MJAA To Celebrate 50th Anniversary DSAA Plans Expansion

The Mount Joy Athletic Association (MJAA) will celebrate its 50th anniversary during its opening-day event on Sunday, April 7, beginning at 2 p.m. at Kunkle Field, 301 Manheim St., Mount Joy. The MJAA has produced six players drafted by Major League Baseball (MLB). Two of them have played in the major leagues, with one being named to the MLB Hall of Fame. One of the six is currently an MLB coach. Activities will include a silent auction, wiffle ball games and the honoring of past members. Admission is free, but attendees are asked to bring nonperishable food items for donation to the Mount Joy Food Bank. “We want all alumni, as well as anybody in the community, to attend,” said Stacey Crider, MJAA secretary. She noted that planning for the event began last fall.

Donegal FBLA To Host Craft Show pictures with the Easter Bunny from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., a concession stand, and giveaway drawings. Everyone who attends the event will be provided with a complimentary ticket to enter the drawings. Proceeds will go toward covering the cost of sending 17 FBLA members to the annual state competition in Hershey in April. Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) is developing new programs and services to meet the needs of families impacted by addiction. Additionally, the organization, which is currently located at 15A W. Main St., Mount Joy, is planning to relocate. The plan is to use the new space as a hub for family support, not just with the services it currently offers, such as family support, assistance with finding treatment, and naloxone distribution, but also with the new programs it intends to start after it moves. These programs are slated to include SMART (Self-Management and Recovery Training) Recovery meetings and SMART Teen meetings; the organization also plans to invite 12-step programs to meet at its location. “(The Race Against Racism) is another way to forward the mission of empowering women and eliminating racism,” explained Bob Hebert, Lancaster YWCA director of communications and community engagement. “It’s a fundraiser for us, and it supports our social justice programming. Specifically, we host a social justice institute

four times per year.” This year’s Race Against Racism, which Hebert noted is the longest-running consecutive race against racism in the country, will be held rain or shine on Saturday, April 27. The certified 5K course will begin in Musser Park, located at East Chestnut and North Lime streets in Lancaster, at 9 a.m. Following the run, Hebert said about 70 to 80 children typically take part in a Kids’ Fun Run, which spans Musser Park. The Fun Run will be held at about 10:30 a.m., when the run is completed and the course has been cleared. The Fun Run is open to children through age 12 for a nominal fee. The 12th annual Humanity Fest, a multicultural festival, will be held in Musser Park in conjunction with the race. Humanity Fest, which will be open from 7 to 11:30 a.m., is designed to celebrate the diversity of the local community. The event will feature food, face painting, and handmade crafts. “Community organizations will have displays,” said Hebert. “The YWCA will have a table, and our sexual assault prevention and counseling center will have a table set up.” The honorary chair of the 2019 race will be Norman Bristol Colon, who has been appointed by Gov. Tom Wolf to serve as executive director of the Governor’s 2020 Census Complete Count Commission. Colon was the first Latino/Hispanic assistant director of admissions at Millersville University (MU), where he was responsible to implement MU’s first strategy for recruitment of Latino students. The model was later used by the Pennsylvania State System
of Higher Education. Colon was a founder and first national chair of the United States Council on Latino Affairs, an organization formed to advance the status of more than 55 million Latinos living in the U.S. According to Hebert, funds raised by the race will help cover the costs associated with Racial Justice Institute - Parts One and Two, which the organization presents several times per year. “(Each part) is a three-day course that discusses systemic oppression and racism that goes on in the country and how to combat it,” explained Hebert. “(The institute) brings diverse people into the same room (to) learn about what racism is and (how to) respect each other’s backgrounds.” Part one of the institute is open to the public; to take part two, a participant needs to have taken part one or have other social justice training. Hebert researched the history of Lancaster’s Race Against Racism, which will be run for the 21st time this year. “From what I could find, it started in 1999, and it has been growing ever since,” said Hebert. “It was an initiative from the national YWCA.” Hebert explained that several other Races Against Racism will be held at the same time as the Lancaster race, including one in York and one in Harrisburg. The 5K course follows a route through Lancaster city. “(The course) goes down Chestnut and then by McCaskey (High School) and loops around back on Chestnut,” said Hebert, who warned runners to be wary of potholes. The course is lightly rolling with some incline toward the end and

