Marking her 101st birthday on March 12, Janet Harple said she comes by her long life genetically.
“My mother lived to be 101 and a half,” Janet stated with a smile.
To celebrate her milestone, Janet enjoyed cake with friends at Paramount Senior Living in Maytown, where she has lived for the past three years.
“I like it here,” she said. “You meet nice people, and it’s a place where I don’t have to cook. I don’t have to clean.”
Born Janet Derr in Hollidaysburg, Janet was the youngest of five children.
“I had three brothers and a sister,” she said. “I’m the only one still here.”
Her father was a construction worker, and he brought the family with him as he traveled around to jobs.
“One year, we attended four different schools and my mother said, ‘Now, that’s the end of that,’” Janet recalled with a laugh. “She said, ‘We’re not traveling with your father anymore.’”
The family settled in the Elizabethtown area, and when she was a teenager, Janet got a job at the Marietta Depot, where she helped load and unload boxcars.
“I drove a forklift,” she said. “I drove three different sizes, including a high lift that went way up high.”
She enjoyed that job, which she did for about seven

There’s something almost magical that happens when kids cast a line into a pond and try their luck at fishing. That simple act can lead to a lifelong hobby and an appreciation for nature, and that’s what the Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA) hopes to accomplish at its annual Kids Fishing Derby.
The event will be held on Saturday, April 11, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the reflecting pond on the grounds

Transformation is underway at the former Rheems Elementary School, where construction has begun on a no-cost learning center set to open in summer 2027. When it does, the Catherine Hershey School will bring change not only to the building, but also to the students and families it serves.
The Elizabethtown Catherine Hershey School, located at 130 Alida St., will be the second location to open in Lancaster County, following the opening of a site in New Danville this summer. A third school is set to open in Lancaster city in the fall of 2027. Additional Catherine Hershey Schools are open in Hershey, Harrisburg and Middletown.
Each is funded by a $350 million initiative by the Milton Hershey Trust, and all are open to lowincome families.
“All expenses are covered for our families,” said Luanne Dohner, center director for the Elizabethtown Catherine Hershey School. The school will operate year-round and will provide classes for children age 6 weeks to 5 years.
The school will accommodate up to 150 children and will initially be open to families that live or work in the Elizabethtown, Manheim Central and Donegal school districts.
The Elizabethtown site has kept much of the footprint of the original elementary school, adding some new features that are found in all Catherine Hershey Schools.
Each school features a tree motif in the lobby, representing Milton Hershey’s philosophy.
“He believed if you plant a tree, you’re planting not for the

shade it provides, but for the people who come after you,” Dohner said.
A Family Success Center will be at the heart of the school.
“We have dedicated advocates for all of our families,” Dohner remarked. “Each family success advocate has about 20 families that they walk alongside of while they’re here. We have a two-generational approach to education. It’s a whole-child approach as well as a family success approach.”
While little ones are learning, adults will have opportunities to work toward their own goals, such as financial literacy or furthering their own education.
Participating in the advocacy program is required, Dohner said.
“We want to help the child, and we want to provide high-quality education, but we also want to help the family progress along, so they are not in the same place they started when they finish with our program,” she explained.
One wing of the new school will be dedicated to preschool classrooms for 3- and 4-yearolds. Each classroom will have a maximum of 17 students to three
teachers, who will work together to team teach and collaborate thanks to a space that encourages interaction between the rooms. Each classroom also features its own bathroom.
A wing on the left side of the building will house the infant and toddler classrooms.
The center wing of the building will hold administrative offices, including space for an operations manager, human resources generalist, health services and others.
“I love that it’s in the center of this building, so it’s equidistance from all of the classrooms and everyone is here together to collaborate,” Dohner said.
Unique features of the Catherine Hershey School include porches outside every classroom, so students have opportunities to get outside daily to use playground facilities.
A sensory room will provide a place for children to calm down and self-regulate, if needed, and an observation room will provide opportunities for therapists, coaches and specialists to review what’s happening live in a classroom without having to interrupt instruction.

A state-of-the-art kitchen located off the gym will provide breakfast, lunch and a hearty snack daily. Children will eat family style in their classrooms.
“They learn to serve themselves, clean up after themselves and other skills that hopefully parents will appreciate when they go home,” Dohner said.
An innovation studio will be stocked with materials for art and science projects, and an outdoor STEM garden will feature interactive water bubblers, shrubbery and greenery to represent different areas of Pennsylvania, a rock garden, a scavenger hunt for animals and more.
Dohner said.
Construction on the site began about a year ago and is scheduled to wrap up in the next few months. Staff will then be brought in for a professional development period starting this summer, with teachers joining in January of 2027 for their training. An opening date for students is tentatively set for the summer of 2027.
The first Catherine Hershey School opened in Hershey in 2023, and the model has proven to be successful, Dohner said.

Children will also have the opportunity to grow produce in the garden to use in the classroom.

