Donegal To Present “The Addams Family - School Edition” BY CATHY MOLITORIS

hey’re creepy and they’re kooky … and they’re coming to the stage at Donegal High School. Donegal Performing Arts will present “The Addams Family School Edition” on Friday, March 12, and Saturday, March 13, at 7:30 p.m. The show will be livestreamed for audiences to watch in the comfort of their homes. “The Addams Family” follows the tale of Gomez and Morticia Addams and their unusual family. When their daughter, Wednesday, falls in love with a “normal” boy, the family must figure out a way to handle it. “Audiences can expect a lot of laughter at this show,” said Ethan Steck, a 12th-grader who portrays Gomez Addams in the show. “It’s really a show about Wednesday Addams growing up and liking boys and wanting to be a normal teen, which goes against everything her family stands for. It’s also about Gomez keeping a secret from Morticia, which he’s never done before, and how he’s dealing with that.”

Danielle Brady, a senior who plays Alice Beineke in the show, said audiences can expect to see two very different families coming together when Alice’s son, Lucas, played by Gerson Malave, falls in love with Wednesday, played by Erin Kready. “It’s a show about two kids from two completely different worlds learning to accept each other,” Brady explained. This is the second time Donegal students have performed a livestreamed show, having done so for their fall production of “The Importance of Being Earnest.” “Doing a livestream is really different from a typical performance on stage, because you have to get used to there not being an audience and you won’t have the audience reactions like you normally would,” Steck said. Brady agreed, adding, “It’s really a completely different experience. You have to get used to learning where the cameras would be and delivering your lines to the right place versus just delivering them

Golfers Invited To Pinnacle Cup Tournament

For 20 years, Dr. Dale Treese has organized a golf tournament that brings golfers from as far away as Texas and Florida to play for prizes and give back to the community. This year’s Pinnacle Cup tournament will be held on Monday, June 14. The early bird registration deadline, which includes a discount, is Friday, May 7. Regular registration is due by Friday, May 28. Milanof-Schock Library Director Says Goodbye

Barbara Basile, executive director of the Milanof-Schock Library, will retire this month

For the past five years, Barbara Basile has been dedicating her time to promoting the programs and services of the Milanof-Schock Library. She will retire this month from her position as executive director. She said her time at the library has taught her the importance of community and the role the library plays in the lives of others. “In smaller communities like the Donegal area, we don’t have that many places where the community can gather,” she stated. “The library is one of them.” Basile came to Milanof-Schock from the Manheim Community

Library. She has worked in libraries since the mid-1980s, with a focus on nonprofit administration. Her husband, David, was in the Army, and the couple traveled the world. “Working at the library was a golden opportunity to be a part of a hometown,” Basile remarked. “For years, I didn’t have that ‘hometown’ feeling since we traveled so much, but here, I was able to really get to know people and feel like I was part of the community.” Although Basile had library experience prior to coming to Mount Joy, she said her limited facilities management experience proved to be a challenge on the job.

I developed this tournament to be a match play tournament with teams of two people.” The field is limited to 64 teams overall, with two divisions available for teams to choose from. The Tournament Division is for teams with players age 54 and under, and the Senior Division is for teams with players ages 55 and older. “In the Tournament Division, each team will play three nine-hole matches against different teams,” Treese explained. “Each hole is like its own mini tournament, and it’s a scramble format that takes the best score of the two players and compares it to the opposing team. Whoever has the lower score wins the hole.” Up to 14 teams will be eligible for the championship match

Sportsmen’s Association Plans Programs The Mount Joy Sportsmen’s Association, 85 Range Road, Mount Joy, will offer its spring air gun program. The program stresses safety and is meant to teach marksmanship skills in a friendly, relaxed environment. The air gun program began on March 6 and will continue through early summer. It is open to the public. Adults and juniors will alternate Saturdays, with both groups meeting at 9 a.m. Participants may join at any time. The air gun programs are conducted with .177 caliber pellets. Club rifles are available for those who do not own a match quality air rifle. Rifles

