A Saucy Showdown in the Wild West

The Wild West will get a saucy twist when Donegal Junior High School students bring a pun-filled melodrama to the stage. With boo-worthy villains, cheer-worthy heroes and

a spaghetti sauce showdown that could save a struggling hotel, “Spaghetti Western … Or Mission Im-Pasta-ble” promises a heaping helping of comedy as audiences are invited to join in the fun.

The show will be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 20, and at

1 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, in the auditorium of Donegal Junior High School, 915 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy.

Game On at Kraybill

Two years ago, Kraybill Mennonite School in Mount Joy organized a basketball tournament at the end of the season, inviting a handful of local schools to compete. The event was a success, and it’s become an annual happening at the school.

This year’s Kraybill Basketball Year End Tournament was held on Valentine’s Day, and it brought together teams from Susquehanna Waldorf School in Marietta, Manheim Christian School, Conestoga Christian School in Morgantown and Kraybill for a day of friendly competition.

The final two championship games pitted Manheim Christian against Kraybill. The boys’ team from Manheim Christian won in overtime, 34-33. The Manheim Christian girls’ team won 20-7. The winning teams received a plaque.

“The annual basketball tournament brought together teams from across the region for an unforgettable competition,” shared Suzanne Snyder, administrative assistant for Kraybill. “Hosted by Kraybill Mennonite, the event featured an energized crowd from all the teams.”

“Have you always wanted to have your own garden bed, but don’t have the space, don’t have the knowledge, don’t have the resources to be successful?” said Aja Sides, a Master Gardener.

“Come garden at the Mount Joy Mennonite Church community garden. Your garden bed will be ready to go with everything you will need to grow healthy plants

and have a successful harvest.”

Sides, a member of the church, will offer assistance with any gardening needs as well.

“Jesus teaches us to love our neighbors,” said Mount Joy Mennonite Church pastor Tim Bentch. “Therefore, we are looking for ways to bless our neighbors by providing space for connection and fellowship. Since we have a Master Gardener, Aja Sides, in our

She emphasized that the games had the spectators on the edge of their seats.

“Young athletes showcased their talent and teamwork, diving for loose balls and executing perfectly timed assists,” she said. “All four of the teams played wonderfully. The boys’ championship game came down to the final seconds of overtime. A buzzer-beating shot sealed their victory, sparking celebrations on the court and in the stands. Everyone is looking forward to

having the tournament again next year.”

Located at 598 Kraybill Church Road in Mount Joy, Kraybill Mennonite School provides Christ-centered education for children in preschool through eighth grade. It has a long history of educating youths, opening its doors in 1949. Today, the school serves more than 230 students who represent 75-plus local churches and more than 20 denominations. Annual events at the school include a benefit auction held in

the spring and a Christmas Craft Fair and Celebration held in December.

The tournament provides an opportunity for the school to host other area teams while also spotlighting its own teams, Snyder said.

“We have a basketball program and hope to have other sports teams in the future,” she remarked, noting that proceeds from concession sales at the tournament support the basketball program.

Authors Set Book Launch

Lancaster County authors Dwight and Doe Kopp will host a public book launch for their new release “Primal Church” on Thursday, March 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. at High Cross Farm, 1610 Landis Road, Mount Joy. The evening will include light refreshments and a brief conversation exploring the themes of the book.

Drawing from Scripture and first-century context, the book invites readers to reconsider the true nature of Christian fellowship, authority and mission. The Kopps describe the work as “a return to the essence of the Christian experience - not a new model, but a recovery of something ancient.”

The event is free and open to anyone curious about the early roots of Christianity.

This marks the ninth collaborative release between Dwight and Doe. “Primal Church” is available through major online retailers. Additional information is available at www.primalchurch .org.

trying to take it because he’s trying to own the town,” explained Emma Carothers, who plays the dastardly Duke. “The town put up a spaghetti sauce contest with prize money, and the prize money is what they’re going to use to get the hotel back.”

The simple goal of creating an award-winning sauce gets complicated when the grandmother breaks her arms and her granddaughter, Petunia Pearl, has to step in.

“It’s up to me to finish the sauce, but I’m not a good cook, and I’m very clumsy, so I’m just trying to come up with a sauce that will save the Hoot ‘n’ Holler, the hotel,” explained Madeline Aungst, who plays Petunia.

The show features a cast of colorful characters, including prospector OneEyed Joe, portrayed by Patrick Cuda.

“My character is a gold miner,” Patrick said. “He has a son named Joey,

and we are both miners, so Joey is a minor miner.”

The pair is on a hunt for gold, despite the fact the town’s supply has dried up.

While various parties try to make a winning sauce, they also have to contend with the Bad Bunch, a band of outlaws roaming the town, as well as the antics of Duke Dreadful.

“Duke Dreadful is trying to sabotage everybody else in the contest, so his partner, Saucy Sally, can win and the hotel will become his,” Emma explained. “My character is also trying to marry Petunia.”

She noted that she’s having a lot of fun playing the villain, especially wearing various disguises and speaking in accents when she’s in disguise.

The show is interactive as well, with audience participation encouraged such as booing when Dreadful takes the stage or clapping for the sheriff, Kirk Ketchum, portrayed by Jonathan Miller.

