Summer Reading offers family fun BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“It is so important for kids to keep reading over the summer,” said Jan Betty, director of children and youth at the Milanof-Schock Library. “I always encourage parents to let their children read books they enjoy,
even if they’re not on their reading level. Reading or rereading books that they love fosters that love of reading for life. And if you can read, you can do anything!” Betty encourages people to sign up for the Summer Reading Program at the library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, See Reading pg 4

Donegal honors Class of 2023 onegal High School honored the Class of 2023 during a graduation ceremony on June 6 in the high school stadium at 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. Three students of the 220 in the class were selected to speak at the ceremony. Valedictorian Emma Myers talked about not taking shortcuts to success, quoting “No Easy Way Out” from the “Rocky IV” soundtrack, noting, “This song has been a personal anthem of mine for many years.” She advised her fellow students to search for the light in the darkness and to put fear aside when facing adversity. “I now see that while I was stuck, the people beside me in those moments encouraged me to reconsider my route instead of recklessly forging ahead,” she stated, urging her classmates to look within themselves for strength in times of doubt. “We are capable of winning regardless of a setback.” After graduation, Emma plans to attend Thomas

Celebrate with Marietta Fireworks BY CATHY MOLITORIS
If you go to see Marietta Fireworks this year, be prepared to be wowed. “This is the biggest show we have done yet,” said Gary Schatz, who has been organizing the event since 2018. “We have scripted the show to be 35 minutes plus.” Schatz explained that the show can be “scripted” because the majority of it is now electronic, meaning the fireworks are programmed and shot off with a remote. The show will also still include some manual fireworks
as well, he noted. “ We’ve been working on transitioning to more electronics over the past three or four years, and this is the second time we’ll be doing a lot of electronics,” Schatz stated. The fireworks will begin at approximately 9:15 p.m. on Saturday, July 1, in War Memorial Park, 344 E. Walnut St., Marietta. “We say ‘approximately’ because it’s completely dependent on the conditions,” Schatz explained. “If it’s not quite dark or it’s raining, we will have to adjust that time until it stops raining.” See Fireworks pg 3