must have adjustable iron sights only, and no scopes or red-dots will be allowed. The next session of the junior program for children and youths age 9 and older will occur on Saturday, March 20. Parents are encouraged to stay and help. There is a onetime fee for ammunition and targets. The adult program using air rifles and air pistols will be offered beginning on Saturday, March 13. GEARS will hold its annual Eggstravaganza on Saturday, March 27, at Poplar Street Park, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. The event will begin at 9 a.m. Although the setup will be a little different than other years, the event will still feature all of the fun and holiday spirt of previous events, said Karen Eberly, senior program coordinator for GEARS. “This year we’re not doing all the activities we have done in the past,” she stated. “We have really revamped the event to follow COVID guidelines.” The Eggstravaganza will feature an egg hunt with staggered start times for age groups. Children ages 2 and under will kick off the event, with hunts at 9 and 9:30 a.m. Children ages 3 to 6 will begin at 10 and 10:30 a.m. Those ages 7 to 9 will begin at 11 and 11:30 a.m., and those ages 10 to 12 will start at noon and 12:30 p.m. The event will wrap up with an adult egg hunt for people ages 13 and up beginning at 1 p.m. All hunts are free, with the exception of the adult egg hunt, which has a nominal fee. “We’re asking people to register ahead of time for this event, and we’re limiting it to 40 people per time slot,” Eberly commented, noting that the new location for the event will also help control crowd size. “We are also limiting it to people who live in the areas GEARS serves.” Those areas are Elizabethtown Borough, Mount Joy Township, West Donegal Township and Conoy Township. Eberly said a disc jockey will be on hand during the event to play music and add to the festivities. “We’re going to have groups wait in their socially distanced areas before they begin, and while they’re waiting, the DJ will play fun songs to get them ready to

Historical Society Speaker Series BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Celebrate the history of Mount Joy by attending programs offered by the Mount Joy Area Historical Society. The society’s program series will kick off on Monday, March 15, with a presentation by John Brown on “Abraham Lincoln and the North Central Railroad.” Monthly programs will be held at 7 p.m. on the third Monday of each month through November. The programs in March, April and May will be held via Zoom, while the society hopes to resume in-person meetings starting in June, said Sue Hostetter, president.

“Our mission is to preserve and collect documents and artifacts from the Mount Joy area,” Hostetter explained of the society that formed in 1973. “We also have a mission to share these things and to educate the community about the history of Mount Joy.” The society is located at 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy. Pre-COVID, it was open to the public on Sunday afternoons, but currently, it is open by appointment only. Along with its monthly programs, the society houses a vast collection of Mount Joy memorabilia. “We have showcases on local businesses, nonprofits and organiza-

tions,” Hostetter said. “We have obituaries going back to the 1800s.” Additionally, the society has notebooks full of articles on local businesses organized by type of business as well as booklets available for purchase on a variety of topics. The speaker series has been a way for the society to encourage interest in preserving Mount Joy history, Hostetter noted. I think she’s helped make our library a place that people in the community want to visit, a place where they feel welcome.” Basile, 65, said she plans to enjoy family time in retirement. “If COVID taught me nothing else, it drove home the importance of being able to see family,” she shared. “I have a long bucket list.” She credits her staff and community members with making her job enjoyable over the last five years. “I have wonderful memories of the staff,” she stated. “I will also miss the people in the community. I just love talking to them, and I am so grateful for the opportunity. It has been a wonderful job.”

Seven Sorrows Catholic Church in Middletown is again selling chocolate eggs through Easter Sunday, April 4, or as long as supplies last. This year’s sale is limited to the varieties that the church normally sells the most of: peanut butter milk chocolate, peanut butter dark chocolate, coconut dark chocolate, and butter cream milk chocolate. The hand-dipped eggs will be sold for a fee per egg. The eggs have received regional recognition through various media outlets. In 2019, nearly 81,000 eggs were sold through businesses, through direct orders, and at Seven Sorrows Parish. Roughly 6,000 pounds of peanut butter, 870 pounds of butter/margarine, and 4,320 pounds of chocolate were used by more than 80 volunteers working over four months. Orders may be placed by visiting www.ssbvm.org and clicking on “Eggs.” Those ordering eggs must select a pickup time and location, and choices will include the parish’s weekly drive-through fish fry. Milanof-Schock Library in Mount Joy recently added a large selection of books for adults and children to its public collection. Funding has been provided by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act of 2020. Books purchased with the provided funds cover a variety of genres and topics in both fiction and nonfiction. As part of the national CARES Act, which became law on March 27, 2020, the NEH received $75 million to distribute to humanitiesbased nonprofits that have been financially impacted by the coronavirus. The Pennsylvania Humanities Council (PHC) received a portion of these emergency relief funds to grant to the statewide public humanities community. Called PHC CARES, this fund is designed to help sustain Pennsylvania’s cultural infrastructure by supporting humanities organizations during this unprecedented time. The PHC is an independent nonprofit partner of the NEH and part of a network of 56 state humanities councils that spans the nation and U.S. jurisdictions. It seeks to bring Pennsylvanians together to shape the future
