For people facing retirement, Medicare is most likely on their minds. But navigating the process of choosing a plan, enrollment and other details may seem overwhelming. Mount Joy Church of God wants to help. The church will host a Medicare Education Workshop on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 6 p.m. It will be held at Mount Joy Church of God, 30 E. Main St. The workshop will be presented by Roxann Brown, financial consultant, and Lynette Morales, stewardship consultant. Both women work for Everence. Participants will be guided through topics including the different parts of Medicare, understanding coverage options, deciding when to enroll and learning how to enroll. Medicare consists of several parts and coverage options, each with its own rules, costs and considerations. The choices people make can affect how they receive health care and what they pay for services and prescriptions. The workshop is designed to provide general information in an easy-to-understand format, giving participants an opportunity to become more familiar with the Medicare system before making decisions about their coverage. Attendees can also bring questions they have about the enrollment process or available options. “Before getting into ministry, I was a licensed financial adviser for about 15 years, so I know from experience this is a topic that confuses a lot of people,” said Adam Swarr, pastor of family ministries for Mount Joy Church of God. “My hope is that those in attendance will learn a few things so they can make

Elizabeth St., Maytown, will host its annual bazaar and yard sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. “Prices for most items are by donation,” said Linda Good, church secretary. “There are a few special items that will be priced.” People will also have the opportunity to win a laundry basket filled with new household items. The winner will be drawn at 2 p.m., and people do not need to be present to win. Free coffee and doughnuts will be available, and baked goods will also be for sale. Good said the sale always features a large inventory. “We have something for everyone,”

she remarked. “All items are in good condition. Some of the items are new and still in their boxes.” The variety of items will include furniture, toys, purses, household goods, curtains, bedding, shoes, collectibles, tools, jewelry, books and more.
Shoppers may find framed pictures, holiday items, office supplies, gadgets and glassware, Good said. For bargain hunters, the bazaar offers plenty of opportunities to browse at a leisurely pace and discover something unexpected. See Bazaar pg 3

Daniel Ebersole, 86, of Maytown will give a presentation and wood carving demonstration on Monday, Sept. 21, at 2 p.m. at Paramount Senior Living at Lancaster County, 2760 Maytown Road, Maytown. Refreshments will be available following the program. Dan has been carving animals, primarily birds, for more than 40 years. He took up the hobby in 1982 after he and his wife, Janet, met a wood carver at the Mount Gretna Art Show. Janet, a bird lover, had a mourning dove carved, and when she and Dan picked up the bird, they saw the artist’s vast collection, and Dan decided to try his hand at carving. His first piece was a small duck, and he has gone on to make more than 30 additional ducks, along with other birds. His favorite pieces are a hawk landing on a branch with its wings outstretched and an owl, which also has its wings open. Dan’s collection includes items
other than birds, as well. One of the carvings Dan is most proud of is a wooden carousel horse that Janet requested. It stands approximately 5 feet high and 5 feet wide, and it took longer to create than most items about 2 years. Dan’s collection includes close to 50 carvings. He does not sell his items but prefers to have them on hand to show visitors. Dan moved into Paramount Senior Living in July, but he had already called the area home for 65 years. He and Janet built a home on Maytown Road in 1962 and lived there for 60 years. Dan remembers working the fields behind his house until the property, now known as Paramount, was developed as Longwood Manor. A few years ago, he sold his home to live with his daughter, who also lives near Paramount. Dan was a mechanic at Alcoa for 37 and a half years, retiring in 2000.

The Mount Joy Area Historical Society will welcome Scott Mingus as a guest speaker at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 21, at the Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy. Mingus will present “Lincoln’s Funeral Train in Pennsylvania,” discussing the journey of the Lincoln funeral train. The train traveled from Washington, D.C., to Harrisburg and Philadelphia over the course of April 21 and 22, 1865. It continued across New York state to Buffalo and from Buffalo to Cleveland, Ohio, passing through Erie on April 28. Mingus is a retired scientist and executive in the global specialty paper industry, as well as an award-winning author. He has written more than 35 Civil War and Underground Railroad books and numerous articles for Gettysburg Magazine and other historical journals. He has been featured on various TV programs. Mangus writes the Cannonball blog on the Civil War history of York County, where he currently resides with his wife. Refreshments and tours of the museum will be available following the program. The meeting is free and open to the public, and donations will be accepted. The historical society’s building is open every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m., and visitors may explore the exhibits. Maytown UCC holds worship services at 10 a.m. on Sundays, both in person and on Zoom. better educated decisions and reduce some of the stress in their life.” The workshop is another way for the church to connect with people outside its congregation, he said. “Our church has always had a focus on the community, but this year we wanted to take it to the next level, and part of that is putting on a series of educational talks,” he explained. “We did a parenting event in February, a financial planning workshop in April and now this Medicare information presentation.” He hopes anyone who is interested will come out for the program to learn more about an important life milestone. “With my background as a financial adviser, I’ve seen how stressful retirement planning can be,” he stated. “Most of the stress comes from not knowing enough to make an educated decision. As a church, we want to help our community and neighbors, and we believe we can do that by providing free opportunities for everyone to learn about important topics like Medicare.” There is no charge to attend the workshop, but registration is requested so there is enough seating for everyone. History from pg 1 Quest tall case clock, made in Maytown circa 1815. “The archive building project was started in February 2025 - taking an existing garage on the museum property and demolishing it to the bare studs and rebuilding it from the ground up,” said Janie Garber, treasurer and chairman of the building finance committee. “Trees had to be removed; a new floor had to be poured; new windows and doors, heating and air conditioning added; and new furnishings (were added) to accommodate the plastic storage boxes that were in storage.” The new space will improve storage and display of Maytown artifacts, she said. “We are computer cataloging all information before we put it out for display,” Garber explained. “Our
goal is for the public to be able to research the information on the buildings and businesses of early Maytown.” At the open house, entertainment will be provided in the museum garden by the duo SweetLife Music. Refreshments will also be served. “We are going to recognize the construction companies for their part in creating the climate-controlled archive building,” Garber said, noting that the event will also include an expression of gratitude for people who have financially supported the project as well as recognition of the building committee and their brainstorming and efforts guiding the project. and Skip Nell. “We were given the task of reaching out to businesses in the area and members of the society and community to ask for financial support,” Garber stated. “We worked about six months before turning out a one-time gift or three-year plan. To date we have received $39,300 toward the project.” The project has a fundraising goal of $50,000. She hopes people will come out for the open house and a visit to the museum, where they can learn more about the organization’s importance in the community. “The Maytown Historical Society has been in existence since 1985,” she said, noting that the society’s museum is the oldest building in town. “It was organized to preserve the history of Maytown that was founded in 1760. ... Our goal is to promote, educate and preserve the history of the town.” Maytown might be small, but it has a deep and important history. Settled by German and Scots-Irish immigrants, the town became a hub for fur trading and supplies for people traveling west in America’s early days. Muskets were manufactured in Maytown for use in the Revolutionary War, and notable former residents include Simon Cameron, who served as Abraham Lincoln’s Secretary of War. “We never want to lose the history of the town,” Garber said. “By educating the public, we hope to keep Maytown alive.” To learn more about the Maytown Historical Society, visit https://maytownhistory.com.

There will be no class on Mondays, Oct. 12 and Nov. 23, and Thursdays, Oct. 15 and Nov. 26. People may choose to attend one or two days per week, with a discount on the fee for the two-day option. The program is suitable for people of all fitness levels and can be adapted to individual needs. Participants should bring a yoga mat and yoga block.
