PANCAKE BREAKFAST

St. John’s Episcopal Church, 239 E. Market St., Marietta, will hold its annual pancake breakfast with a visit from the Easter Bunny on Saturday, April 20, from 8 to 10 a.m. The meal will feature pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit, juice, coffee, and special Easter treats. Admission fees have been set for adults and for children ages 5 to 11, with children age 4 and under admitted free. The Easter Bunny will hand out candy to all children under age 12, and parents will be able to take photos. St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 27 E. Main St., Mount Joy, will serve a ham dinner on Sunday, April 14, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The dinner will include ham with gravy, au gratin potatoes, corn, applesauce, rolls and butter, dessert, and a beverage. Community Invited To National Day Of Prayer Breakfast By Francine Fulton

Those who believe in the power and importance of prayer, regardless of religious affiliation, are invited to attend the Mount Joy National Day of Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, May 2, at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. The event will include a breakfast buffet from 6:15 to 6:45 a.m., followed by the program from 6:45 to 8 a.m. According to Glenn Musser, who is co-chair of the event along with Nancy Shonk, the local event is part of a nationwide observance. “On April 17, 1952, President Harry Truman signed a law proclaiming a National Day of Prayer,” Musser said. “In 1988, President Reagan designated the first Thursday of May as the National Day of Prayer.” Musser said that the call to prayer actually began earlier when the Founding

Fathers prayed for wisdom in forming a new nation. The national committee, which was formed in 1972, chooses a Bible verse as the theme of the annual event. This year’s theme is John 13:34, “Love one another, just as I loved you.” “We will focus on seven topics as suggested by the national headquarters,” said Musser. According to www.nationaldayof prayer.org, the prayer priorities for 2019 are government, military, media arts, business, education, church and family. Musser noted that there will be a guest speaker representing each category at the breakfast. For example, state Sen. “We had 500 attendees last year and are hoping that number is higher this year,” said program support liaison Linda Swisher, speaking about the 26th annual Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 Education Conference scheduled for Tuesday, June 18, at Lampeter-Strasburg High School, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster. In order for the conference to serve a broad range of people, an equally wide-ranging list of topics will be addressed in morning and afternoon breakout sessions. A sampling of subjects includes drug and alcohol

prevention and current drug trends; anger management for adolescents; mindfulness; eating disorders, specifically anorexia; how to help bereaved students; special education law; diversity; helping students with anxiety; planning for retirement; and effectively managing language barriers. There will also be classes on literacy, behavior, math, autism, technology, and preschool/Early Intervention. “Two sessions that we are very excited about this year are the sessions on Phenomenal Science Instruction and Stopping the Bleed,” Swisher remarked. “The Science Instruction session is the first time we have

The NAWCC National Watch and Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia, will hold its inaugural Clockwork Festival on Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This fun and educational event will bring together enthusiasts of the maker movement, steampunk, Gearworks, and automaton communities all under the umbrella of horology the art and science of the study of time. Vendors will sell related items as well as refreshments. Two panel discussions will be held, one focusing on horology and one focusing on the maker movement. These panels will trace the connections among gear-related creations, automata, engineering, and horology. Participants will include Michele Marinelli and Jere Ryder, both of the Morris Museum Guinness Collection in Morris Township, N.J.; Brett King from AutomataCon; steampunk maker Don Dodson; and Lindsey Pei, watchmaker and designer from Ornament Incarnate. Dave Lindow, machinist and maker of the Lindow Rose Enginew, will lead a Rose Engine turning demonstration. In addition, there will be a craft contest, a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum, a steampunk costume contest, and tea dueling. The day will be capped off by a performance by the band Night Watch Paradox, which will be a participatory journey of musical performance and storytelling. One hundred years have passed since the Marietta Community House (MCH) was donated to the people of Marietta by the Hiestand family in memory of Lt. Benjamin Hiestand, who was killed while serving during World War I. In remembrance of the reason for the donation of this historic building and to recognize the service of Marietta veterans, the MCH board has planned a Veterans Day agenda for this centennial year of its existence. Using the service of Benjamin as a springboard, the Community House plans to compile a registry of all Marietta residents who are currently serving or have served in the Armed Forces. Fairly detailed records up to World War II are available for those Marietta Borough enlistees who were in the military during a conflict, but records since that time are scarce. The MCH board

