Planning A Successful Food Truck Event By Dayna M. Reidenouer
When the Mountville Fire Company (MFC) reluctantly canceled its annual carnival in May, it turned to food trucks to make up the lost revenue. “Food - that’s what a lot of people come (to the carnival) for,” related Peter Taraborelli, MFC public information officer and firefighter. Due to the short notice and the safety guidelines in place
at the time, the food truck event included primarily carnival vendors and was operated as a drive-through. Still, the turnout was encouraging. “We wound up having a successful event. We raised $13,000,” Taraborelli said. The 2019 carnival generated $18,000, so MFC opted to host a second food truck event in July to make up the shortfall. “We wanted to capitalize on the fact that people were still See Food Truck pg 4

Teenager Transforms Rocks Into Works Of Art By Francine Fulton
When most people look at a rock, they see just that - a rock. For Ashley Morgan, 14, a rock is actually a canvas on which she can paint a miniature work of art. Ashley, who is entering her freshman year at Donegal High School, enjoyed coloring as a small child as a fun way to pass the time. “When I was little, my mom used to print out pages for me to color and draw,” Ashley said. “About two years ago, I started painting on rocks. My mom wanted some (painted rocks) for her garden, and after I painted some, I found more and painted more.” The rocks, featuring various images and designs, began to get attention from neighbors, who offered Ashley a fee to paint rocks for their gardens as well. “I started selling them to people on my block,” said Ashley. “Once they See Teenager pg 2

A Way To Honor Your Grandparents
The invitation artwork included a dark background with tiny stars bringing color to the top half of the page. A fluid script announcing the title of the event was juxtaposed against a blockier sans-serif typeface for the details. The invitation read in part, “Your absence is requested at this year’s non-auction event.” The Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, will hold a one-day fundraiser on Friday, Aug. 28, for 24 hours. During that time, area residents are requested to enjoy a special stay-at-home time and to donate the money they would have spent at the library’s annual dinner and auction straight to the library. Donations may be made at http://mslibrary.org or by sending the library a check.
“ We are hoping people will stay home with those they love and do whatever makes them happy,” said Milanof-Schock Library director Barbara Basile. “Have a meal … their favorite wine … gather with whoever they are social gathering with. Don’t worry about coming out, getting dressed up, or how much cash you need in your pocket.” Basile said that invitations were mailed to those who have attended past auctions and placed at the circulation desk so those who have not been to prior events will have the opportunity to take part as well. “We canceled multiple fundraisers this year,” said Basile, who referenced the library’s spring golf outing and noted that sponsors, including the Merchandiser/townlively.com, Fulton Bank, and Lanco Federal Credit Union all signed on for the non-event. “We were thinking about how to have an See Library pg 3

wolf because she has wolf-themed things in her yard, “Ashley noted. Ashley obtains the rocks from friends and neighbors and occasionally buys them. Recently a person let Ashley choose rocks from a home construction site. Ashley said that she would also like to expand her line of artistic endeavors in the future. “I want to be able to paint custom Halloween bags and then Christmas ornaments,” Ashley stated. “I would love something to do in the community like a mural that has a lot of detail. I (want to be) able to spread happiness and art in the community. It’s just fun for me.” Those interested in purchasing a custom-painted rock can order one from Ashley in whichever style they choose. “I supply the rocks, or if they want a particular rock, they will bring it to me,” she said. “I will look up a picture or if they send a picture they want, I will sketch it, match the paint color, paint it and seal it.” So far, many of the rocks Ashley has painted for customers feature sports team logos and small animals. Ashley’s future goal is to become a doctor. “I want to be a pediatrician. For art, I want it to be a side thing that I do as a hobby,” she said. “I always wanted to help kids and other people and find a cure for cancer, (but) art will always be with me for the rest of my life.” For more information, readers may email Ashley at laylayanne06@gmail.com. started seeing how (my painting) was getting better, they (shared photos of my work) on Facebook.” This led to even more work for the young entrepreneur. “When my mom advertised one of my rocks on Facebook, a lady messaged me and asked me if I would like to (paint) her fence. She wanted something happy for people to stop by and see,” Ashley recalled. “She knew I was not a professional artist, and she thought it would be a good experience for me.” The fence that Ashley painted, located in Elizabethtown, features large flowers and birds, including a bright red cardinal. “She gave me an idea of what she wanted. She knew she wanted flowers because it reminded her of happy times, (along with) butterflies and birds,” said Ashley. “The cardinal is in honor of her dad who passed.” “For the fence, I went straight to painting,” she said, explaining that before painting rocks she sketches the image first. “The butterfly and the cardinal and one of the roses was with acrylic paint, but everything else is spray paint.” She added clear sealer to protect it from the weather. “It will be there for a long time,” she added. “I used a clear sealer that is meant for outdoor decorations. I went over it with five cans of sealer so it would stay.” Ashley also recently painted a large boulder in a woman’s yard. The painting depicts a scene of a wolf howling at the moon. “She wanted something with a

