Friends’ Book Sale To Support Library By Chelsea Peifer
The Friends of the Milanof-Schock Library will host a used book sale on Thursday, June 13, through Saturday, June 15, at Donegal High School (DHS), 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. Area residents are invited to shop the selection of thousands of used books, as well as DVDs and CDs. Book genres will include fiction, nonfiction, reference, cookbooks, gardening, home décor, health, history, children’s, Young Adult, Christian fiction, science, biography, and more. All proceeds from the book sale will directly benefit the general fund of the Milanof-Schock Library. A preview night will run from 6 to 8 p.m. on June 13. An admission fee
will be charged to shop only on that evening. Organizers emphasize that no one will be admitted to shop prior to the 6 p.m. start time. Volume buyers are encouraged to bring boxes or bags. No admission will be charged during book sale hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 14, and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 15. Shoppers will have the option of stuffing a bag with merchandise for a set fee all day on June 15. In addition to reading material, the sale will feature a food stand offering hot dogs, pork and beef barbecue sandwiches, soft pretzels, snacks, ice cream, baked goods, and hot and cold beverages for purchase. LCBC Plans 20th Motorsports Show By Chelsea Peifer

After Cristin Germaine held the third Dare to Dream Single Moms’ Day Out in 2018, she felt a change was in order. “By the end of 2018, I was talking with trusted friends about where to go with Dare to Dream,” recalled Germaine, who felt the Lord pushing her to expand the audience for the next event. “This will be a brand-new venture,” said Germaine of the free re-envisioned event that will be held on Saturday, June 22, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day will be called “Dream BIG!: Ignite Your Passion,” and it will be open to men and teenagers age 15 and up in See Dream BIG! pg 5
In September 2018, Cristin Germaine recorded the theme song for the first Dream BIG! event, which will be held at Calvary Church on June 22. Dream BIG! will include workshops and more to encourage men, women, and teenagers age 15 and up wishing to pursue a dream.
LCBC (Lives Changed By Christ) Church will host the 20th annual Motorsports Show at its Manheim campus, located at 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim, on Saturday, June 8, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year’s Motorsports Show will feature more than 1,000 antique, classic, model, and muscle cars; tuners; street rods; and motorcycles. The event is free for entrants and visitors. All vehicles are welcome in the Motorsports Show, and interested individuals may register a vehicle to be part of the show at http://LCBCchurch.com/ Motorsports. Special guest John M. Clor of Ford Performance, who has authored several books on the Mustang, will present on the history of the Ford Mustang at 10 a.m. in the LCBC auditorium. Afterward, Clor will be in the Mustang Corral to autograph free posters and distribute other free Ford merchandise. Another new aspect of this year’s show will be free oval track remote-control racing for both children and adults. “We’ll have up to eight cars at a time racing one another,” Hershey said. Other children’s activities will include face painting and inflatables. Free coffee and doughnuts will be available in the morning, and free candy, snow cones, and ice cream will be offered starting at 12:30 p.m. Additional food will be available to

According to Hershey, more than 5,000 people attended last year’s Motorsports Show, and it takes a total of 150 to 200 volunteers to run the event. “It’s just exciting with it being the 20th year to know where it came from. Back when it started, it was just a small get-together with some cars and some grills,” Hershey said. “There has been a ton of impact as well, with people plugging into LCBC and other churches after coming to the show, and it’s been really cool to hear those stories over the years.” LCBC Church is a contemporary, seekersensitive church and is currently ranked as the 18th largest church in the United States by Outreach Magazine with a weekly attendance of 17,000. An important part of Dream BIG! will be the workshops, which Germaine noted are specifically geared toward helping people move forward. “One couple (will hold a) workshop on embracing brokenness,” noted Germaine. “(That’s about breaking) free (from) our past to dream again.” The 2019 workshops will include “The Path That Brings Me Back to You - Visioning With God,” presented by Steve and Colleen Adams; “Become Aware of Your Presence,” presented by Dan Armstrong; “Wake Up, Get Up, and Go!” presented by Julia Banks; “Created for Greatness,” presented by the Dash Girls; “Rewind. Remind. Redefine. Peeking at Your Past to Purposefully Be Present for Your Future,” presented by Tabitha Deller; and “Finding Your Passion Through a Side Hustle,” presented
