“Anastasia” Will Bring Legend to Life

Family, identity, love and truth will all take center stage when Donegal Performing Arts presents the musical “Anastasia.”

The show will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 6, and Saturday, March 7, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 8. There will also be a free preview for people age 65 and up at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 5.

Based on the 1997 animated film of the same name, the musical focuses on a young woman with a mysterious past.

Loosely based on historical events, the show adapts the legend of Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia, who was rumored to have escaped when the rest of her Russian imperial family, the Romanovs, were executed by Bolshevik revolutionaries during the Russian Revolution. Years later, a woman named Anya, who has amnesia,

If you’re a basketball fan, you’ve no doubt heard of March Madness. Well, if you’re a foodie, get ready for Munch Madness.

The Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce will host the first March Munch Madness throughout the month of March, encouraging members of the community to visit participating Chamber establishments, enjoy special offers and collect passport stamps for a chance to win Mount Joy Money.

For the promotion, which began March 2, people may pick up a free March Munch Madness passport at the Chamber office,

Finding Fellowship on the Homeschool Journey

Homeschooling can be a worthy but lonely task. The Christian Homeschool Association of Pennsylvania (CHAP) wants to help.

The organization will host a stop on the CHAP Hometown Tour on Friday, March 13, from 4 to 8:30 p.m. at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy.

“Most homeschoolers feel like they are on a bit of an island and feel like they are going about this enormous task alone. But they are not!” shared Ginger Wayde, CHAP board member. “There are many resources available for encouragement, connection and equipping. CHAP provides many resources to do all these things for the homeschooling family. If they are wanting a boost to get to the end of the school year, this is the place to be.”

As Wayde explained, the Hometown Tour is a series of events hosted by CHAP designed to give homeschool families an opportunity to connect with other homeschoolers while simultaneously providing encouragement for their homeschool journeys.

“This year’s speaker is Lauren Gideon, who is with Education Independence,” Wayde said. Education Independence is a network of advocates for education freedom that promotes parent-led, private-funded and state-independent education.

Gideon will speak on the topics of “The ‘Well Done’ of Homeschooling - Beginning

Women’s Group to Meet

Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, March 10, from 9 to 10:45 a.m.

Susan Joy Simkins will speak on “Your Inner Healing Matters.” She will discuss how shame, heartbreak, and fear can distort how people see themselves, others, and God and how Jesus steps into the brokenness to bring healing. She will use illustrations from her life and Scripture to explain why inner healing matters for attendees and their walk with Christ.

Simkins has been a professor at Penn State University for more than 30 years and is also the award-winning author of “Divine Reversal,” which tells her life story.

To learn more, visit www.divine reversal.com.

During the program, child care will be provided for infants through prekindergartners. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717-361-2613 or Veronica at 717-626-7603 for more information and a copy of this year’s schedule.

Event to Explore Passover Tradition

“Messiah in the Passover,” a demonstration and meal showing how Jesus fulfilled the ancient feast of Passover, will be held on Monday, March 16, at 5 p.m. at Florin Church of the Brethren, 815 Bruce Ave., Mount Joy. This event will be conducted by Ari Hauben of Chosen People Ministries.

“Messiah in the Passover” will begin with the traditional Passover Seder table, complete with all the articles of this important Jewish celebration. Hauben will explain the symbolic meanings of the various items

of the Passover feast and highlight their relationship to the Last Supper that the Messiah celebrated with the disciples, giving special emphasis on the redemptive significance of the crucifixion.

The event’s purpose is to give the Christian community insight into Jewish traditions so that the Jewish

62 E. Main St., Mount Joy, or at the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy.

The passport should be presented with a purchase at each location to receive a stamp. Completed passports must be returned to the Chamber office by Thursday, April 2, to be entered into a drawing for Mount Joy Money.

“The goal of the event is not only to boost business during a traditionally quieter time of year, but also to encourage residents to try someplace new and support local businesses,” shared Michele Emenheiser, Chamber executive director.

Rachel Stebbins, Mount Joy’s community and economic development coordinator and a Chamber board member, helped spearhead the effort.

“Mount Joy is fortunate to have so many incredible eateries, and we know it can be difficult for restaurants to fully participate in some of our traditional community and Chamber events like Winterfest or Music in the Park,” she said. “We wanted to create something designed specifically to showcase our restaurant Chamber members and celebrate what they bring to our community.”

