Looking back at the abrupt changes he dealt with last March when COVID-19 restrictions temporarily closed the state, Spencer Browne, now a rising senior at The Stone School in Lancaster, was philosophical. “When something as shocking as a

pandemic happens, there are many different ways to (react),” noted Spencer. “I think it consumes a lot of people and they are stuck in shock about the world being so different they can’t do anything … but we saw it as an opportunity to help people who are in that stasis.” Spencer, along with his family, which consists of his parents, Jen and Sean Browne, and his brother, Jayden, home from college in Minnesota, joined forces with volunteers Michelle Simon and Deb Miller and fellow students Jayna Ribner and Henry Willis to form the Lancaster chapter of Pandemic of Love. The grassroots, nonprofit organization connects those in need with those who have something to give. It has more than 650 volunteers nationally and, as of late June, had matched nearly 190,000 donors with those in need for $25.1 million in transactions. See Pandemic Of Love pg 2

A year ago, Jenn Knepper, founder of the Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Lancaster Alternative Gift Fair, was looking forward to moving the fair from its location at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster to The Junction Center in Manheim. This year, Knepper is talking about the online fair that the organization will hold on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. During that time period, those wishing to give an alternative gift may visit www.giftsthatgivehope.org and choose an organization to donate to. “You’re purchasing a gift for somebody, and we will send you a card with a description of the gift you purchased,” said Knepper, who added that the fair is the perfect vehicle to find a meaningful gift, especially for those who do not need anything in particular.
Knepper suspects that recent occurrences may have changed perspectives on meaningful gifts. “I think through this (pandemic) people may have realized that stuff really isn’t important, other than basic necessities,” she said. “(Instead of) all the stuff we might have thought was necessary, we can refocus on what’s important.” See Gifts That Give Hope pg 3

Spreading A Pandemic Of Love
Outdoor exercise is encouraged during COVID-19 restrictions as a way to stay healthy and positive and maybe even increase defenses against disease. Benefits of exercise may include lower cholesterol and blood pressure, while improving strength, balance, and coordination. Social distancing is usually easier when exercising outside, as well. Kristen Holloway, founder of the Facebook page Day Hikes of Lancaster County PA, has always been a hiker. During the pandemic, she has been trying to hike at least weekly alone and with family members. “When I lived in San Diego, I found this book of day hikes of San Diego County,” said Holloway, who set herself a goal of visiting all the trails in the book while she lived there. After returning to her native Lancaster County, Holloway decided a Facebook page could offer other avid hikers the same kind of information she had found in the book - trails that offer beautiful
scenery along with varying degrees of difficulty. “I knew there were all these great hikes, but I knew there were some I didn’t know about,” said Holloway. “I was looking for one place that had all the good hikes, so I wanted to put something together so that people would know what’s out there.” Trails that are good for a variety of activities include the Enola Low Grade Trail, which can be accessed from a number of points in the county - the Turkey Hill Trail Head in Manor Township, Sigman Road in Pequea Township, and Fairview Road in Strasburg Township. The trail has a crushed stone surface and is a favorite of walkers. The White Cliffs of Conoy in Marietta are located along the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail, which can be accessed from Columbia, Marietta, or Bainbridge. Holloway said it is a paved trail often used for running and biking in addition to hiking. The trail, which runs along the Susquehanna River, features some abandoned buildings and the cliffs, actually remnants of a limestone quarry. “It’s a pretty overlook with the white cliffs, and you’re walking along the railroad tracks,

Pandemic of Love was founded in Florida by Shelly Tyglielski. “She started it for her community,” said Jen, who noted that the idea spread quickly and soon became a global network. Jen shared the story of the nonprofit’s founding with her family, and by late May, she had contacted Tyglielski through www.pandemicoflove.com. By early June, all the Lancaster volunteers had been trained via an online forum, and the Lancaster County chapter was ready to let the public know of its existence. Jen lauded Spencer and Jayna and their expertise in social media for helping to get the word out. “I really credit the young volunteers with making this as successful as it’s been,” said Jen. “They know how to tag the right people. We are fortunate to have young volunteers who know
what they’re doing.” Thanks to the volunteers’ hard work, by early July, the Lancaster Chapter had matched 30 donors with recipients. “What was shocking in the beginning is that I had so many donors who were interested,” recalled Jen, noting that at one point she had more donors than people in need. “I was so impressed with that,” she said. Jen explained that Pandemic of Love focuses on putting together the puzzle pieces of donors and recipients. “We look at what someone wants to give and try to connect people who are a good fit for each other,” she said. “So if (someone can’t pay a) bill for $150 and we have someone who has $150 to give, I connect those and then they pay the bill directly.” In addition to utility bills, the organization has

