Making Magic In “Mary Poppins” BY CATHY MOLITORIS
hen it comes to live theater, the students at Donegal High School are taking things to new heights - literally. Several cast members will fly on stage when the school presents “Mary Poppins” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 11, and Saturday, March 12, with additional performances at 2 p.m. on March 12 and Sunday, March 13. The students are training with technical director John Coleman Jr., along with an outside company, to learn how to make magic on stage as the characters in “Mary Poppins” take flight. That’s just one example of the special effects audiences will see in the show, said senior Aubree Jones, who portrays Mary. “This really is a magical show,” she said. “You can expect to see a lot of fun things happening on stage.” “Mary Poppins” tells the story of the title character, a nanny who helps the members of the Banks

family learn to appreciate one another. Audiences may be familiar with the show because of the Disney movie of the same name, but the stage show varies from the film, said Ryan Bedi, a senior who plays chimney sweep Bert. “This show really dives into the Banks family and their lives a lot more than the movie does,” he stated. “It introduces new characters and gets more into the characters than the movie does.” “Mary Poppins” features a cast of 42, including younger students who portray the Banks children. Fifthgraders Julia Slobozien and Seth Manning are cast as Jane and Michael Banks, respectively. Gerson Malave, a senior who portrays Neleus in the show, said having a cast that includes students from the intermediate school has enriched his experience. “There is a lot of collaboration in this show,” he remarked. “It’s been cool to see everyone from different grades coming together to put on a really great show.”

Hit The Streets For Pride In The Tribe BY CATHY MOLITORIS
On Saturday, March 19, the streets of Mount Joy will be full of people supporting Donegal athletes. The second annual Pride in the Tribe 5K Run/Walk will begin at Donegal High School, 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy, with a 9 a.m. start time. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Donegal Athletic Club (DAC), a nonprofit established in 2009 to support sports and recreation programs in the district. The group held its first 5K in the fall of 2021. “We were looking for a fun event to get our student-athletes involved in,” recalled Abby Hoover,

found it by creating the SecondChancePA program. “This grew out of an attempt to find a new way to deal with the overdose epidemic and particularly the opioid epidemic,” he stated. “Everything we’ve always tried was not working. … Arrest or the medics were our only tools. If the person didn’t want to go with the medics, or if there wasn’t a reason to arrest them, we could do our best to talk them into treatment, but if they didn’t want to go, there was nothing we could do.” Through his job, Cunningham met the people who run Blueprints for Addiction

They are also people who are in recovery themselves.” Service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “A certified recovery specialist will come to the field, even if it’s 3 a.m., and will take responsibility for the person to get them into whatever treatment or care is appropriate,” Cunningham said. “Most other programs, the police will give the person a business card and it’s up to the person to call in the morning for help. includes a training component for police officers. “The No. 1 priority for our officers is saving lives, but priority 1A is smashing the stigma that exists between police and the people who need our help the most,” Cunningham explained. Since its inception, the SecondChance program has spread to every police department in Lancaster County, and now Cunningham is looking to expand the program beyond the county. He said the program is working, noting that the majority of people served by SecondChance enter treatment. Last summer, the program expanded to include a mental health component as well. SecondChancePA has also worked to turn police stations into safe spaces, Cunningham said, adding, “A person can walk in and say, ‘I need help,’ and we’ll get them the help they need.” To learn more about the SecondChancePA program, visit www.secondchancepa.com. board member of DAC. “We decided to try our second one in a different timeframe, between winter and spring sports, so we could get even more kids involved.” Funds raised will be used to support a variety of programs within the Donegal School District. “In the past, we donated to the campaign to build the new stadium,” Hoover noted. “We’ve raised money to install windscreens for baseball. We’ve raised funds for new wrestling mats. We’ve also supported the softball team with new fields.” The group works closely with Donegal athletic director Frank Hawkins to determine needs in the district and also supports the Donegal marching band. “Our biggest fundraiser is a golf outing we hold around homecoming in October each year,” Hoover said. “We’re adding the 5K to our fundraisers just as a way to continue to bring in funds to support our students.” Hoover noted that the race

Elizabethtown Fair Wins Awards Officers and directors of the Elizabethtown Fair Committee attended workshops and seminars at the State Convention of the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs (PSACF) from Jan. 19 to 22 at the Hershey Lodge. The State Association comprises 108 fairs across the state. Emma Musser, 2021 Elizabethtown fair queen, represented the Elizabethtown Fair in the State Fair Queen Competition, held on Jan. 20, 21 and 22. In competition against 57 fair queens from across Pennsylvania, Musser was one of five finalists. All fairs were encouraged to participate in the Communications Competition, which was also part of the convention. The competition includ-
ed categories for Fair Premium Book, Fair Premium Tabloid, Non-Premium Tabloid, Website, Video Tape, PowerPoint, Floor Display, Creative Fair Idea, Digital Scrapbook, Scrapbook, Scrapbook Cover, Brochure, Placemat, and Promotional and Advertising Campaign. Mumper, Champ Qualify for District Tourney

