In 1976, a new Christian school opened in Elizabethtown. Mount Calvary Christian School began with 100 students and has since grown in size while its Christcentered mission has remained steadfast. The school will mark its 50th anniversary with an auction and celebration on Friday, Sept. 25, and Saturday, Sept. 26. The festivities will be held at the school, 629 Holly St., Elizabethtown. Friday’s activities will begin
The moral of the story reflects the mission of the organization. “Anne of Green Gables” and Servant Stage are a match made in community theater heaven. Not only is Johnathan Bauer the executive director of the nonprofit Servant Stage, but he’s also the director of the delightful play “Anne of Green Gables.” “When you get these shows based on novels, there are so many themes and so many messages,” said Bauer. “Part of it is kindred spirits and friendships, and the transformative powers of families. These kindred spirits can bring out the best in us. With the power of love and friendship, you can be more of yourself. “Anne has had a pretty difficult life, and she has this amazing optimism, hope, creativity and desire to connect with people,” added Bauer. “She sees the extraordinary in life.” Servant Stage will present 19 performances of “Anne of Green Gables” from Friday, Sept. 4, through Sunday, Sept. 27 - mostly on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays - inside Lancaster Mennonite School’s High Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The show is free to attend, and a goodwill offering will be accepted. The two-hour performances are broken down into two acts and separated by an intermission. “It moves pretty quickly, and it has this Golden Age of Broadway feel to it,” said Bauer. “It’s a period piece set in the late 1800s, with big dance numbers and a big cast. It’s mostly a lighthearted show, and it’s definitely for all ages. I

Pequea Creek Races Planned Sickman’s Mill and Music for Everyone will team up to hold the 2026 Pequea Creek Races from Friday to Sunday, Sept. 11 to 13, at Sickman’s Mill, 671 Sandhill Road, Pequea. The Pequea Creek Races invite teams to put their creativity and teamwork to the test as they design and build a boat using a provided package of materials. Every team receives the same supplies, but what they create is entirely up to them. Throughout the weekend, teams will compete for awards recognizing design, creativity, beauty,
humor, and speed on the water. Teams will gather at Sickman’s Mill at 5 p.m. on Sept. 11 to receive their building materials and plan for building their boats. Teams will return at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, to construct their boats and then enjoy live entertainment and refreshments. A total of 70 professional and amateur actors and actresses, between the ages of 5 and 70, make up the double-role cast. “We’re trying to portray a town,” said Bauer, a resident of Strasburg. “Our cast is more than a typical theater show. We’ve got retirees, workers from different occupations, and half of the cast are students. It helps to create this feeling of a town.” Since its founding in 2015, Servant Stage has generated more than 100 productions and staged more than 1,500 performances. Currently, Servant Stage, which is headquartered at 1842 William Penn Way, Lancaster, is producing more than 200 performances each year.

tory, including the Mount Joy Area Historical Society, which has created information boards and will display relics from the town. “This is an opportunity to get the full Mount Joy experience,” said Denny Brandt, a member of the event committee. The celebration will conclude with a drone show at 8 p.m., the first of its kind in Mount Joy. “The drone show is provided by Open Sky Drone,” said committee member Allory Melhorn, who noted that the almost-15-minute show has been designed to highlight Mount Joy and its history. Drones will form images in the sky in the shape of the “Mountjoy” merchant ship, for which the town is named, along with stars and other patriotic designs intended to mark the anniversary of 9/11. The committee members hope the new date will bring out a crowd eager to see the new municipal building firsthand and enjoy a variety of activities. “We are encouraging everyone to bring lawn chairs or blankets so they can enjoy the band and drone show,” Stebbins said. Parking for the event will be available on the street, as well as at Glossbrenner Church, 713 Church St., Mount Joy. Guests needing handicapped-accessible parking will be directed by fire police.

