Awise person once said, “You can never have too many books.” While the origins of this phrase might be debatable, one thing is certain: You’ll find plenty of options for stocking your bookshelves when the Friends of the Milanof-Schock Library hosts its annual book sale.

The event will take place Thursday, June 18, through Saturday, June 20, at Donegal High School, 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. On Thursday, a preview and purchase event will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. with an admission charge. There is no charge to attend on Friday, June 19, when the sale will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., or on Saturday, when the sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Saturday, all books will

be one price per bag, and people are encouraged to bring their own bag.

“We have over 30 categories of books,” said Lora Jones, a member of the Friends group. “We have

separate prices for paperbacks and hardbacks, and we have specially priced items as well.”

Genres include biography, cookbooks, fiction, gardening, history, mystery, romance and sports.

The Summer Solstice Festival will return to Mount Joy on Saturday, June 20, and this year’s event will be bigger than ever, said Jen Angeles, vice chair. The festival will run from noon to 4 p.m. along Main Street from Marietta Avenue to Market Street.

“We have over 100 vendors, nonprofits, food vendors and entertainers participating, which is nearly double what we had last year,” Angeles said. “The event has grown incredibly quickly, and we’re excited to bring even more people, businesses and organizations together.”

Hard work is happening at Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA), and the organization will be recognized for its efforts at the Elizabethtown College Partnership Award Breakfast. The nonprofit will also open its doors to the public for its annual Recovery Art Show, happening Friday and Saturday, June 19 and 20.

At the June 10 breakfast, DSAA will receive the Civic Impact Award. The organization was nominated for the honor by one its student volunteers, Lana Rapp.

“She has been coming to volunteer with us for several semesters,” said DSAA executive director Stacy Emminger. “We have been partnering with Elizabethtown College for several years. We provide an opportunity for students to get the volunteer hours they need for their Community Based Learning classes. We also host interns each semester.”

Emminger added that DSAA has also completed several projects with various classes at the college, has participated in panels on campus and has worked with communications classes on video projects.

“It’s been a wonderful partnership,” she said.

The Civic Impact Award celebrates a partner that has demonstrated exceptional civic engagement collaboration, creating meaningful student learning and community outcomes. DSAA was singled out for its commitment, engagement and shared investment in the partnership with the college.

Riding Toward Hope

Hop on your bike or just come out and enjoy the scenery when Brittany’s Hope hosts the fifth annual Biking for Brittany. The event will take place on Sunday, June 28, with rides beginning and ending at the Star Barn at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. The first ride will take off at 6:30 a.m., followed by additional starts at 7 and 7:30 a.m.

“There are three events to challenge all levels of riders: The Metric Century (62 miles), Mid-Distance (45 miles) and Metric Half Century (34 miles),” said Dana Myers, director of charitable giving for Brittany’s Hope. “Riders will take off from the beautiful Star Barn and follow one of three awesome routes and will travel through the rolling hills and picturesque landscapes of Elizabethtown, Hershey and surrounding counties.”

Proceeds from Biking for Brittany will help Brittany’s Hope continue its mission of aiding orphaned and abandoned children through adoption grants and humanitarian support for the organization’s partner children’s homes in Vietnam, Kenya and Ethiopia.

“The show consists of various art projects created by our clients who come to our Art Heals classes. Our clients are individuals in early recovery,” Emminger said. “There are paintings, sculptures, masks and other projects that will be displayed. The purpose of the art show is to spread awareness about the recovery part of addiction. Most individuals do recover and heal. Art is just one of the tools they use to heal.”

She explained that Art Heals classes are taught by an individual in recovery who has a Fine Arts degree from Pennsylvania College of Art and Design.

“All of the lessons in art class tie into recovery in

some way,” Emminger said. “Art Heals is also a favorite of our Elizabethtown College students. They all enjoy interacting with the clients and working on the art projects. It isn’t unusual for us to have anywhere from five to 10 students in art class each Friday during the school year.”

DSAA is a deeply personal organization for Emminger. She lost her son, Anthony, to addiction in 2014 and began hosting a parent support group in her living room in 2015.

Over the years, the organization has expanded to become a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, providing programs including 12-step yoga and offering resources such as a clothing bank.

DSAA opened a second office at Liberty Place in Lancaster earlier this year.

It’s not open to the public like the Mount Joy location is, but it’s used for staff members from DSAA’s re-entry program to work and meet with clients in a location closer to court and the prison.

“We’re up to seven staff in our re-entry program,” Emminger said, noting that the program is just one aspect of DSAA’s services. “DSAA provides support to individuals, families and loved ones impacted

by addiction. We’re a safe space to come to get help, find treatment, get linked to services and to get support. All services provided are confidential and free of charge. Don’t go through it alone.”

While she’s honored to receive the Elizabethtown College award, Emminger said her greatest satisfaction comes from delivering services to people who need support. She hopes the public will come out for the art show, where displayed art will be available to take home for a donation.

“We usually have the art show at the beginning of the year, but we decided to have it coincide with the Summer Solstice event this year,” Emminger said, referring to an event happening in downtown Mount Joy on June 20. “We believe the two together will make a wonderful Saturday out.”

The Mount Joy Area Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting on Monday, June 15, at 7 p.m. at the Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy.

Mary Nolt, the historical society’s secretary, will review the research she did for friends who bought an old schoolhouse in East Donegal Township, known as the Rock Point Road School. She began with old deeds and worked backward to verify the building’s purpose and location.

