Donegal High School (DHS) senior class president Lauren Stwalley can remember moving to Mount Joy right before the start of first grade like it was yesterday. “Two days before school started, we drove past Donegal Springs (Elementary School), and I saw the playground and was so excited,” said Lauren. “I remember that so clearly, and now we’re already graduating.” Lauren will offer the welcoming address to her fellow classmates and the family, friends, and faculty members in the audience at the DHS Class of 2019 commencement ceremony, which is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday,

Cool spring temperatures can sometimes delay peak strawberry season, but years of experience have meant that the organizers of the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society (HMPS) Strawberry Festival usually hit the sweet spot with the timing of their event. Rainbow ’s End Youth Services (REYS) is preparing to launch LifeSwitch, a new program for middle school students, this summer. REYS program director Jeremy Freimark said that the middle school years are a time
of transition that can leave many students feeling in limbo - missing the routine and security of elementary school and excited for what lies ahead in high school, but unsure where they fit in the meantime. Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community (MHNRC), 3026 Mount Hope Home Road, Manheim, has a strong heritage and fascinating history that the public is invited to learn more about at its 50th anniversary celebration and old-fashioned picnic on Saturday, June 1. The old-fashioned picnic will take place rain or shine from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with meals from Peters’ Barbecue available to purchase. Each meal will include a whole leg chicken, a baked potato, baked beans, applesauce, a roll and butter, a dessert, and a beverage. Takeout meals will be available to pick up via a drivethrough option by entering along Mount Hope Home Road and exiting by way of Cider Press Road. Other family-friendly events will include yard games and live music. A special anniversary service is planned for 1 p.m., with seating under a large tent. “If you’re a history buff in the community, you’re really going to want to come to this,” said director of advancement Kris Wilson. “Not only does Mount Hope have a rich history in its foundational roots, but the Mount Hope nursing facility fills a special niche in the community - one that is instrumental in caring for the community’s aging population.” MHNRC has 50 beds and has been named a five-star, deficiency-free skilled nursing facility by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Although today MHNRC is a nonprofit ministry of Grace Point Church of the Nazarene, Wilson explained that the home got its start as the Mount Hope Dunkard Brethren Church Home in 1969 after the Dunkard Brethren Church purchased the Mount Hope Meetinghouse in 1965 for the purpose of establishing a home for the elderly in the community who were in need of care. MHNRC’s original structure - the Mount Hope Meetinghouse - was built in 1910 by the Chiques congregation as a place of worship. Ephrata Grace Point Church of the Nazarene purchased the home from Dunkard Brethren in 2006. Guest speakers who were prominent visionaries for creating the nursing facility will highlight MHNRC’s formation and history at the 50th anniversary service, as well as share heartfelt
testimonies. “Our theme (for the service) is faithfulness,” Wilson said. “Mount Hope’s entire mission and vision is serving seniors regardless of their ability to pay or not, and that is really an upside-down way of thinking when it comes to long-term care.” According to Wilson, more than 85 percent of MHNRC residents are on Medicaid, and the retirement home gave more than $1 million in charitable care last year. “Everything that does come in goes right back (to) the residents,” Wilson explained. Being able to provide quality, affordable care to the low-income and disabled elderly population is something that Wilson emphasizes is only made possible through the support and generosity of the community. Wilson said that the famous saying “It takes a village to raise a child” can be applied to the mindset at MHNRC. “An entire community of people must interact with Mount Hope for this unique vision to grow and, at the same time, fulfill a great need for affordable nursing care.” The anniversary celebration will also include remarks from Manheim Mayor Scot Funk, and Rep. Mindy Fee will present MHNRC with a citation for serving area seniors for 50 years. GEARS Sets Schedule projects will include weaving, string art, birdhouses/feeders, toys, and sewing projects. A father/son adventure will take place on Thursday, June 13, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Laserdome, 2050 Auction Road, Manheim. Sons may attend with their fathers, grandfathers, uncles, or other men age 18 and up. Each team’s evening will include laser tag, the racing zone, the VR roller coaster, arcade credit, pizza, chips, and unlimited beverages. There is a per-team fee, with an extra fee for an additional child. The registration deadline is Thursday, June 6. Movies in the Park will take place at the Elizabethtown Community Park amphitheater, Spruce and Washington streets, on select Tuesdays. Movies will begin at dusk, and there will be
giveaways every night. There is no admission fee, but refreshments will be sold. The movie lineup is “Trolls,” June 11; “Mary Poppins Returns,” June 25; “Small Foot,” July 9; “Christopher Robin,” July 23; and “Incredibles 2,” Aug. 13. Rain dates will be June 18, July 2, July 16, July 30, and Aug. 20, respectively. A track and field camp for students in third through eighth grades will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on June 17 to 21 at the track at Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS), 600 E. High St. EAHS varsity track coach Derrick McDonald will lead the camp, which is designed to provide an overview of and introduction to all aspects of track and field. Campers will work on distance events, jumping events, throwing events, hurdles, sprints, and relays.