by Jonathan and Denise Ebersole. In addition, a vendor fair featuring up to a dozen vendors will be held during the event. As an example of what can happen when one dares to dream, Germaine shared some of the events that have occurred in her life in the last year. “I was getting my story out and sharing about Dare to Dream,” said Germaine. “God put it in my heart to do a song.” A friend directed her to Eric Copeland, who is president of a music label, and together they wrote a song called “Dream BIG!” that is based on Germaine’s life story. In September 2018, Germaine traveled to Nashville to record the vocals. Grammy winner Jonathan Crone oversaw the recording of the song, which Germaine co-produced with Copeland. A launch party for the song was held in May. “God is doing amazing things,” said Germaine. “I always wanted to sing. I wanted to go to Nashville.” Realizing one of her dreams has inspired Germaine to want to share with others. “Dreaming reminds us of who we are in Christ,” said Germaine. “I want to encourage (attendees) to dream again and dream big!” There is no charge to attend Dream BIG! The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) announced the winners of its 2019 Safety Training and Evaluation (STEP) Awards and recognized its 2019 OSHA Partners on May 1. Representatives from several member companies accepted their awards at the ABC Safety Awards Dinner. The anchor of ABC’s Safety Awards program is STEP, which provides companies a structured approach to benchmark and improve their safety efforts. The goal of the program is to provide an organized approach to ana-
lyze and further develop a company’s safety and loss prevention. Donegal Advances to 3rd Title Game in 5 Years by Vaughn Brown
Donegal’s chance at its third District Three title in five years was put on ice last Thursday when almost the entire slate of games was postponed until Friday in anticipation of bad weather. The lady Indians earned their way into the championship game versus Twin Valley by first downing Northern York 11-3 in the quarterfinals and then beating Waynesboro, in come-from-behind fashion, 9-5 in the semifinals. The title game was played after going to print, therefore the results will be included in next week’s issue. Facing Northern York after a 4-1 opening round victory over Elizabethtown, Donegal pounded out 13 hits and was led by Aysha Gibbs’ 23, 3 RBI effort at the plate and a three-hit outing by Sierra Neiss on the rubber. Striking out eight while walking seven, Neiss did surrender a two-run home run in the fourth
inning which pulled Northern York to within five runs, but the game was never in doubt After Stephanie Reider (2-2, 2RBI) homered into right field on a one-out, 0-1 pitch to put Donegal up 2-0 in the first inning, Neiss retired the side in the top of the second setting the stage for a five-run effort by the Indians in the bottom half of the inning. A single by Morgan Biesecker (3-4, 2RBI) with one out scored Morgan Creek (1-3) and Summer Steffy (1-3) to make it 4-0 while Emma Miller (1-3, RBI) moved into scoring position at second after all three got on base with singles of their own. RBI singles by Gibbs and Neiss (1-4, RBI) put Donegal up 7-0. Following Northern York’s two runs in the fourth, Miller made it 8-2 on a fielder’s choice single that scored Creek from third in the bottom of the fifth before a fielding error allowed Cheyenne Livelsberger (1-2) to cross the plate,
making it 9-2. Gibbs then landed the final blow when her hard ground ball into center brought both Miller and courtesy runner Jordynn Park home. Northern York then added one more run in the sixth. In the ensuing matchup with Waynesboro last Tuesday, Madeline Gohn sent the second pitch she saw into center field during her at bat in the fifth inning, scoring courtesy runner Lydia Miller from first and giving Donegal the lead for the second and final time of the night. Waynesboro had earlier erased a 3-0 deficit with a four-run effort in the fourth, while the lady Indians scored four more in the sixth to punch their ticket to the title game. Neiss pitched another three-hit complete game and sat down 13 of the 34 batters she faced via strikeout while struggling a bit with her control and walking 10. While Donegal racked up 12 hits of its own, it was Waynesboro that made
the most of what it got at the plate, although the Indians’ offense proved too much in the end. With the game scoreless heading into the third inning, it was a hard, two-out single by Neiss (1-3, 2RBI) into center that got the ball rolling for Donegal as both Emma Miller (1-2, RBI) and Biesecker (3-4) came home to give the Indians a 2-0 lead. After an errant pitch hit Gohn (3-3, 2RBI) to load the bases, Julianne Wheeler (1-3, RBI) proceeded to hit the first pitch she saw into right field, scoring Reider (1-3, 2RBI) for the 3-0 lead before Lydia Miller, running for Neiss, was thrown out at the plate to end the inning. RBI singles by Emma Miller, Reider, and Gohn along with a passed ball that allowed Park to score, gave Donegal all the insurance it needed in the sixth to hold on for the victory. TRACK After becoming the first Donegal track athlete to win a District title since the Indians moved to Class 3A, Taylor Nissly still had something to show in the PIAA meet which was held over Memorial Day weekend at
Shippensburg University. The IUP track commit, who plans on majoring in Criminology, picked up two medals to wrap up a stellar high school career. “Taylor currently holds all of the freshman sprint records and also holds all of the varsity sprint school records at Donegal,” commented head coach Gretchen Colwell. “She was also part of the school record 4x400 and 4x100. She is an extraordinary talent that will be missed.” With a freshly minted District Three gold medal in the 400 as well as a silver in the 200, Nissly had a somewhat easier path to the podium during States, so to speak. “Districts was quite an experience because Taylor had an awful head cold to battle while still trying to perform at that level,” added Colwell.

