Get Ready to Reel in Spring
BY CAT SHANNON
“After this winter, we all need a little spring,” said Dan Robbins, a member of the Donegal Fish & Conservation Association (DFCA) and a committee member for the group’s annual outdoor show. “Come to the show, walk around, see what everybody has to offer and get ready for fishing and other outdoor activities.”

The 61st annual Ken Depoe Memorial Outdoor Show will be held on Saturday, March 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Maytown Fire Company, 160 E. High St., Maytown. It will feature vendors and displays, including information from local conservation groups, used hunting and fishing gear for sale, artisans, children’s activities and more.
A meal from Harvey’s Main Street BBQ will be available from
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will include a pork barbecue sandwich and two sides. Tickets may be purchased in advance for the meal by contacting Chris Brandt at 717-470-7585, and meals will be available to purchase on-site while supplies last. The deadline for preorders is Friday, Feb. 27.
Although the show has been held for six decades, it has been renamed for the first time to honor
Depoe, a founding member of the DFCA and a longtime advocate for outdoor education.
“He passed away since last year’s show, and we wanted a way to honor him and his contributions,” Robbins said.
The show will feature more than 40 vendors, along with tables of information from the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Marietta Fireworks and other groups.

“Our country was founded on a Judeo-Christian worldview,” said Dan Blank, pastor of Reich’s Evangelical Congregational (E.C.) Church in Marietta. “In these times in which we live, it is very important for Christians to know not only what we believe, but why we believe it. We need to understand our times and how we arrived at this point and what we as Christians can do to engage our culture today for Jesus Christ.”

BY CAT SHANNON
Students at Donegal Primary School (DPS) learned some new vocabulary words and discovered what animals do to prepare for the winter, all while meeting a local furry celebrity when Mount Joy Minnie spent the day at the school.
After making her weather prediction (an early spring), Minnie then visited DPS on Feb. 2, greeting students and sharing information in a program presented by Heritage Creek Farm & Education Center. It was all part of an opportunity to combine local lore with scientific facts.

With that in mind, the church will host a live Christian worldview conference called “Understanding Our Times and Biblical Path Forward,” featuring Del Tackett. Tackett is the producer and teacher of “The Truth Project,” produced in partnership with Focus on the Family; the producer and teacher of “The Engagement Project;” and the producer of the movie “Is Genesis History?” The conference will be held on Saturday, April 11, at Reich’s E.C. Church, 338 Stackstown Road, Marietta. It will run from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
“We all know that our culture ... needs Jesus,” Blank shared. “How do we as Christians engage our culture today, that embraces and advances a worldview that is so much against what we believe? That is what Dr. Tackett is going to be addressing.”
For the first two sessions of the program, Tackett will explain, from a biblical worldview standpoint, reasons for the changes in our culture. The third session will draw from “The Engagement

