Goodwill’s WOW Program Offers Practical Tools for Life If you have questions about achieving financial stability, developing skills, understanding AI or navigating the tech world, Goodwill Keystone Area’s Wisdom Opportunity Wealth (WOW) is a great place to start. WO W o f fe r s o n e - o n - o n e coaching, retirement and longterm planning , AI and tech literacy training, career and entrepreneurship guidance, budgeting and credit support and tools to keep you accountable. And all of its programs are provided free of charge. WOW began after Sue Soderburg retired from Goodwill as chief mission officer and wanted to leave a legacy program with the organization she’d served for more than 30 years. It started as an initiative focused on women and was called Women of Wealth. “In a lot of ways, women are still behind, especially when it comes to financial literacy,” said Taylor Gilbert, WOW program director. “We served a ton of women within the first and most of the second year of the program, but as word got out, there was so much interest in what we were doing, and we felt we were limiting the number of individuals we could help. We didn’t want to turn down anyone who wanted our services.” As Gilbert explained, the WOW program comes into a location which could be a business, a school or any other group - and provides all programming, activities and take-home assignments, along with refreshments.

holidays, such as the Fourth of July and Christmas. “We exist to support the town’s organizations and to promote and support the happenings in Maytown,” Wivell said. “We don’t have a budget, so the Day in the Park is a fundraiser, and we’ll accept donations. We’re also really appreciative of the people and groups who are sponsoring the day.” Sponsors include Love’s Tree Service and Systems, Houseal Plumbing, Siegrist Automotive, Tom Jones Landscaping, Paramount Senior Living, Rose Madar Realtor and Herr’s Chips. “The Day in the Park is an event where the Civic Association wants to provide a space for the people of Maytown to connect with each other in a fun and relaxing atmosphere,” Wivell said. “It’s an easy way to get to know your neighbors and learn about all the things Maytown has to offer.” Preregistration is requested but not required for the apple pie contest. Reading the World will be offered for children age 6 and up on select Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. The program will include stories or folklore and a craft, all related to Bangkok, Thailand, on Oct. 8 and Barcelona, Spain, on Oct. 22. Featuring home-baked pies, the contest will judge entries on sweetness, crust, aroma, filling and texture. Entries will be accepted from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 4 at the park pavilion. After judging, entries will be auctioned off at 3 p.m., with proceeds donated to the Maytown Civic Association. “When you think of a community event happening in the fall, something like apple pie just fits,” Wivell said. “It seemed like something fun to add to the day.” This is the second year the Maytown Civic Association has held a community day, and in addition to bringing neighbors together, it’s an opportunity to spread the word about the group behind the event. “It’s a chance for the Maytown Civic Association to raise awareness of what we do and to let people know we exist,” Wivell said. “Our main objective is to oversee care and maintenance of the Maytown square.” The group oversees mowing and weeding of the grass and flowerbeds in the square and ensures the centerpiece of Maytown is kept up, including decorating it for various

Gilbert noted that feedback the organization receives from teenagers is especially compelling. “Kids will say, ‘Can you please come back? We never knew this before,’” she said. “Their teachers touch on financial topics, but we go into depth about everything from the FAFSA to scholarships, renting your first apartment, what it looks like to get your first car.” WOW is unique to Goodwill Keystone, and the program can be offered on weekdays, evenings or weekends. “We’ll come in over a lunchtime and do a program,” Gilbert said. “We’ll come in any time where we can reach the most people and that’s the most convenient for them.” WOW has offered programing to church groups, homeschool co-ops, residents of homeless shelters and domestic violence shelters, schools and more. “Whatever the group wants, we

James Malone awarded a $100,000 state grant to the program at Goodwill’s store and donation center in Elizabethtown. “I’m proud to have helped secure funding for a program that empowers people to achieve financial health by teaching them how to budget and manage their resources,” Malone said. “Goodwill’s WOW program meets people where they are through partnerships with organizations, like the Lancaster County Prison, to end cycles of poverty and give people a hand up into a better future.” Since its inception about three years ago, WOW has reached more than 2,000 individuals throughout 22 counties in southcentral Pennsylvania. This fall, Gilbert is launching a new series of tech literacy courses, focused on how to use programs like Microsoft Word and Excel. She’ll bring a handful of laptops, a WiFi hotspot, a projector and a screen to provide the classes. “We don’t want anything to be a barrier to us coming in and doing a program,” she said. WOW has also begun offering programs focused on AI, the first Goodwill in the country to do so, Gilbert said. “We’re working on breaking down the barrier of being scared or intimidated to use AI,” she said. “We talk about safety and privacy. We break it down so people can see how easy it is to use AI.” While some people may think AI is a topic suited for businesses or people in the tech industry, it can be a helpful tool for anyone, she said. “We have a program called ‘AI at Home,’ where we show people how they can use AI for things like making a meal plan, setting a grocery budget, help with their résumé or creating an exercise routine,” Gilbert remarked. WOW programs can be one-time sessions or multi-week initiatives, depending on the topic. The program is self-funded

