To celebrate being at its current location for 20 years, the MilanofSchock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, is throwing a B i r t h d a y B a s h fo r t h e w h o l e community. The 20th Birthday Bash is set to take place from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, outside on the library grounds. Admission is free. “ We hope people come out and spend as much time as they can,” said Milanof-Schock Library operations coordinator Kim Beach. Free cake and ice cream will be served, and additional food will be available to purchase from local church and civic groups, including french fries from the Mount Joy
Members of the Southern Pennsylvania Amateur Radio Club (SPARC) will be participating in the national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise on Saturday, June 22, from 2 to 7 p.m. and Sunday, June 23, from 10 a.m. to noon at 1715 Breneman Road, Manheim. This event is open to the public free of charge. For more than 100 years, amateur radio (sometimes called ham radio) has allowed people from all walks of life to experiment with electronics and communications techniques, as well as provide a free public service to their communities during a disaster, all without needing a cellphone or the internet. Field Day will demonstrate ham radio’s ability to work reliably under any conditions from almost any location and create an independent communications network. Susquehanna Heritage will offer a geology trail bike ride on Wednesday, June 19, from 1 to 3 p.m. on the Northwest River Trail. Participants will meet at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. The ride will be led by a guide from Susquehanna Heritage, including important historical sites as well as some of the trail’s popular features. In addition to cycling along the 190-year-old canal towpath and former railroad, bicyclists will see landmarks such as the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, the ColumbiaWrightsville Bridge, Point Rock Tunnel, the Cenozoic-era Chickies Rock Formation, the abandoned pig iron furnace complex, Chiques Creek, and the Susquehanna River. Participants will
take a break at the Furnace Road Day Use Area at Chickies Rock County Park. At a number of stops, the guide will tell about the history of the sites. Following the tour, participants may continue to ride on the trail; return to the start point with the guide; or, for an additional fee, arrange for a shuttle, kayak, or canoe to take them back. There is a registration fee. Adults age 65 and up and youths will receive a discount. Advance registration is required. SICO Foundation voted to award $400,000 to the library building fund in memory of Schock. In spite of those generous donations, Kim Beach noted that the building committee of community volunteers was still tasked with managing a large capital campaign, as well as making numerous decisions regarding the new library, in order to make it a reality. “They did a beautiful job, and the building has won awards for its design,” praised Basile. Those building committee members included Jane Beach, Ethel Foley, C. Bernerd Grissinger, Marianne Melleby, Sharon Roberts, and John Weidman. At the 20th Birthday Bash, each of those volunteers will receive special recognition, along with the 1999 board of directors, which included Grissinger, Jane Beach, Foley, Melleby, Debra Eberle, Maureen Albert, Linda Campbell, Carl Hallgren, and Robert Stitt. Additionally, the Milanof-Schock Library will receive an official citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for its outstanding work. “This is a diverse community, and we appeal to all ages with our programs and services,” stated Basile. “We are here for the community, and we really believe we are the community’s living room. Heisey, who is a Mount Joy native and a Donegal High School graduate, also sang at the grand opening celebration of the Milanof-Schock Library at its present location on May 16, 1999. Current library executive director Barbara Basile noted that the library had previously been located in what is now Higher Grounds Café at 22 E. Main St., Mount Joy, since 1965. Many longtime library patrons have fond memories of attending children’s programs in the small upstairs space at the former location. Upon expanding to a larger location, Basile said, the library, then known as the Mount Joy Library, was tasked with serving the five local municipalities instead of just Mount Joy Borough - at its new site on Anderson Ferry Road, which opened to the public in February 1999. To account for this increase in geographic reach, it was decided that the library should have a new name. It was renamed the Milanof-Schock Library in honor of major donors Anne Milanof and Clarence Schock. Milanof began volunteering shortly after the Mount Joy library opened in 1965 and eventually became president of the board of directors. She left $450,000 to the library building fund when she died in 1992. Schock was an 1881 graduate of Mount Joy High School and started his own oil company, which eventually became The SICO Company. An honor guard from Boy Scout Troop 35 will march down Locust Street and display the United States flag at noon, after which the national anthem will be played. The annual Thunder on the River car and motorcycle show will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 15, rain or shine. Vehicles will be lined up along Locust Street between Second and Sixth streets and in the Locust Street Park. Admission is free for spectators. Parking is available in Janson Park, 650 Cherry St., Columbia, and in the public parking lot in the 100 block of Locust Street. Food will be available for purchase from local restaurants, churches, nonprofit groups, and vendors. Oldies music will serve as a backdrop for the fun-filled day. All makes and models of cars, trucks, and motorcycles are welcome to participate. Show organizers will award 100 trophies, including one for best of show and the Barry Doutrich Memorial Trophy. You might want to wear earplugs as more than 500 cars, trucks, and motorcycles will roll into town for the annual car show and rev their engines in unison for a few minutes after the national anthem at noon. “We started this tradition a few years ago, and it’s become a highlight of the show,” said Paul Resch, vice president of the Columbia Lions Club, which organizes the show along with the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce (SVCC). “A lot of people think that’s how the car show got its name since the sound of 500 engines at full throttle sounds a lot like a thunder storm. The truth is, we came up with the name first, and then a few years ago someone had this idea. It was perfect.”

