Celebrate Seuss At The Library BY CATHY MOLITORIS

“This will be a fun time for the whole family,” said Jan Betty, director of children and youth at the Milanof-Schock Library, describing “Celebrate Seuss - a Library Adventure.” The Dr. Seussthemed festivities will take place at the library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, on Friday, March 4, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. “People will come into the program room at the library and pick up the supplies they need for activity stations we’ll have set up throughout

the library,” Betty explained. “All of the activities are Seuss-themed.” Each activity will have two levels, one for younger children and one for older kids, and adults are also invited to join in the fun. Each child will receive a goodie bag, and all participants will receive a ticket for a chance to win a prize. Costumed characters, including the Cat in the Hat, will be available to pose for pictures with families. Visitors are encouraged to wear costumes as well. “They don’t have to be Seuss-themed,” Betty commented. “They can come dressed

from ‘Frozen’ or ‘Encanto’ or any costume they like.” The library held this event for the first time last year, when pandemic restrictions caused the cancellation of its annual green eggs and ham breakfast. Betty said the Seuss celebration serves multiple purposes. “It’s a fun way to build excitement about reading, and it’s a way to give kids a visual experience,” she stated. “If they meet up with Yertle the Turtle, they might want to read that book.” It’s also an opportunity for people who are not familiar with the library to see what the place has to offer, she said, noting, “They will get to go the whole way around the library and see what the library is all about.”

Outside the home, that healing can continue in the Serenity Gardens, situated on the 7.4-acre grounds of Riverview Tower, home of The GateHouse’s Residential Extended Care for women. of a waterfall and lighted brick paths - was completed in December, with plans for planting flowers and installing benches and engraved bricks scheduled for the spring. “When we held our grand opening for the house, we wondered, ‘How can we get the community, and potential donors, more invested in what we’re doing here?’” recalled Keith Stoudt, director of support services for The GateHouse. “The garden offers a resource beyond clinical services. It’s about helping the whole person.” Stoudt knows what he’s talking about. A recovering addict who got clean in 2005, he said he personally benefited from being outside in nature. “I know that in your recovery journey, you can get so much out of a place that provides a quiet space to reflect, recharge and center yourself,” he stated. “For me, I do a lot of meditation and prayer. I need that spiritual connection. That’s what we’re hoping the gardens will provide for the women here.” See Reflect pg 3

Winter might not seem like yard sale season, but if you can’t get outside for a bargain, you can still find deals inside at the Ruhl’s Church 22nd annual indoor yard sale. The event will be held in the church fellowship hall, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, from 7 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 5. “We have 32 stands selling all varieties of items,” said Kris Gray, one of the event organizers. “Friends and family of church members and people from the community have stands. Some people have had a stand for years.”

In addition to supporting the church, the yard sale serves another purpose, said Barb Dunmire, one of the event organizers. “It’s a chance to reach out to the community,” she stated. “I personally really like to talk to the people who come out year after year. I like the relationships you build with people you don’t see from one yard sale to the next. It’s nice to chat and catch up.” She emphasized that the event is handicapped-accessible and open no matter how chilly the weather is outside. “It’s a really convenient way to go to a bunch of yard sales all in one place, rather than having to go to individual houses,” she said. “People are itching to get out and get their yard sale fix, and they can do that here.” Neither pets nor smoking is permitted inside the building. While the gardens are started, there is still work to be done. Plans include expanding the brick paths down to bus stops on the main road to provide the women with easy access to transportation. A greenhouse will be added onsite, offering hands-on gardening opportunities for the residents, and Stoudt said plans are in the works to create walking trails throughout the woods on the property. He noted he’s already received calls from local churches and organizations that want to volunteer in the gardens, and he’s excited about that. “We want to invite the community in to see what we’re all about here,” he said. “We want the women here to get involved in volunteer work in the community as well. We’re doing everything we can to reduce the stigma associated with people in recovery.” And he’s looking for additional donors for everything from purchasing an engraved brick to planting a

tree or sponsoring a bench. When The GateHouse opened Riverview Tower in 2019, it transformed a late 19th-century house into a home for up to 30 women, who can live in the house for up to 90 days before moving to transitional housing. With headquarters in downtown Lancaster, The GateHouse operates a behavioral health outpatient center and other extended-care residences as well as transitional living homes in Lancaster County. Stoudt said the organization may use the Serenity Gardens as a model for similar projects at its other locations. “We are hoping the women will use the gardens as a place to relax and reflect,” Stoudt said. “It’s another tool on their recovery journey.” A grand opening of the Serenity Gardens is planned for the spring, but a date has not been set yet. Civic from pg 1 who is the secretary of the association. “We have a representative from each organization in Maytown, and we’ll be meeting four times a year as a group.” The idea for the association is not a new one, Good said. “There used to be a civic association many years ago,” she recalled. “In 1960, there was a bicentennial committee, and after the bicentennial was over, they said, ‘ We should have an organization here in town that can act like a clearinghouse for information. We should all work together for the town.’” For years, that association held events and raised funds for Maytown projects, such as the beautification of the Maytown Square. “Any time there was anything going on in town, the civic association was a part of it,” Good stated. Fast forward a few decades, and the original civic association had dissolved, but the interest in promoting Maytown organi-

zations had not. In 2019, Maytown resident Mike Guinivan proposed bringing the association back. “He said we should all know what each other is doing, because many times we plan events that are happening on the same day because we didn’t know,” Good noted. Guinivan passed away in 2020, before the new civic association could take off, but there was enough interest from others in Maytown to continue his vision. Using the constitution and bylaws of the old civic association, the new group officially launched in 2021, holding its first meeting in June of last year. “Our mission statement is to be a representative group whose purpose is to advance, promote and support local organizations and to maintain and manage the open space located within the Route 743 right of way, otherwise known as Maytown Center Square,”