Furry Friends Will Get a Blessing To mark the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, Christ Lutheran Church will host a Blessing of the Animals event on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 4 p.m. The service and activities will take place at Cassell Farm, the church’s picnic property, located at 522 Cassell Road, Elizabethtown. “It will be of biblical proportions,” joked pastor A.J. Domines. “Think Noah’s Ark.” While that might be a bit of an exaggeration, the event is open to pets of all kinds.

“We do a blessing of the pets each year, and we get about 10 to 20 people who bring their cats and their dogs,” he said. “We’ve gotten a bunny or a hamster as well. This year, I’m hoping for a bigger turnout of people and their animals. I’m hoping for a horse or sheep or goats at this service. I’ll take a giraffe if I can get one.” Holding the event at Cassell Farm rather than outside on the church grounds will provide room for a much larger gathering, Domines said, noting that the festivities will begin with a brief service at 4 p.m. “We have an outdoor chapel there,

and we’ll do a reading from Scripture and a prayer,”he explained.“We’ll have Susquehanna Service Dogs there, and they’ll introduce themselves and talk about what they do.” Representatives from Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation - both human and animal - will also be on-site. “They are bringing a Virginia possum named Belvedere, along with Lily and Elliot, who are groundhogs, and Feisty the squirrel,” Domines said. After the ceremony, people will be invited to the on-site pavilion for food and fun. “We’ll have food for people and some food for the animals, too, like dog and cat treats,” Domines said. “People will have a chance to pet the wildlife Acorn Acres is bringing, and we’ll have crafts for kids to do.” Connor Chapman, who is a member of the congregation, will sing and entertain on the guitar. Domines noted that the farm is a perfect location for a blessing of the animals event, because St. Francis embraced nature and ecology. The property has been part of the church

since the early 1990s. “Virginia Cassell was a member of our parish, and she left her estate to the church, which includes 26 acres of farmland in Mount Joy Township,” Domines said. “It was her desire to keep it as a nature preserve.” In 2000, the church built a pavilion on the site, and an altar has been constructed as well. Weddings have been performed on the property, and the Elizabethtown Boys Club uses the baseball field on-site, while a variety of trails and a playground can be enjoyed by visitors. Domines emphasized that people are invited to stay as long as they’d like at the event for fun and fellowship. “I want people to come out, have a good time and spend time together,” he said. “Even if you don’t have a pet, if you love animals, come on out for St. Francis Day. Dave and Barb Stauffer of Mount Joy have been serving with MFI for four years. The organization is a natural fit for the couple, who believe in volunteering. “Volunteers make the world go round,” Barb said. “Volunteers are so important.” When they both retired, the Stauffers purchased an RV and set a goal of traveling, Dave said. “We wanted to volunteer and do some service while we were traveling,” he noted. “We identified a number of different organizations we could help.” While talking to a member of his small group at Calvary Church, Dave learned about MFI. “They had just built a beautiful RV park and hospitality center in Florida,” he said. “We said, ‘Hey, let’s start snowbirding.’ We’ve been spending two months there each year over the last four years.” While in Florida, the Stauffers help in any way they can to support the efforts of MFI. “We’re workers,” Barb said. “We’ll do whatever is needed.” Over the years, Barb has collected trash and weeded outside MFI’s operation center, helped with mass mailings, relieved the front receptionist, cleaned on-site cottages, inventoried supplies, sorted donations and even chauffeured passengers occasionally upon their return from mission work. Dave has helped to construct a larger maintenance shop and storage room, built storage shelves to organize tools and hardware,

Both Barb and Dave admit they were hesitant to volunteer with MFI at first. “I had never heard of it,” Barb said. But when they started doing some research, they learned of the organization’s deep impact. They were especially impressed with MFI’s solid track record of delivering supplies and providing transportation for personnel to more than 600 Bible-based affiliate missions. MFI uses a fleet of DC-3 airplanes for deliveries of medical supplies, Bibles, food, mail and essential provisions to remote airstrips few others can reach, delivering help and hope where it’s needed most. “They have to follow all the FAA inspection rules for maintaining the plane,” Dave explained. “And