Open hours will be set up for those in recovery to use computers to build resumes and search for jobs. Life skills classes and a clothing/hygiene pantry will also be available. DSAA also plans to expand
its family support programs by offering SMART Friends and Family meetings, as well as sixweek group sessions; the organization currently can hold only one-on-one sessions. Additional plans call for holding family retreats to teach families how to manage the challenges that come when addiction is present in a family. The organization has had
many requests for support groups for children impacted by addiction. As DSAA’s mission is to support families struggling with addiction, it is currently working with organizations and individuals experienced in working with children to develop evidence-based programming and support. DSAA is also planning to add support for those caring for their family

members’ children. DSAA hopes that its hub will be a friendly, welcoming space full of activity. The organization estimates that it will cost $120,000 to cover construction and furnishings. Cornerstone Youth Center Plans Banquet, Auction The silent and live auction items will include a hot air balloon ride over Lancaster County, gift certificates for area restaurants and attractions, multiple yards of mulch for the upcoming spring, handcrafted items, and skydiving lessons with a local club. While in college, Pam discovered the joy of investing herself in the lives of others. She now speaks at women’s events, nonprofit group gatherings, and other events, and she has been featured on television shows and has won national awards. She is currently writing a book. Pam has been married to Bob for more than 40 years, and they have five children and eight grandchildren. Bob and Pam have become known as “homeschool pioneers,” as they educated all of their children at home, starting the endeavor in 1982. The Tebows lived for a number of years in the Philippines, where Bob continues to have an ongoing ministry, the Bob Tebow Evangelistic Association. The Tebows also have an ongoing ministry in several semi-closed Asian countries. The banquet program will also include ministry updates and a new Cornerstone video, along with an opportunity to contribute financially. Friends of the ministry have pledged to match funds up to $42,000 that are donated during the banquet and through Monday, April 8. Donors who contribute after the

Crider, who learned more about the history of the MJAA from Barry Etsell, the first vice president of the organization, noted that a few years later, the MJAA approached the Mount Joy Borough Council to ask for $1,500 to finance the cost of building dugouts, the concession stand and bathrooms. Around 1971, lighting was installed at Kunkle Field by an all-volunteer crew. “Ed Jones was construction supervisor at PP&L. Barry Etsell went to Ed Jones and asked for light poles. Two days later, (Jones) made it happen,” Crider said. She noted that Jones was the grandfather of her husband, Matt, who is the current MJAA president. Today, MJAA offers instruction and competition for tee-ball (ages 4 to 6) and 8U, 10U, 12U and 14U baseball and softball teams for children from across the Donegal School District and surrounding areas. In addition to the celebration on April 7, representatives from the MJAA will participate in the Mount Joy Memorial Day Parade

Susquehanna Yacht Club, 1730 Long Level Road, Wrightsville, and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will teach the first Sailing Skills and Seamanship Class since this area was designated as a National Heritage Area. The class is a recognized Coast Guard Auxiliary class, and participants who successfully complete the final test are eligible to receive the Pennsylvania Boating Safety Education Certificate, which is valid for use of all
watercraft, including jet skis and other personal watercraft. now the event is all about books. “ We want to recycle these books and get them in the hands of people,” she enthused, “and we have a wide selection of books.” Aware that book sale enthusiasts can also become hungry, volunteer Sirenda McNece will assist with the food table, where coffee and baked goods will be available for takeout. “ We call it Food To Go,” she said, “and we’ll also have American, Italian, and turkey subs, while supplies last.” McNece got involved with the sale because she wanted to be more involved with the church and she loves books. “I read so much as a girl that my parents used to ground me from reading,” she said with a laugh. Proceeds from the sale will go to Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS), a not-for-profit agency that provides apartment or financial services to people in the Elizabethtown, Rheems, Bainbridge, Mount Joy, Marietta, and Maytown areas who are experiencing homelessness, are
at risk of homelessness, or are otherwise in need, according to the agency’s website, www.echos lancaster.org/. ECHOS was recommended to Hershey by the MJCOG church council as a worthwhile recipient of funds. Hershey, who used to sort books for the sale in her home, now sorts and prices books in the church’s basement. Dozens of boxes have already been prepared. “I check the condition of each book and put the price inside the cover. I like sorting: It’s sort of like opening up a present,” Hershey said with a smile. When considering what her favorite part of the church’s book sales has been, Hershey paused, then shared, “It’s very rewarding when someone asks for a specific author and I can help by finding the right book.” Categories of books will include history, science, romance, inspirational, children’s, and special interest books such as cookbooks, craft books, how-to manuals, and more. In addition, there will be a special section of books such as classic Little Golden Books,
volumes in Braille, vintage hymnals, and complete sets of Bible commentaries. Record albums both 33 1/3s and 45s - will also be available, as will DVDs, CDs, audio books, and VHS. W hen asked why people should attend the sale, Hershey replied, “The books will be very inexpensive.” McNece chimed in, “And the proceeds go to a good cause. This is a familyfriendly event. Bring your kids!”

