, 55:00) scored twice against the Raiders and Philip Herzog (11:00) added one as well last Monday as Donegal put up five goals in the first half for the win. Gavin Murren turned away all five of ELCO’s shots on goal while the Indians held a 5-0 advantage in corners. Cocalico and Donegal each had 10 shots on goal in their matchup last Wednesday but it was the Eagles offense that capitalized as they got by Murren twice for the shut-out. Things went the same against Octorara as Anthony Falgiatore scored twice in the first half to pace the Braves who outshot Donegal 6-4 with four of those shots turned away by Murren. Zac Runkle put the Indians on the board against Palmyra on Saturday in only the third minute for the 1-0 lead on an assist by Herzog but that lead was negated by T.J. For the fifth consecutive year, a team of volunteers from Jerusalem Church, 1620 Newport Road, Manheim, has designed and created a corn maze. The community is invited to explore the corn maze at the church’s Disguise and Prize event on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 1 to 4 p.m. The free event is open to children and families. Disguise and Prize is a fall activity that allows children in costume to walk around to different decorated vehicles in the church parking lot to receive small prizes such as candy, stickers, and toys. Activity stations with various games and crafts will be set up in the parking lot. Free refreshments will also be available. The intense heat and heavy rainfall this summer caused the corn to grow extremely tall very fast, volunteer Angela Havice said. By the time the group of volunteers cut the maze during the second week of July, the corn was already more than six feet tall in some spots. “We are fortunate that the corn field drains well due to the type of soil,” noted Angela. “The field is on a slight hill, so the water runs down the hill. Quite simply, the corn is very tall this year, and we are fortunate that it is not muddy.”

Gene Saylor created the blueprint for the maze, with Ray Gruber, Kevin Havice, and Chad Eberly assisting with the letter placement with tape measures, strings, and flags for the “Christ Alone” design. Trent Martin and Mary Gruber completed the bulk of the cutting, and additional volunteers held flags and tape measures and provided confirmation that everything was straight. This year’s maze has one fewer letter than last year’s creation, which spelled out “Amazing Grace.” Angela shared that the message of the maze, “Christ Alone,” coincides with the mission of the church, which is “to lead people to find their greatest joy and pleasure in Jesus Christ above all things to the glory and worship of God.” Bible verses such as Romans 8:38-39 and Acts 4:12, along with the popular hymn “In Christ Alone,” also played a role in the church members settling upon the “Christ Alone” phrase. “Our mission is to draw attention to Jesus Christ and to make His name famous,” continued Angela. “True and lasting joy and pleasure cannot be found outside of union with Him. Our goal is to proclaim Christ in such a way that people can respond to the Gospel and be united to Christ by faith and therein find superlative and eternal gladness in God.” Organizers estimate that approximately 235 people

attended last year’s Disguise and Prize event, with many folks lingering longer than in past years to relax outside and take a few extra turns in the maze. Angela said that although the event is geared toward children, people of all ages have enjoyed taking a trip through the corn maze. “ We love hosting the Disguise and Prize event,” com-

mented Angela. “The vision of Jerusalem Church is to transform our community with the Gospel, (and) we feel Disguise and Prize allows us to do this in a unique way.” In the case of inclement weather, the event will take place on Sunday, Oct. 14. On Friday, Oct. 12, Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) will hold its annual homecoming celebration. Historical Society Plans Presentation The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society will sponsor a presentation about the story of African-Americans in Lancaster on Monday, Oct. 15, at 6:30 p.m. at James Street Mennonite Church, 323 W. James St., Lancaster. Dr. Leroy Hopkins will share stories about African-Americans’ role and involvement in Lancaster from the beginning of the city and county in the early 1700s through challenges faced in the 20th century, as well as the fight for civil rights. Hopkins, a Lancaster native, earned a Bachelor of Arts in German and Russian from Millersville College and a Ph.D. in Germanic languages and literatures at Harvard University. Hopkins is a professor emeritus of German at Millersville University, where he taught from 1979 to 2015. He has written and published articles on local African-American history.

miracle,” said Santiago. “Who doesn’t breathe for 20 minutes and lives?” When Ring was orphaned, his older sister took him in. “(Ring’s) older sister was a believer, and she introduced him to the Lord,” noted Santiago. RTCM, located at 2324 Leaman Road, Lancaster, strives to help men who have been traumatized through abuse and who have turned to abusing chemicals or developed other kinds of addictions. RTCM aims to support clients in finding healing and developing healthy coping mechanisms. RTCM has graduated 10 students since February. At this time, six students live in the facility along with two graduates who are serving as interns and four live-in staff members. The facility can accommodate up to a dozen students. Santiago noted that one way the ministry helps students to beat addiction is through significant amounts of Bible study and training. “We have a track record of working toward a minimum of 20 hours a week of either spiritual or life

skill classes with the men in this house,” said Santiago. “In a month’s time, that is 80 hours of discipleship classes.” According to Santiago, the banquet will start off with appetizers, followed by a salad bar. The main meal will include broasted chicken, barbecued pork, green beans, mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese. A dessert bar will offer guests a variety of sweet treats from which to choose. A Chinese auction that will be part of the banquet will include up to a half-dozen items. Special music will be provided by Jameson Road Band. Business and table sponsorships for the event are available. Tickets are required to attend the banquet. Seating is limited, and tickets must be purchased by Monday, Oct. 15. Pastor Jaime Santiago, executive director and founder of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), has known speaker David Ring for more than a decade. “I met David Ring in 2005 at the Sanford Teen Challenge in Sanford, Fla.,” recalled Santiago. “I was the director of education there when he came to speak.” Santiago had heard of Ring through the church community, and he was so impressed with Ring’s story that he remembered it and kept Ring in mind when he was in need of a speaker for the third annual RTCM fall banquet on Monday, Nov. 5, at Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open for fellowship and appetizers at 5:30 p.m., and the meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. Ring, who was born with cerebral palsy, became an orphan at the age of 14. He endured ridicule and embarrassment because of his disabilities, but Ring found acceptance and self-respect after beginning a relationship with Christ, which has sustained him and allowed him to overcome in spite of