The local charitable giving circle 100 Women Who Care Lancaster County (100WWC) will relaunch its organization with a celebratory evening at Tellus360, 24 E. King St., Lancaster, on Monday, June 10, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The event will serve as an opportunity to introduce new leadership, welcome members’ input and hear from special guests in the community, including Lancaster Mayor Danene Sorace. Lancaster’s 100 Women Who Care chapter was formed in 2015 and has since donated more than $138,000 to nonprofits of Lancaster County. The organization follows the national 100 Women Who Care model for membership and giving, in that women gather three times a year for a one-hour meeting, learn about local charities and donate a $100 check to a charity that the group selects. An end-of-year celebration is held each year, where recipients share the impact made by the group’s donations. The relaunch will serve as an oppor-
tunity for new and current members to share their ideas for the organization’s future growth, as well as meet the new leaders who have joined the planning committee. The committee manages all aspects of the group’s charitable giving efforts. In addition to the evening’s idea and information exchange, guests will hear from three local leaders: Sorace, who will kick off the evening with a welcome, and nonprofit directors Will Kiefer of Bench Mark Program and Tricia Nabors of New Choices. Both Kiefer and Nabors were awarded donations from 100WWC after being invited to present at a quarterly meeting. Each will share how these funds impacted their organizations’ programming and mission. Receives Grants The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has announced various grant awards for new humanitiesbased projects throughout the United States. LancasterHistory’s project to plan for the future development of the Thaddeus Stevens and Lydia Hamilton Smith Historic Site was one of three Planning Grants awarded in the NEH Historic Places category. The Lancaster-based High Foundation has also awarded LancasterHistory a grant for the Stevens and Smith Site planning effort. LancasterHistory anticipates the planning phase of the Stevens and Smith Site project to continue throughout 2019, followed by the launch of a capital campaign in 2020. According to the musical coordinator and event originator Chris Rowles, the event was inspired by 1969’s “Three Days of Peace and Music” in Woodstock, N.Y., which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. “Waystock was a natural connection for Wayside to bring music to the community and bring people together,” Rowles remarked. “We’ve got outstanding local bands lined up for you, along with food, fun, and games. And our family-oriented event benefits a great cause in the Hempfield Area Food Pantry.” “Our congregation goes all out to bless the community and the Hempfield Area Food Pantry with this kickoff-to-summer event,” Fritz commented. “This year, we hope to set a new Waystock record of food collection with the help of many of our neighboring ‘Businesses on Battery’ also filling food boxes. While the event, food, and beverages are completely free, each guest is asked to bring nonperishable food items to help fill our food van for the pantry.” This is the second year for Businesses on Battery, in which the companies located along Stony Battery Road are invited to hold on-site collections for the Hempfield Area Food Pantry. Donegal Society Slates Annual Meeting The Donegal Society will host its annual meeting on Thursday, June 13, at the Donegal Presbyterian Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy. At 2:30 p.m., registration will begin. The meeting will be followed by a dinner. The program will feature the Rev. Dr. Larry Chottiner sharing a talk titled “It Matters: Discerning the Times.” The program will be a look at history’s impact on the present day and on the future. Chottiner was senior minister of the Highland Presbyterian Church in Lancaster, as well as serving many others over the years. He is retired and a member of Donegal Presbytery. The low-impact aquatic exercise class takes the principles and movements of yoga and adapts them to the water environment. An Elizabethtown Basketball Skills Camp for boys and girls entering third through eighth grades will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday through Thursday, June 24 to 27, in the gym at the Bear Creek School, 1459 Sheaffer Road, Elizabethtown. Led by Lee Eckert, EAHS varsity assistant coach, the camp will focus on the fundamentals of basketball, such as ball handling, shooting, passing, defense, rebounding, and post moves. A camp T-shirt is included in the fee. Harry Potter Camp, for youths ages 6 to 13,
has been set for Monday through Friday, June 24 to 28, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the West Donegal Township Building, 1 Municipal Drive, Elizabethtown. Attendees will enter the world of Harry Potter and friends and enjoy activities like quidditch and fantastic beasts. A trip to the Philadelphia Zoo and Adventure Aquarium in Camden, N.J., will take place on Friday, June 21. The bus will depart from the EAHS parking lot at 8 a.m. The zoo offers an animal and exploration trail system with seethrough mesh trails and more room for animals to roam, as well as an indoor/outdoor children’s zoo featuring displays and hands-on learning opportunities. The aquarium features more than 8,500 aquatic species on display, the Little Blue Penguin exhibit, and a Shark Bridge.

