Mount Joy Will Host Chocolate Walk And Wine Tasting BY CATHY MOLITORIS
atisfy your sweet tooth while supporting Mount Joy businesses during the Chocolate Walk and Wine Tasting from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26, and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27. “People will purchase tickets and then come to the Main Street Mount Joy office to pick up an empty box,” explained Dave Schell, executive director of Main Street Mount Joy. The office is located at 55 E. Main St. With their box, Chocolate Walk attendees will receive a map of locations that are participating in the event. “They can go and get a piece of chocolate per location, and some places will also have wine tastings,” Schell noted. “We are asking businesses to offer handmade chocolate. We’re looking to give out homemade or high-end purchased chocolates.” Local wineries will be offering samples at some businesses as well. Participants who want to sample wine must be at least 21 years of

age and must show ID at each location, Schell said. Tickets to the event will be sold online through Main Street Mount Joy’s website and Facebook page, and tickets are limited. “We want to keep it to a limited number to encourage social distancing,” Schell explained. The walk has been held for more than 15 years and benefits Main Street Mount Joy. “The proceeds help us run our organization and help promote the downtown area,” Schell stated. “We also do it every year as a nice option to bring people outside in the winter and into our stores.” It’s also a great way to fulfill a craving for chocolate, he said, adding, “Last year, we had approximately 22 places offer chocolate. People will leave with a full box of chocolate. … A ticket to this makes a great late Valentine’s Day gift, too.” Schell said the event not only raises money, but also raises awareness of all the businesses that call Mount Joy home.

There’s a lot of power in plastic. That’s what Maria Wassell and other members of the Mount Joy Lions Club found out after they started a program to collect plastic and turn it into community benches. “I was looking for a project that would not be too strenuous because our club is getting older,” Wassell said. “I saw an article in a Lions magazine about turning plastic bags into benches and I thought it sounded like something we could do.”

Mitzvah Moms Give Back Inspired by a desire to give back, two local moms have created a group to help others. Mitzvah Moms was created by Gina Krouse of Lampeter and Gena Harting of Strasburg in the fall of 2020. Initially, the pair focused on collecting items for the home-
less, but they then shifted their mission to helping people affected by COVID-19. “COVID started hitting close to home,” Harting said. “ We knew someone at our synagogue who got sick, so we put together a basket for them. Then, someone in my moms’ group was affected. We started tossing around the

idea of creating a group called Mitzvah Moms because it sounded cute and also because we thought there might be other people who would like to do this with us.” The pair created a Facebook group and soon had almost 100 members. “Mitzvah” is a Hebrew word that means “good deed.” The friends use their Facebook group to create gift baskets to give to people affected by COVID-19. “The baskets include a new, soft blanket and self-care products to help with decongestion,” Krouse noted. “They also have snacks because everybody loves food. It’s a basket of comfort items. We wanted to focus on the comfort, warmth and support.”
Baskets are catered to the individual, and all recipients are kept as confidential as possible, she stated, adding, “We ask for some basic information about the person receiving the basket ... so they get a basket that really fits their needs and wants.” Mitzvah Moms took off quickly as word spread through the friends’ network as well as their synagogue, Shaarai Shomayim in Lancaster. “Our rabbi is involved with the Interfaith Coalition in Lancaster, and we asked him if he would consider spreading the word among other congregation leaders and passing names our way,” Krouse explained. The women said donations of items for baskets and

monetary gifts have been overwhelming, and in fact, they currently have more donations than people to receive them. “It’s a good problem to have,” Harting stated. “We’re facing the challenge of trying to reach out and identify more people who would like a basket.” Harting and Krouse, who have four children among them and homeschool their kids, said Mitzvah Moms has offered a way to set an example for their families while also making a difference in their community. They have been pleasantly surprised by the number of people who

have offered to help with their project. “The purpose for this goes way beyond our children and giving from ourselves,” Krouse said. “There are so many people out there who want to help and want to show their love for their community.” Although they are currently focused on the pandemic, the pair said they plan to continue supporting others once COVID-19 is gone. “ We’re already brainstorming ideas for our next projects,” Harting noted. “We are looking at the longevity of Mitzvah Moms and continuing to give back.” The group is seeking both volunteers to help deliver baskets as well as nominations for recipients of baskets. Donegal Hoopsters Continue to Battle

