Frank Stellar’s railway garden was a dream deferred for many years as other ventures - like a successful teaching and coaching career at Donegal High School and raising a family - took priority. Upon retiring, he set out to design and install an expansive backyard layout at his Manheim home. Instead of starting small and gradually adding on, he opted to go big from the start. “At my age, I knew what I wanted to do and knew that it’d be a one-and-done thing,” said Stellar. The approximately 30-by-70-yard layout features a double-track railway with G-scale trains and a multitude of buildings nestled among eye-catching gardens. For the buildings - which include a train station, a power plant, a coal mine, a church, houses, barns, and

more - Stellar worked from kits or modified birdhouses that fit his vision. Antique vehicles dot the roadways, and last summer Stellar added a small pond and babbling waterfall. Battery-powered trains travel along tracks that swirl throughout the yard at several levels of elevation, disappearing from time to time under tunnels or the deck before reappearing to cross bridges and trestles all hand-built by Stellar. “It’s all one continuous loop, and I can run three trains at a time,” Stellar noted. The tracks also lead through a small doorway into the garage, where they can loop around Stellar’s workshop before returning outdoors. Just how many hours go into maintenance and upkeep for the layout and garden is tough to say, but the entire project is a labor of love for Stellar. Mount Calvary Christian School (MCCS), which serves students in preschool through 12th grade, will hold its 26th annual benefit auction on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 28 and 29, at the school, 629 Holly St., Elizabethtown. The event will kick off on Sept. 28 with a barbecue dinner catered by a popular Mount Joy-based eatery. Help The Fight, based in Mountville, provides monetary funding for local residents who are currently receiving breast cancer treatment and for people who need the necessary breast cancer screenings. The Sober Spooktacular will kick off with a social hour from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Live music will be performed by Memory Laps(e), a southcentral Pennsylvaniabased band that specializes in psychedelic party music, playing both covers and original songs. A photo booth will be on hand, and ghoulish games are also planned. A silent auction will offer a variety of items and experiences for folks to browse and bid on throughout the evening, including designer purses, a lithograph print autographed by Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown, gift cards, themed baskets, and more. Winners will be announced at the close of the evening. At 6 p.m., a buffet-style dinner complete with beef, chicken, vegetarian, and gluten-free entrĂŠe options will be served, followed by a dessert buffet. Novak will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Born in Baltimore, Novak is known for being a professional skateboarder with the renowned Powell-Peralta team. He appeared in several popular MTV films as well as the television shows “Viva La Bamâ€? and “Bam’s Unholy Unionâ€? starring Bam Margera. In 2008, Novak and coauthor Joseph Frantz published “Dreamseller,â€? a book based on Novak’s life and experiences with heroin in Baltimore. He now travels the country as an addiction

Proceeds from the event will support the operating costs of DSAA as it continues to fulfill its mission to bring awareness to the community on heroin and opiate abuse. The organization’s mission, according to its website, is also to educate the community that heroin and opiate addiction is a treatable disease and to provide support to families affected by addiction and to individuals in recovery. DSAA recently celebrated one year in its current offices, and Emminger said the organization is looking for an even larger space to facilitate events it hosts, such as family support groups and educational trainings. This fall, DSAA will be adding a Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART) meeting to its list of supportive approaches to addiction services. Model Railroad Club Sets Open House
The MV&E Model Railroad Club’s facility at Masonic Village will be open to the public on Saturday, Sept. 22. Visitors may view the club’s trains and trolleys laid on 1,600 feet of track. The Masonic Village and Elizabethtown (MV&E) Model Railroad Club will host its first open house after the summer work season on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The community is invited to come see the club’s G-gauge, O-gauge, S-gauge, HO-gauge, N-gauge, Z-gauge, and standardgauge trains and trolleys laid on