A girls’ lacrosse camp for third- through eighth-graders will be held on Monday through Friday, June 17 to 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Field 2 at Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS), 600 E. High St. Coach Benson of the Lady Bears varsity team will instruct the camp, which will help attendees improve on their fundamentals while playing fun lacrosse games with the EAHS players. A T-shirt is included in the fee. Aqua Yoga, for people age 14 and up, will be offered from 6 to 6:45 p.m. on Tuesdays,
MCCS Class Of 2019 from pg 1 On June 1, the Mount Calvary Christian School (MCCS) Class of 2019 celebrated its commencement in the Mount Calvary Family Life Center at 629 N. Holly St., Elizabethtown. The 16 members of the graduating class were Emily Grace Allen, David Jae-Ko Ellis, Catherine Ana Fry, Ambria Nichole Good, Leah Dawn Hawryluk, Josiah Aman Hoffman, Seyeon Kim, Matthew Thomas Kruschinsky, Nathan Andrew Lerro, Tyler Daniel Masters, Ethan Mark Niedwick, Jesse Richard Rutt, Brittney Jean Taylor, Thy Nguyen Le Tran, Alyssa Nichole Turner, and Jin Wang. The commencement ceremony featured guest speaker Dr. Ray Norman, the senior director for World Vision’s global Clean Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) program. Norman is also the author of “Dangerous Love: A True Story of Tragedy, Faith, and Forgiveness in the Muslim World.” Class salutatorian Thy Nguyen Le Tran and valedictorian Ambria Nichole Good both presented speeches. Thy lives in Middletown and is the daughter of Ngan Nguyen and Son Tran. She began attending MCCS during her junior year and was a member of National Honor Society (NHS). Outside of school, she volunteered at her church. This fall, she plans to
attend the University of Minnesota Twin Cities to pursue a degree in chemical engineering. Ambria resides in Annville and is the daughter of Randy and Daphne Good. She attended MCCS since her sophomore year. During high school, she played soccer and participated in the spring musicals. She was a member of NHS, Student Council, and the media and communications club. Ambria also teaches the prekindergarten and kindergarten classes at her church. Her post-graduation plans include attending Grove City College to earn a bachelor’s degree in accounting in order to become a certified public accountant. Ambria described the MCCS Class of 2019 as a “dysfunctionally functional” family. “We’re all very across the board and bring a lot to the table,” said Ambria. “I’m definitely going to miss how close our class is and the small community feel.” Thy echoed those sentiments, adding that she appreciated the positive interactions she had with both teachers and students at MCCS, as well as how her classmates were all very teachable and willing to learn. One of Thy’s favorite educators during her time at MCCS was high school science and chemistry teacher Melissa Risser. “She’s
very caring and cares about how we feel each day,” noted Thy. “And she would answer our questions even if it might not be about something related to the lesson that day.” Senior class adviser Rachel Hodges, who teaches English and literature, was one MCCS educator who made a positive impact on Ambria. “She was definitely our class mom,” Ambria said. “She cared about us, and she challenged us a lot in English - in a good way.” Ambria said that math and science teacher Julie Lamb, whom she had for physics and as the adviser of Student Council, was often a source of calm during chaotic times. “She always seems to have an answer and a game plan and brings us back to where we need to be,” noted Ambria. In addition to commencement, the MCCS Class of 2019 took a senior class trip to Daufuskie Island, S.C., for a week in April and participated in a baccalaureate ceremony on May 22.