Nolt will also present a brief history of the common school movement in Lancaster County and the beginnings of education at the Rock Point Road School, including subjects taught, class trips in the winter, spelling bees, and illnesses that affected

the children. Additionally, she will discuss the origins of Lancaster County schoolhouses in a broader context, relating how a sense of community developed during the years the schools operated.

Refreshments and tours of the museum will be available following the program. The meeting is free and open to the public, and donations will be accepted.

Mount Joy Rotary Honors Students of the Month

The Donegal High School Counseling Office and Career Resource Center has announced the Mount Joy Rotary Students of the Month for May. The honorees are Reese Graham-Miller and Ryan Beck. Students of the Month are honored by members of the Mount Joy Rotary during one of the club’s monthly luncheon meetings.

Copeland Named to Dean’s List

Bethany Copeland from Mount Joy was named to the dean’s list at Bob Jones University for the spring semester. The dean’s list recognizes students who earned a 3.00 to 3.74 grade point average during the semester.

Copeland is a sophomore studying nursing.

Society, Science Olympiad, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and peer tutoring. She is also involved in a variety of musical activities, including marching band, Rhythm Singers, Tri-M Music Honor Society, and Donegal Performing Arts.

After graduation, Reese plans to attend college to study astronomy and astrophysics.

Ryan is the son of Christopher and Rebecca Beck of Mount Joy. He is a member of the Math Honor Society, National Honor Society, peer tutoring, and Spanish club. He also participated on the varsity baseball team during his junior year.

After graduation, Ryan plans to attend college to study mechanical engineering.

“We have a very strong juvenile/young adult section, and we have a lot of graphic novels,” said Friends member Diane Rice. “We have a strong science fiction section, too.”

This year, puzzles will also be for sale, along with CDs and DVDs.

“We’re on target to have more items for sale this year than last year,” Rice said.

Proceeds from the book sale help to fund operations of the library, and the Friends group is grateful for the wide range of support it receives for the fundraiser.

The Friends collect books year-round and sort them in a shed behind the library, accumulating hundreds of banana boxes packed full for the sale.

“The performing arts group from the high school helps lift all of our boxes and takes them at the high school from the hallways to the tables,” Rice said. “We’re also really grateful for the custodial staff at the high school and members of the Lions Club and the Rotary who help move books as well.”

Added Jones, “Over the years, it’s really become a nice commu

nity effort to get this sale set up.”

Rice noted that volunteers go through all donations, ensuring only high-quality items are sold. Anything the group can’t use is donated to the Mennonite Central Committee.

Rice invites anyone looking for a bargain to come to the sale, which will be set up in the lobby, hallway and cafeteria area of the high school.

“This is very well organized, and we do our best to have the categories marked and easy to find,” she said. “There’s a good flow, and we have a ton of space to browse.”

Visitors will find a wide variety of artisan vendors and small businesses offering everything from original artwork, handmade jewelry, candles and handcrafted home décor to charcuterie boards, ice cream scoops and other unique gifts. Wellness-focused vendors, retail boutiques, pet-related businesses and many other local entrepreneurs will also participate in the festival.

“Food is always a big part of the event, and we’re excited to welcome several local favorites, including Iron Born Bistro from Marietta, Spud Muffin food truck, Noel’s Café and additional food vendors throughout the event,” Angeles said.

Stillpoint Studio will offer chair massages. There will be face painting and interactive vendor activities, and several local nonprofits will also participate, giving attendees a chance to learn more about organizations serving the community.

“One unique addition

this year is a flash tattoo artist who will be set up inside 2FAB Weight Loss & Fitness Studio at 70 E. Main St.,” Angeles said. “She will be offering firstcome, first-served flash tattoos throughout the day, and a portion of her proceeds will be donated back to the nonprofit, making it a fun way to support the event while getting a little new ink.”

Entertainment will include Skye the Fae, who will roam throughout the event and interact with guests. Tom Foolery the Bard and Opal Whiptail the Mermaid will be available for photos and visits throughout the day. Strolling magician and storyteller Doc Yoder will be part of the festival, along with live music and additional entertainment.

“One of the most anticipated attractions is our live unicorn, who will be visiting from 1 to 3 p.m. near the information tent,” Angeles shared. “Guests will have

the opportunity to stop by, meet the unicorn and take photos.”

The festival is an initiative of the Summer Solstice Collective, a nonprofit founded by Collette Wagman.

“The idea for Summer Solstice Collective grew out of a desire to bring people together in a time when communities often feel divided,” Angeles said. “What started as a seasonal celebration evolved into something bigger, a way to create a welcoming space where people from different backgrounds, cultures, beliefs and life experiences could connect, learn from one another and celebrate community.”

As the vision developed, organizers wanted the event to have a greater impact beyond a single day of festivities. The nonprofit was established to promote inclusion, education and community engagement, but it also gives back by donating profits to local food banks and hungerrelief programs. Part of the proceeds from this year’s festival will also support the PA Breast Cancer Coalition.

“Our goal is simple: Create meaningful community experiences while helping neighbors in need,” Angeles said.

“As we’ve grown, we’ve been incredibly grateful for the support of local businesses, vendors, volunteers, entertainers, sponsors and community members who have helped make this event possible,” Angeles said. “Every year, the event becomes a little bigger, reaches a few more people and creates new opportunities to bring our community together while giving back to those in need.”

She hopes people will come out for a fun afternoon.

Biking for Brittany always receives positive feedback from both participants and spectators.