1,600 feet of track. Club members will be available to answer questions. Attendees may view the many projects the club members worked on over the summer. According to Miller, 450 students are currently enrolled at MCCS, representing four counties and more than 80 local churches. Student tuition accounts for 70 percent of the school budget, while fundraising efforts like the auction fill in the rest. The target fundraising goal for this year’s auction is $180,000. “All of the money raised that weekend helps to support our school and our students,” explained Miller. “We want to glorify the Lord and thank Him for all He has done in our school already.” For anyone who may not be able to attend but would still to like to bid on items, or for those who want a sneak peek of what will be offered, the auction will feature online bidding and browsing at www.mccsauction.net. Festival from pg 1 Performances will include the N’bonye’ West African Dance and Drum Ensemble, Tammi’s African Drum Circle, Samburu and Maasai of Kenya Singing and Dance, Kenyan and Congolese youth groups, and Infamous Unstoppables Drill Team and Drum Squad. African artifacts will be available for purchase, including arts, crafts, clothing, and jewelry. Specific African countries will be featured at booths. Attendees will be able to interact with Africans from those countries and learn about their culture. A photo booth will be set up for attendees to take personal and group photos with African attire. The event will close with an African flag parade. The African Festival is a cooperative effort of Rafiki Africa’s founders, Roger Godfrey and Dorothy Dulo, along with community members including Zipporah Ngarama, Emerson Sampaio, Kevin Ressler, Thomas Sengeh, and Mardia Gibson, all of whom represent an African country and culture. To celebrate African culture in the Lancaster community, local organizers and host Rafiki Africa Foundation, in partnership with the City of Lancaster, will host the 10th annual African Festival at Binns Park, 120 N. Queen St., Lancaster, on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 1 to 7 p.m. The cross-cultural event will feature music, food, fashion, stories, and cultural education. The festival will feature authentic cuisine from local African food entrepreneurs, vendors selling Africanthemed goods, authentic African arts and crafts, local nonprofits that work in Africa, culturally themed children’s activities, African dance and drum performances, and a fashion show. The day will provide an opportunity to connect with nonprofits, small business owners, young professionals, Lancaster County school students, college students, immigrant families, and Lancaster county families. The food vendors present will be Africans who call Lancaster County home. Food vendors will offer cuisine from Eastern Africa, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Liberia.

The second half told a different story, however, as the Raider’s offense, which outshot Donegal 18-2, began to find its stride and scored three times, including a penalty kick by Ryelle Shuey and two goals by Cassie Johnson. ELCO also generated nine corner kicks to none by Donegal, while Stwalley stopped six shots on goal and Maddy Bailey turned away two for the Raiders. The boys wrapped two losses around a win last week as they dropped a 1-0 contest with Lancaster Mennonite (2-0, 4-2), won 7-0 against ELCO (0-2, 0-8), and finished with a 3-1 non-league loss to Red Land. Donegal (1-1, 3-4) was sitting in third place in Section Three at the end of last week, one game out of first place and tied with Octorara (1-1, 2-3) for second place behind the Blazers (2-0, 4-2) and Cocalico (2-0, 6-1). Gavin Murren’s day at the office against Lancaster Mennonite was a difficult one to say the least as the Blazers fired off 13 shots against the Indians with the senior keeper turning away 12 of them. Unfortunately, Lancaster Mennonite deployed a stingy defense that limited the Indians to three scoring opportunities which Gabe Willig stuffed to secure the shut-out. Ben Lefever made Donegal pay for an early mistake with a steal and pass to Tyler Wagner who found a way past Murren in the second minute who then, along with a tight defense of its own, clamped down and pitched a shut-out the rest of the way. Against ELCO, the Indians had three players score two goals apiece while Murren had a slow day with no shots to defend from the Raider’s offense. With no corner shots either, to Donegal’s seven, ELCO could not come up with an answer to the Indian defense. Leading only 2-0 after one half of play, the Indians poured in five more in the second to open the gap even further. Joseph Turbedsky got things going in the 15th minute and scored again in the 54th, making it 3-0 while Zac Runkle’s first goal in the 30th represented the second of the first half with his second standing as the final of the game in the 72nd minute. Philip Herzog (56:00, 65:00) and Levi Sites (66:00) also scored for Donegal while Austin Heim, Jose De La Cruz, Austin Bury, Ryan Dearborn, and Michael Linebarger all assisted on one goal apiece. Herzog’s goal against Red Land in the 37th minute on Saturday gave the Indians a 1-0 lead, but two goals from the visitors in the second half sealed their fate as the Red Land defense stifled Donegal the rest of the way. Murren stopped six of Red Land’s eight shots, but the Indians were only able to put three of their own on goal for the day in the loss. FIELD HOCKEY Donegal’s hockey team continued to rack up the goals and the wins last week as the girls came away with a 12-3 victory over L-S and followed that with a 10-1 win over Solanco. Mackenzie Allessie led all scorers with 13 goals through both matches.
