Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) executive director Stacy Emminger and assistant director Lexi Mercado want people to know that DSAA is open and available for them. “We’re open to everybody,” said Emminger. “We consider ourselves a community recovery center, and when we have these programs we want people in recovery to come, but we also want people in the community to come. Our goal is to bring people together.” In 2014, Emminger’s son, Anthony Perez, died of a heroin overdose at age 23. Emminger and other Donegal-area

Jubilee Ministries might be most familiar to people who have driven by or shopped at its stores in Annville, Lebanon, Manheim, Myerstown, and Palmyra, but there is a lot more going on behind the scenes of the bustling thrift stores as the organization aims to fulfill its mission to rebuild, restore, and renew lives. Income from the stores, which sell a wide variety of quality used clothing, furniture, electronics, and housewares, support what chief executive officer Ryan Newswanger listed as Jubilee’s three core avenues of outreach: a prison chaplaincy ministry, a prison after-care program, and

Rapho Township Schoolhouse To Undergo Renovations By Chelsea Peifer

The one-room schoolhouse located across the road from Erisman Mennonite Church, 8 S. Erisman Road, Manheim, is about to undergo interior and exterior renovations. On Sunday,

students in grades one through eight. Manheim resident Melvin Eby, a lifelong member of Erisman Mennonite Church, attended Lincoln School from 1939 to 1947. His ties to the building do not end there: His father, John Eby, went to school there before him and became ordained as a minister at Erisman Mennonite Church in 1945. Melvin can recall being dismissed from school on a Wednesday morning with his classmates to cross the dirt road now South Erisman Road - to attend the meeting at the church where it was announced that his father would become the minister. At that time, the minister at Erisman was responsible for preaching on three Sundays each month. The fourth Sunday service only included Sunday

school, Melvin said. Mennonite ministers were unsalaried in those days, so John also worked on the family farm and operated a plumbing business. Melvin and his siblings walked approximately 1 mile to the Lincoln School. “Our school was one of three schools in Rapho Township named for presidents who were killed in office: Lincoln, McKinley, and Garfield,” noted Melvin. He has good memories of teacher C. Emerson Rohrer instructing the group of 30 to 40 students and of recesses spent playing baseball. When the local grade schools consolidated in 1951, Melvin said, the Lincoln School building became available to purchase. For one year, the schoolhouse served as the home of Manheim Christian

Day School, before the private school moved to its Lebanon Road location. Erisman Mennonite Church purchased the schoolhouse in 1952. The structure remained vacant until Melvin’s father and mother, Mary Eby, purchased it in 1955 and converted it into a dwelling that they moved into in 1957. Tragically, John died unexpectedly from a massive heart attack at age 56 in 1958. Mary continued living in the schoolhouse-turned-home until 1985, when she moved to a retirement community. “The deed to my parents said that if they wanted to sell it at any time, the church would have the first chance to buy it,” explained Melvin. Erisman Mennonite Church bought the schoolhouse in 1985, and since that time it has been used for youth group and small group activities of the congregation. Elder Rich Nolt shared that in recent years, church members developed a vision for remodeling the structure back to its

original glory - and then some. Nolt said the purpose for the renovated space is to foster connections and provide a cozy, welcoming meeting place beyond the typical church setting. Project coordinator Dennis Nissley said work will begin in mid-March and should be completed by August. Exterior renovation plans include replacing the current windows with larger windows resembling those that would have been part of the original schoolhouse and installing a bell tower. Interior renovations are planned to convert the main floor into an open space that will be used for events. The space will also include a handicapped-accessible restroom and entrances, as well as a small kitchen. Readers with questions about the project or open house may call the church at 717-653-4791. More than 200 students from school districts and independent schools throughout the region converged on the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center’s (LCCTC) Brownstown, Mount Joy, and Willow Street campuses on Feb. 14 to compete in the District 4 SkillsUSA Competitions. Career and Technology Education students brought their skills, experience, and techniques to take part in dozens of different competition categories from Automotive Skills Technology to Criminal Justice and from Job Interview Skills to Dental Assisting. The day of competitions culminated at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster, where winners were announced and awards were conferred. Many LCCTC students competed in the district-level competitions at Franklin County Career and Technology Center on Jan. 17; students from a SkillsUSA-hosting CTC often compete at an adjacent CTC in order to avoid home team bias and due to the fact that not all CTCs offer every SkillsUSA competition category. Donegal’s Small, Blake Finish 5th in Districts by Vaughn Brown