Participating members include DiMaria’s NY Pizza and Italian Restaurant, Dutch Country HandRolled Soft Pretzels, Grandview

Vineyard, Iron Born Bistro, Mosby’s Pub, Noel’s Café, Papa’s Pizza, Piper Belles BBQ, Rise Bake Shoppe and Coffee Bar, Rita’s of Mount Joy, The Joy of Sweets and Treats, Beanie’s Bar & Grill and The Gathering Place.

“This is our first year, and we’re thrilled with the turnout,” Stebbins remarked. “We’re hopeful this will continue to grow and become a fun annual tradition in Mount Joy.”

The Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to promoting, educating and supporting businesses and organizations in the Mount Joy area, with a goal to attract new businesses while providing resources and opportunities for existing ones to grow and thrive. With more than 200 members, the Chamber supports a diverse range of businesses, from sole proprietors to larger corporations and nonprofits in and around Mount Joy.

The Chamber also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including the Mount Joy Minnie Groundhog Day event, Music in Memorial Park, Spooktacular and Visits with Santa. Additionally, the Chamber supports local students through scholarships, helping to cultivate the next generation of business leaders.

With the End in Mind” and “Charting the Course: Education Independence - A Refuge for Generations to Come.”

Drawing on Jesus’ parable of entrusted treasure, the first session will encourage homeschool families to focus less on grades and more on faithfully stewarding hearts, priorities and purpose. The second session will help families clarify responsibility and freedom, define Education Independence and gain practical tools for confident decision-making and advocacy amid shifting education policies and cultural pressures.

“We will also be having a light meal together in between the sessions, which is a great opportunity to make new friends and make connections,” Wayde said.

People of all ages are welcome at the Hometown Tour, and coloring pages will be available to keep little ones occupied.

With a history that dates to the 1980s, CHAP hosts an annual convention, lobbies for improving the homeschool law, provides speakers and other support to homeschool groups and offers a

variety of homeschool resources.

The CHAP Hometown Tour will make five stops throughout Pennsylvania in Warren, Pittsburgh, State College, Scranton and Lancaster.

Along with the tour, CHAP hosts a YouTube channel of podcasts, located at www.youtube.com/ @chaphomeschoolpennsylvania 5953. Wayde is the host of the podcast, called “Chattin’ With CHAP.” The organization also has a page explaining the Pennsylvania homeschool law and offering support at https://homeschool pennsylvania.org.

Wayde hopes homeschooling families will consider attending the CHAP Hometown Tour.

“They can expect to be given a vision for homeschool, courage to continue this noble path and hope that the work they are doing now for their children will yield manifold benefits for their children in the future,” she said.

There is a charge to attend the CHAP Hometown Tour, and registration is required. To learn more, visit https://chaponline.com/ hometown-tour-2026.

Cure Cabin Fever at an Indoor Yard Sale

March may not have the best weather for traditional yard sales, but if you’re itching to pick up a bargain, Ruhl’s Church has you covered. The church will host its annual indoor yard sale on Saturday, March 7, from 7 to 11 a.m. It will be held at Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.

“There will be over 30 different stand holders participating in the event, and there will be something for everyone,” said Kris Gray, one of the event organizers. Items for sale will include collectibles, household items, antiques, toys, books and tools.

In addition to yard sale stands, there will be a food stand with a wide variety of items for sale, including egg sandwiches, homemade chicken corn noodle soup, hot dogs, barbecue sandwiches, baked goods and assorted beverages.

“Back again this year will be a table of new and used Bibles and devotional books for all ages that will be offered at no charge,” Gray said. She noted that shoppers may also sign up to be added to the church’s email list to learn about upcoming events and to be entered to win a Weis gift card.

Proceeds from stand holder donations and the food stand help fund the missions and ministry activities of the Sunshine adult Sunday school class.

“This class organizes and distributes food boxes for local families in need at Thanksgiving, Christmas

and Easter; supports our church’s participation in Samaritan’s Purse shoeboxes at Christmas; as well as hosts a special banquet for our senior citizens,” Gray said. “The class also sends cards to shut-ins and supports four local ministries, an overseas missionary and mission trips sponsored by the church.”