Leading 5-0 against L-S after the first half, the Indians added seven more in the second while allowing the Pioneers to finally get on the scoreboard. Allessie tallied seven goals while Cayla Homsher added two and Lily Saunders, Kiera Baughman, and Reagan Clark each had one apiece. Goalie Aliza Johns saved 10 on the day. Solanco only managed two shots, but scored on half of them as Maggie Hurst accounted for the Golden Mare’s lone goal of the game. Unfortunately for Solanco, they were already down 9-0 thanks to six goals from Allessie, two from Saunders, and one from Clark, who also accounted for Donegal’s lone goal in the second half. CROSS COUNTRY The girls came away with another three wins last week as they traveled to Octorara for their weekly meet, topping Cocalico 15-55, L-S 17-41, and their hosts 21-37. The ladies remained undefeated at 5-0 and were comfortably in first place in Section Two. Rachel Fernald led the pack for Donegal finishing second overall with a time of 21:39 while Amanda Fry (3rd, 22:50), and Hadley Shoaf (4th, 22:57) all placed in the top five. Ella DeBruin (6th, 23:07), and Myra Naqvi (8th, 23:24) rounded out the top ten for the Indians followed by McKenzie DuBuskey (11th, 24:07), Keri Anderson (16th, 25:15), Sarah Hinkel (23rd, 26:20), Jordyn Smith (25th, 26:34), and Megan Myers (31st, 27:56). Logan Fry finished in 5th place with a time of 19:09 to pace the boys who lost to Cocalico 21-34 and L-S 19-47, but were able to top Octorara 15-46. No other Donegal runner finished in the top ten with the Pioneers placing five and the Eagles four in that category. Matthew Wallace placed 13th in 19:55 followed by Sam Rothstein (15th, 20:14), Brandon Hess (16th, 20:27), Hunter Gehman (18th, 20:41), Aydan Miller (29th, 21:49), Ethan Steck (31st, 22:40), Hunter Williams (36th, 23:09), and Nathaniel Jenney (38th, 23:08). TENNIS Donegal claimed a clean sweep of Lebanon last Wednesday by topping the Cedars 7-0 on the road. The lady Indians only lost nine games on the day in their first win of the season. In doubles play Hailey Fry and Ellen Zern won 8-1, over Ashlyn Bare and Nancy Garcia, Emily Ashley and Lyla Naqvi defeated Jenna Aviles and Everia Gonzalez 8-0, while Mary Murphy Kailey Frownfelter downed Ashley Garcia Mejia and Alaina Colmenares 8-1 for the early 3-0 lead. Ashley put away Aviles in straight sets to begin singles play with scores of 60, 6-0 while Naqvi beat Gonzalez 6-2, 6-1, Murphy finished Garcia Mejia 6-2, 60 and Emma Shelly won 6-1, 6-1 over Colmenares.

Church Group Slates Apple Fest The Episcopal Church Women (ECW) of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 209 S. Market St., Mount Joy, will hold its annual Apple Fest on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the undercroft social hall. The event will feature crafts and a variety of foods for sale, including homemade apple dumplings and apple pies. The menu will include chicken corn soup, pork barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs, beverages and various desserts. A salad bar will be available. The Apple Fest began as a fundraiser for the Access for All addition to the church, which made the entire building handicapped-accessible. been a part of his life since he was a child. “As a kid, my parents would take me to the Reading Railroad in the stroller, and it was something that just stayed with me,” he recalled. Stellar’s grandfather worked as a tower operator at the Reading Railroad, where several of his uncles established careers as well. When Stellar reached the ripe old age of 2, his father presented him with a Lionel train set that was his first foray into what has become a lifelong model railroading hobby. “It was something that was instilled in me, and I just had this ambition,” said Stellar. Stellar’s garden railway will be one of 10 stops on the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s 12th annual Garden Railways Tour on Sunday, Oct. 7. The self-guided, family-friendly tour will be open from 1 to 5 p.m., with tour sites in Manheim, Lititz, Lancaster, Wrightsville, and Coatesville. There is a cost for the tour, with children age 5 and under admitted free of charge. Garden Railways Tour tickets may be
purchased in all Stauffers of Kissel Hill garden center stores and in the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s museum store, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, during regular business hours or by using a printable ticket request available at www.rrmuseumpa.org. The inaugural Night to Shine Golf Outing Fundraiser will take place on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Highlands of Donegal, 650 Pinkerton Road, Mount Joy. The event will feature a scramble format and will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Separate costs have been set for individuals and for groups of four, and there is a dinner-only option. Registration includes golf, the use of a cart, range balls, a gift bag, on-course beverages and snacks, and a catered dinner. The dinner, which will be served at approximately 6 p.m., will consist of barbecued chicken and ribs, baked beans, a seasonal vegetable, a salad bar, rolls, and assorted desserts. Special on-course challenges and addons such as mulligans will be available, and bundles may be purchased at sign-in on the day of the event. Cash prizes will be given to the first-, second-, and third-place teams, and there will be a cash prize for the low team total on all par 8 holes. A minimum of 72 golfers are required for the listed prizes; if fewer than 72 golfers