While the original event was set to mark both Mount Joy’s milestone anniversary and the 250th birthday of America, the rescheduled celebration’s focus has shifted a bit, Stebbins said. “The emphasis will be more on the 175th anniversary of Mount Joy and the 25th anniversary of 9/11,” she explained. “We will still have food trucks, The Nines Band and Phredd, a bounce house, Razzle Dazzle Balloons, fire and police vehicles, historic displays from Fire Department Mount Joy and the historical society and tables from local civic groups and nonprofits.” The event will kick off at 4 p.m. with brief presentations from representatives of Sen. James Malone’s office, Rep. Tom Jones, the Lancaster County Commissioners and Mount Joy mayor Tim Bradley. The opening activities will end with a ribbon cutting for the new municipal building, organized by the Chamber of Commerce. Activities for children and adults will be featured during Stars, Stripes and Joy, with numerous food trucks on-site to provide refreshments. Food trucks will include Rita’s Italian Ice, Iron Born Bistro, Truckin’ Chow Down, Two Cousins, the Rotary Fry Wagon and Taco RV. Several participants will provide information about Mount Joy’s his-

About 80 different churches are represented in the school, Griest said. He attributes the school’s longevity to both God’s presence and the dedication of Mount Calvary Church. “The theme of the year is ‘50 Years of God’s Faithfulness,’” he stated. “He has proven Himself to be faithful in a number of different ways to the school. We’re also thankful for the support of Mount Calvary Church. We’re one of the only church-run Christian schools in Lancaster County, and the church has been unwavering in its support of Christian education. The sixth annual Nick Hershey Memorial Pickleball Tournament to benefit Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) will take place on Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Donegal Junior High School tennis courts, 915 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, with play beginning at 8 a.m. The Nick Hershey Memorial Pickleball Tournament started as a small group of family and friends coming together to honor Nick’s life (1994-2021) and to raise funds for the DSAA. The tournament outgrew its original location on the John and Mable Hershey Farm. Pickleball players of all levels are welcome, and partners are not required. The tennis courts

DSAA has been providing services in the addiction realm for more than 10 years. There is a fee to participate. with a barbecue dinner by Harvey’s BBQ, starting at 4:30 p.m. People will have the option to dine in on the main campus or take their food to-go from the West Campus, located at 35 Elm Ave., Elizabethtown. The meal will feature pulled pork, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, a dinner roll and a drink. A food stand will open at 5 p.m., followed by an auction preview. “Our live auction will be Friday, starting at 5:30,” said Lindsay Norris, director of development and community relations. “We’ll have vacations, experiences, themed baskets, class baskets and more at the auction.” An expanded online auction will run through noon on Saturday, she said. Saturday’s celebration will begin at 11 a.m. “Saturday will have more of a homecoming feel,” shared superintendent Jared Griest. “We’ll have a Kids Fest with Touch-a-Truck from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and then we have a number of different athletic events happening during the day.” Games will include JV and varsity volleyball, as well as two varsity soccer matches. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Chosen Brew Coffee Truck and a food stand operated by the high school will serve food and drinks. The highlight of Saturday’s activities will be a Celebration Program, beginning at 4 p.m. in the school gym. “This will be a one-hour program for people to celebrate the 50 years of the school,” Griest said. “We’re collecting ‘50 Stories of Mount Calvary’ right now, and we’re going to use those stories to talk about how God has been faithful to the ministry of the school.” From 5 to 8:30 p.m., a variety of food trucks will be on-site, and the soccer games will be held, with a homecoming celebration between the two games. The evening will conclude with a drone show above the soccer field. Proceeds from the event will benefit the ministry of the school and will provide financial assistance to students. “We serve about 775 students in preschool through 12th grade,” Griest said. “We’re one of the largest Christian schools in central

Labor Day Auction Posted day of care for a hospice patient. Activities on Sept. 5 will also include a plant auction, showcasing hundreds of plants donated by local greenhouses and florists, and a tool auction, featuring new and gently used power and hand tools donated by construction companies and community members. On Sept. 7, the specialty auctions will include a sports memorabilia auction, featuring collectibles from regional, state, and national sports legends; a quilt auction, featuring hand-made Amish quilts, quilts crafted by volunteer groups, and gently used quilts in a variety of styles and sizes; and the continuation of the plant auction. In addition, a high-end auction will offer luxur y vacations , f ine
jewelr y, handyman services, handcrafted items, and experiences. Throughout its history, the Labor Day Auction has grown through the generosity of local businesses, donors, volunteers, and the Amish community. This year, the event is supported by more than 80 sponsors. All proceeds will go directly to helping Hospice & Community Care provide hospice and palliative care services, as well as grief support through the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, to patients and families throughout the region.