While the antics on stage will entertain, activity backstage is just as important, said Evelyn Phillips, a member of the tech crew.

“Backstage, we are helping with the props, giving them to the actors, and we have had people painting the backdrops, which look really great,” she said. “We also have students doing the sound and lighting.”

She hopes audiences will come out for the show, noting that the cast and crew have been working for months to prepare for the performances.

“We put a lot of effort into this show, and it’s a very entertaining show,” Evelyn remarked. “It’s not a well-known show, but it’s a lot of fun to watch.”

Madeline agreed, adding, “It has a really good plot, and I think it will be a good show for people to come and experience something different. People from a lot of different ages will like it, because it has something funny for everybody.”

The humor is so pervasive in the show, it’s been hard for the cast

members to keep straight faces in rehearsal, Emma said, recalling a particular moment when her character has a frightened reaction to seeing the gang of outlaws.

“When I screamed the first time in rehearsal, everybody broke down laughing,” she said. “Our director had to remind us that we’re not supposed to be cracking up onstage.”

She thinks the fact that it’s not a well-known show works to the cast’s advantage.

“People won’t know the plot ahead of time like they might with other shows they know,” she said. “Audiences will just go through the journey with us on how the story ends, and I think that’s fun.”

Above all, Patrick said, audiences should prepare for an entertaining experience.

“This show will make people laugh,” he stated. “Audiences will have a great time, so come and see this show.”

All seating will be general admission, and tickets will be on sale at the door.

congregation, we decided to make the community garden our first project for the community. In the future, we hope to develop a playground, sand volleyball court, walking paths and pavilions.”

This will be the first year for the garden, which is open to anyone in the community.

“Community members who are interested in reserving a garden plot will (scan) the QR code located on the garden sign, which is placed on the lower end of the church property,” Sides said, adding that people can also sign up by visiting http://mjmc.church center.com/registrations/ events/3401930.

People must complete a contract, sign it and return it to Sides to get started. There is a first-

time, nonrefundable fee to reserve a plot, and an annual membership fee will be due each year.

“The plots will be rented annually from March 1 through Oct. 1,”

Sides explained. Plots will include both raised-bed and in-ground sites, and they will range in size from 2 by 8 feet to 4 by 10 feet. Returning gardeners may retain their previous plot each year.

People are welcome to plant any vegetables, flowers or fruit they’d like, but no illegal plants may be grown in the garden.

Garden fees will be used for inventory and upkeep of the site.

Sides, who is part of the church’s Bless Our Neighbors Initiative (BONI), said she was excited to help when the idea of the garden came up.

Breakfast With Easter Bunny Set

A pancake breakfast with the Easter Bunny will take place on Saturday, March 28, from 8 to 10 a.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 239 E. Market St., Marietta. The Easter Bunny will hand out candy to children age 12 and under.

“The church has many visions for blessing our neighbors, and one that seemed to be very popular with the church body was to create a community garden,” she recalled. “I was willing to oversee the project because not only am I a Master Gardener, I have experience creating garden spaces.”

She truly loves gardening, she said, noting she takes inspiration from Genesis 2:15 - “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”

“Gardening brings so much peace, joy and happiness to me,” Sides said. “When working in the garden, I feel I am serving humility’s purpose, to cultivate, to steward and to protect God’s creations. I am looking forward to

planting, learning and thriving with our local community members.”

She noted that she envisions the community garden as much more than a place to grow plants.

“It’s a place to grow friendships, skills and a healthier future,” she explained. “We believe that when people work side by side in the soil, they also plant seeds of understanding, compassion and love for their neighbors.”

A Garden Kick-Off Event will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 26, at the church, 320 Musser Road, Mount Joy. It will be open to the public and will feature garden tours, gardening demonstrations and refreshments. For more information on the garden, contact Sides at ajasides@gmail.com.

The breakfast will feature pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit and Easter treats, along with juice and coffee. Easter egg painting will be available to children at 9:30 a.m. There is a cost for the meal, with a discount for children ages 5 to 12.

The auction will include more than 20 original pieces of art ranging in value from $50 to $3,000 from 20 member artists. Bids will be taken from the floor and via a Zoom link, where the auction will be streamed live.

From 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., attendees can meet the artists and learn about how they create their art. A variety of affordable art pieces will be on display, separate from the auction, and can be selected for a donation. A reception will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., with food and drinks available and music provided by Temple Avenue Jazz. Those attending in person can register for the auction, obtain bidding cards, and preview all the auction artwork. The live auction will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Successful bidders will donate to ASPIE, which will donate to the individual artists.

Among a dozen new ASPIE artists are Carly Long and David Allen.

Long is a budding photo artist with a growing portfolio. Her photos feature the beauty of nature scenes and simple scenes of everyday life. Long lives with cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair to get around, and her camera is mounted to her wheelchair to allow her to capture photographs whenever the moment is right.

Allen is a retired contract sales manager and pastor who has found inspiration to paint from God. He first photographs his subject and then uses his photo as a point or reference to compose the painting. Among his favorites are landscape themes. In 2018, Allen experienced a life-threatening strep infection in his right foot and calf and almost lost his leg. He endured 18 days in the hospital, three major operations, and nine months of wound care. He still struggles to use his right leg for extended