unusual, especially involving a charity event,” explained tournament director Clair Dale Treese. “In match play, every hole is important. The players like that ... they have to make a shot for their team. But by using a scramble method of play, some of the pressure is taken off the individual knowing they have a partner. We stress this is a friendly competition, but there is still an element of ‘butterflies’ when you really need to make a good golf shot.” Teams are paired based on their combined handicaps and indexed according to the United States Golf Association (USGA) rating of the course. Each team will play three matches of nine holes each for a total of 27 holes overall, and teams that qualify after the three initial matches will continue to the single-elimination championship match play rounds. In those matches, each team will play best-of-three holes. The final two teams will play to determine an overall tournament team champion. Matches will begin at 8:15 a.m., and lunch will be served at 2 p.m. The championship rounds will start at approximately 3:15 p.m., with the presentation of the trophy and prizes for the champions, along with the second- and third-place teams, at approximately 5 p.m. Team registration and sponsor forms are available by contacting Treese at 717-3679144 or cdtreese@century link.net. This year’s camp will be held at the Elizabethtown Park Pavilion 5 from 9 a.m. to noon from Monday, June 17, to Friday, July 26, with no camp on Thursday, July 4. “Over the years, we have had the kids attend the tournament to meet the players and receive some golf instruction by the teaching professionals,” Treese explained. “We repeatedly tell the teams involved that it is a golf tournament, but they are here playing for the kids. We know the need never goes away, so we keep trying to do what we can to help.”

Pamoja Event To Raise Funds For Orphans Orphaned children and young adults from Kitale, Kenya, will travel to Lancaster to raise awareness for the worldwide orphan crisis during a cultural event called Pamoja: An Evening in Kenya. This event, sponsored by the Burkholder Family Foundation in conjunction with Horizon: Empower the Orphaned, will occur on Saturday, April 13, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. Pamoja, which means “together” in Swahili, is an event to showcase what is possible when people come together. During the event, 15 orphaned children and teenagers from Horizon’s Baba Nyumbani Micro Community in Kenya will share their stories of overcoming adversity. The public is invited to attend this free, family-friendly event. From 5:30 to 6:45 p.m., there will be an hors d’oeuvres reception, where guests may partake

of catered Kenyan-inspired beverages and appetizers. During the reception, through song, dance and storytelling, attendees may meet the Horizon children; participate in child-friendly, interactive activities; receive a free T-shirt; and experience what life is like in Kenya through virtual reality stations. Following the reception, WJTL radio personality Lisa Landis will be the master of ceremonies for the program, which will include

the children’s performances. A freewill offering will be received to benefit the work of Horizon: Empower the Orphaned. Program Will Discuss Local History

Art Exhibit, Classes Scheduled Susquehanna Heritage will host works from Columbia artist Diana Thomas through June at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. The collection will showcase her journey to paint 55 paintings of the Lower Susquehanna, one painting a week for more than a year as part of her project “Current Color - A Year on the River.” Also as part of the project, Thomas wrote a weekly journal entry that portrayed life lessons found in her body of work. The “Current Color” paintings are mostly acrylic on canvas, and a few are mixed media. The journal entries will be presented alongside each week’s piece. Partway through the project, Thomas’ daughter lost her long battle with substance overuse. Soon after, the same tragedy befell her daughter’s significant other, leaving behind their then 8-year-old son. In response, Thomas created pieces called “River of Tears” and “Even the Moon Cried.”

