815 Bruce Ave., Mount Joy, invites the community to a free showing of the movie “I Can Only Imagine” at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1. The movie will be shown in the church parking lot, so attendees should bring lawn chairs or blankets. Seniors and individuals with physical disabilities are welcome to sit in their vehicles in the parking lot and view the movie. Free refreshments, including hot dogs and popcorn, will be provided. An alternative movie and child care will be available for children. In the case of inclement weather, the movie will be moved indoors.

Eight gardens in the borough of Marietta - including five within one block - will be featured on the seventh annual Marietta Garden Tour on Sunday, Sept. 9. The self-guided tour will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine, offering tourgoers inspiration for the end of summer and autumn season. Proceeds from the tour will benefit the ongoing restoration of the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., Marietta. Tour chairperson and Marietta Community House board member Lauralee Baker described it as a classic walking garden tour with everything from tiny to larger gardens and both sunny and shaded spaces. At the property of Audrey and Jeremy Pombo, guests will find themselves in a shaded refuge of relaxation dotted with mature evergreens and trees. “We like to say it’s a little oasis back here, because you don’t really expect it,” Audrey said. The backyard garden features several tiers that the Pombos appreciate particularly when entertaining. Wisteria stretches from the property edge to the side

Chicken barbecue meals will be served from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. People are welcome to eat at the show or take advantage of a drive-through option. Separate prices have been set for meals and for half-chickens. Organizers encourage individuals to purchase tickets in advance from any Lions Club member or at the following Elizabethtown locations: Cocker’s Towing, 355 Hershey Road; Donnie G. Boyer and Company, 112 S. Market St.; Gruber Upholstery, 505 N. Market St., Suite C; Custom Auto Repairs and Sales, 2327 S. Market St.; and Sloan’s Norlanco Pharmacy, 428 Cloverleaf Road. Only a limited number of barbecue tickets will be available on the day of the event. A new addition this year will be the presence of several local food trucks, each offering a variety of food and beverages for folks to purchase. Tacos, burritos, empanadas, rice and beans, waffle burgers, macaroni and cheese, and hand-dipped ice cream will be among the menu options. Beverage sampling will also be part of the day’s festivities. Rock ‘N’ Roll Time Machine will perform live music during the event. The Manheim-area band specializes in oldies and classic rock from the 1950s, ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s and has been playing together since 2000. Individuals who would like to enter a vehicle in the Cruise-In may visit www.etownpalions.org or call 717-3675449 or 717-333-9695 to register in advance. Dash plaques will be given to the first 150 entrants. Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded in various categories, and registered participants will be entered to win door prizes as well. Event-day registration and check-in will open at 8 a.m. Lions Club member John Lerch emphasized that all vehicles - any size, age, or condition, stock or modified, and even works in progress - are welcome to enter. An awards ceremony is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. Awards will be presented based upon the participants’ choice, the club choice, and the favorites of several sponsoring businesses. Lerch said that as always, the purpose of the show is to raise funds for the various causes that the Lions support in the Elizabethtown community. One of the Lions’ main focuses is helping those with vision problems, including those with diabetes, which Lerch said is the leading cause of blindness today. Student leaders of the Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) marching band were excited to be partnering with the school’s Mini-THON organization, which supports Four Diamonds at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. “(The) theme (of the show) follows a child going through cancer,” explained Megan Lyle, marching band president and brass music section leader. The seven-minute fall drill, themed “This World of Words and Meanings,” will utilize four pieces of music to represent four stages of a child’s journey with cancer. The pieces will also symbolize the qualities represented by each of the four diamonds, acording to a story written by Christopher Millard, a young cancer patient in whose memory Four Diamonds was founded. “Appalachian Spring” by Aaron Copland will represent strength, and the second movement, “String Quartet in F Major” by Maurice Ravel will symbolize honesty. Courage will be represented by “Baba Yaga” by Modest Mussorgsky, and “On and On and On” by Wilco will be symbolic wisdom. On the field, the more than 50 members of the band will perform a drill that will tell the story along with the