A scoreboard rarely tells the full story of a contest and in much the same way, a record cannot encapsulate all that happens in a season. This concept is particularly true for Lady Indians basketball. While the Donegal club still
seeks their first win heading into the final weeks of the season, the tenacious crew demonstrates just how much more there is to an athletic team. “This season has presented numerous challenges both on the court and beyond,” noted head coach Matthew Warner in his first year as Lady Indians head

coach. “I cannot express how proud I am of the way the girls have handled it all.” COVID quarantines, scrambled schedules, and a 0-10 record that can’t do justice to the hard work poured in by the group, are just a few of those challenges. Yet, upon further inspection, the results of overcoming adversity as a team remind us why athletics exists, and for Donegal, those results display a strong, resilient group with depth of character. “They just seem to take it all in stride and come back in the gym ready to get better,” praised Warner. Most recently, the squad faced a trio of losses on the road, falling behind Northern Lebanon 56-37 on February 16th, 57-31 at ELCO on the 13th, and 55-27 at Solanco the previous night. A different Donegal athlete stepped up to pace the offense in each of the three contests. Victoria Burton netted 10 against Solanco, Sophia Floyd supplied nine at ELCO’s gym, and Catie Weber knocked down a seasonhigh 10 at Northern Lebanon. Proving to be a reliable constant in all three games was second leading scorer for the Indians, Madeline Gohn, a senior whose leadership and effort can’t be overlooked. Gohn’s relentless efforts produced six, eight, and seven points respectively, but it is her attitude and guidance that adds even more to the team dynamic. “Madeline is an exception leader and captain for this group,” credited Warner. “She demonstrates her work ethic and positive attitude daily.” Taking a moment to point out the strengths of the team’s other two seniors, Warner went on to describe the progress of Madison Kaley (four points against ELCO), and Catie Weber who has had limited time on the court, competing in only half of Donegal’s contests so far this season. “Maddie has shown growth this season and has started to be more aggressive on the court as well. Catie has had a rough season but each time I see her she has a smile on her face-positive and ready to go,” he described. “Our seniors have been great. I wish I could keep them around a little longer.” With limited time remaining in the season, Donegal continues to improve and grow, no matter what the numbers read on the scoreboard. “They are starting to understand what I want on the court, and I am starting to understand how to communicate that to them individually. At some point, we will put it all together and get in the win column, but this season is all about growth and development,” Warner concluded. “We
are looking to build an identity and a program for the future.” WRESTLING Donegal senior Garrett Blake made the most of his trip to the L-L League Wrestling Championships on February 13th, climbing his way to the top of the podium in the 215-weight division to bring home an Individual Championship title. Blake’s journey to the top culminated in a decision victory over McCaskey’s Jose Garcia to claim the win. In order to earn his way into the championship bout, Blake produced a pair of falls, taking down Jacob Humphrey of Cocalico in the semifinal round as well as Bryce Houser of Cedar Crest in the quarterfinals. Six Donegal grapplers qualified to make an appearance at the event held at Manheim Township. Noah Hinkle (113), Landon Keller (120), Mason Ober (160), Joel Grillo (172), and Nicholai Brotzman (285) each earned the opportunity to compete with Ober having the next most successful day, working his way to a fourth-place finish in the 160pound division. Ober reached the semis after earning a technical fall over Wade Adams of Solanco in the quarterfinal round. In the semifinal bout Ober was pinned by eventual division champion Dylan Bard of Hempfield. “Next up is all the qualifying tournaments for the post season,” pointed out coach Nick Evans as he aims his wrestlers at a shot at Sectionals, Districts, Regionals and States in the coming weeks, where the opportunities to qualify are limited this
year due to truncated seasons and tighter qualifying fields. BOYS’ BASKETBALL After a week hiatus from competition, Donegal boys took court last Wednesday, and fell in a heartbreakingly close 63-62 loss at Octorara. The Indians jumped out to an early lead 15-8, and still managed to hold a six-point advantage at the half 30-24, but the Braves rallied for a big third quarter push and gained a two-point lead heading
into the final eight minutes. Top Donegal scorers Khalil Masden and Levi Sites came through with big numbers for the Tribe, netting 22 and 19 points, respectively. Luke Yunginger’s seven points and another six from Gavin Hawk balanced out the attack. The Tribe also put together a solid performance on the line shooting 12-of-17 for a free throw percentage just above 70 percent.