Will Small and Garrett Blake stood as the lone Donegal wrestlers to advance into this past weekend’s District Three Class AAA Championship which was held at Spring Grove High School and while both medaled at their respective weight classes, neither one will be making the trip to Hershey in two weeks. Each earned a fifth-place finish, however, only the top four medalists qualified for the PIAA Championship. Small’s quest began with a round of 16 matchup against Eddie Wells of Northern York in a back-and-forth battle at 182 pounds that ended in a 6-5 decision for the Indian grappler. Following an escape at the end of the first period, Small began the second on the bottom and trailing 2-1.

Scoring the only point of the period on another escape, he used two takedowns in the third to eke out the win, despite not being able to hold Wells down and surrendering three points on escapes himself. Central York’s Seth Griffiths awaited Small in the quarterfinals but was unable to mount any offense, scoring only two escapes in the bout while Small used two takedowns in the first and reached neutral to start the third before taking Griffiths down again for the 7-2 victory. In the semifinals, Small met up with Timmy Smith of Central Dauphin and just missed out on a guaranteed trip to states with a heartbreaking 7-5 loss. In a wild scramble that began with a Smith shot on a double leg takedown with 25 seconds to go in the first period, Small was able to

Dayspring Christian Academy (DCA), 120 College Ave., Mountville, will host former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee at its next Remember America Speaker Series event on Friday, April 17. The doors to the event venue, the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, will open at 6 p.m., with the pre-meal program beginning at 6:30 p.m. Gallery seating, for those who will attend only the featured presentation, will open at about 7:20 p.m. A VIP reception with Huckabee will be held prior to the evening’s festivities, with attendance by invitation only. Tickets to the reception are included with

event sponsorship packages starting at the $2,500 level. The theme for the event is “Living Stones of Liberty … for Such a Time as This.” During the program, DCA fifth-grader Jessie Krieger will give her Headmaster’s Oration Competition-winning oration, titled “Liberty Outdated?” “Jessie’s title matched well with the Remember America Speaker Series mission,” commented DCA marketing director Lisa Becker. The event is expected to draw 1,500 to 1,600 attendees, certainly the largest audience Jessie has ever faced. “I’m really excited and really nervous all at the same time,” she said. Following an opening round, first period pin of Conestoga Valley’s Josue Marente, Blake met his toughest challenge of the night when he squared off with top seed and eventual 195 champion Jake Lucas from Cumberland Valley. Taking Blake down at will, Lucas gave four escapes on the way to an 11-4 decision which sent the Indian into the consolation bracket. In his first wrestle back, Blake fought off numerous first period takedown attempts by Harrisburg’s Xavier Evans who also exhibited good takedown defense as the two wrestlers entered the second scoreless. Beginning in the bottom position, Blake rose to his feet twice but Evans answered both escape attempts with mat returns. Rising up for a third attempt, Blake was able to grab an inside leg and hit a peterson for a fivepoint move. Evans was able to survive and get

grab an ankle and gain control of the hips for the two-point score, but gave up an escape with only one second on the clock. A Smith escape to start the second and another following Small’s takedown gave the Indian a 4-3 advantage before things got a little hazy as time ran down. Smith got in deep on a single takedown attempt while Small again grabbed an ankle as both wrestlers went to their hips on the mat. Smith appeared to gain control, but Small never relinquished his hold on the ankle and was able to cover Smith’s hips while Smith in turn hooked an ankle as the period ended. It was scored as a takedown for Donegal, but following a protest by CD’s coach and a consult with both officials, the call was changed to a takedown for CD and a 5-4 Smith lead. Additionally, a display of artifacts and media from the Faith and Liberty Discovery Center will be available for attendees to view.