music. “The drill starts with a lot of soft, curved lines and interchanging swirls,” said Rebecca Ressel, band vice president and brass marching section leader, who added that the opening has a bright, happy feeling. “As the drill moves on, it becomes sharper and more angular and the show gets darker,” added Ressel. According to student director Sebastian Clemmer, by the second movement, audience members will detect that there is trouble. “By the third piece it is very harsh,” said Clemmer. Katy Arnold, spiritual life director, public relations coordinator, and percussion section member, was quick to point out that there is a moment of hope in the third movement when the music returns to the opener for a measure. Clemmer noted that although the third piece ends with the child dying, sadness does not prevail. “The end of the fourth movement is calm and uplifting (because) there’s a chance for redemption,” Clemmer said. Lyle explained, “The fourth movement follows the theme of (an afterlife). It’s really the beginning of something better.” Some of the lyrics to “On and On and On” will be sung by pit section leader Abby Francis. ber Kaite Graybill will play the child, and Hillary Zink will play cancer, performing with a saber. “In the beginning all five color guard are dressed like children with teddy bears,” explained Arnold. Ressel added that the color guard members will then remove their flowing dresses to reveal tight black suits, which they will wear until the final movement when they will don white gowns. “They begin by representing a child in its innocence,” said Lyle. “The toll cancer takes on a (a child’s life is symbolized by the black outfits when that) innocence is ripped away. In the fourth movement, (the white gowns represent the) afterlife.” A Chinese lantern will be released to symbolize the soul’s journey to heaven. Lyle noted that the partnership with MiniTHON is an attempt to do something meaningful as a school community. The band leaders hope to create educational and fundraising opportunities for Mini-THON at football games and at the LCHS exhibition show. The band will perform in the Manheim Township, Ephrata, and McCaskey high school’s showcases, as well as its own. The marchers practiced the drill for three weeks in August, meeting the evenings of Aug. 4 through 9 and 21 through 23, as well as during band camp, which was held from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Aug. 13 through 16 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug 17. CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health and the Library System of Lancaster County will present the third annual Brush Twice-ADay Challenge, a free educational program designed to encourage children to create and maintain healthy oral hygiene habits. The 10-week initiative will begin on Monday, Sept. 10, and continue through Monday, Dec. 10. It is open to all children and families throughout Lancaster County. Families interested in participating may pick up materials at any of the 17 public libraries throughout Lancaster County or visit the library’s Bookmobile. The Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, will hold the program “Staying Safe as We Age” on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 6 p.m. The program is the second in a three-part Personal Safety Series at the library. Wayne Silcox will give the presentation, which is designed to improve situational awareness, promote self-confidence, and restore trust in instincts, while not increasing the fear of crime victimization. It is not a selfdefense class. Silcox served as Chief of Police and emergency management coordinator at Millersville University for 25 years. While working at Millersville, he represented the Lancaster County Police Chiefs Association on the City/County Human Relations Commission. In addition, he served as director of Public Safety for Elizabethtown College and worked for both the Elizabethtown and Rehoboth Beach police departments. Silcox holds a Bachelor of Science in secondary education social sciences from Elizabethtown College and a Master of Science in criminal justice

For Marilyn Hobday, founder and chairperson of the Heart of Lancaster Art and Craft Show, ensuring that each of the artists makes his or her own work is crucial. Each applicant must submit a detailed report on how his or her products are made in order to make sure that the show’s selection is an honest representation of handmade arts and crafts. Many of the 200 exhibitors are from the local area, with others traveling from all along the East Coast. Forty-five of the juried artists are brand new to the 2018 show. Fifty artists will be demonstrating how their items are made, such as newcomer Topaz Martofel, who uses balloons to create entire unique structures and rooms. Basket weaver Joan Betzold and photographer Keith Grebinger have been selected as this year’s featured artists and will be highlighted in the free magazine available to patrons at the show’s information booth in aisle one. Betzold hails from Bel Air, Md., and has been a basket weaver and weaving teacher for more than 25 years. She