This is the 26th year for the indoor yard sale.

“Even if you feel you do not need anything, come and enjoy the delicious food offered by our food stand and support some great ministries,” Gray remarked. “This winter has been particularly cold and snowy, so this is an excellent chance to get out and shake off that cabin fever.”

Ruhl’s Church holds worship

services on Sundays at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday school for people of all ages is offered at 9:15 a.m. During Lent, Wednesday night suppers are held at 6 p.m., followed by a study series. These sessions will take place from Feb. 25 through March 25.

Purchase of items and food at the yard sale is by cash only. Free parking is available in a large lot on the church property, and the church is handicapped-accessible. Pets are prohibited in the building, as is smoking.

For more information on the event, call the church office at 717-665-3400. Stand registration is full for this year, but people may contact the church to reserve a stand for the 2027 sale.

“Anastasia”

begins searching for details of her past.

“She befriends two guys who are conmen, and they have a plan to convince her to pretend she’s Anastasia, a long-lost princess, so they can get a monetary reward,” explained Lily Grosh, a senior who portrays Anya/Anastasia. “In the process of trying to figure out more about this princess, she realizes she’s the princess.”

As Grosh explained, the show contains some deep themes.

H. Malone Remodeling

Right The First Time By Someone You Can Trust Call (717) 426-0019

“It’s a story about identity, self-discovery and family ties,” she said. “It has a happy ending, but it’s not the most expected ending, which is nice because it’s not predictable. I think the way the show ends is very good, and it will also have audiences wanting more.”

Senior Aurora Amato portrays the Dowager Empress, who is the grandmother of Anastasia.

“For my character, she’s a mix between being really happy and adoring her family to experiencing the tragic grief of losing her entire family, especially her favorite granddaughter,” Amato said.

As the dowager searches for the truth, she experiences a lot of ups and downs.

“This show is an emotional roller coaster,” Amato said. “Some parts of

the show are very intense and have a lot of tension in them, and then other times can be heartbreaking. … There’s sad moments, but there’s also fun moments and some scarier, more intense moments.”

Madison Finnley Mutterspaugh is a senior who plays Dmitry, a man who befriends Anya.

“Dmitry is a street rat. He doesn’t have a lot of decorum, and he’s used to fighting and defending himself,” said Mutterspaugh. “He comes up with a plan to essentially con the dowager into believing Anya is the princess so they can get rich.”

Although his motivation might be questionable, Dmitry is essentially a good guy, Mutterspaugh shared, adding, “He’s willing to do bad things for a good cause.”

While Anya is trying to discover her past, the authorities in Russia are still looking for the possible survivor from the executions, and that’s where senior Ryan Miller’s character comes in. He portrays Gleb Vaganov, a Bolshevik officer who witnessed the executions as a young child when his father was one of the executioners.

“He’s in love with/obsessed with the main girl, who he does not realize is a Romanov,” Miller said. “That’s where his main conflict comes from.”

He said he’s excited to present

“Anastasia,” because he considers it to be the best show of his high school career.

“‘Anastasia’ is a fluid show, with music through and through,” he said. “The story is told through the music. There are spoken lines, but a good portion of the storytelling comes from the songs.”

Mutterspaugh agreed, adding, “All of the music is beautiful. It’s not your typical music for a musical, which you might think of as really campy, poppy songs. This show is very orchestral, and it’s nice to listen to just the orchestra play. If you don’t like singing and dancing, the music’s really good.”

The cast members also emphasized the quality of the costumes and the set in the show, as well as the extensive dance numbers.

“There’s pretty ballroom dancing,

Passover

as well as some ballet,” said Grosh. “There’s a whole scene where we’re doing ‘Swan Lake,’ and we have some really talented ballerinas in the cast. There are some really colorful, fun dance numbers in Act Two that are really fun to watch.”

She said she’s proud to be part of a show that presents a fairy taletype story in a new way.

“It’s a really sweet story, and it’s not the expected trajectory of a princess story,” she said. “There’s a lot of drama, a lot of really intense moments that are balanced with humor, so there is something for everyone. And the music is fantastic.”

“Anastasia” will be performed in the auditorium at Donegal High School, 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.dpa .donegalsd.org.