The Daddy Daughter Dance at Acorn Farms will feature food, fun and lots of dancing.
“Since this is our fifth year doing this, we’ve really learned what people enjoy,” said Phil Landis, owner of Acorn Farms. “We have people come in and register, and then we just set them loose to enjoy themselves.” The festivities will include two selfie stations, flowers, food and plenty of dancing. The menu will feature fruit salad, chicken tenders, macaroni and cheese, lemonade and cookies. Dining will be socially distanced, Landis stated, adding, “We’ll have widely spaced tables for two spread out throughout our dining room.” To keep with COVID-19 protocols, the event will also feature an outdoor tent for dancing. “This year, we will have a large tent set up directly in front of our building with a dance floor inside,” Landis noted. “We have a DJ, and it will be a phenomenal dance party. The girls love it. The dads usually dance a little.” The event is limited to 200 people, and participants are asked to wear masks except
when they are eating. It was important to still hold the event this year, even though some logistical changes had to be made, Landis remarked. “Holding the dance is a way for us to offer something semi-normal but still be safe,” he ex plained. “We’ll have social distancing, and we’ll have people dine in rotations. We’re confident we’ll be able to do this safely.” Because of the changes for this year, Landis will offer no-questions-asked ticket refunds up to 24 hours before the event if participants change their minds about attending or if the weather is questionable. said. Although donations of items are appreciated, she noted that she currently has nowhere to store them, so she is looking for monetary donations instead. Levengood is the chief operations officer of Mako Construction in Palmyra, and the company donated its excavation services to clean up the site of the fire. The Red Cross donated money to help the couple with clothing, food and toiletries. Currently, Jeffrey and Chrstine are staying with Levengood’s sister in Mount Joy, but they are looking for a more permanent solution. “They are pretty much homeless right now,” Levengood noted. “They need to find a place to live while they raise money to rebuild, and it needs to be a place that’s pet friendly.” Losing everything in the fire has been devastating for the family, she stated. “My mom had items from my poppop, who served in Vietnam. The club learned that Weis Markets in Mount Joy was a cooperating partner in the program, meaning the store would take whatever the club collected and give it to Trex, the company creating the benches. Trex sent the club collection containers and posters to advertise the types of plastic to collect. “For every 500 pounds of plastic we collected, we could earn a bench to put out in our community,” Wassell remarked. “It takes a lot of bags to get to 500 pounds.” In 2019, the group began collecting plastic at its twice-amonth meetings and also placed collection boxes throughout Mount Joy. The Siloam Ethiopia clinic in Harar, Ethiopia, is in need of a blood chemistry machine. “The blood chemistry machine will check hemoglobin count, cholesterol, blood sugar, and liver function,” explained Wegayhu Ketema, one of the founders of the clinic. Ketema went on to explain that the indepth blood analysis provided by the machine can help detect deficiencies and hidden diseases among the poor and homeless the free clinic serves. To start raising the $25,000 that is needed to purchase the machine, Ketema’s church, Ethiopian Evangelical Church in Lancaster, 175 Church St., Landisville, will offer a curbside Ethiopian meal by donation from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 6. The menu will include doro wat, which is a spicy chicken stew; misir wat,
peace and comfort to aligning one’s goals, thoughts and dreams with Jesus’ plan for his or her life. Christy, married to Andy, is a mother of three and a member of Chiques Church. She works as an ICU nurse at Hershey Medical Center. Classes are provided for children from infants to prekindergartners. Asked how much she hopes the meal will raise, Ketema refused to speculate. “I don’t want to underestimate the Lord,” she said. Ketema’s faith has already brought her far. A decade ago, the clinic she helped found in Harar was still a dream she had held since the age of 8. Raised in Harar, Ketema would see a nurse driving herself to work each morning and dream of one day becoming a nurse and helping her people. Ironically, Ketema had to leave her homeland to make that happen. “My mother sent us to England to learn English and then to India,” explained Ketema, who was licensed as a nurse in India in 1985. She moved to Djibouti in East Africa, where she worked in a private clinic and became a Christian in 1988. Politics in the Muslim country caused her to flee to Nairobi, Kenya, along with her fiancé, Demeke Getahun, who is now her husband. In 1989, the door opened for them to travel to the U.S. as refugees, relocating first to Sioux Falls, S.D., and then to York, where