Lending A Helping Hand BY CATHY MOLITORIS

There’s no doubt the past few years have been hard for many people. To provide some relief, the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) was created in 2021. Pennsylvania received approximately $569 million to administer assistance to renters, landlords and utility providers who have been affected by the pandemic and economic insecurity.

While access to the application is available at Tenfold in Lancaster, there can be barriers for many people in the county, from lack of transportation to the site to confusion over the application process. To help, Friends of Donegal recently partnered with Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) and Tenfold to open an emergency rental assistance application site at DSAA, 78 E. Main St., Mount Joy. or the members of the Marietta Legion Riders, it’s hard to tell what they love more: riding their bikes or giving back to their community. Lucky for them, they have equal opportunity to do both.

Formed in the 1970s, the group has about 42 members, men and women who are either riders or passengers. Since its inception, the Marietta Riders group has had a mission of making an impact on the community. The group focuses on veterans’ organizations and events, but not exclusively, said secretary Colie Schmitt, who rides as a passenger with her husband, Robert. “Ninety-five percent of what we do is vet-related, but we also help others when there are needs in the community,” she said. The group collects items for Toys for Tots and participates in the Marietta, Bainbridge and Maytown Memorial Day parades. It holds biannual chicken barbecues and spaghetti dinners, and it recently acquired a mailbox, which it fixed up and will install in the Legion parking lot as a receptacle where the community can deposit tattered flags for retirement. In

May, the group will begin repairs on the Marietta Cemetery, working with a local Boy Scout troop. On the second Sunday of every month, from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m., the group holds an all-you-can-eat breakfast to benefit various organizations. On Sunday, March 13, proceeds will support Woodworking with Warriors, a Quarryvillebased nonprofit that serves wounded veterans. “We do a lot of research into the groups we support, because want to make sure they are nonprofits and they are helping the local community,” explained president Bill Rittenhouse. “All of the money we raise goes out to the door to the organization. We keep nothing.” For members of the Riders, the group provides not only a way to give back but also a chance to socialize with like-minded friends. “I joined because I wanted to ride with other people,” said Jerry Bush, “but I really like this group because they are making the community better.”

The 1974 graduate of Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) organized an all-class reunion for alumni of any class year. “Mike was a very social person,” recalled Peter Rios, a friend from high school. “He thought this would be a fun way for everyone to get together.”

The Donegal High School Counseling Office & Career Resource Center has announced that Sariah Marrero and Sam Rothstein are the Mount Joy Rotary Students of the Month for January. Students of the Month are honored by members of the Mount Joy Rotary during the club’s monthly luncheon meeting. Sariah is the daughter of Jose and Jennifer Marrero of Mount Joy. Sariah is a class officer, a Link Crew leader and the president of the Cultural

Awareness Team, as well as a member of National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Booster Club and FBLA. She plays softball and soccer for the school and is a part of the cheerleading squad. Sariah plans to attend college in Pennsylvania. Sam is the son of Craig and Gretchen Rothstein of Mount Joy. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the cross-country and track and field teams. He has committed to attend Lebanon Valley College, where he plans to study business.

Women’s Group To Offer Bible Study, Craft Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, March 15, from 9 to 10:45 a.m. A Bible study and a craft time will take place simultaneously; preregistration was required for the craft. Sandy Brandt will lead the Bible study, focused on Colossians 3 and titled “The New Wardrobe in Christ.” Brandt will speak about clothing oneself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Sandy, married to Glenn, has four grown children, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She is a longtime member of Chiques Church and lives in Palmyra. The Mount Joy 4-H Community Club will hold an organizational meeting on Monday, March 14, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Mount Joy Mennonite Church, 320 Musser Road, Mount Joy. In the case of inclement weather, the meeting will be rescheduled for Monday, March 21. Youths ages 8 to 18 who are interested in joining the club should plan to attend, along with a parent or guardian, and should plan to stay for the entire event. The evening will begin with registration, a project leader meet-and-greet, a snack and an activity for youths from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m., followed by an informational meeting and project request from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. The club will hold five additional meetings on the second Monday of each month from April through August. At the meetings, club members will participate in a business meeting, games, service projects, programs and activities and end-ofyear recognition.

Mumper, Champ Compete in Regionals

Donegal wrestlers Ruben Mumper and Owen Champ competed in the Class 3A District Three/South Central Regional championships Saturday, February 26, at Spring Grove High School. Mumper, who competed at the 145pound weight class, had qualified for the districts with a third place finish the previous week at the sectionals. Champ was a fourth-place finisher at the 215-weight class. Mumper opened with a pin, taking down Jared Porter of Central Dauphin East at the 4:58 mark of the first round. “In that first match, he was losing 7-1,” Donegal coach Nick Evans pointed out. “He hit a single leg takedown and pulled the guy back in and pinned him.” Evans gave a great deal of praise to the sophomore wrestler staging such a

turnaround at a districts match. “That was exciting to show that he could overcome a 7-1 deficit and get a district win under his belt as a sophomore,” the coach remarked. “That was pretty special - to be that young and to get that come-from-behind win in districts. He never gives up; he is always attacking. That’s the wrestling style I want to continue to have at Donegal.” Facing York Suburban senior Noah Rice, the sectional champ at Class 3A Section Four, Mumper lost by a technical fall. Rice came in with a 32-4 record and was the eventual fifth-place finisher on Saturday. In the consolations, Mumper lost in a major decision to Waynesboro senior Kaden Rouzer. Mumper is one of the returning athletes Evens hopes will lead the Indians next season.