Thomas will also lead Creative River, a riverfront art series that will offer journaling, sketching, and painting experiences in small groups for people age 15 and older. Session one will take place on Saturday, April 13, from 1 to 4 p.m. and will give instruction and suggestions for writing about the river and nature. Participants will receive a writing journal. Session two will take place on Saturday, May 18, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will give instruction for sketching and creatively noting river surroundings. Attendees will receive a nature journal. GSS Campaign from pg 1 Good Samaritan Services (GSS) is a Chester County- and Lancaster County-based organization that provides emergency shelter and transitional and permanent housing for those experiencing homelessness. To honor the 10th anniversary of CEO Nate Hoffer’s leadership at Good Samaritan Services (GSS), GSS board and staff have launched a campaign to fund permanent housing rental assistance for the organization’s Bridge of Hope @ GSS program. Through the “It’s Good to Be Home!” campaign, GSS is seeking businesses, churches, schools, community groups and individuals to make donations or set up fundraising teams to help avert eviction and homelessness for single women with children in Chester and Lancaster counties. When Hoffer was appointed as leader of GSS 10 years ago, the organization had three hous-

es and served approximately 15 men in emergency shelter and transitional housing in a year. Now, GSS serves more than 185 men, women and children every year, working across the spectrum of needs, from emergency shelter and transitional housing to long-term affordable housing and permanent housing, with additional programs like matched savings, microfinance, mentoring and job training. GEARS, in cooperation with the Elizabethtown Area Services for Special Needs, will sponsor this year’s Camp Ladybug. Camp will take place at the Elizabethtown Area Community Park Pavilion 5 from 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays through Fridays, June 17 to July 26, with no camp on Thursday, July 4. Camp is free to GEARS members, with a fee for nonmembers. The camp is for individuals age 6 and up who are mentally delayed and/or physically challenged. The purpose of Camp Ladybug is to provide a fun atmosphere where the campers may participate in recreational activities while socializing. The theme this year is “Journey to Outer Space.” Many activities and special events have been planned, including a visit

to Lancaster Science Factory, swimming at the Masonic Village Brossman Pool, glow bowling, a visit to Northwest EMS, and a talent show. Additionally, GEARS will offer the Summer Playground program for youths ages 6 to 14 from 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays through Thursdays, June 10 to July 25, with no camp on July 4. Activities will be offered at three locations: Elizabethtown Community Park, Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, and West Donegal Township Municipal Park. GEARS will also administer sites in Rapho Township and Marietta, and readers may call the GEARS office for details. Summer Playground will offer a wide variety of recreational activities to children. Playground leaders will create safe, supervised, and fun-filled environments with activities including sports, games, arts and crafts, and nature activities. Monday and Tuesday, June

Separate fees have been set for the program for GEARS members and for nonmembers, or people may pay a drop-in rate per day. Pickleball, for people of all ages, will be offered in the gym at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown, from noon to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays, 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, and 6 to 9 p.m. on the second and fourth Fridays. Pickleball is a combination of tennis and badminton played on a badminton-size court with lightweight paddles and plastic perforated balls. Equipment will be available. GEARS will host its 13th annual four-person Spring Mix Golf Tournament on Friday, April 26, at the Sunset Golf Course, 2601 Sunset Drive, Middletown. There will be a 1 p.m. shotgun start, and the tournament will consist of three different playing formats: six holes of scramble, six holes of better ball, and six holes of alternate play. The per-player fee will include green fees, use of a cart, range balls, dinner, and awards. Tournament proceeds will benefit the GEARS Summer Playground program.

LOHF To Award Scholarships Lancaster Osteopathic Health Foundation (LOHF) is accepting scholarship applications. The scholarships are available to Lancaster County nursing students who are beginning their nursing education, advancing their nursing career, or seeking specialized certificates such as a School Nurse Certificate. Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development is bringing back its Buck-A-Cup campaign in its original format and name. The campaign, which in recent years has taken on various forms and titles, including Restaurants Helping Schreiber and Helping Hands, launched on April 5 with a kickoff event at Gus’s Keystone Restaurant in Mount Joy. It will continue through Friday, April 19, at participating restaurants. As part of the campaign, the nearly two dozen participating locations across Lancaster County will raise money for Schreiber by selling two levels of pins, each of which will entitle the holder to

