Mady, the daughter of Adam and Amber Derr of Maytown, and Kinley, the daughter of Nic and Lisa Hoffmaster of Mount Joy, began the sport at the age of 3 and 4, respectively. And each competed for national titles at a young age - age 7 for Mady and 6 for Kinley. Both girls competed in the Drum Majorettes of America (DMA) Nationals earlier this summer in Aiken, S.C., where they took home Elite national titles. “An Elite competitor is the top level of competition in DMA,” Mady explained. “Elite competitors represent the top talent in the organization and are an example of dedication and perseverance to the competitors of other categories and younger twirlers.” In order to qualify to be an Elite competitor, a twirler must first win a set number of advanced national titles, she explained, adding that competing in the Elite category starts at age 10, but twirlers can begin qualifying toward Elite at age 7. Mission Church Takes Root BY CATHY MOLITORIS

When pastor Dan Hammer felt called to lead a church plant in Manheim, he trusted the Lord to see it through. “We’d been praying for years for this,” he said. “This is God at work. He’s opening doors. God opened a door and built a relationship. His fingerprints were clearly on this.” Mission Church will host its first ser vice in Manheim at Manheim Christian School, 686 Lebanon Road, on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 10 a.m. It will mark a northern post of the church that has more than two decades of roots in Lancaster. “More and more people were coming to our church from the Manheim, Mount Joy and Elizabethtown area, and that’s a long drive,” Hammer said, describing the motivation to seek a Manheim location. “We started looking at bringing the church closer to the people.” God was at work, Hammer said, when He connected the church planters with Jon Sauder, director of admissions, development and spiritual life at Manheim Christian School. As it turned out, several people who are active in the Manheim community were members at the Lancaster location of Mission Church, and they touted the benefits of the church plant. It was perfect timing. “We recently completed an expansion, with new classrooms and new bathrooms, and now that we had a better facility, we were eager to share it with the community,” Sauder said. “I was very quickly on board and sharing the See Mission pg 2

When Grace Moser talks about the new Global Methodist Church (GMC) she is helping to plant in western Lancaster County, her face lights up and her voice rises a bit with enthusiasm. “We have just seen an explosion of this movement,” proclaimed Moser, who, as the worship leader, is working alongside Pastor Joe DiPaolo and Frank and Joyce Young to help organize Cornerstone GMC. Cornerstone has been meeting in the tabernacle at the historic Landisville Camp Meeting since July 12. On Sunday, Sept. 20, the church plans to hold its first meeting in the Lancaster Farm & Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Calling GMC “a return to Orthodox Wesleyanism,” Moser stated that Cornerstone began to form following a court decision on April 22 in a case involving about 50 Pennsylvania churches and the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church. The court held that congregations wishing to disaffiliate from the conference must give up church buildings and property. Moser responded to the decision by

contacting the Northeast GMC about forming a new congregation in Lancaster, reaching out to her longtime friends the Youngs on the same day. “That’s where this congregation in Lancaster (County) was born,” explained Moser. On April 30, DiPaolo met with Moser and the Youngs to discuss church planting in the area and how to spread the word about an exploratory meeting they planned to hold in Mount Joy on May 5. Nearly 90 people attended that meeting, and the group formed a 10-member leadership team. The GMC movement in western Lancaster County had begun. In late May, a second public meeting was held, and this one included representatives of the Northeast Conference of the GMC. Aldersgate GMC in York became the sponsor of the new congregation, offering to provide support while Cornerstone applied for nonprofit status. “We voted on the name ‘Cornerstone’ based on Ephesians 2:19-20, which proclaims that Jesus is the chief cornerstone of the church,” stated Moser. The group began meeting in the unairconditioned tabernacle, averaging up to 90 worshipers each week. “Over the next two months, we saw all sorts of people and resources just about fall from the sky,” stated DiPaolo, who has served at a number of churches in eastern Pennsylvania, including as lead pastor of a church in downtown Lancaster, until he retired after 40 years of ministry. “There was such enthusiasm that we started worship services on July 12.” Moser described the service as “high liturgical,” noting, “We focus on the liturgy and the Scripture.” She added that music for the service includes traditional hymns mixed with contemporary worship songs. “We are doing our best to encourage the Spirit to move through different types of music,” explained Moser, who stated that attendees come from both traditional and contemporary backgrounds. Worship is followed by a sermon based on a particular Scripture passage. Moser noted that services generally last about an hour. She pointed out that the congregation hopes to offer a Sunday school for children by the end of the year. For adults, home groups meet See GMC pg 3

