DSAA Seeks Donations For Care Kits
The public is invited to donate personal care items to the Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance, which will distribute them in care kits to people living in recovery houses throughout Lancaster County.
One of life’s greatest tragedies is when a parent loses a child. But some grieving parents have been able to transform their heartbreak into positive efforts to benefit the community. Such is the case with Stacy Emminger, executive director of the Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA), which supports those in recovery and provides assistance to families that have a loved one with addiction issues. Emminger lost her son, Anthony Perez, to an overdose when he was 23. The family decided to form DSAA after learning that other local parents were dealing the same issues. DSAA began by offering family support groups that met at the Sheetz Reception Center in Mount Joy. Emminger later became a certified family recovery specialist, and the facility opened its own office in 2015.

FIA Invites Public To Get Creative Friends In Action International (FIA) is looking for individuals to transform a variety of supplies into items to be sold at a fundraiser event on Saturday, Oct. 3. The event was inspired by the HGTV show “Flea Market Flip.” A local nonprofit, FIA uses infrastructure projects in remote locations of the globe as a platform to share the Gospel with unreached indigenous people groups. Interested readers are invited to visit FIA’s Middletown headquarters, located at 3950 E. Harrisburg Pike, by appointment to select free supplies. They may browse items left over from construction projects as well as donated yard
sale items. These supplies include chairs, tables, bicycles, small furniture, books, mechanical items, and household items. With materials secured, participants can work at home using their eye for style and some elbow grease to turn these leftovers into something new. The Mount Joy Lions Club will hold a white cane awareness event and chicken barbecue at J.B Hostetter & Sons Inc., 1225 W. Main St., Mount Joy, on Saturday, Sept. 12. The white cane event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the Lions will receive donations to benefit Vision Corps of Lancaster. Lions will seek to raise awareness of the white cane, which signifies that the pedestrian using it is
blind or visually impaired; alerts motorists of the need to exercise special caution and provide the user the right of way; and symbolizes the independence, confidence and skills of the person who is using it. Chicken barbecue meals will be available on a firstcome, first-served basis from 11 a.m. until sold out. The cost of a chicken barbecue meal will include a half-chicken and a potato.
Lions Set Movie Night Columbia Lions Club will offer Movies Under the Stars on Friday, Sept. 18, at Columbia Crossing, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. The movie “Yogi Bear” will be shown at dusk. Attendees

Just put your first name and say, ‘Keep up the good work’ or ‘We are praying for you.’ It makes them feel like someone (cares) about them,” Emminger emphasized. A secondary goal is to make the community aware of people in recovery houses, many of whom are unemployed and are continuing with outpatient treatment to battle their addictions. “(They are)

Local women are invited to attend a one-day Ladies Conference on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Wrightsville Assembly of God, 365 Orange St., Wrightsville. The event is free and open to all women age 18 and over. The first-time event will feature breakfast and talks by guest speaker Stephanie Randolph. Lunch will be provided. According to conference organizers, the goal of the event is for ladies to come together for a day of fellowship and spiritual refreshing. The theme of the conference, “Strength and Dignity,” comes from Proverbs 31:25, which states, “Strength and dignity are her clothing and her position is strong and secure; and she smiles at the future (knowing that she and her family are prepared).” “That verse is the heart of the conference. It speaks about women using the words ‘strength’ and ‘dignity,’” said pastor Aaron McNatt. “We’ve never (hosted a women’s conference) before, but I think the women in our church are excited about it. I am hearing a lot of anticipation for it.”
The Ladies Conference will open at 9:30 a.m. with breakfast in the church café area. Attendees are asked to bring a covered breakfast dish to share. Randolph will present Session 1 at 10:30 a.m., followed by lunch at noon. Session 2 will begin at 1:30 p.m. The speaker sessions will be held in the church sanctuary. “They will follow the same protocols we follow on Sunday,” McNatt noted. “Seating will be spaced out and masks are suggested.” Randolph has served in a variety of ministry areas, working with people of various ages and ethnic groups in Christian schools and churches for the past 27 years. Currently serving at New Life Assembly of God in Lancaster, Randolph leads ROOTED, the fifth- and sixth-grade ministry; directs the youth drama team; and works in the church office as the executive assistant. Randolph and her husband, Tom, have one daughter, Mikayla, 16, whom they adopted from China 15 years ago. McNatt noted that the guest speaker was recommended by the church’s women’s ministry, directed by

Oak St., Manheim, with her husband, Ray, believes that treatment for a mental health issue should not be viewed any differently than needing vision correction. “If you have an eye problem, you go to the doctor to get glasses,” she said. “I think kids need to hear that (connection) a lot. It makes it real.” Back in February, Lisa contacted Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC) to see how she could help promote an enhanced understanding of mental health in children

All funds raised by the tournament, which can accommodate a total of 76 players, will go to MHALC to help promote mental health through advocacy, education, and support. Golfers may check in for the tournament at 9:30 a.m. that day. The tournament will start at 10 a.m. A heavy rain date has been set for Saturday, Sept. 26. According to Lisa, the 19hole course has been called “the most challenging course in Lancaster County.” “The best score here has been a 58,” she said, noting that most people score in the 80s. The tournament will be in a scramble format with a shotgun start. “A shotgun start is when everybody is assigned a hole, and they all start at the same time,” said Lisa. “(Players) keep their ball and finish all the holes.” She also explained that in a scramble, all the players play from the best spot. “Everyone moves their ball to that spot (after the first shot),” she said. Prizes will include trophies and cash for the top three players and a closestto-the-hole prize. “We will pick a hole and someone will be out there to measure who is closest on the first shot,” Lisa said. There will also be door prizes and opportunities to purchase meal packages ahead of the

Chorale Wins National Award The Susquehanna Chorale, a nationally acclaimed adult chamber ensemble based in central Pennsylvania, recently won second place in the American Prize competition, which recognizes and rewards the best performers, ensembles and composers in the United States. Community Action Partnership (CAP) recently announced it received a $22,336 grant from the Truist Foundation in support of Learning In Full-Time (LIFT) Jobs, a partnership between CAP and Ephratabased Four Seasons Produce. LIFT Jobs is a yearlong pilot program for lowincome single mothers. It combines on-the-job training at Four Seasons Produce with intentional life skills development. Stipends are available to the participants for transportation, child care, and housing, three of the biggest barriers to employment facing single mothers struggling with poverty. The City of Lancaster will host the 44th annual Red Rose Run, presented by Penn State Health, from Wednesday, Sept. 19, through Tuesday, Sept. 22, as a virtual race. This year’s event will take a new format to allow runners to complete the 5-mile race from anywhere. People of any activity level are welcome to run or walk, and participants can enter their time for a chance to win in categories such as First Time Submitted on Sept. 19 or Runner Furthest Distance Away From Lancaster. Along with registration, participants will receive a neck gaiter. T-shirts and other merchandise will also be available for purchase. All proceeds of this year’s event will be donated to the Lancaster Central Market. Registration is now open.