Reed Chosen As Liederkranz Princess Following a 30-year tradition, the Lancaster Liederkranz has named its princess for the 2019-20 club year. Shelby Reed was crowned as the club’s the newest ambassador on May 11 at the Lancaster Liederkranz Maitanz. She will represent the Lancaster Liederkranz locally and around the MidAtlantic area. She will also compete for the title of Miss German-America for the Philadelphia region on Saturday, June 22, at the Vereinigung Erzgebirge in Warminster. Tickets may be purchased at the gate on the day of the event. The members of the court for Miss German-America represents the greater Philadelphia area by attending various banquets, anniversary events and German cultural activities. Their year begins with a variety of Oktoberfest celebrations and culminates in riding as dignitaries in both the Philadelphia Steuben Day Parade and the New York City Steuben Day parade. Over the past 10 years, several Miss Lancaster Liederkranz nominees have gone on to be selected as Miss GermanAmerica of Philadelphia (Kornflower
Queen) as well as members of the court. This year’s current queen, Paxton Beck, and last year’s first princess, Kristina Simon, were both endorsed by the Lancaster Liederkranz. The Lancaster Liederkranz is a growing German heritage club that supports education and cultural events, some of which are open to the public. The club’s members represent a wide range of ages.

World Juggling Day from pg 1 On Saturday, June 15, members of the Lancaster Throwback Juggling Club will host a free event to celebrate World Juggling Day. The 10th consecutive event will take place at Long’s Park on Harrisburg Pike in Lancaster from 1 to 4 p.m. on the lawn near the amphitheater, weather permitting. Signs and red balloons will direct attendees. Area residents are invited to stop by for free juggling lessons and to try out various circus skills. There is no fee to participate, and some juggling props will be available for use. A juggling workshop will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. and will teach the basic juggling pattern and some tricks for advanced learners. The worldwide event has been organized by the International