Florin Church of the Brethren welcomed Mark Paden as its new director of discipleship, effective Jan. 1. His first Sunday at Florin was Jan. 9, when he and his wife, Cristina, were introduced to the congregation. A fellowship meal took place after the worship service. Mark’s responsibilities at Florin will include developing the younger generation of church attendees. He will be charged with planning programs to help others grow in their relationship with Jesus, and he will also be involved in the church’s outreach ministries. Mark was previously the lead pastor at Host Church in Bernville. He has experience in young adult ministries and has served as a director of youth and discipleship. Mark received a Master of Arts in religion with a concentration in pastoral ministries from Liberty Theological Baptist Seminary in Lynchburg, Va. He previously received a Bachelor of Science in business administration from Edinboro University in Edinboro. Cristina is the director of Rainbow’s End Youth Center (REYS) in Mount Joy. For almost 100 years, Holy Trinity Catholic Church members have been serving up “a little bite of heaven.” That’s how they describe their homemade fastnachts, which will be sold at the church beginning on Monday, Feb. 28. Sales will continue Tuesday, March 1, and Wednesday, March 2, followed by Mondays and Wednesdays through March 23. Preparing the fastnachts which volunteer Jim Knapp said number 620 dozen each day - requires a full battalion of workers. “ We make the dough at night, and it rises overnight,” explained volunteer Karen Sahd, noting that the dough rises in special cupboards set up in Our Lady of the Angels School across the street from the church. “The next day, it gets rolled out and rises more, and then it’s fried.” The rolling process is an allday job that begins at 4 a.m., and it includes exact steps, said volunteer Betty Mahan. “There is a specific way you

have to roll them, and you never turn the dough,” she remarked. “You release the dough up from the table before you cut them. It’s a specific process.” Knapp, who has been volunteering with the fastnacht bake for about 15 years, is in the charge of the frying room and the glazing room. The fastnachts are available by the dozen either plain or glazed, and Knapp said the latter is the most popular choice. “Sixty-seven percent of what we sell are the glazed ones,” he noted, adding that the fastnachts are dunked fully in the glaze. Knapp explained that Holy Trinity’s fastnachts are nothing like a doughnut, although both have a hole in the middle. “A doughnut is cakebased, and these use yeast dough,” he said. “Ours have a unique taste you won’t find anywhere else.” Fastnachts were traditionally made on Shrove Tuesday to use up lard before Lent, which runs from Ash Wednesday to Easter. “We don’t use lard in ours, and we don’t stop making them the

The Donegal High School Counseling Office & Career Resource Center has announced that Christine “C.C.” Emswiler and Conner Hyle are the Mount Joy Rotary Students of the Month for December. Students of the Month are honored by members of the Mount Joy Rotary during the club’s monthly luncheon meeting. C.C. is the daughter of Dennis and Christine Emswiler of Maytown. She is on the field hockey team and has started as goalie for three years. She is also a member of the Key Club, where she heads a project called Letters From Home. This project entails collecting and distributing thank you cards to active-duty and retired service

members. C.C. is also a member of the National Honor Society. Outside of school, C.C. has assisted with summer camps at Under the Willow Preschool. In August, she enlisted in the United States Army, and she will ship out shortly after graduation. Her goal is to become a combat medic specialist. Conner is the son of Jason and Lisa Hyle of Mount Joy. He is active in many groups at Donegal, including the football team, tennis team, snowboarding club, German club and chess club. He is also a member of the National Honor Society. After graduation, Conner plans to attend Penn State University to major in electrical engineering.

He is an active member of ABC Keystone, most recently serving as first vice chair of the board and chair of the Budget and Finance Committee. He has also served on both the legislative and membership committees and on the Keystone Chapter’s education committee and was the chair in 2014. Eldredge has been a member of the Construction Financial Management Association since 1994 and earned his Certified Construction Industry Financial Person designation in 2014. This credential recognizes levels of expertise in the profession and professional standards in construction financial management. To become certified, applicants must complete testing in the disciplines of finance, IT, human resources and law. Actively involved in many associations, Eldredge has previously been president of ACCESS-York and Leadership York, as well as treasurer of York Habitat for Humanity and the Dover Area Soccer Association. He holds a Bachelor of Science in accounting from York College of Pennsylvania and earned his CPA license in 1989. Eldredge and his wife, Kimberly, live in Dover in York County. Seven Sorrows Catholic Church in Middletown is again selling chocolate eggs through Easter Sunday, April 17, or as long as supplies last. Customers may purchase peanut butter, coconut, or butter cream eggs coated in either milk chocolate or dark chocolate. The hand-dipped eggs will be sold Charlotte Kovalchik coats eggs in chocolate. for a fee per egg.

The eggs have received regional recognition through various media outlets. In 2019, nearly 81,000 eggs were sold through businesses, through direct orders, and at Seven Sorrows Parish. Roughly 6,000 pounds of peanut butter, 870 pounds of butter/margarine, and 4,320 pounds of chocolate were used. This year, 100 volunteers will prepare and distribute the eggs. Orders may be placed by visiting http://bit.ly/7Sorrows Eggs. All eggs will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis while quantities last. Those ordering eggs must select a pickup location, and

choices will include the parish’s weekly drive-through fish fry beginning Friday, March 4. Also, new this year, eggs will be sold at the Egg Store, located in the church parking lot at 280 N. Race St., Middletown. The Egg Store will be open on Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., weather permitting, and while supplies last. Visitors should enter via Race Street for the safety of the school children. Eggs will not be sold at either the parish or school office this year.