Manheim Christian Day School, 686 Lebanon Road, Manheim, will host a drive-through pork barbecue fundraiser on Friday, Aug. 21, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. or until sold out. The menu will include pulled pork from Peters’ BBQ, a roll, chips, applesauce, dessert, and a beverage. There will be a fee per meal. There will be no handling of money during the drivethrough. A dropbox will be provided for customers to leave payment in the form of cash or checks made payable to Manheim Christian Day School. For short hikes, Holloway recommends Ray’s Woods, 44 Laurel Drive, Holtwood, and the Farmingdale Trail in Noel Dorwart Memorial Park, 408 Parklawn Court, Lancaster. For more moderately challenging hikes, Holloway recommends the loop at Steinman Run Nature Preserve, 215 Stump Road, Pequea, and combining trails at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, 100 Museum Road, Stevens, where she has spent up to three hours hiking. Because Holloway lives in Penn Manor School District, many of the trails she has discussed on the page are in that area. For a good workout, she heads to Kelly’s Run Nature Preserve, reporting that that the trail is a loop of nearly 4 miles with hilly terrain. Kelly’s Run can be found at 199 Street Road, T397, Holtwood. Holloway said that hiking has been a family tradition. “My parents took us hiking a lot as kids,” she shared. “It’s fun, but it’s a good way to get exercise.” When Holloway hikes with her children, she likes to visit the Lancaster Conservancy Trout Run Nature Preserve, 215 Stump Road, Pequea (Holtwood). “Trout Run is great for those who like to play in the water,” she said. For green and shady hikes, Holloway recommends Lancaster Conservancy’s Climbers Run Nature Preserve, located off Frogtown Road, Pequea. Other scenic trails on Holloway’s list include Shenk’s Ferry Wildflower Preserve, 857 Green Hill Road South, Conestoga, in Martic Township and House Rock Nature Preserve, 370 House Rock Road, Pequea. Holloway appreciates the beauty of the outdoors during solitary ventures. “I like to hike by myself,” she said. “It’s meditative, so it’s time to be in my thoughts and be in nature. You take more in when you’re by yourself.” The Facebook page Holloway founded allows her to combine her interests in hiking and photography. “I have a list of 25 more hikes to investigate that aren’t on the page (yet),” she noted. For those who are averse to the summer heat and crowded trails, she recommends hiking in the early mornings before the sun is high and the parking lots fill up.

fielded requests for help with groceries, fuel, and medication. She said gift cards for those items are tremendously helpful. One recipient had a service dog that was ill and needed help with vet bills and to purchase special food. When a donor has food to give away, Jen turns to the caterer Scarlet Runner to help distribute it to the recipients. Even as the state has reopened, Jen said that many residents continue to be affected economically for a variety of reasons. “Some people have not been able to go back to work because their employer is not going to reopen, but also a lot of people (have) anxiety (that) is preventing them from going back,” she explained. Because there are only two chapters in the state, Jen and the other volunteers have fielded requests from tiny towns as well as from Philadelphia. They ask donors if they have a preference for keeping donations local. Spencer noted that Pandemic of Love is unusual because it is completely run by volunteers who do not actually handle the donations. “Pandemic of Love has no overhead costs,” he explained. “There’s no money involved in the matching process. People come to us and we document everything.”