“Most of the vendors focus on fishing, hunting, wildlife and other outdoor activities,” Robbins said. “We also have lots of things for kids, including a presentation from Critter Connections. They bring live bugs and other things for kids to safely pick up and hold. Kids get a kick out of that. Big kids do, too.” Critter Connections will present a program at 1 p.m.
Tony Dranzo, known as The Addicted Angler, will offer “Fly Tying Demo for Local Trout” at 11 a.m.
“He’ll talk about fly fishing and show people how to tie their own flies,” Robbins said. “It’s a great program for anyone who is interested in learning how to do that.”
The DFCA will have a table, featuring tickets to win one of three prizes, including a custom-built fly rod and reel.
stock the Donegal Creek a couple times a year. It’s expensive to buy the fish, the fish food and pay the electric bill to keep the water aerated for the fish.”
Proceeds also support stocking of trout for the DFCA’s annual Kids Fishing Derby, held on the grounds of Donegal Presbyterian Church.
“We’re just local folks trying to spread the word to let others know that the Donegal Creek and other area waters in Lancaster County are great resources for fishing,” Robbins said of the DFCA. “We especially want to encourage young folks who may not be familiar or who are not yet into fishing to come check us out and see what we’re all about.”
Mount Joy Rotary Honors Students of the Month
The Donegal High School Counseling Office and Career Resource Center has announced that the Mount Joy Rotary Students of the Month for December are Hannah Olewicz and Noah Smeltz. Students of the Month are honored during the Rotary Club’s monthly luncheon meeting.
Hannah is the daughter of Mike Rambler of Palmyra and Lidia Bruce of Mount Joy. She is a member of the Donegal Performing Arts, Donegal High School marching band, color guard, Rhythm Singers, Modern Music Masters (Tri-M), and Lancaster-Lebanon Music Education Association. She is also a member of Big Brothers Big Sisters and peer tutoring and has
served as a teacher intern. Hannah’s plans after graduation are to attend college and become a high school math teacher.
Noah is the son of Jacob and Jennifer Smeltz of Mount Joy. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, peer tutoring, and Link Crew. He is also involved in chess club, Spanish club, and ski club.
Outside of school, Noah attends church at the LCBC Manheim campus. He participates in the Wednesday night youth group, volunteers in the tech booth, and edits videos for the church.
After graduation, Noah plans to attend college to major in cybersecurity and minor in mathematics.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the nonprofit DFCA, an organization dedicated to the restoration, conservation and preservation of the Donegal Creek and its tributaries.
“We have a trout nursery that we maintain and run,” Robbins said. “We buy fingerlings - baby trout - and then feed them until they grow to adult trout, and then we
DFCA members meet once a month in Mount Joy. For more information on the group, search for “Donegal Fish & Conservation Association” on Facebook.
As for the outdoor show, Robbins hopes people will come out for a breath of spring air in the midst of winter.
“It’s free admission, and it’s a great day for the outdoorsy-type person to have fun,” he said. “It really gets you in the mood for all the things you can do once the winter is over.”

PennDOT Posts Traffic Safety Survey

or
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is seeking input from Pennsylvanians on traffic safety and driving behaviors through an anonymous online survey that will be available through Saturday, Feb. 28, at www.pa.gov/dotsafety. The survey will help inform PennDOT on how it can continue to improve traffic safety and save lives across the commonwealth.
PennDOT invests nearly $30 million annually in federal grant funds statewide, partnering with educational and enforcement
grantees, to deliver programming each year to help prevent crashes, fatalities, and injuries on roadways. This survey seeks information on drivers’ behavior behind the wheel to better inform PennDOT’s program planning. The voluntary survey covers several topics, including seat belt use, impaired driving, speeding, and distracted driving, as well as bicycle, pedestrian, and motorcycle safety.
For more information on PennDOT’s highway safety efforts, visit www.pa.gov/ dotsafety.