free coffee. For a nominal fee, individuals may purchase a pin that will entitle them to a free cup of coffee or alternate beverage on Coffee Day, April 19. For a higher fee, individuals will receive a pin that will provide them with one free cup of coffee or alternate beverage per day during the campaign period. In addition, some restaurants have organized individual fundraisers to supplement the sale of the pins. C.R. will be held rain or shine for children ages 2 through fifth grade. Egg hunt participants will meet inside for crafts, a snack and other activities before being directed to designated search areas. Candy and prizes will be available and all participants are eligible to enter a basket drawing featuring donations from local merchants. Ella’s favorite subjects are Advanced Placement U.S. history and precalculus. She plays the piano, marimba, and drums, and she participates in the marching band, jazz band, and percussion ensemble, as well as the orchestra for the school musical. Ella is involved in quiz bowl and dance class. She volunteers at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church’s vacation Bible school. Melanie’s favorite subjects are math, biology and chemistry. She plays softball, and she is a member of National Honor Society, Future Medical Leaders of America, varsity club, National Spanish Honor

Society and the Aevidum student suicide awareness club. She participates in MiniTHON. Churchill Portrayal Rescheduled The Arts at Millersville has rescheduled “Randy Otto Is Winston Churchill - The Blitz” for Thursday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m. in Steinman Hall at The Ware Center, 42 N. Track Teams Dominate Columbia in Sweep by Vaughn Brown

Coming off opening week wins, both the girls’ and boys’ track teams received a bonus when they took on a severely undermanned Columbia squad on Monday, April 1 at home. In an extremely unbalanced competition, the boys placed first through third in all but one event on the way to a 148-1 victory while the girls conceded three placements in their 124-11 win. In all, five boys scored dual wins for the Indians with two runners pulling double duty on the three relay victories as well. Jared Collazo ran the opening leg of the 400 and along with Camden Palmer, Jack Dearborn, and Matthew Jackson the team won with a time of 47.2. Collazo also took first in the 100 (11.2) and 200 (24.3), finishing just ahead of Jackson in both races who finished in 11.3 and 25.0, respectively. Aedan Wilkinson anchored the winning 1600 relay team which featured Nathan Brubaker, Jackson, and Dearborn, and finished in 3:58.9, shortly after winning his second individual event of the day

as well. He posted a track best time of 18.0 in the 100 high hurdles, finishing just ahead of teammate Porter Scott (18.2), and followed with a 45.9 in the 300 hurdles, with Scott again placing second in 46.9. Also ending the day with two individual wins was Logan Fry in the 1600 (4:57.4) and 800 (2:16), with Ryan Zuch placing second in both races as well with respective times of 5:03.1 and 2:17, while Matthew Brown won the long jump (19-5) as well as the high jump (5-10). Cael Rapp also doubled up, winning the javelin with a throw of 164-10 and the shot put with a distance of 42-1.5. Other winners included Aydan Miller, Brock Overlander, Hunter Gehman, and Hunter Williams (11:27.4) in the 3200 relay, Michael Linebarger (59.4) in the 400, Overlander (11:43.7) in the 3200, Scott (41-9) in the triple jump, Brubaker (10-0) in the pole vault, and Owen Kling (109-10) in the discus. The remaining second place finishers included Taj Younger (60.3) in the 400, Brandon Hess (11:54.4) in the 3200, Linebarger (17-11) in the long jump, Francis Licopoli (36-1) in the triple jump, Scott (5-6) in the high jump, Cody Stough (8-0) in the pole

vault, Nissley (126-11) in the javelin, Nathan Stough (38-5.5) in the shot put, and Connor Ruhl (99-1) in the discus. On the girl’s side there were only two relays run on the day with Donegal winning both the 3200 and 1600. Rachel Fernald, McKenzie DuBusky, Meg Zell, and Keri Anderson clocked in at 12:12.0 to take the long win while Sarah Hinkel, Gianna Lewis, Alexandria Daly, and Janell Brinser finished the 1600 in 5:02.1. Daly and Brinser also joined Taylor Nissly in winning two individual events as well to lead the lady Indians. Nissly’s time of 12.2 in the 100 was enough to win and she also went on to finish tops in the 200 as well, clocking in at 25.8, while Daly won both the hurdles, finishing the 100 in 19.0 and the 300 in 56.5 with teammate Desiree Whitcraft taking second in both with respective times of 20.0 and 57.4. Brinser, meanwhile, went on the win the triple jump (30.0) with fellow Indian Lillian Stehman (27-8) placing second, as well as the pole vault (7-0). Other winners included Hadley Shoaf (5:52.1) in the 1600 with Myra Naqvi (5:57.7) taking second, Mia Steffy (1:11.7), and Reign Medina

