Pick up a ticket for a chicken barbecue on Saturday, Sept. 26, and you’ll not only have a delicious lunch or dinner. You’ll also support local veterans. The American Legion Riders Chapter 185 will host a chicken barbecue on the 26th with pickup starting at 9 a.m. and meals available until sold out. The barbecue will be held at 560 Clay Alley, Mount Joy. Each meal will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, baked beans, applesauce, a roll and butter and a bottle of water. Baked goods will also be available for a small donation per item. “We encourage people to purchase their tickets in advance to guarantee their meal,” said Stacey Miller,

Take a walk through Mount Joy, and you can travel through history. Many of the buildings in town played important roles in the past, and the Mount Joy Area Historical Society wants to highlight them. The society updated its SelfGuided Walking Tour, building on an idea that began years ago. “The first published self-guided tour of Mount Joy was called ‘An Architectural History Tour of Mount Joy & the Village of Florin,’” said Linda Eberly, vice president of the historical society. “It was compiled by Lancaster County Heritage and the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County for the Sesquicentennial of Mount Joy in May of 2001. It featured 15 stops around town, with only three of those stops on Main Street.” In 2004, the historical society collaborated with Main Street Mount Joy to create a 17-stop self-guided walking tour along Main Street. “The late Vera Albert, who was our president at the time and a retired teacher in the Donegal School District, was the driving force behind this,” Eberly shared. “Many of her students recall taking a walking tour of Mount Joy as part of the curriculum she taught in their fourth-grade class at Grandview Elementary School. … She had done the research and used the information she had from her class tour for the brochure. So really, Vera had done a Mount Joy walking tour way before there was any brochure.” While the historical society has used the same brochure and information for the tour since 2004, the design was recently updated and a numbered map and information on the history

The riders group participates in Memorial Day parades in Mount Joy and Manheim and supports other fundraising initiatives and benefit rides across other posts and among the Lancaster and Lebanon community. “ T hey have prepared meals for Ronald McDonald House in Hershey and participate in the Adopt-AHighway program,” Yeagley said. “In addition, they also host other fun activities within the post like bingo, hold monthly meetings and coordinate group rides.” This year’s New Year’s Day ride will be the 18th year for the event, with proceeds supporting the everyday needs of veterans at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. “In February 2026, we donated $42,000, and to date since the inaugural event, we have donated close to $400,000,” said Yeagley. The riders are always looking for new members, Miller said, adding, “While our membership is small, we do mighty things across our community and continue to seek other rider enthusiasts to join us. Fo l l o w i n g a re c e n t report by the Pennsylvania Department of Health that measles cases are on the rise, Giant and Martin’s has announced that measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccines are available at its in-store pharmacies. The MMR vaccine can prevent measles, a highly contagious disease that can lead to serious complications, particularly in young children and unvaccinated individuals. The CDC recommends two doses, which provide approximately 97% protection. Subject to state regulations, Giant and Martin’s pharmacies in Pennsylvania can vaccinate customers age 8 and up without a prescription if they meet the eligibility requirements.

Pharmacists are available to review vaccination status with patients, provide vaccine education, administer vaccines to eligible patients, and help patients determine if they need catch-up vaccination. Lancaster Area Sewing Network (LASN) will present “Processing Flax” on Monday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. at Lancaster Friends Quaker Meeting, 110 Tulane Terrace, Lancaster. Cloth, and the thread with which to sew it, all begin as fiber. Today’s fabrics come from a wealth of fibers, many of which are synthetic, but before the 20th century, sewing thread and fabric were made of natural fibers and could even be homemade. Flax was the typical fiber Lancaster County families used to make their own sewing thread and cloth. Flax comes from a plant that was once a commonly grown crop in Pennsylvania. During the upcoming presentation, Tina Mickley will discuss flax culture and retting and will demonstrate the processes of breaking, scutching and hackling flax fiber, along with how that fiber becomes linen thread and, finally, linen cloth and sewing thread. Mickley, a spinner and weaver with a fine arts degree in painting, became interested in historic textiles and their production more than 45 years ago while working as a costumed interpreter at a national historic site. Since 2018 she has grown and processed her own flax, along with volunteering at area historic sites demonstrating spinning, weaving, and flax dressing. She is an independent contractor at the Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, where she regularly interprets 18thand 19th-century textile production. Mickley helped to develop and teaches the museum’s Sheep to Fabric and Field to Fabric classes. She also collects antique spinning wheels and helped plan two Antique Spinning W heel Symposiums in Pennsylvania. Guests may register for the program on arrival. There is a fee for nonmembers, payable by cash or check only. L A S N ’s 2 0 2 6 t h e m e is “Sewing Revolution,” with all monthly meetings touching on an aspect of the topic. LASN is a group for people who love to sew. Its members range from beginners to intermediate hobbyists to professional dressmakers. The group’s main focus is fit-

of the town were added to the publication. “In 2024, Tristan Bair, a junior member of the historical society, created markers for eight of the stops on the tour as part of his Eagle Scout project,” Eberly said. “He chose to do the signage project to expand the historical society’s connection to the town and its history, taking visitors beyond the walls of the society building. Each of the plaques has a QR code that takes you to the historical society website, where you can see more pictures and read an expanded history of the stop.” Stops on the tour include the Gerberich-Payne Shoe Company at 240 W. Main St., which was built in 1919 and was the official manufacturer of Boy Scout shoes from 1938 to 1951, resuming again in 1971 until the factory closed in 1974. It now houses a senior living facility.

Wa s h i n g to n Ho u s e , located at 78 W. Main St., was believed to have been built in 1832 and served as a hotel and restaurant until the mid-20th century. The former George Brown Cotton and Woolen Mills, located on the 300 block of East Main Street, is now home to Sassafras Terrace Apartments. Other stops on the tour include the ship statue at 93 E. Main St., the former Mount Joy Hall at 6-8 W. Main St. and the former home of Clarence H. Schock, a coal and lumber dealer who established the Schock Independent Oil Company (SICO). Located at 37 E. Main St., the building now houses St. Mark’s Ministry Center. On Sunday, Aug. 30, the church will hold a baptism service in Chiques Creek, and the congregation will participate in the rescheduled Stars & Stripes event in Mount Joy on Saturday, Sept. 12. Communion is held on the first Sunday of each month, and a potluck luncheon takes place after the service on the third Sund ay of the month. Coffee and fellowship is offered after the weekly service. The church holds nondenominational services on Sundays at 10:15 a.m. “ I t ’s a B i b l e - b a s e d church,” said Pete Parke, a member of the leadership team. “It’s not full of opinions and conjecture.