Grebinger, who was born and raised in Lancaster, fell in love with the art of photography while attending Manheim Township High School and has more than 35 years of experience in the field, including shooting in 47 states and eight countries. His love of nature is reflected in his landscape photography. Another important factor in planning the show for Hobday is having artwork at a variety of price points available for patrons - many of whom have been attending since the show first began. In addition to perusing quality arts and crafts, attendees may purchase a variety of food and enjoy live music by Over Easy, a Lancaster-area trio specializing in light pop favorites. At the information booth, folks may enter to win drawings for gift cards. Winners will be announced every hour. “I love the show. It’s like a new

show for me every year when I go,” remarked Hobday. “This is our 31st anniversary, and that’s just unbelievable to me.” Hobday and other organizers are also celebrating the fact that Heart of Lancaster has once again been named one of the Top 200 Best Shows in the Country by a magazine for crafters. “We’ve had really good attendance and quality vendors. They have a thousand other shows they could go to, but they choose us,” Hobday reflected. “It’s all about the community. It’s free, and we love that everybody can come and enjoy it.” Each year, a local charity is chosen to receive donations from the event. A donation box will be set up for those interested in donating toward this year’s nonprofit organization, the Columbia Animal Shelter. The shelter was the dream of the late Judy McKonly, who passed away in 2017. Her family has set out to fulfill that dream and McKonly’s wish to save the lives of at-risk animals. The End of Prostate Cancer will join Urology of Central Pennsylvania to host the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk on Friday, Sept. 21. The goal is to create Generation ZERO - the first generation of men free of prostate cancer. Aaronâ€™s Acres Camp program held an Alexâ€™s Lemonade Stand fundraiser on July 18 at Weis Markets in Manheim and at the Lancaster Shopping Center near A.C. Moore. The campers raised a total of more than $554 for Alexâ€™s Lemonade Stand. The participants are part of the Aaronâ€™s Acres Acts of Kindness Program (Triple AOK), which allows adolescents and young adults ages 13 to 21 with developmental disabilities to give back to others rather than just being recipients of services. During each Triple AOK twoweek camp session, campers attend the recreational program in the morning and are involved with seven community service projects in the afternoon. Recent projects included

She is the daughter of David and Renee Alshouse. Lindsay graduated from Conestoga Valley High School and plans to major in fashion design at Drexel University. She was the historian for her schoolâ€™s National Honor Society chapter and volunteered for school and church activities. She also completed an internship. SBMEF is the national scholarship trust of ABWA and provides educational grants and scholarships to women pursuing their undergraduate and graduate degrees as well as ongoing professional development. The Wheatland Conestoga ABWA chapter has awarded more than $119,000 in scholarships.

GEARS Sets Schedule GEARS has posted its schedule of programs and activities. Unless otherwise noted, separate costs have been set for GEARS members and for nonmembers. Discover Dance, a class designed to encourage younger children to express themselves through creative movement and ballet, will be offered on Tuesdays, Sept. 4 to Oct. 9, in the lobby at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. The class aims to help dancers develop body awareness, gross motor skills, rhythm, and flexibility. Classes will be from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. for 3and 4-year-olds and from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. for 5- and 6-year-olds. Katie Carter and Shaye DiPasquale will instruct. Power Yoga, for people age 16 and up, will be offered on Tuesdays, Sept. 18 to Dec. 11, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Carpenter Chapel at Masonic Village, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown. The class will focus on strength, balance, and flexibility. Deep Water Workout, for people age 14 and up, will be offered in Patton Pool at Masonic Village on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays, Sept. 11 to Nov. 15, from 7:15 to 8 p.m. Instructed by Dave Rosensteel, the class will challenge the whole body to improve muscle tone, core strength, and cardio fitness. Participants will use water exercise equipment to enhance the workout, and they should feel comfortable wearing a flotation belt. A Splash Bash for people of all ages will take place at the Masonic Village Patton Pool on Friday, Sept. 14, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Attendees should bring a swimsuit and a towel.