Bible2School To Launch In Mount Joy The Bible2School program will be available for second-graders at Donegal Primary School this school year. Florin Church of the Brethren, a new Bible2School member, has taken the lead in activating the program under the guidance and organization of Clint Adams. Labor Day activities at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown, will take place on Monday, Sept. 7, beginning at 4 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine. Attendees may bring their own blanket or chair. The purchase of a general admission ticket will include the following activities. Self-guided tours of the Star Barn Village, which includes the historic and fully restored 1877 Star Barn and its associated outbuildings; the fully restored 1860 Ironstone Ranch; and the 1844 Herr’s Mill Covered Bridge, will be available. Dehmey Wins MOAA Scholarship
GOTR Season Announced Girls on the Run (GOTR) is accepting registrations for the upcoming GOTR and Heart and Sole season, which will begin on Monday, Sept. 21. At GOTR, social-emotional learning is the cornerstone of the award-winning, research-based lessons for girls in third through eighth grades. GOTR supports girls in identifying and processing their emotions. The GOTR programming seeks to empower girls to nurture their physical and emotional health, find strength in their connectedness, and build confidence and resiliency. Following current COVID-19 guidelines, GOTR-trained coaches and dedicated staff are ready to adapt program delivery as the school year approaches. GOTR has made several modifications to the program to ensure the health and safety of coaches and participants. In the event of unexpected or planned closures, GOTR will shift in-person programming to virtual practices. Coaches will be provided with specific resources, training, and support to prepare them to seamlessly deliver the program virtually. The virtual program will engage and connect socially and emotionally and will provide physical activity as well. As guidelines allow, GOTR will
also plan to meet safely in small groups as it connects at alternate sites such as parks, community centers, churches, and schools. Additional modifications that have been made to the GOTR and Heart and Sole program delivery include reduced team size for safer gathering; reduced duration from 10 weeks to eight weeks to accommodate a later start date; flexibility in times and days of practices; a flexible season start date; and modifications to adhere to social distance guidelines and minimize exposure. Each girl will receive her own bag to hold her individual materials for the season. GOTR coaches will receive updated training and additional modules that include social inclusion, COVID-19 safety, and trauma informed coaching. Abigail Dehmey, a 2020 graduate of Elizabethtown Area High School, was awarded the Lancaster Chapter Memorial Scholarship from the Lancaster Chapter Military Officers Association of America (MOAA). The $1,000 scholarship is provided for a Lancaster County high school senior planning to attend postsecondary education and who has an immediate family member who has served, or is currently serving, in the U.S. military. Selection for this award is based on the individual’s scholastic record, extracurricular activities and community service with emphasis on demonstrated leadership abilities. Dehmey was co-valedictorian for her high school graduation and has served as president of the National Honor Society and treasurer of Student Council. Safe Communities, with support from the Lancaster Cares fund and in collaboration with the Spanish American Civic Association, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, and Joining Forces for Children, has launched Standing Together, a bilingual campaign focused on educating adults in the community about child safety in four areas where COVID-19 isolation can expose them to increased risk: sexual abuse, living in a home with substance abuse, mental health, and COVID-19. Parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents and other adults in the community may learn to recognize a child’s distress when they see certain behavioral indicators
and to reach out with care and support, even if they are not certain of what is happening. In addition to distributing educational information on child safety during COVID-19, Standing Together includes a series of bilingual interviews with experts on each of the four safety areas on WLCH radio, 91.3 FM in Lancaster and 100.3 FM in York. “Lancaster County does not have a (drug addiction treatment) facility for disadvantaged people,” said Dave Cope, president/CEO of Recovery Works Inc., which is working to change this by building an 80-bed treatment facility. Recovery Works was incorporated in September 2018 and was granted nonprofit status in August 2019. A LancasterLebanon SCORE mentor assisted in that process. If all goes well, the new facility could receive its state license and be open within 16 months. “It’s a very detailed process to get a license to provide drug and alcohol treatment … a major undertaking,” Cope remarked. “But what is motivating us is nearly 70,000 people (nationwide) die of overdoses (annually). Pennsylvania is near the top of the list. It doesn’t show any signs of lessening, and during COVID, it got worse.” The planned facility will be open to anyone, regardless of gender or ability to pay. Recovery Works will take Medicaid clients and those without insurance, and walk-ins will be welcome. “One of the largest deterrents of seeking help is (not having insurance),” Cope explained. “Rehab is a frightening, painful experience, so it’s hard to get (addicts) to go. Removing as many roadblocks as we can is important to get them into treatment.”

Recovery Works will offer a 90-day inpatient rehab program, which will include detox and medically assisted treatment, as well as a follow-up recovery house program, where clients can transition back into society. Cope said the organization hopes to start a job placement service for people in recovery and to provide job training through other local organizations. “It’s important to help them get back into the community,” he added. “We don’t want to serve just one part of the needs they have.” The program planning process has been led by Recovery Works vice president William Charles “Charlie” Folks, LCSW, who had a 47-year career at Eagleville Hospital, a 305-bed, independent, nonprofit addictions and behavioral health treatment and educational organization in Montgomery County. Folks is well connected in the addiction and recovery community in Lancaster County. Other treatment agencies in the area have been consulted as well. “We get a lot of good affirmation from them,” Cope said. “That’s been very encouraging to have that support.” Before all that can happen, however, the facility needs to be built. Recovery Works has purchased a bucolic 7-acre property in Providence Township that has the necessary zoning. The preliminary work to begin construction is nearing completion. To break ground, Recovery Works needs to raise $3 million to cover the project’s cost. Cope noted that Community First Fund will lend the money, but it requires a 20% cash equity. The goal is to raise $600,000 within three months. “We’re hoping we can find 600 people who can write a $1,000 check,” he commented. Contributions of any size are welcome, and investment opportunities are available as well. Income from the rental of a business on the property will be used to pay interest to investors, Cope said, adding, “We would love to fund everything by gifts, but we have to look at every opportunity to raise funds that we can.” While Recovery Works is not affiliated with any church group or religious organization, much of its philosophy is faith-based, and support from churches is welcome. Individuals may volunteer with Recovery Works. Currently, Recovery Works is searching for an architect or engineer willing to help with the project.