Senior Center Posts Schedule The Elizabethtown Area Senior Center, located in the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown, invites area seniors to its upcoming programs. Proceeds from the Strawberry Festival will benefit the ongoing restoration and maintenance of the mansion - particularly, the current efforts to install a heating system in the building in order to be able to host events year-round, Jackson noted. More than 100 women from across Lancaster County gathered at the Lancaster Country Club on May 3 to raise awareness and funds in support of women’s heart health at the Lancaster Go Red for Women Luncheon. The event raised more than $250,000 for the American Heart Association (AHA). The event celebrated the 15th anniversary of the AHA’s Go Red for Women movement by encouraging women not only to wear red to raise awareness of heart disease in women, but also to take action to reduce their personal risk factors and work toward healthier communities. Megan Orr, registered dietitian with UPMC Pinnacle, presented a lecture on heart-healthy eating
tips as part of a heart disease risk-reduction plan. Attendees also listened to Doriana Musselman of Lancaster talk about life as the caregiver of her 2-year-old son, Emmett Musselman, who was born with a congenital heart defect that required his first of three open heart surgeries when he was 32 hours old. Doriana discussed her son’s surgeries and recovery, the stress it put on their family and the importance of keeping the entire family heart-healthy so they can enjoy more time together. Sue Keyser of WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital received the Go Red for Women Friend of Heart award for more than 15 years of volunteer service. The event, hosted by radio

Office Of Aging To Offer Vouchers In cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, Lancaster County Office of Aging will begin distributing 2019 Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program vouchers to eligible people on Wednesday, June 5. The nutrition vouchers can be exchanged for Pennsylvaniagrown fruits and vegetables through November at participating farmers markets and roadside stands. To be eligible, an individual must be at least 60 years of age, reside in Lancaster County, and have an annual household income of less than $22,311 for one person or less than $30,044 for two. Those living in nursing homes or other residential facilities where meals are provided are

Elizabethtown Mennonite To Host Open House To celebrate the completion of its new addition and remodel, Elizabethtown Mennonite Church, 300 S. Spruce St., Elizabethtown, would like to invite the community to an open house. The drop-in event will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 2. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the building and view a slide presentation showing the progress of the building project from its groundbreaking in May 2018 to its completion in January 2019. Soft-serve ice cream and other free refreshments will be available, as well as children’s activities. Stations will be set up throughout the church highlighting activities and programs such as the youth group, the Sewing Circle, a men’s exercise program, Women of God’s Word (WOW), Lunch in the Park, and more. About five years ago the church board briefly considered moving out of its downtown location because of the seemingly limited options for expansion due to how landlocked the location was. “But the vote from the board was unanimous: No, we are going to stay in town because we’re called to the community,” pastor Conrad Kanagy recalled. “As I watched the congregation
envision the addition, I really sensed it was to expand our ministry not just for ourselves, but for the community.” Lead trustee Paul Swanger said from there a plan to simply renovate the existing structure was considered; however, the limited space in the original kitchen along with a few other factors led to the decision to remodel the entire existing building and put on an addition. Along with Swanger, the Building Committee for the project included chair Lester Landis, Elvin Boll, Kate Ebersole, Steve Keener, Ron Kratz, and Don Miller. Seating capacity in the sanctuary was expanded to accommodate 213 people, and the wooden benches were replaced with chairs. The addition included a multipurpose room as well as new offices and a ministry room. Aside from all of the physical changes to the building, Kanagy explained that the church recently transitioned from a professional ministry model to calling forth ministers from within the congregation into using their giftings in the areas of worship, outreach, children, youths, and discipleship. Instead of having full-time salaried staff, each designated minister serves part-time and receives a small stipend. “It has created a lot of energy.