take part, prize amounts may vary. All proceeds will support Night to Shine, a prom experience for teenagers and adults with intellectual and/or physical disabilities. The plan is for the golf event to become annual. Efforts To Preserve Land Tract Continue A significant opportunity was recently presented to the Pennsylvania Chautauqua in Mount Gretna. A plot of land, part of historic Soldiers Field where the Pennsylvania National Guard held its annual encampment and training between 1885 and 1935 is being offered for sale to the Pennsylvania Chautauqua. Troops trained on Soldiers Field for service in the Spanish-American War and World War I. The land, originally part of Robert H. Coleman’s holdings, was donated by him for the Pennsylvania National Guard’s use. Coleman’s railroad line, the Cornwall Lebanon Railroad, now part of the Rails-toTrails system, transported the soldiers to Mount Gretna, as well as their families and friends who came to visit them. Many postcards still exist picturing the soldiers and their daily lives while stationed at the field. On July 20, Pennsylvania Chautauqua stockholders voted to approve the purchase of the land which will benefit the Mount Gretna community in various ways: by preserving and enhancing the historical features of this portion of Soldiers Field; providing recreational opportunities such as

walking and fitness trails, bird watching, picnic areas and Rails-to-Trails linkage; providing educational opportunities and programs such as tree identification, nature experiences and historical markers; and by providing periodic overflow parking for Mount Gretna’s many summer cultural activities and programs, as well as for area businesses. Today, Mount Gretna is still visited each summer by thousands of people from throughout southcentral Pennsylvania, the U.S. and overseas. To date, the Pennsylvania Chautauqua has received nearly $850,000 in pledges from those who view the purchase of this portion of Soldiers Field as a unique and perhaps last-chance opportunity to protect and preserve this tract of land. A unified effort has resulted in pledges which have come from all sections of the Mount Gretna community as well as from around the country. Seventy percent of funds have come from individual and local businesses, with the rest being committed by the Pennsylvania Chautauqua Board of Managers and Pennsylvania Chautauqua Foundation.

Visitors to the annual open house hosted by the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County at 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. will be able to tour the organization’s new mobile unit. “We just christened it, and we’ve been debugging it. We have to tweak (the process) so it’s honed,” said Pet Pantry executive director Melody Sanders. “We will start scheduling more appointments (after the) fall, and we’re hoping to find someone to pull it. (Once it’s fully operational), I think it will be a valuable resource for the community.” The mobile unit was designed to serve three purposes. First, the traveling veterinary facility can host feral clinics on farms or in communities where feral cats live in abundance. Spay/neuter and vaccination services will be available during those clinics. “We’re trying to get a trap-neuter-release initiative going,” Sanders said. “We’re willing to work with communities who can get out there and trap (feral cats).” Second, the mobile unit can host vaccine clinics for family pets. It is important to ensure animals are current on protection from rabies, distemper, and other viruses. Third, the brightly colored trailer will be an eye-catching addition to promotional events. It is air-conditioned, so cats that are available for adoption will be able to rest comfortably for folks to meet inside. The open house will include self-guided tours of the Pet Pantry’s headquarters, visits with adoptable cats, a meet-and-greet with canine mascot Sasha, and refreshments. Pets are welcome to accompany their owners and pose together for fall fun pictures
for a fee. A limited number of Halloween costumes will be available for pets to wear in the photos. Additional costumes may be purchased in the fully stocked thrift shop. Folks may also buy tickets for the third annual bingo fundraiser that will be held on Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Columbus Association, 1575 New Danville Pike, Lancaster, and order their bulbs for the annual Light the Way to Meet the Need event. Bulbs may be dedicated in memory or honor of pets and people. They will be displayed at the Pet Pantry during December, and a lighting ceremony will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 6 p.m. Pictures with Santa Claus will be available for a fee from 3 to 6 p.m. that day. There is no cost to attend the open house, but attendees are asked to bring dry food for dogs and cats. “It’s our opportunity to fill our shelves with the food we need to prepare for the holiday season,” Sanders said. “We do a double distribution in November and none in December so that everyone has what they need for the holidays.” The Pet Pantry regularly distributes 5,000 pounds of pet food each month. Distributions take place in Gap and Coatesville, as well as at Water Street Mission and the Pet Pantry. The organization supplies food to rescue groups on an emergency basis. The Pet Pantry also supports more than 140 cats that are available for adoption. Most of the animals live in foster homes, but a few temporarily reside at the Pet Pantry. About 15 felines are anticipated to be present at the open house.