Dayspring Christian Academy, 120 College Ave., Mountville, will present a pilot school edition of Lerner and Loewe’s “My Fair Lady” as its 2019 upper school spring musical. The show will be performed on Friday, April 5, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, April 6, at 2 and 7 p.m. in the school’s auditorium. The show is being presented through arrangement with Music Theatre International. Lerner and Loewe’s “My Fair Lady,” based on George Bernard Shaw’s play “Pygmalion,” centers around a Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle. Due to her poor accent, Eliza enlists the help of a phonetics professor, Henry Higgins, who believes he can teach
any woman to speak so properly she could be mistaken for a duchess. Eliza hopes she will sound more like a lady in order to work in a flower shop. The musical highlights the comedic yet complex relationship between Eliza and Henry as they form an unlikely friendship. According to the school, “My Fair Lady” offers insight on the struggle of finding one’s identity, the power of words, and transformation. “It is a musical about words,” noted director Joanne Kroll. “They have power - what we say, how we say it, and what actions are behind them. Words can bring life or death.
“It is also about transformation,” Kroll continued. “If the characters in the show can be transformed, there is grace and hope for us all to be transformed by God when we allow Him.” “My Fair Lady” features a cast of 28 students from sixth through 12th grades, including Spencer Esh as Henry Higgins, Areanna Kroll as Eliza Doolittle, Cameron MacKilligan as Col. Pickering, Noah Sierocinski as Alfred Doolittle, Zoe Martin as Mrs. Pearce, and Jackson Stone as Freddy Eynsford-Hill. Donegal Swimmers Find Success in State Meet swimmer, Shonk came into the meet with a District bronze medal in the 100 backstroke, but hit some choppy water in the prelims, finishing just under his seed time with a 52.42 and placing 21st. “Ethan was not sure what to expect since he was a freshman,” said Kreider. “His goal was to move up in placing and be the fastest freshman there. He got a best time and was the fastest freshman.” Houck enjoyed the most success out of the five, earning two medals and just barely missing a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly. Following his number one prelim time of 49.13, which shaved .73 off his District gold time of 51.00, he found himself in a battle with Belle Vernon’s Ian Shahan. In an extremely close finish, Houck was a mere .09 off of Shahan’s first place finish of 48.83, touching in 48.92 to claim silver. In the 100 freestyle on Thursday, Houck qualified fifth with a time of 46.88, slightly above his seeding time of 46.47 to once again make the finals. In that heat he set a personal best time of 46.44, which was good enough for a fifth-place finish. “Jake works so hard in the pool and outside the pool and it paid off at States. I know he was happy with his time but he was hoping for the gold,” said Kreider.
Children’s Grief Camp Announced To help children cope with loss, Hospice & Community Care will host its annual grief camp for children, Camp Chimaqua, from Friday, May 31, to Sunday, June 2. The camp will begin at 5 p.m. on May 31 and end at 1 p.m. on June 2 and will be held at Gretna Glen in Lebanon. Offered through Hospice & Community Care’s Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, Camp Chimaqua is an overnight weekend camp for children ages 6 through 12 who have a loved one who has died.
The camp aims to help children explore their feelings, develop coping skills, and build self-confidence. Group and individual activities will be incorporated to help children learn how to express their feelings and share memories of their loved ones. Campers enjoy fun activities such as swimming and making s’mores around a campfire, as well as participating in grief-related activities. A trained, volunteer adult buddy is paired with each child
for companionship, support, and supervision throughout the weekend. There is a nominal cost for the registration fee, and financial assistance is available. Applications are due by Friday, May 10, and children will meet with a counselor to determine if the camp best meets their needs. Space is limited. Donegal swimmers Jenna Park, Ethan Shonk, Claire O’Neill, Jake Houck, and Jordynn Park all travelled to Lewisburg recently to take on the best competition Pennsylvania had to offer during the 2018-2019 PIAA championships held March 13-16 at Bucknell University. After the water had settled, the talented group walked away with four medals and three finishes in the consolation finals as well. Over a period of two days, each event begins with a preliminary heat which determines who will advance into the next round with the sixteen fastest times qualifying. In the finals, the top eight compete for medals while the bottom eight swim in the consolation finals. Sisters Jenna and Jordynn joined O’Neill in the girl’s competition during Wednesday’s 2A events with all three earning a second swim in the afternoon sessions. Fresh off a new school record set during the District Three championships in the 200 IM which earned her a silver medal, O’Neill placed 12th in the prelims with a time of 2:11.18. In her finals swim, O’Neill dropped slightly off the pace finishing in 2:12.05, to take 13th overall but was back at it on Thursday competing in the grueling 500 freestyle. “Claire made it to B finals in both her events,” noted coach Alison Krei-
der. “The 500 free is not an easy event to have to swim twice in one day, it takes a toll on your legs.” In her preliminary heat O’Neill finished 15th with a 5:20.09 and, despite bouncing back in the final race to drop 1.45 seconds with a 5:18.64, wound up taking 16th overall. Also coming off a school record in the 100 butterfly with a 57.22 in the District meet, Jordynn qualified ninth and, along with sister Jenna who posted a 23.93 to finish sixth in the 50 freestyle prelims, advanced to the A finals. In those heats, Jordynn placed 13th in 58.48, while Jenna, despite a slight loss in time, took seventh with a 24.17. In Thursday’s action it was Jordynn’s turn as she qualified sixth in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:05.08 and then placed seventh overall in the finals with a 52.42. Jenna, swimming in the 100 freestyle, missed the cut during prelims placing 18th with a time of 54.14. “Jordynn was coming back from having the flu so I was pleased with how she fought and glad she made it back to the A finals in the 100 breaststroke,” stated Kreider. “Jenna was also under the weather at the meet and with it being her senior meet I felt bad for her…Sad to see her have to finish her high school career sick at this meet.” As the youngest Donegal