“The community has been amazingly cooperative,” said Basile. “They are allowing us to do whatever we have to do to keep things safe.” In fact, the library was back to its regular hours by August. She noted that effective Tuesday, Sept. 1, the library hours will be Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. “We are closed on Fridays and Sundays,” said Basile. Basile noted that past library fundraisers have raised more than $20,000, but she said organizers would be amazingly happy if the non-event raised as much as $6,000. event without bringing people together,” she said. “We felt we needed to do something … to let people to know we’re still here.” The result was the no-show nonauction and an invitation that Basile feels states, “You have come in the past, and we’ve loved seeing you. We were planning a party, but we can’t have one, so…” Calling 2020 a “crazy year,” Basile noted that the Milanof-Schock was among the first libraries in the county to reopen in June. “The governor said we could reopen on June 5,” recalled Basile. “I brought my staff in for training that day, and we were ready to go with porchside pickup on June 8.” Basile said that the staff worked inside the library for two weeks preparing for patrons to return. “We cleaned and set up,” she reported. “We put things away we don’t want people to touch, and we were open for browsing on June 22.” In addition, the library requires visitors to wear masks, and hand sanitizer is available at every station. “Every time someone uses a computer, we wipe everything down,” said Basile, who noted that hightouch areas are sanitized hourly and that computers sport disposable covers. Books are dropped off outside and quarantined for four days before they are returned to the shelves. Programming has been outside “picnic-style,” according to Basile. “Bring your blanket and sit with your family,” she said. “Six feet away is another blanket. Keeping programs outside has allowed us to never turn anyone away.”

The Lickity Split truck will often park in front of the contact person’s home. -Make sure the street or driveway is wide and straight so there is room for the truck. -Check for water/electric requirements. The majority of food trucks are self-contained, but some are not. -Provide a menu in advance so customers can plan ahead and build excite-
ment for their order. -Consider offering preorders for safety. -Use duct tape or chalk to mark the ground so customers can stay 6 feet away from each other. -Ask customers to approach the window one at a time. -Masks should be worn by customers to protect food truck employees, who are required to wear masks. -Schedule enough people to help in areas like greeting guests, removing trash, and helping with parking. -Bring some fun to it. “This is such an awesome way for a community to build connection with each other,” Landis said. “My favorite part is seeing people engaging and connecting with each other, and that’s what people have been missing this summer. Food is always a great way to bring people together.”

However, MFC is considering making a food truck fundraiser a regular part of its schedule beginning fall 2021. “People really do love food truck events,” Taraborelli remarked. “Lancaster County seems to be the mecca for some unique food trucks.” While organizers cannot command good weather, folks who want to host food trucks - whether one or a dozen - can take specific steps to make sure their event is beneficial to everyone involved. Danielle Landis is the event manager for New Holland eatery Lickity Split and the scheduler for its food truck. She is also a member of her homeowners association (HOA) team that arranges for food trucks to participate in popup events. “I’ve learned a lot about how to make it go well from both perspectives,” Landis said. Landis suggested that prospective
food truck hosts consider two things as they begin planning: Will the event be successful for the community itself, and what will make it a good event for the business? Hosts need to have some organizational skills, as a food truck event involves more than contacting a business and asking it to sell food on a residential street or in a parking lot. It is important to get an idea of what types of food will be of interest to neighborhood residents. For example, a dog treats vendor would not be relevant at an event in an apartment complex with a nopets policy. Additionally, organizers need to make sure to thoroughly spread the word. Yard signs, mailbox posters, Facebook groups and events, the NextDoor app, and local media are all ways to advertise a food truck event. With those plans at the ready, folks may reach out to vendors. The more specific the request, the better, Landis said, adding, “We have gotten a lot of messages from people who say, ‘Come out to our neighborhood. We have a lot of kids,’ (but that doesn’t tell us much).” Typically, a vendor needs to know the address where the event will be held, the number of houses or residents in an area, the desired dates and times, and what

Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, will offer two classes this fall. “Mastering the Monologue” will take place on Tuesdays, Sept. 8 through Oct. 13. One of the most intimidating aspects of auditions can be the monologue. In “Mastering the Monologue,” local director and actor Kevin Ditzler will guide attendees through what they need to know to make an impact at their next general audition. Partcipants may join via Zoom for this small group class that will allow them to work privately, perform for an audience, and receive real-time feedback. This class will provide weekly 60-minute group sessions for performance and one weekly 30-minute session for each student with Ditzler for in-depth one-on-one work. Participants will leave the class with two auditionready monologues. Acting and Scene Study will be offered on Thursdays, Sept. 17 to Nov. 5. This class is for committed,

Starting from existing foundations of technique, participants will consider physical life, emotional life, and character development through text analysis, improvisation, and warm-up exercises with paired scene partners to explore the actors’ instrument in a safe environment. Managing artistic director Jim Johnson will teach the class. Class size will be limited to 12 to 16 actors. A final showcase is possible, but the emphasis will be on discovering strengths and weaknesses, not performance. There is a registration fee for each class.