(1:16.3) going 1,2 in the 400, Naqvi (2:37.4) followed by Anderson (2:38.7) in the 800, Fernald ( 12:56.4) ahead of Anderson (14:24.7) in the 3200, Amaya Woods (3-10) in the high jump, Hannah McNece (102-8) and Woods (80-2) in the javelin, Ashanti Berry (30-4.5) with Aliza Johns (30-0) in second in the shot put, and Johns (95-5) finishing ahead of Emily Kreider (62-1) in the discus. BASEBALL Donegal’s four game stretch from Friday, March 29 to last Wednesday began promisingly enough with a 6-1 win over Northern Lebanon, but took a downward turn after that. The Indians lost their next three by a combined 25 runs beginning with a 13-3 loss to Cocalico last Monday that was followed the next day by a 10-0 defeat at the hands of Manheim Central, and an 8-3 loss to Octorara the day after that. Building a 5-0 lead over four innings against the Vikings, Donegal used 12 hits to come out on top against a Northern Lebanon team that struggled at the plate. Matt Wallace picked up the win for the Indians going into the fifth inning before Brandon Buckius took over in relief. Wallace stuck out five, giving up

one run on only two hits with Buckius picking up the final out of the fifth and finishing the game with only one hit surrendered. Drew Bechtold led the Indians at the plate going 2-4 with 2 RBI including a triple to open the game before scoring on a sacrifice fly to left field by Kyle Burger (1-3, RBI) for a quick 1-0 lead that turned into a two run advantage in the second when Noah Karichner (2-4) scored on a fielder’s choice ground ball by Zach Leid (1-3, RBI). Karichner scored again in the fourth on a single by Xavier Cannon (2-3, RBI) after reaching first on an error to lead off the inning. Two more runs crossed the plate for Donegal before the inning ended on a line drive single by Bechtold to increase the lead to five. Northern Lebanon got on the board in the bottom of the sixth with one run, but an RBI single by Solomon Myers (2-4, RBI) in the seventh sealed the victory. The next two games proved difficult for the Indians to manufacture any offense while they gave up 23 runs on 19 hits against Cocalico and Manheim. The Eagles chased Buckius from the mound in the third after scoring ten runs on six hits before David Garner took over. Not faring any better, he was touched for three runs on four hits over the next two innings. Donegal attempted to mount a comeback when a single by Will Small (2-3, 2RBI) in the fourth scored both Burger and Wallace to cut the deficit to eight runs, before Wallace scored again in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Karichner to make it 10-3. Cocalico would have none of that, however, as the Eagles scored three more times in the sixth to end the game. After getting blanked by the