Indians Redeem Loss To E-town With District Win by Vaughn Brown
There is a lot of pressure that comes from being undefeated. A huge target is hung on your back as everyone under the sun wants to be the one to knock you down. Donegal’s fall came in an L-L League playoff game with backyard rival Elizabethtown where the Bears handed the Indians their lone loss of the season and knocking them out of the tournament. With a chance at redemption in last Tuesday’s District Three opener, a focused Tribe turned the tables and gained redemption in a 4-1 victory that sent the Bears packing while extending their own season in hopes of a D3 Class 5A championship. The third seeded Indians got to Elizabethtown’s Kristin Geesey for eight hits
and Sierra Neiss held the Bears to four hits while retiring 10 of the 29 batters she faced via strikeout. While Neiss held Elizabethtown scoreless through five innings, the Indians got off to a quick start in their first chance at the plate. After Morgan Biesecker (1-2) was hit by a Geesey pitch and then sacrificed to second by Aysha Gibbs (22-2, RBI), Stephanie Reider (1-3, RBI) lined the first pitch she saw into center field, sending Biesecker home with the first run of the game before Neiss lined into a double play to end the inning. Fast forward to the third inning where Donegal added all the runs it would need to score the revenge victory. Emma Miller (1-3) began by doubling into left and then moving to third on Biesecker’s single. Another

Program To Spotlight Local Inventor Ruth moved by the early 20th century to Gap, where he had a blacksmith and machine shop. The son of a South Carolina slave, he was by the early 1920s a well-known and capable blacksmith to Amish, Mennonite, and other farm families of eastern Lancaster and western Chester counties. H i s g e n i u s fo r s o l v i n g mechanical problems led him to design and patent a machine feeder used between the thresher and straw baler, a cinder-spreading truck, selfraising elevator, and other machines. He also followed in his father’s footsteps as a lay leader of his church. Hopkins will talk about the Underground Railroad and displaced African-Americans, Quaker ethics and abolitionism, and Pennsylvania German
agricultural and work craft technology, and he will suggest how the interplay made this region of the state a continuing success of William Penn’s experiment. After the speakers’ presentations, Bruce Bomberger, curator, will be available at the permanent agricultural exhibit in the Bitzer Building at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, Landis Valley Road off Oregon Pike, Lancaster, to interpret and answer questions about machinery built by Ruth that is on display. I loved getting to
know the office and library staff,” said Ella. “They will do anything they can to help you, especially if you get to know them and show them respect.” As far as other words of advice for underclassmen, the DHS Class of 2019 officers had plenty of solid wisdom: find a passion and stick to it, do not spread yourself too thin, speak up when you need to so that you will not regret it later, friends change and that is OK, be true to yourself, and, last but not least: always stick up for the underdog - because you never know when the roles will be reversed.