Rodriguez improved on his 32-2 mark with a secondperiod pin and registered one more pin and a major decision on his way to earning gold. “We were hoping he would have some success at districts,” said Evans. “He wound up losing to the kid from Gettysburg. Hope Byers is mad at the groundhog, which predicted six more weeks of winter. “We are all waiting for spring,” said the director of Columbia Crossing River Trails Center. “We all have cabin fever.” But she has a solution: Spring Into the Park. The five-day event will be held at the center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, from Tuesday, March 22, through Saturday, March 26, and will feature activities for people of all ages. “We want to kick off spring and show you all the fun you can have here,” Byers said. Highlights on Tuesday will include bingo and trivia hosted by Columbia Senior Center, beginning at 9:30 a.m., as well as a free yoga class on the riverside deck with Vital Tree Yoga, beginning at 6 p.m. On Wednesday, March 23, a Bridge Walk & Talk will be held at 11 a.m., with a Susquehanna National Heritage Area guide offering information about the bridges that have spanned the Susquehanna River. At 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Monica Spiese will host “Tell Your Story: An Oral History Workshop.” W hile the activities on Tuesday and Wednesday are geared more toward adults, Thursday, March 24, and Friday, March 25, will feature lots of kid-friendly options, Byers stated. Columbia School District has an early dismissal on Thursday and no school on Friday, offering plenty of time for students to head to Columbia Crossing, she said. Thursday’s programs will include story time and craft time with the Columbia Public Library, beginning at 10:30 a.m., as well as a Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary show at 2 p.m. A chalk obstacle course will also be set up under the center’s

deck. On Friday, The Common Wheel will offer a free kids’ bicycle program during the day, and Raven Ridge Wildlife Center will present question-and-answer sessions about local wildlife rehabilitation throughout

“It can be an overwhelming process for somebody who wants to apply for assistance,” explained Deb Schleh, the program coordinator for ERAP at the Mount Joy site. “The wording on the application can be confusing, and people have questions and want to be sure they are doing everything correctly.” The funds can provide relief for people who need help covering rent, utilities or both, Schleh said. “Every story is individualized, and everyone is unique,” she noted. “Each application is evaluated individually.” Stacy Emminger, executive director of DSAA, said the idea for opening a site in Mount Joy came about after hearing about what was happening at ECHOS, an Elizabethtown-based application site. “They were getting a lot of people from Mount Joy coming in, so we realized there was a need for this in Mount Joy,” she explained, noting that DSAA became an application site in January. Schleh said she sees her role as part administrator and part counselor. She’ll help applicants with everything, whether she is assisting with paperwork or lending a sympathetic ear. “A lot of these people are living in what we call ‘the tyranny of the moment.’ They are just trying to survive on a day-

Applicants do not need to be a client of DSAA or live in Mount Joy to apply. The federal program is expected to continue until September or until funds run out, whichever comes first, so Schleh encourages people to consider applying soon. “If they are behind on their rent, utilities or both, or even if they anticipate being behind and they aren’t sure they qualify, they should contact me, and I’ll see how I can help,” she stated. “A lot of the people I’ve met have never found themselves in this situation before. His idea was well received. At the most recent all-class reunion, held in 2019, more than 150 people attended. Sadly, Ebersole passed away unexpectedly in June of 2020, but Rios wanted to keep the reunion going. This year’s allclass reunion will be held on Sunday, April 24, beginning at 2 p.m. at the Elizabethtown American Legion, 240 N. Hanover St. “A lot of classes don’t have reunions, so this is a way for anyone to get together,” Rios noted. “You can meet up with friends who graduated before you or after you. You can hang out with your siblings if they were in a different class. It’s just a fun time.” Rios describes the reunion as a casual get-together, featuring food and a cash bar. “It’s a time for socializing and a time to catch up,” he explained. Reservations are not required, and it’s open to anyone who graduated from EAHS. Ebersole was well-known in the Elizabethtown community. He was the announcer for high school sports, as well as

a DJ for WQIC in Lebanon and an announcer for Lebanon Valley College basketball and football. “He loved to personalize his announcing,” recalled Randy Garrett, who calls Ebersole his best friend. “He knew all the kids, and everyone knew Mike.” When Garrett and Ebersole graduated, they made a pact with three other guys to get together every year. Since then, they have had breakfast annually on the morning of Christmas Eve. “We never missed a year,” he stated. “The year Mike passed, we put a hat at his place. We said there would always be a seat at the table for all of us, even if it’s an empty seat.” Due to Ebersole’s involvement in the district, the Eliza-

bethtown Area Education Foundation has started a fund in his honor. “We are raising money to upgrade the sound system at the football field and in the high school gym,” said Garrett, who is a member of the foundation board. “Our goal is to install the upgrades this summer to have it ready for the fall football season.” Rios encouraged everyone to come out to the all-class reunion, adding that he appreciates the support of the Elizabethtown American Legion in hosting the event. “Come and catch up with old friends,” he stated. “Several retired teachers will be attending. The program will be held in the gym at Bear Creek School, 1459 Sheaffer Road, Elizabethtown. Players in grades five through eight will learn passing, setting, hitting, and blocking. Players will also learn defensive and offensive techniques and terminology. Trail Riding will be offered at Ironstone Ranch, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown, for individuals age 8 and older. One-hour guided trail rides will be held at 5 p.m. on Wednesdays, April 6 and 20 and May 4 and 18.