Barons, Donegal hosted Octorara and once again were forced to play from behind after getting torched for eight runs in the opening two innings. Wallace got the start and pitched five innings, during which he gave up six hits before Garner came on the finish the game with Octorara ahead 8-0. A two-run fourth inning sparked by a double by Karichner (1-3) that put Small in scoring position at third, an RBI ground out by Wallace and an RBI triple by Myers (1-3, RBI) pulled the Indians to within six at 8-2. Donegal added one more run in the bottom of the fifth when Burger (1-3, RBI)singled home Joel Grillo, but Octorara clamped down after that, not allowing another run and securing the game. SOFTBALL Three dominant performances by the lady Indians kept Donegal (5-0) a game ahead of Section Three rival Manheim Central (5-1) in the standings. With scores of 7-0 over Northern Lebanon, 14-0 against Cocalico, and 17-0 at Octorara, Donegal showed no signs of slowing down, either. Sierra Neiss started and finished all three games for the Indians, only surrendering five hits in the 3-0 run. Against Northern Lebanon, Maddie Gohn led the offensive charge going 3-4 with a double while Morgan Biesecker drove in three runs. In the big win over Cocalico, Donegal racked up 11 hits including a Stephanie Reider grand slam in the first inning to put the Indians in the lead 4-0. Biesecker (2-2, 2RBI) and Cheyenne Livelsberger (2-3, 4RBI) each had a double as well. TENNIS Donegal’s tennis team went 2-1 over a span that stretched from Monday, April 1 to this past Thursday. there is a need to find new ways to strengthen the LMC-to-national church relationships. LMC’s delegates will begin relating to those partner churches that are now autonomous. The delegate role involves maintaining regular communication with the partner, working with relevant EMM staff for joint trips, attending significant events of the partner, engaging with a new generation of the partner church’s leaders, coordinating visits to LMC regions from partners, and additional tasks. While delegates bring a wealth of relational value to these global relationships, they do not make decisions on financial matters. Instead, their primary functions are to listen and engage with faith, discipleship, and church life issues pertaining to LMC and the partner. Serving as volunteers for renewable five-year terms, delegates are formally appointed by LMC, but the discernment process may include insight from

EMM staff and leadership of the partner church. Tom Eshleman, the pastor of Groffdale Mennonite Church, serves as LMC’s global delegate, relating to international partners and overseeing the new international partner delegate system. International partner delegates are encouraged to raise their own funds for expenses. LMC also contacts the delegates’ church districts and other supporters to request funding. As funds are received, LMC manages the financial accounts for each delegate. On Feb. 15 and 16, the current delegates gathered with both LMC and Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM) staff at Mennonite Central Committee’s Welcoming Place in Akron for an initial orientation. EMM staff provided resourcing for the orientation, covering topics such as ministry philosophies, histories of respective partners, missiological and anthropological resources, and pragmatic education on international partnerships.

The NAWCC National Watch and Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia, will host Lunch Time Talk on Wednesday, April 17, in the basement classroom. “Complicated Pocket Watches: Five Masterpieces From the Museum’s Collection” will be presented from noon to 1 p.m. by master watchmaker Bernhard Stoeber. The program will be of interest to watch aficionados, historians, and those with an appreciation for exquisite timepieces. On display, and to be discussed, will be five exceptional, complicated pocket watches made by A.L. Breguet, Lange and Sohne, Patek Philippe, Henry Capt, and S. Auer, ranging in age

from 1814 to 1947. Four of these pocket watches were made or assembled in the famous Swiss Valle de Joux. The history of this birthplace of complicated watch movements will be covered. More than four years ago, Lancaster Mennonite (LM) School and Hershey Christian School entered into negotiations and a planning process for LM to acquire Hershey Christian. The enrollment at the Hershey campus of LM has been tenuous since the acquisition. After four years of operation, the LM board of directors, finance committee and administration unanimously agreed that sustainability of the Hershey campus of LM is no longer viable due to enrollment decline. LM has experienced enrollment decline for more than 10 years and is in the process of creating a sustainable financial model for the future. LM will be transitioning two campuses. Kraybill will operate independently as of Monday, July 1, and Hershey will close at the end of the 2018-19 school year. LM will also reduce staff at other campuses. This consolidation effort reduces the amount of square footage maintained compared to student enrollment numbers. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee for the programs, which will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. Children under age 3 may attend for free. Registration and payment are required by noon on the business day before the event, unless stated otherwise. Nature Play, designed for babies ages 12 to 36 months, will be offered from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, April 12. A naturalist will lead an exploration of nature through play, including group activities like parachute games, stories, and yoga as well as free play with natural materials. Parent participation is essential to the success of this program. Bear Required Adventure: Fur, Feathers, and Ferns, open to current Bear Cub Scouts ages 6 to 9, will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 13. Bear Scouts

are invited to join a naturalist to work on requirements for the Fur, Feathers and Ferns Adventure Badge. During the program, Scouts will complete five of the seven requirements for the badge.