Donegal placed two wrestlers in the District Three Class-AAA championships based on the results from the District Three Class 3A Section Two Tournament, Saturday February 19 at Hempfield. Ruben Mumper claimed third in the 145-pound weight class while Owen Champ finished fourth in the 215 class. As a team, the Indians compiled 65 points and finished in a two-way tie for 10th place with Lampeter-Strasburg. The host Black Knights finished atop the team standings with 214 points while Central Dauphin (198) finished second. “He had a great performance,” said head coach Nick Evans of Mumper. “He punched his ticket to districts as a sophomore, which was a nice surprise.” Mumper blanked Jayden Engle of Hershey 7-0 in the first round. He then eked out a close 6-5 decision over Central Dauphin’s Arthur Ruud before a fall to eventual champ Reagan Lefevre of Hempfield sent the Donegal sophomore to the consolation brackets where he faced Ben Williams of Solanco. Mumper’s 6-2 decision vaulted him to the third-place match where he again faced Ruud. “Sometimes it can go either way - especially in a one-day tournament,” Evans said, referring to how the rematch might have gone. “He won by a point and had the same opponent again. “He wrestled with great
confidence and won by an even bigger margin,” Evans added. “The fact that he separated against that opponent showed his confidence was growing.” Both Ruud and Williams were seeded higher than Mumper, who won the thirdplace match by a 9-1 major decision over Ruud. Also of note, Mumper came in as the fifth seed and he finished third. “He stayed composed and peaked at the right time,” added Evans. Champ was able to bear down and notch a pin in his first match of the day as he decked Ryan Hottenstein of Elizabethtown 4:22 into the bout. In the semifinals, however, Champ came up just short. He lost 6-4 to Tyler Quinter of Milton Hershey. In the consis, he edged J.J. Plaza of Hempfield by a slim 1-0 score but was pinned in the third-place match, losing to Michael O’Hara of Manheim Township. “Owen’s work ethic of wearing down an opponent is a great example for the other kids,” Evans remarked. “He leads by example. “We’re very happy for him,” continued the coach. “He’s a very coachable kid and sets high goals for himself. It speaks volumes of his work ethic. I knew Owen was going to give all of his effort. Seeing him succeed is awesome.” Donegal’s Nicholai Brontzman suffered a close 1-0 loss in the semifinals of the 285pound weight class. That particular match was a classic
showdown between two of Lancaster-Lebanon League’s finest heavyweights - Brontzman, who brought in a 28-6 record to the championships, and Hempfield junior Caleb Mussmon (26-5). Mussmon, who would go on to face Township’s Tyrese Washington in the finale and would claim the 285-pound title with a 4-2 victory, stopped Brontzman with a 1-0 win. Brontzman was coming off a pin against Palmyra senior Jonathan Eisenhooth - a pin in only 55 seconds. The Donegal junior did not rebound quickly enough from the 1-0 loss. He suffered an early second-period fall in the consolation sems, facing Jon Frederick of McCaskey. He bounced back to pin Brad Candy of Elizabethtown 3:33 into the fifth-place match. “Finishing in fifth place, he is an alternate for districts they take the top four wrestlers,” Evans explained. “It was heart-wrenching. Brontzman had lofty goals all year. “Going into his senior year, we’ll see what happens,” Evans added. “He has off-season wrestling lined up. I’m excited to see what happens.” Taking sixth place in the 132-pound class was Landon Keller. “He had a nice close of the season - a good effort,” Evans said. “Keller had been battling injuries.” Keller claimed a 6-1 decision over Milton Hershey sophomore Sebastian Weader in the opening round but suffered a late first-period fall at the hands of Solanco star

Jared Fulton, who entered the tournament with a 25-5 record. Fulton went on to take second place in the weight class. Keller bounced back with a 10-2 major decision over Josh Foltz of Palmyra in his first consolation match. Being on the short end of a 5-3 decision with Warwick’s Zachary Zimmerman relegated the Donegal wrestler to the fifth-sixth place match where he lost by a fall to Township’s Anthony Cummons. Also of note, Mark Overlander wrestled at 120 and earned two victories against
two defeats. Overlander pinned Meki Walker of Milton Hershey 3:41 into his first bout. He lost by a fall to eventual fourth-place finisher Dallas Schorr of Central Dauphin. In the consolations he took down Sullivan Weader of Hershy at the 3:37 mark. Overlander’s day ended with a 10-4 loss to Elizabethtown junior Austin Reitmeyer. Also going 2-2 on the day was Ian Brown at 152. The Donegal senior needed only 41 seconds to record a pin against Township freshman Kaden Kemp. The next oppo-
nent was Aiden Robinson. The formidable foe from Elizabethtown came in with a 304 mark and pinned Brown while on his way to eventually finishing third. Brown went on to major Manheim Central’s A.J. Hondru 12-1 before losing to Solanco’s Wade Adams in the second round of the consolations. “I was happy to get two district qualifiers this year,” Evans added. “I’m excited about next year with this year’s sophomores and juniors who’ll be returning and a nice youth group coming up from junior high.”

Manheim Sportsmen’s Association, 552 Oak Tree Road, Manheim, has announced its upcoming activities. The club will hold its monthly membership meeting on Thursday, March 10, at 7 p.m. Anyone who would like to join the club may attend the meeting or obtain an application by calling 717-665-7729 or visiting www.manheimsportsmans assoc.org. RONALD (RED) E. FLOWERS Ronald (Red) Eugene Flowers, Sr. from Marietta, PA passed away on Monday, February 21, 2022 from multiple health conditions. Red was born in Lancaster PA on April 28, 1956. Red was an avid hunter and a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather. Red is survived by his sons and their wife's (Ron Jr & Kelly Flowers, K Bryan & Rebecca Flowers), Grandsons (Austin, Tim & Ronnie Flowers), Granddaughters (Alyssa, Emily & Storm Flowers), and Great grandson's (Jace & Remington Flowers). Red will be greatly missed but is no longer suffering and is now in peace with his Wife (Nancy Flowers), Daughter (Amy Flowers), Grandson (Larz Flowers), and Great Granddaughter (Callie Flowers).
