Did you know farming is all about math and magic? Kindergartners from Donegal Primary School (DPS) learned that lesson, among others, during a field trip to Heritage Creek Farm Camp and Education Center to celebrate Earth Day, April 22. More than 100 students explored hands-on stations throughout the working farm, located at 2126 Risser Mill Road, Mount Joy. Education director Cindi Hughes
connected with DPS when she presented a program for Groundhog Day. That led to an invitation for the students to come see the farm in action. “The school was very excited to visit, because we’re right in their backyard, and we’re focused on agriculture,” she said. “Our farm celebrates Earth Day every single day of the year. We’re excited to be the host for our home school district.” She noted that students in Donegal’s Life Skills classrooms

The annual Marietta Day festivities will run along seven blocks of Market Street, which will be closed to vehicles, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A rain date for the event is set for Sunday, May 17. Community will be in the spotlight in a fun and tasty way at the RAISE28 Cornhole Tournament and BBQ Cookoff. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, at Community Bible Church, 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta. Competitors in the barbecue contest will be outside, where they will cook ribs and small bites, explained Mark Unger, executive director of RAISE28. “There will be judges who will rate the ribs and the small bites according to appearance, taste and texture,” Unger said. “The small bites are whatever the cooker wants to put into a boat. It could be brisket, pulled pork, chicken wings, mac and cheese, etc.” Judges will sample the ribs and small bites between noon and 12:30 p.m., before awarding first-, second- and third-place winners for both categories. A People’s Choice award will also be presented. The winners will be announced at 3:30 p.m., and trophies will be awarded for first and second place, with ribbons given for third place and the People’s Choice award. “The cornhole tournament will begin at 9 a.m.,” Unger shared. “There are two brackets: Social or Competitive.” Cash prizes will be awarded for the first-place winners in each bracket. The second-place winners will get back the money they paid to participate in the tournament. First-, second- and thirdplace trophies will be awarded for both brackets.