The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable will meet on Thursday, April 4, at 7 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 433 E. Main St., Hummelstown. World War II veteran Harold Billow will share his experience. Billow will share his story of surviving the Malmedy Massacre on Dec. 17, 1944. As a member of Battery B, 285th Field Artillery Observation Battalion, Billow was tasked with determining the locations of German artillery so American artillery knew where to aim their shells. His unit did not expect to directly engage the opposing force, let alone face its tanks and halftracks. Billow and the rest of his convoy surrendered to the Germans. Billow, a 96-year-old Mount Joy resident, is believed to be the only remaining survivor of the Malmedy Massacre. Dec. 17 is also significant to Billow for a second reason, which is associated with pleasant memories. On that date in 1945, he married Vera, a woman he had met in England. Roundtable meetings are held the first Thursday of every month. Anyone with an interest

5K Will Benefit Students Earn Parkinson’s Foundation Academic Honor The second annual KnockOut PD 5K Run/Walk event will take place on Saturday, April 13, at 9 a.m. at Masonic Village, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown, during Parkinson’s Awareness Month. Registration will include custom finisher medals for all participants, music, post-race snacks, photos, and a race T-shirt for those who register by Sunday, March 31. The event will be a disposable chip-timed race. Packets will be available for pickup on April 13 from 8 to 8:45 a.m. Signs will be placed in various locations to direct participants to
parking areas and to the packet pickup location, which will also be the start and finish lines of the 5K. Picnic tables will be available for use before and after the race and “parklike” public restrooms on-site. Registration will end on Wednesday, April 10. There will be no race-day registration. Clarion University, Clarion, has announced that 51 percent of its student-athletes achieved Clarion scholar-athlete status, marking the second straight year that more than half the student-athlete population earned the distinction. In all, 174 student-athletes were honored. To become a Clarion scholar-athlete, student-athletes must have achieved one of several criteria. Students must either earn a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher; attain a 3.2 GPA or higher in two consecutive semesters, in the
previous year’s spring semester, and the current year’s fall semester; or, as a freshman or first-year transfer student, achieve a 3.2 GPA in the fall semester. Among those honored as scholar-athletes are Mount Joy residents Alice Fernald and Hayden Shertzer. Fernald is a freshman on the women’s soccer team studying secondary English education with a minor in Spanish. Shertzer is a sophomore on the men’s swimming and diving team whose major is nursing.

Saint Leo the Great School celebrated its biannual Vocations Day on Feb. 15. A total of 13 priests, sisters, and deacons from local area churches and beyond came to visit students, sharing their vocations stories and providing a glimpse into the life of a nun or a priest.