idea of the church coming here with our decision makers.” It also helped that some of the faculty are members of the church, as well as some of the students. “God is knitting together a really cool story for Mission Church,” Hammer said. “The heart behind this plan is to reach the community. It takes all different types of churches to reach all different types of people. You can never have enough churches.” The mission of Mission Church is “to make disciples who live loved and sent to the glory of God,” Hammer said. “We want to create disciples who will spread the Gospel and change lives for all who hear it.” With more than a dozen years as a senior pastor in Maryland, Hammer understands what’s needed for a successful church plant. He calls it the “four wheels of traction,” including a planter, people, a place and provision. “None of this could happen without God,”he said, of the conversations about the new church which began this spring. “It’s all His grace, all His glory.” He’s excited about a partnership between the church and the school beyond Sunday mornings. Recently, Mission Church members provided lunch and notes of encouragement to faculty and staff for a preschool-year in-service day. Sauder is also looking forward to benefits of bringing the church into the school. “We’re here to expand God’s kingdom, and we have a mission to do that for the students and their families,” he said. “For this space to have a mission beyond the school day is really exciting.” More than 100 Mission Church members will be making the move to Manheim, and Hammer invites anyone who’s interested in learning more to come out on Oct. 4. “We’re blessed to be a blessing,” he said, paraphrasing Genesis 12. “We want to bless the community locally with a Gospel impact that reaches out globally.” He’s hoping this plant will help the church continue to expand into the Harrisburg area and beyond. The nondenominational church has a student ministry and small group programs, and there is a place for everyone, Hammer said.

“Our goal is to glorify God and that every single person that comes in, whether they make this their home church or not, knows that God loves them, and we love them,” he said. “We truly want to live a ‘You are loved’ culture.” Perfection is not expected at Mission Church, he emphasized. “We want you to come as you are, not as you aren’t,” he explained. “Be met where you are with the love of God. We’re all messy people. We’re all sinners, but we’re going to love like Christ as Christ loved us. This is not something we’re called to define. Jesus does that. But it is a love we’re called to display.” He encourages people to come to Mission Church no matter where they are in their faith journey. “We want to reach lost people, and we want to help people grow,” he said. “We believe every single person has a place in the mission of God. According to Moser, these groups, originally called “class meetings,” are the foundation of the church. “We aim to be transformational,” she explained, adding that groups examine Scripture in light of questions such as “What does this say about God?,” “What does this say about mankind?” and “What will we do about this and who will we share it with?” Moser stated that the groups differ from Bible studies because studies tend to be more focused on gaining infor-

