For more than 90 years, Harold Billow lived in Mount Joy. Although he passed away in May 2022 at the age of 99, Billow will not be forgotten in the community. Rep. Lloyd Smucker introduced legislation to rename the Mount Joy post office in honor of Billow, and it was signed into law last December. On April 4, the Harold
Billow Post Office Building, 1 E. Main St., was dedicated in a ceremony led by Smucker. He was joined by Mount Joy Borough Mayor Tim Bradley, Lancaster County Commissioner Josh Parsons, state Rep. Tom Jones, United States Postal Service manager for operations integrity Nathan Luttringer and postmaster of the Mount Joy post office Christina Willig. See Hero pg 3

Celebrate small-town fun at Mayfest BY CATHY MOLITORIS
hen it comes to Mayfest, an annual celebration of Maytown, this year’s event is going to be bigger and better than ever, said Linda Good, event coordinator. “This will be the first year we are having it in two locations,” she stated. “We are limited with space right in Maytown, and since we had so many vendors who were interested, and so many things we wanted to do, we had to look for a second location.” Mayfest will be held on Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Activities will take place in historic Maytown as well as at Lloyd H. Fuhrman Memorial Park. The park is located at 190 Rock Point Road, Marietta. In downtown Maytown, featured festivities will include a house and yard tour of 10 homes. Tickets for the house tour will be available on the day of Mayfest at the Maytown/East Donegal Museum, 4 W. High St. During Mayfest, the museum will display textiles, coverlets and quilts made in Maytown, and displays of school yearbooks
Maytown. A historical scavenger hunt with prizes will also be offered. At the park, festivities will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. “We will have 87 vendors who will offer a variety of items,” said Megan Shank, who is organizing that portion of Mayfest. Several food trucks will be on hand, live art will be featured and cash giveaways will be held. Live music will be performed in the park by Steel Radiance from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and by Handsome Greg beginning at 2 p.m. Shank noted that she is still looking for student volunteers to help with the event. Anyone interested in volunteering may call 717-426-1526 and leave a message. Mayfest is an annual celebration to mark the founding of Maytown, which dates to May 1, 1760. “Mayfest is a wonderful time to come out and learn about the history of Maytown, have lots of fun and greet people that you haven’t seen for a while,” said Good. 5K will raise funds for African camp BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When children attend the Arm of Hope camp in Ghana, Africa, they not only experience fun and fellowship, but they receive so much more. “Camp gives them three meals a day, which a lot of them don’t get on a regular basis, plus games, story time, small group time activities and Bible teaching time,” explained Greg Grove, who volunteers with the camp. “It’s like a Bible school on steroids - all day long for a week.” You can help send a kid to camp
by participating in the 10th annual Arm of Hope 5K. The race will be held on Saturday, May 6, beginning at 9 a.m. at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy. Grove said the race is a fun opportunity for people who are serious runners and for those who just want to get out and enjoy a community event. “ Walkers, strollers and pets are welcome,” he shared. “ We have lots of door prizes, as well as homemade baked goods for the top finishers in each age bracket.” See 5K pg 2

Elizabeth St. Additional festivities will include the High Street Tavern food stand, serving lunch and dessert in the yard behind the museum; demonstrators of historic crafts outside the museum; and a 2 p.m. program featuring the renewal of vows of a Maytown couple. Second-grade students will perform songs and dances; pictures from a first-grade art contest will be on display at Maytown Reformed Church, 11 E. Elizabeth St.; and a traditional maypole dance will be performed by alumni dancers. “I am looking for people who have danced the maypole when they were in elementary school and who would be interested in dancing it again this year,” Good remarked. A guided bus tour will take visitors to historic sites throughout town, and penny candy will be available for kids at Ye Olde Shenk’s Store. Also at the store, cookies, whoopie pies and other treats will be for sale. The Church of God will feature a quilt display, a town cakewalk will be held following the maypole dance, and costumed storytellers will be located throughout