Construction at the site has modified the original cafeteria into a gross-motor-skills room, with skylights added to bring in natural light.
“We like to say we bring the classroom out into our play areas,”
“Families are realizing everything we can provide and help them with,” she noted. “We’re here to walk alongside them to help them reach their goals and find the resources they need along the way.” For more information on the Catherine Hershey School, visit www.chslearn.org.

The Mount Joy Lions Swim Team has opened registration for another summer of competitive swimming and has announced Layne Sherk as the team’s new head coach.
The team is open to swimmers from the Donegal and Elizabethtown communities and surrounding areas. The team seeks to provide opportunities for young athletes to build
confidence in the water while cultivating teamwork, individual growth, sportsmanship, and lasting friendships.
The team has been a member of the Lancaster Summer Swim League for more than 30 years.
The swim team season runs from mid-May through the end of July.
The regular season consists of seven dual meets held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and a few
optional invitational swim meets.
The regular season concludes with a divisional championship meet, and then all Lancaster Summer Swim League teams gather for the league championship meet. Swimmers must be able to swim 25 yards without assistance before joining the team. For more information and to register by Friday, May 1, visit www.mountjoyswim.com.

of Donegal Presbyterian Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy. All youths age 11 and under, as well as all handicapped anglers who possess a current Pennsylvania fishing license, are invited to participate.
“Fishing gives kids a way to learn about the outdoors, have fun with their family and experience a bit of accomplishment,” said Scot Harlacher, a volunteer with DFCA and a member of Donegal Presbyterian Church.
“My hope is that through fishing kids will learn to appreciate and love the outdoors and this will lead to a lifetime of exploring and caring for our natural world.”
Coinciding with the fishing derby, the church will host a pancake breakfast open to event participants and the general public. It will be served from 7 to 11 a.m. in the church fellowship hall. Proceeds from the breakfast will support the church’s yearly mission trip to upstate New York.
“There is no need to make reservations for the pancake breakfast,” Harlacher said. “Simply show up that day with an appetite and consider a donation to the church’s annual mission trip.”
At the fishing derby, DFCA members will be on hand to help participants, but each angler must bring his or her own equipment and clean his or her own fish.
The fishing derby is just one way the DFCA promotes environmental stewardship.
“The DFCA was created in the early 1960s to be caretakers and stewards of the Donegal Creek watershed,” Harlacher said of the nonprofit. “We maintain a cooperative trout nursery with the PA

Fish and Boat Commission and raise about 3,000 fish per year from fingerlings to adulthood. These trout are then stocked in local waterways for recreational fishing. We also partner with various conservation groups, civic organizations and landowners to promote healthy water conservation in our local area.”
The fishing derby offers a way for the organization to promote its mission and support youths who want to try their hand at reeling in a big one.
“I encourage anyone to attend the derby to spend time helping their children learn about this enjoyable outdoor activity,” Harlacher said. “It’s fun to come even without kids, too, just to watch, gain information about the DFCA or enjoy breakfast inside the church.”
The event will be held rain or shine, and the church will be open for kids to get hot food and drinks or simply warm up for a bit, he noted.
“Our hope is that this event brings the public together to help kids have fun, experience a positive outdoor activity and learn a bit about some worthwhile charitable causes,” he said. “Our annual fishing derby is very special to me because over the years we have been able to introduce hundreds of children to fishing in a beautiful place that I truly care about.”
All participants must register with the DFCA on the day of the event. Parking will be permitted only in the Donegal Presbyterian Church parking area. Street parking will be prohibited. For more information, contact DFCA president Chris Brandt at 703-470-7585.

The colorful world of Dr. Seuss will leap from the page to the stage when Encore! Home School Productions presents “Seussical,” a musical adventure that weaves together some of the author’s most beloved stories and characters.
The show will be performed at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 29.
Narrated by the Cat in the Hat, the musical follows Horton the Elephant, who discovers a tiny speck of dust that holds an entire world known as Whoville. Among the Whos is Jojo, a child sent to military school because of his overactive imagination. Horton soon finds himself facing two big responsibilities: protecting the Whos from those who refuse to believe they exist and caring for an egg that the carefree Mayzie La Bird leaves in his charge. Along the way, Horton endures ridicule, danger, kidnapping and even a trial, while the loyal Gertrude McFuzz continues to believe in him. In the end, the story celebrates the strength of friendship, loyalty, family and community.
“‘Seussical’ is a combination of about 40 different Dr. Seuss books,” explained Elijah Smith, who plays Horton in the show. “The main storyline follows Horton when he hears a Who and also the sequel to the book where he sits on the egg. It also follows the lives of the Whos down on the dust speck and their troubles and trials.”
Describing the show as “fun and kooky,” Elijah noted that it’s also full of impactful characters.
“Horton is big-hearted, responsible and he tries to help everyone,” he said. “He does what he can for other people.”
Although he’s portraying an elephant and other students are playing animals, their costumes will reflect more humanistic qualities.
“We want the characters to