The Gretna Theatre Kids Series, set for Saturday mornings this summer, will feature five productions based on popular children’s stories. The hourlong shows will aim to deliver real-life lessons in a child-friendly environment. Giant Food Stores has announced a $3 million donation to more than 2,200 public and private schools through its A+ School Rewards program. The annual customer-driven school fundraising program helps local schools raise money for educational programs, field trips, scholarships, playgrounds, and more. Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg was the overall top earning school for the 2018-2019 school year receiving $16,851.
The Elizabethtown Area Senior Center, located in the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown, invites area seniors to its upcoming programs. The center, a service of GEARS and the Lancaster County Office of Aging, is open regularly on Mondays through Fridays. Karen Emenheiser (formerly Karen Avers) has written her first book, “Unbecoming: How to Find the Courage and Confidence to Live an Amazing Life.” In the book, Emenheiser shares her 20 years of experiences and observations as a therapist, life coach, mother, and military spouse. She also draws from Scripture to offer up the courage to take risks and live unashamed. Originally from Mount Joy, Emenheiser has lived all over the United States and in England as a military spouse. She has a master’s in social work and has worked as an in-home family therapist for families with emotionally disturbed children. After marrying, she began serving military families returning from combat deployments. She also became a part-time certified personal trainer and group fitness instructor. For the last three years, Emenheiser has been a therapist for the 3rd Marine Corps Regiment in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, where she lives with her husband and two daughters. Owner Jim Roberts opened a Western Auto Supply Company location with his wife, Sharon, on June 5, 1974. They chose to open the business in Mount Joy to be closer to family and because they liked the town and believed the business would be successful there. The original business, called Jim Roberts Western Auto, was located at 18 W. Main St., Mount Joy. As the business grew, Jim and Sharon needed more space and purchased the former Murphy five and dime building next door at 14 W. Main St. in 1982. In 1985, the business added a fourbay garage, which broadened the scope of automotive services that could be offered. Jim Roberts Western Auto became Jim Roberts West Main Auto in 2006 after the Western Auto Supply Company warehouse closed. Today the business sells and installs tires, batteries, shock absorbers, starters, alternators, and exhaust systems. U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker, in conjunction with the office of U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey, will lead a ceremony honoring area Vietnam-era veterans with a 50thanniversary commemorative pin. Veterans from the 11th Congressional District are invited to attend and be honored at this event. This ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 15, at 8 a.m. in the library at Columbia Junior/Senior High School, 901 Ironville Pike, Columbia. Veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time between Nov. 1, 1955, and May 15, 1975, regardless of station location, and who did not receive a pin at the March 29 event at Lancaster Airport will be eligible to receive a lapel pin at this ceremony. Veterans’ family members and veterans from all periods of service are invited to attend the
ceremony. Toomey co-sponsored legislation to permanently designate March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day to recognize the bravery and sacrifice of veterans who served during the Vietnam War. The bill has been signed into law by President Donald Trump. Following the recognition ceremony, Smucker, joined by members of Toomey’s staff, will participate in the unveiling of a portrait of retired Lt. Gen. David L. Mann, the 10th alumnus of Columbia High School to rise to the rank of general or admiral in the United States Armed Forces. Cyclists will depart at 7:50 a.m., and walkers and runners will step off at 8 a.m. Participants may complete 14 miles along the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail, finishing at Fisherman’s Wharf, the Falmouth access point off Route 441. Several exit points are available for individuals who would prefer to complete a shorter portion of the trail. Comfort stations with beverages and snacks will be offered at five points along the route. Transportation back to Post 1306 will be provided for participants with the exception of bicyclists. The top three individual and team finishers in both walking and biking categories will receive awards at a ceremony at Post 1306 after the race. Free refreshments and a chicken barbecue meal will be available for participants. “We had 74 participants last year,” Androsky said. “This year we hope to go over 100.” The annual walk is one of several ways that Post 1306 reaches out to veterans. The post also hosts an annual catch-andrelease fishing event for veterans at Lake Aldred and sponsors quarterly outings for the veterans from the Lebanon VA. Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development will join forces with Faulkner Chevrolet for Schreiber’s ninth annual Golf Classic. This year’s event will take place on Monday, Oct. 7, at Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lititz. The Schreiber Center is a therapeutic rehabilitation center that provides critical services to families with special needs. Organizers have set a goal of raising $20,000 for the PA Hero Walk this year. Androsky said that after raising $2,000 at the first Columbia Hero Walk, organizers upped their goal to raising $5,000 at the second walk and just missed it by raising $4,600. Similarly in year three, the event raised $9,600 - just barely missing the $10,000 goal. However, Androsky said that the winds shifted last year as organizers set a goal to raise $15,000, and the event raised more than $16,000. Businesses and individuals who would like to support the Hero Walk but are unable to participate may mail donations or drop off contributions earmarked for the Hero Walk at Post 1306, 250 N. In the middle of a tense showdown Thursday between two of the best Class 5A teams in the state in Donegal and Bishop Shanahan during their PIAA quarterfinal game, and with both teams scoreless through four and half innings, the Indian’s Sierra Neiss found herself in a bit of a jam. Bishop Shanahan had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the fifth and their power hitter at the plate. Neiss worked the count to 2-1 and on the fourth pitch of the at bat Hanna Keiper turned on it and sent a line drive down the left field line. Unfortunately for her, Emma Miller was positioned out there and made a fantastic catch on the run to end the inning and more than likely saved three runs in the process. After that it was all Donegal. The Indians rode the wave of momentum
to the tune of five runs in the sixth, finally figuring out Bishop Shanahan ace Devon Miller on the way to a 7-0 victory. With that win Donegal advanced to the semifinals and a meeting with Penn-Trafford, the third seed out of District Seven. Up until that breakout inning the Indians only had one hit, a single by Madeline Gohn in the fourth, but did have an opportunity to put some runs on the board in the second when Miller walked the bases loaded with two outs. She was able to retire Donegal’s Miller on three pitches, however, and end the threat. In the Donegal sixth, and with confidence high after Miller’s heroics in the field, Stephanie Reider (1-4, RBI) took the third pitch she saw and drove it over the left field fence for a 1-0 lead. Neiss then walked and Gohn (3-4) sent courtesy runner Jenna Park to second on a single into center. Following a Morgan Creek strike-
out, Summer Steffy (2-3, 2RBI) made it 2-0 when her single brought Park home from second. Then, with runners on second and third, Lydia Miller (1-3, RBI) laid down a perfect bunt that scored Gohn for the 3-0 lead. Morgan Biesecker (1-4) followed with a RBI, two-out single after a wild pitch allowed Steffy to cross the plate to make it 5-0. Two heads up plays in the sixth kept Bishop Shanahan in check when Creek got the force out at third on a one-out grounder with runners on first and second and Biesecker got a pickoff at first from behind the plate to end the inning. Another wild pitch and a RBI single by Steffy in the seventh ended the scoring for Donegal. In the first round of the PIAA tournament, the Indians met up with Connelsville and found themselves befuddled by pitcher Mia