“We want to take the narrative of what Minnie predicts and take it over into the domestic and wild animals that we have on the farm,” explained Cindi Hughes, who led the program with Natasha Herr. They were joined by Minnie and her handler for the program, Michele Emenheiser of the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce.
“There are a lot of signs we see on the farm that tell us spring is coming,” Hughes told the students. “And there are a lot of ways animals adapt to winter. Some decide they’re going to hunker down here in Pennsylvania, and some decide they’re going to go on vacation to somewhere warmer until winter is over.”
Hughes asked the students if they knew what various words meant when it came to animal behavior, including hibernation, torpor, migration and brumation. She also defined terms associated with Minnie and her prediction, including prognostication and proclamation.
Using puppets to demonstrate, Hughes and Herr shared facts about some of the animals that live on the Mount Joy farm.
“Groundhogs spend the winter cozy underground, under the snow to stay warm,” Herr told the assembly. “Eventually, they are ready to come out and ready for spring, just like we are.”
Explaining what hibernation is, Hughes said, “Some animals take a long winter’s nap. Can you imagine sleeping for five to six months?”
Students learned that reptiles and amphibians experience brumation rather than hibernation, that torpor refers to a sort of hybrid hibernation, where animals sleep and wake throughout the winter, and that some creatures have unique winter behaviors.
“Some frogs have superhero qualities,” Hughes said. “They can freeze solid throughout the winter and then emerge in the spring.”
Minnie - also a puppet - held each of her puppet peers as Hughes and Herr told the children about the animals.
“What shape do Canada
Women’s Group to Meet
geese fly in? Show me with your arms,” Herr said, while the young audience members lifted their arms into a V shape.
Hughes explained how monarch butterflies survive the winter by flying to Mexico, returning to Pennsylvania when the temperatures rise. She told the students about a chipmunk that lives on her porch who hides away to stay warm during the cold months.
Herr explained how animals such as the goats on the farm get ready for the chilly weather.
“We don’t have thick skin and fur, so what do we do when we’re cold?” she asked the kids. “We put on coats, gloves, hats and scarves, but our animals don’t have that. Instead, they grow thicker coats of fur to stay warm.”
Hughes described how, as the weather warms up, the goats will begin to rub up against a fence on the farm, scratching off their winter coats. Birds will then pick up pieces of the fur and use them to build nests.
After the program, students said goodbye to Minnie with hugs and high fives.
“I want the kids to be observers,” Hughes said of the program’s focus. “I want to be able to connect children to the world around us through agriculture and the environment.”
At her farm, Hughes presents a variety of hands-on programs covering topics including land stewardship, STEM, environmental literacy, fiber arts and more.
Her DPS program tied into new Pennsylvania state science standards, called STEELS - science, technology, engineering, environmental literacy and sustainability.
She hoped the children left the DPS program with a new understanding of how farm animals prepare for winter, how their behavior indicates spring is coming and how much we all rely on farmers.
“When you have eggs for breakfast or you drink milk at lunch or you wear wool socks to stay warm, you can thank a farmer,” she told the kids. “It’s not easy to be a farmer, especially in the winter, but what farmers do for us is so important.”
Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, on Tuesday, March 3, from 9 to 10:45 a.m.
Rachel Gehman will speak on “The Word Against the Weeds.” She will show attendees how to use the Word of God to uproot weeds - certain influences, thoughts, or habits - that are growing in their garden of faith.
Gehman is a published nonfiction and fiction author. She is also a homeschool curriculum editor; a co-op elementary teacher; and an inspirational public speaker for ladies, youth, and author groups. She holds degrees in business and in biblical studies with a counseling concentration. After nearly two decades

of employment in administrative roles, Gehman currently enjoys being a homeschool mom and lives with her husband of 19 years and her two children in Elizabethtown.
During the program, child care will be provided for infants through prekindergartners. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717-361-2613 or Veronica at 717-626-7603 for more information and a copy of this year’s schedule.

Project,” explaining what God
The idea for the conference came about as members of Reich’s E.C. Church were exploring Tackett’s Truth Project and Engagement Project studies and found they were encouraged and inspired by what they learned.
When Blank discovered that Tackett’s ministry sought churches willing to host a live conference, especially in locations it had not been before, he saw an opportunity to bring Tackett to Pennsylvania.
“We want to have an event like this so that we as believers can be equipped to and challenged to engage our world for Christ and so that we can learn how to defend and stand firm on the truth of God’s Word in our world today,” Blank explained. “We wanted to make this available to believers and churches in our area so that we all can learn how to better engage our culture and community for Christ.”
He said the timing of the program is especially relevant.
“On this our country’s 250th year, we want to rediscover our heritage and the foundation on which we were built,” he remarked. “This conference will aid in that endeavor.”
People who attend the conference can expect to receive engaging teaching from Tackett, Blank said.
“Dr. Tackett will show us from the Scripture what we are seeing play out in our

culture today,” he shared. “You will gain a deeper understanding of the primary battlegrounds in our culture from the family, to the church, work and government. Dr. Tackett will then lead us to gaze on upon the crown jewel of the nature of God, and we will be challenged to fulfill His real vision for His Church.”
He noted that Tackett is renowned for explaining biblical and historical truth in a dynamic and impactful manner, but in a way that everyone can understand.
“I would encourage you to attend because you will learn a lot and be challenged and encouraged in your faith,” he said, adding that Tackett uses stateof-the-art technology to engage audiences. “You will leave being challenged, refreshed, equipped and encouraged to share your faith with others more effectively and naturally.”
Blank emphasized that early registration for the conference is encouraged, because registration is limited to the first 125 couples or individuals who register. Day-of registration will be available as space allows.