a Living Word Church was supportive of their church back in Djibouti. Because she was not licensed in the U.S., Ketema worked as a nurse’s aide in several nursing homes, eventually moving from York to Lancaster and beginning to attend Ethiopian Evangelical. After six years, Ketema obtained her LPN license. She received her RN in 2013. “I love what I do,” said Ketema. “The Lord has been so gracious to me.” In 1999, Ketema felt the Lord leading her to pray about the clinic she hoped to open in Harar. “In 2015, we organized a few friends and started a board,” shared Ketema, who traveled to Ethiopia to assess the feasibility of a clinic in 2015. The clinic began serving patients in 2018. The organization is in the process of digging a fifth well to serve the clinic because water is so scarce in the area. She also found another way to be creative with the paint itself. “I had so much dried leftover paint in the bottom of the containers I was using to pour over (canvases) that looked kind of neat on its own, so I decided to start making smaller things like keychains and magnets,” Werner said. For households looking for a creative outlet during yucky days this winter, fluid art may fit the bill. Adult supervision is required for using heat guns to remove bubbles from paint. Some fluid artists on YouTube and Facebook have also combined spray paint and fire, which should only be performed with adults watching closely and fire extinguishers located nearby. “Picking the colors, maybe stirring the paint, and moving the paint around on the canvas would be something the kids could do,” Werner stated. “Depending on the age and dexterity of the kids, they could probably handle the paint themselves, but for safety and preventing a mess, an adult would be better suited to handle the paint.” Werner’s favorite resources for fluid art ideas, coaching, and support include the Facebook groups and pages Acrylic Pouring Addiction, Fluid Art Studios, and Jerry’s Artarama; tutorials by Netherlands artist Rinske Douna; and the book “Get Started in Paint Pouring” by Nicky James Burch. Ultimately, though, people just need to take the plunge.
Free Tax Prep Service Begins The United Way of Lancaster County’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is now scheduling appointments for tax preparation. The Lancaster VITA is one of more than 12,000 VITA programs across the country that help people file their taxes every year free of charge. The service is available to anyone who makes $62,000 or less and lives in Lancaster County. The volunteer tax preparers at VITA go through at least 40 hours of tax law training and are certified by the IRS. Customers get professional service by trained volunteers who are equipped to identify tax refund
opportunities for customers. In response to the pandemic, VITA has modified the way it delivers services this year to keep both clients and volunteers safe. VITA now offers a totally contactless, virtual option through a partnership with Get Your Refund. Get Your Refund allows clients to securely upload their tax information and documents. They will receive a call from an IRScertified tax preparer who will prepare the tax return, review it with them, and send a secure email file with the completed return. There will also be Free File options and limited drop-off appointments at several locations throughout
Lancaster County. Virtual and drop-off sites began operating on Jan. 25 to ensure that clients receive their refunds as quickly as possible. To schedule a drop-off appointment at one of VITA’s tax preparation sites around Lancaster County, readers may call the United Way’s 211 referral service. Taxpayers can schedule appointments and obtain information about VITA locations, eligibility requirements, and other details by visiting www.freetax preplancaster.org. VITA also offers a free online program that allows taxpayers to file federal and state tax returns at www.myfreetaxes.com.
“Be patient, and don’t necessarily have expectations for what you want your final design to look like,” Werner advised. “Don’t be afraid to experiment with techniques, pouring mediums, paints, and colors. There’s a lot out there to use, and a lot to learn. You just have to find what works best for you.”

Additionally, courses and clubs include Lower School Choir, Performance Choir, middle school and high school choirs, and art. Further, students in fourth grade learn to play the violin while fifth-grade students all learn to play the ukulele. Students in grades six through 12 also have opportunities to try many new experiences through a wide array of clubs, ranging from Wire Art to Baking to Photographic Microscopy. The school’s Principle Approach curriculum includes many in-depth field study experiences, including time in Plymouth, Mass., to study the Pilgrims; Boston to study John Adams’ family; Gettysburg; the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter in Kentucky; and New York City. As a culmination to the Principle Approach education, seniors travel to Israel for a nearly two-week field study.