The center is opening on Independence Mall in Philadelphia this year and is sponsored by the American Bible Society. As the April 17 event is marking the 10th anniversary of the Remember America Speaker Series, a special video presentation that includes clips of previous speakers will be part of the program. Becker related that DCA has hosted more than 18,000 people at series events. “We completely credit God with the ability to walk with the community,” Becker said. “We’re blessed and grateful that Lancaster has embraced this event and the school,” Myers added. During Preschool Super Science on Tuesday, March 10, at 10:30 a.m., preschoolers age 3 and up can engage in science-based activities that teach them about the world around them. Lego Club, for people of all ages, will take place at 6 p.m. on March 10. Legos will be provided. DSAA from pg 1 residents who saw and experienced the negative impact of heroin and opioid abuse in the area formed DSAA to deliver supportive approaches to addiction by educating, equipping, and supporting individuals, families, and communities. DSAA, which also now stands for Delivering Supportive Approaches to Addiction to encompass the organization’s goal to reach people well beyond the Donegal area, moved into its new space at 78 E. Main St., Mount Joy, on Oct. 1, 2019, and began hosting weekly 12-step yoga sessions and other events for the public. DSAA is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to noon on Thursdays, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Free computer access, coffee and snacks, hygiene products, and gently used clothing are available for people as needed. DSAA staff and trained volunteers are also available to listen and talk and to point people in the direction of helpful resources.

“The goal here is to make recovery commonplace. Recovery should be expected, because anyone that is struggling with addiction can recover, and it’s becoming easier to find resources,” Emminger shared. Providing a space for connection is an important part of the recovery process, she added, so that people have aftercare when leaving a treatment facility. DSAA aims to offer that as well as consistent support for people with loved ones facing an addiction. Programs centered on education, prevention, and awareness are also offered. Ongoing programs include a Moms in Recovery Coffee Hour from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays and 12-step yoga from 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. Children are welcome to join mothers at the coffee hour; however, separate child care is not provided. At yoga, mats are provided. Both programs are free of charge. The 12-step yoga is led by instructor Kim Stoltzfus, who is registered in Yoga and the 12 Steps of Recovery (Y12SR). A Family Support Group, open to people of all ages who have a loved one at

any stage of addiction, is offered at 1 p.m. on the first and third Mondays of each month and at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. Depending on scheduling needs of those interested in attending, times and dates may be adjusted. People age 16 and up are invited to attend a wellness breakfast from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, to learn about mindfulness and self-care. DSAA plans to continue offering a wellness breakfast focused on various topics for the public on the first Saturday of each month. Additional programming from 10 to 11:30 a.m. will include Art Heals on second Saturdays, board games on third Saturdays, and craft days on fourth Saturdays. Registration is required. Evoni (center) attended Kenbrook Bible Camp in Lebanon thanks to the camp scholarships that Jubilee Ministries provides for local children and youths who have a parent who is incarcerated or in another challenging situation. “Camp has been one of the biggest impacts in my life,” shared Evoni. Jubilee also offers a prison chaplaincy ministry and after-care program. summer camp scholarships provided to local children and youths affected by incarceration. “Most people know us from the stores, and they don’t necessarily know there’s a significant ministry going on,” remarked Newswanger. “Most of what we do happens behind bars and barbed wire, so no one sees it.” Seventeen chaplains are currently on staff with Jubilee and spend time with inmates at 10 prison facilities in Pennsylvania. That time is split between leading worship services and Bible studies and recovery groups, teaching life skills classes, and offering one-on-one counseling to men and women. “I often tell people our chaplains are very much like missionaries,” Newswanger said. “Prison is certainly a place where the Gospel is needed.” Taking the message of salvation and freedom available through Jesus Christ into prisons was how Jubilee got its start in 1972. “There was a revival, and a group of young people felt called to go into the Lebanon County Prison,” relayed Newswanger. What began at the prison with prayer and young adults boldly sharing testimonies of what God had done in their lives grew to include a thrift store in Lebanon to generate funds to support chaplains to go into area prisons. Several other store locations were launched as the entire ministry multiplied. The after-care program began in 1993 as a way to purposefully support people coming out of prison and transitioning back into society. “We’ve been doing re-entry since before it was called re-entry,” Newswanger said with a smile. Men may apply to be part of the program, which offers group housing with faith-based and life skills classes to attend, as well as job training and work at the Lebanon thrift store.