mation. “GMC is a movement that wants to make disciples of Jesus Christ,” she explained. Currently, Cornerstone is on track to be adopted as a GMC congregation in early December. One other GMC church in the county is located in the Gap area. “It usually takes a year to get to this point,” explained Moser. “We started worshiping (together) in only six to eight weeks. Selah’s Heart Posts Box-Packing Event Selah’s Heart will hold a box-packing event on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy. Community members may attend to help pack hospital boxes for women who have lost a baby. The event will also include a time of worship, as well as praying over the packed boxes. school team. It’s disappointing, they said, especially when both would like to pursue the sport in college. “U nfor tu nately, D on e gal doesn’t allow for majorettes in their marching band,” Mady said. “When auditioning to compete in college marching bands, the schools do like to see videos of us twirling with a marching band in a field show, especially showcasing skills like twirling fire and twirling multiple batons.” To compensate for not performing through school, the girls have to get creative. “Depending on the college and majorette program, some tryouts can be pretty intense and may have more than one level of auditioning,” Mady continued. “So what we can’t provide in marching band performances, we can sometimes make up for in competition footage.” Beyond bringing home national titles, Kinley noted that she loves getting to travel to new places and meet other twirlers around the country, and Mady said it’s fun to spend time with her “second family” at competitions. “Everyone around you is cheering for you no matter your performance, win or lose,” she said. But being a twirler isn’t easy, Kinley said. “The hardest part is that twirling incorporates many ‘sports,’” she explained. “You not only twirl a metal baton, but you have to be proficient in areas like gymnastics and dance to be successful at competitions.” Like most athletes, the girls also have to overcome the mental challenge that comes with competing. “I think the hardest part about baton twirling is that it’s just as hard mentally as it is physically,” Mady said. “It takes a lot of repetition and practice to get used to the feeling you get before you’re about to perform on the gym floor. It’s definitely a mind game, and it takes a little while to learn how to perform through the stress.”

The DMA Nationals required the girls to perform two baton routines, as well as model a gown and perform a “show presentation.” For the latter, Kinley performed a tap routine. She took home Petite Majorette Princess of America, awarded to competitors ages 10 to 12. Mady earned Majorette Princess of America, for ages 13 to 15. Both girls love being majorettes. “A majorette, traditionally, is a baton twirler,” Mady said. “You can see majorettes twirling in competitions, field shows with a marching band, in parades, leading pep rallies and so much more.” A baton twirler can vary in skill level, ranging from Novice through Elite, Kinley said. “Oftentimes dance training plays an impor tant role in your skill level,” she remarked. “Depending on the routine, you may see a twirler with one, two, three and even four batons at the same time.” Going into the South Carolina competition, both girls were confident. Kinley had competed in another national competition in Iowa earlier in the summer and said of her time in South Carolina, “I felt prepared, and I wanted to put good routines on the floor.” For Mady, the competition offered an opportunity to showcase all of the hard work and dedication she put into practice over the past year. “When they called my name for the title, I was overcome with joy and excitement thinking about how much fun this next year will be,” she said. “This is my ninth year competing nationally, and this is my third national title win.” Both girls put in countless hours practicing their sport, increasing their training in the months leading up to national competitions. Although they attend Donegal School District, where Kinley, age 12, is in seventh grade and Mady, age 16, is a junior, they don’t get to showcase their skills with a

providing resources to bereaved mothers and their family members and friends to help them navigate loss and honor the lives of their babies. The organization carries out its mission by providing hospital boxes, one-to-one grief support for moms, and grief coaching for loved ones. No preregistration is needed for the box-packing event.

TechLink was recently awarded a $280,000 PAsmart grant by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) to develop fiber optic instructional labs. The Lancaster County Career & Technology Center is among the members of TechLink, a consortium of nine technical schools focused on expanding career and technical education. The goal for the new fiber optic instructional labs is to significantly expand hands-on fiber optic training opportunities in southcentral Pennsylvania, with the capacity to ser ve approximately 400 students annually. The PAsmart grant designated for the project

was part of PDE’s latest round of grant distributions, announced on Aug. 21. The awarded funds were received by 17 organizations and totaled $3.5 million. Initiatives stemming from these funds will expand access to career pathways in multiple industries. The nine partner schools will implement three shared-equipment instructional labs, which will prepare secondary students and adult learners for fiber optic-related jobs. Students using the instructional labs will complete 40 hours of instruction and earn the CFOT Level 1 Certification, a credential valued by telecommunications, broadband,

and electrical companies. Select information technology teachers from each school will be trained to deliver the curriculum, teach the hands-on skills necessary to be a certified fiber optic technician, and administer the CFOT Level 1 Certification exam. The labs’ fiber optic training equipment will rotate among the TechLink schools to maximize its use and the number of students who can benefit from it. As the lead grant applicant and fiscal agent, the York County School of Technology will manage the funds, procurement, equipment acquisition, and required state reporting.