Twin Valley led off the fifth inning with a walk followed by a bunt with both runners reaching base safely. A two-run double by Alyssa Genery put Twin Valley in the lead and another in the sixth, again by Genery, stretched it to 4-1. Donegal got one back in the seventh, opening with a single by Steffy (2-3) who advanced to third on a ground out by Cheyenne Livelsberger. A fielding error brought her home to make it 4-2, but a strike out and a put out ended the game.

Ministry Plans Truck Rally Transport for Christ will hold its 38th annual Truck Rally on Saturday, June 22, at the Lebanon Expo Center, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon. The event will begin at 11 a.m. with a large parade of trucks. Drivers bringing trucks should arrive between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. There is no charge and no preregistration. Spectators may show up early to watch the trucks arrive. Breakfast will be available at 8:30 a.m. in the Expo Center kitchen.
The Truck Rally will also include food and business vendors, children’s activities, barrel train rides, Marian and Friends Ventriloquist, and two benefit auctions: a general auction and a model truck auction. No consignments will be accepted. Evening activities will begin with a barbecue meal at 5:30 p.m. Reservations are necessary. Separate prices have been set for a halfchicken or pulled pork sandwich and for a chicken leg and thigh. Each meal will also include a baked
potato, a dinner roll, applesauce, a beverage, and a cookie. The evening program will feature a gospel concert by the Kingsmen Quartet from Candler, N.C. A freewill offering will be received during the concert. Attendees should bring lawn chairs. All animals at the Truck Rally must be on leashes. Only service animals will be allowed in food lines. Attendees should not display political signs, and ATVs, gators, bicycles, and skateboards may be used with permission only. Skateboards and bikes may
not be taken inside buildings or used near trucks during the rally. On Sunday, June 23, the 23rd annual Rally Celebration will take place. The Kingsmen Quartet will be featured during a worship service, and a buffet lunch will be available at noon. Tickets are needed for the lunch. Railroad Museum Joins Program The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will join museums nationwide in the 10th annual Blue Star Museums program, which provides free admission to the nation’s active-duty personnel and their families this summer. The 2019 program was launched on
May 18, Armed Forces Day, and will end on Monday, Sept. 2, Labor Day. The free admission program is available for those currently serving in the United States Military - Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard - as well as members of the Reserves, National

Kingsbury Selected As CEO William L. Kingsbury has been named as CEO-elect for the Masonic Villages by the board of directors. Kingsbury will become CEO for the Masonic Villages on Sunday, Dec. 1, upon the retirement of Joseph E. Murphy, who has served as the senior executive for the organization since 1983. Kingsbury will be responsible for the day-to-day management of all the charitable activities and functions of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, which includes, in addition to the Masonic Villages, the Masonic Library and Museum of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation, the Masonic Blood and Organ Donor Program, and the Masonic Charities Fund. He will oversee the delivery of program services; budgeting and financial reporting; facilities management; information technology and systems management; development, advancement, and fundraising; human resources; and legal and compliance. In addition, he will manage the development and implementation of strategic planning processes and initiatives to ensure alignment with goals and core mission values for the organization. Kingsbury earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration and finance from Villanova University in 1992. Kingsbury returned to Villanova and earned his juris doctor from the university’s School of Law in 1995. Upon graduation, Kingsbury joined the law firm of Peck, Young & VanSant, Philadelphia, and was promoted to partner in 1997.

Kingsbury served in a variety of leadership positions, including chair of the business department and a member of the executive committee. Kingsbury is a member of Melita Masonic Lodge No. 295 of Philadelphia. He is a past director of the Berwyn Paoli Area Little League and has served on many other for-profit and nonprofit boards. He resides in Valley Forge with his wife and two children. His office is located in Elizabethtown.