be seen as actual people, rather than as animals,” he said, adding that the costumes will hint at the animal being portrayed.
Preparing to present “Seussical” has been a lot of fun, Elijah said, especially learning to speak like Dr. Seuss.
“The entire show is in rhyme,” he said. “It’s actually easier to memorize lines when they rhyme, so that’s been great.”
Noah Arnold, who plays the Cat in the Hat, said while it’s been easy to learn his role, the rhyming is also challenging at times.
“The show is all music, so you have to say your lines over music and with a certain rhythm,” he shared. “It’s been fun, but it’s also been a learning experience. Most of the show is sung, but there are spoken lines in between songs but they’re still spoken over music, so you have to say it to the rhythm of the music.”
He described his character as “fun and mischievous,” noting that as the narrator, his character pops in here and there throughout the musical.
“This character has been hard

to portray, because he’s so wellknown,” Noah said. “I’ve studied the character in books, movies and other productions. It’s been fun to play, but it’s also a challenge to live up to.”
Encore’s production of “Seussical” will feature homeschooled students from 16 school districts, including the Hempfield, Elizabethtown and Donegal school districts.
Noah said that while Seussical may seem silly on the surface, with quirky characters such as Yertle the Turtle and the Grinch, it’s actually full of important messages and themes.
“One of the themes is, A person’s a person, no matter how small,’” he said. “We all matter. The show is also about living your life and

As part of the upcoming renovation project at Donegal Primary School, the current District Office will close on Friday, March 20 so construction can begin. Beginning Monday, March 23, the District Office will be temporarily located within the Donegal High School main office at 1025 Koser Road.
During this time, anyone needing assistance should visit the High School office. The District Office phone number will remain the same at 717-6531447, and staff will continue to receive and respond to emails as usual. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through this transition in support of improvements that will benefit our students and staff. R126420
being yourself and having fun.”
Elijah emphasized that audiences will enjoy seeing actors who fully embrace their characters onstage, and he’s excited to present some really big musical numbers.
“It’s a hilarious show, very entertaining,” he said. “It’s also got very touching stories with great morals.”
Added Noah, “‘Seussical’ is very family-friendly. It’s big. It’s colorful. It’s bright. All of the songs are amazing, and the dancing is great. And there’s a lot of great messages behind the stories.”

Zion Lutheran Church Marietta
Easter Sunrise Service at 7:00 AM in our pavilion.
The sun rises! The Son Rises! Alleluia! Christ is Risen!

years before she quit to stay home with her son, Dennis.
After she divorced her first husband, Clyde Kaylor, and she married Robert “Bob” Harple in 1963, a friend she’d known for a long time.
He brought four children to the marriage, and the couple had a daughter, Melissa, together.
In addition to staying busy raising the kids, Janet worked as a waitress at various locations, including the Hillcrest Supper Club in Elizabethtown and the Watering Trough in Mount Joy.
She also took an active role in the Women of the Moose, Elizabethtown Chapter 701.

Easter Breakfast - 8:00-9:30 AM in the Fellowship Hall.
The breakfast includes: egg muffins, French toast sticks, potatoes, fresh fruit and pastries. A freewill offering will be received for Donegal Conoy Food Bank.

“I am an 82-year member of the Women of the Moose,” she said proudly.
Over the years, she served as chair of most of the Women of the Moose committees, held additional leadership positions
within her chapter - including serving as Junior Regent and Senior Regent - and earned the College of Regents, the highest honor for a member in her respective chapter.
From 1969 to 1970, she was appointed by the International Women of the Moose to serve as Deputy Grand Regent of Eastern Pennsylvania. From 1976 to 1978, she was appointed to serve on the International Grand Council.
In 1988, Janet became the International Grand Regent, which is the highest appointment granted to the International Women of the Moose. She considers this to be her greatest life achievement.
Today, she doesn’t regularly attend meetings or activities with the club, but she’s still a proud member of the group.
Throughout her life, Janet has
shown that when she sets her mind to something, she accomplishes her goal.
When her heart doctor told her to quit smoking after she had a pacemaker installed, she immediately acted.
“I took my cigarettes out of my pocketbook, and I put them in my freezer for a year so I wouldn’t touch them,” she recalled. “After a year, I decided I could throw them out.”
She also drove until she was 93 years old.
“Then I said to myself one day, ‘Janet, you can’t see very well. You take this car home, put it in the carport and don’t you dare drive it again,’” she recalled. “And I didn’t.”
Janet enjoyed a long marriage to Bob, who passed away several years ago, and she credits a ritual she shared with him as the secret to her long life.
“I used to drink a Manhattan
every night,” she said. “After my husband retired, I said, ‘We need to have a happy hour.’ He liked beer, so he would drink a beer, and I’d have a Manhattan.”
Although she uses a wheelchair to get around these days, Janet is in good health.
Around Paramount, she’s known for her feistiness and her mental acuity.
“I like eating and talking with my friends here,” she said. “I also like to play bingo. I can’t play card games, because I can’t see the cards very well, but I like bingo.”
For the birthday celebration, everyone in the full dining room serenaded Janet with “Happy Birthday” before they all shared cake.
Janet smiled and posed for photos, thanking everyone for the party.
“It’s been a wonderful day,” she said.