As of the April 23 Board of Trustees vote, Lancaster Bible College (LBC) has announced its sixth president. Dr. Ben Gutierrez will assume the lead role in the institution, which has more than 2,220 students and locations in four states and Uganda. Gutierrez joins LBC from his role as an extensively published professor of religion at Liberty University. He has served numerous positions at Liberty University, including co-provost and vice president for academic affairs, where he served the president as an Executive Leadership Member and shared responsibility to supervise an academic team of two vice
provosts, three associate vice provosts, 19 academic deans and executive directors, 500 residential faculty members, 2,000 global online faculty members, and more than 200 academic staff members. He holds a doctorate from Regent University and a Master of Arts in Religion and Master in Divinity from Liberty University. Succeeding Dr. Peter W. Teague, the third-longesttenured president in the commonwealth among private institutions of higher education, Gutierrez will officially begin his duties on Thursday, Aug. 1. Inauguration details will be forthcoming for later this fall.

Program assistant Kirstyn Ober explained that a typical Tuesday at LifeSwitch will start out with free time to give everyone a chance to get acclimated, followed by a structured game and additional free time. Supper will be served, which will present another opportunity for folks in the community to get involved by bringing meals to serve the students. After the meal, Freimark or Ober will lead TAG Time, which stands for “Turn Awareness to God” and will include a Bible lesson mixed with practical application. Freimark said that one of the goals for TAG Time is to help students as they are asking, “Who am I?” and “What do I believe?” TAG Time will be followed by small group time for discussion, another game, and more free time to round out the evening. To volunteer with LifeSwitch, interested adults may apply at www.reys.org or email programs@reys.org. At least six volunteers are needed for LifeSwitch. Steve Deck, chair of the Long’s Park Summer Music Series committee, said that the group had a specific goal in mind when choosing performers for this year’s schedule. “Getting more music everybody knows was key,â€? said Deck. “This year we will have several bands that will play more familiar music.â€? With that aim in mind, the committee has lined up an Eagles tribute band, an evening of Beatles tunes, and a celebration of Woodstock among a number of other musical presentations for the organization’s summer season, which will run from Sunday, June 2, through Sunday, Aug. 25. All concerts will be held in Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, beginning at 7:30 p.m., rain or shine. Most concerts will be on Sundays, but three Saturday night concerts will also be included in this year’s lineup. According to Deck, the series will kick off with the June 2 concert, which will feature John McEuen, one of the founders of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. “He is very engaging and will be great for the crowd,â€? said Deck. The second week of the Summer Music Series has been dubbed “tribute weekend,â€? according to Deck. “Come and hear songs you know and like to sing along to,â€? he said. On Sat- Celtic band RĂŠalta will join a lineup of a variety of musical groups to play at Long’s Park as part urday, June 8, local artist Corty of the Long’s Park Summer Music Series. These programs are reaching families and their children whose access to mental health support is particularly challenging, yet urgently needed. Grants were awarded to Advoz, Lancaster-Lebanon IU13, CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health, and CASA of Lancaster County. Advoz was granted $18,500 for its program Stand in Justice: Surrogate Victim-Offender Dialogue for Youth, which helps teens ages 12 to 18 in the juvenile justice system to develop empathy. LancasterLebanon IU13 was granted $13,800 for its Envision U Symposium, which helps high-risk youths in their transition to adulthood. CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health was granted $10,000 for its program Take Your Time: A Universal Mindful Education Series
for Elementary Students, Teachers and Families. CASA of Lancaster County was granted $15,000 for its Comprehensive Advocacy for Older Youth program and for the training of volunteers to advocate for youths ages 18 to 21. More grant funds are available. An information session will be held on Tuesday, June 4, at 2:30 p.m. at the S. Dale High Leadership Center, 1861 William Penn Way, Lancaster. Children on first-time visits are 7 to 12 years old and stay for one week.

The Travelers Protective Association (TPA) Post D Lancaster recently honored its past presidents at a ceremony in Lancaster. Those recognized were (from left) Dave Evans, Don Tribit, Howard Hill, George Keebler, Peggy Keebler, George Kern, and Mike Wagner. The presidents’ contributions to the Lancaster community include helping with building the fire escape training trailer and building a roadside park at the Tourist Information Center, holding teen driving rodeos and bike rodeos, assisting with safety measures at a local railroad attraction, conducting highway cleanups, and engaging in many other projects.