Newswanger described the program as very structured and designed to help each individual meet specific goals. “The change can happen, and we see it all the time,” stated Newswanger. “The most fascinating thing about this ministry is how someone can go from committing whatever crime they did and being at a very low point and then seeing the transformation that can happen if they choose to follow Christ.” Newswanger considers it an honor to watch men who have completed the after-care program then go on to become a successful part of the workforce, own businesses, pastor churches, and raise healthy families. For children and youths who are or have been impacted by incarceration, Jubilee offers one-week summer camp scholarships to local faith-based camps every year. The scholarships - which are in the average amount of $400 - are available to any young person ages 8 to 17 whose parents are currently in a prison served by one of Jubilee’s chaplains or are being served through Jubilee’s after-care program. The idea is that each individual will be able to relax and have fun at camp and be exposed to the Gospel. “The tragedy for the kids (who have an incarcerated parent) is that either mom or dad isn’t there. That means they are forced to grow up fast and have to become a parent to themselves or their siblings at a young age,” said Newswanger. “Camp is great because it gives kids a chance to be a kid.” To donate to support Jubilee’s summer camp scholarship program, readers may visit www.jub.org/summercamp. During Doughnuts With Dad on Saturday, March 28, at 10 a.m., attendees will watch “Despicable Me” while enjoying doughnut holes and chocolate milk or apple juice. Teen Anime is on hiatus until June. Credit Avengers will be offered on Saturday, March 21, at 2 p.m. Attendees will learn about good credit, how to prevent identity theft, and how to request and read a credit report and correct errors. 4-H Community Club To Meet The Mount Joy 4-H Community Club will hold its reorganizational meeting on Monday, March 2, at Mount Joy Mennonite Church, 320 Musser Road, Mount Joy. Registration, a project leader meetand-greet and an activity for youths will be held from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m., followed by an informational meeting and project requests from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. Five additional meetings are planned for April through August, where club members will participate in a business meeting (run by member-elected club officers), games, service projects, programs/activities and end-of-year recognition. In addition to club

meetings, participants can sign up to learn about various projects. Choices will include babysitting, beekeeping, cake decorating, canoeing/camping, floral design, photography, rocketry, sewing, and woodworking. Project meetings will be held separately from club meetings. Attendees are asked to bring a 2020 calendar to check availability for club and project meeting dates, in addition to bringing the set club dues payment per child. Dues are payable with cash or checks. Families are also asked to contact club organizational leader Katina Musser at katmusser@comcast.net with their name and email address to receive project details,

registration information, and general information about the club. In the case of inclement weather, the reorganizational meeting will be held on Monday, March 9. Member enrollment forms are also due at the meeting, and online enrollment must be completed no later than March 9. Instructions for online enrollment will be provided at the meeting. Youths who wish to join the club should plan to attend the entire meeting, as should a parent or guardian who can complete the required paperwork. BIA Spring Home Show Slated The Building Industry Association of Lancaster County (BIA) will welcome the public to the BIA Spring Home Show, which will be held at the newly renovated Wyndham Lancaster, 2300 Lincoln Highway, Lancaster. The show will take place on Friday, March 6, from 1 to 8 p.m.; on Saturday, March 7, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and on Sunday, March 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Attendees will experience an exhibit floor with local home improvement contractors and vendors. Visitors will encounter an array of products and services that include building, remodeling, smart home technologies, energy-efficient products, landscaping, kitchens, bath,

organizing, interior design, exterior solutions, financing services, and more. BIA members will have Hands-on House Children’s Museum at this year’s show. Attendees are invited to stop by and hear about the development of a new construction exhibit, sponsored in part by the BIA. Home show attendees will also have opportunities to win in a variety of sweepstakes and giveaways throughout the show. Some of the products and special offers visitors will find on the show floor will include the following: smart home technologies, green/energy-efficient products and services, indulgences for a bath, pergolas, fire pits, cabanas, patios,

kitchen designs with the latest convenience and aesthetic trends, home organizing products, garage doors, awnings and canopies, interior decorating and design trends, new home builders and remodelers, and aging-in-place options. Guidebooks will be available at the show, and they were also direct mailed to more 70,000 households county-wide. There is a admission fee. Children under age 18 will be admitted for free. There is no charge for parking. The Wyndham Lancaster will have a full-service concession stand at the show and full-service restaurant in the adjoining hotel.
