“Our pancake breakfast is one of our favorite traditions because it brings the whole Donegal community together,” said Erin Rupp, president of the Donegal baseball booster club. “When people come out, they’re not just getting a great breakfast - they’re being served by our JV and varsity players themselves. The boys are greeting guests, cooking, serving and thanking people for their support, which really shows the pride and work ethic behind our program.”
The Donegal baseball team will host its community breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, at Mount Joy Mennonite Church, 320 Musser Road, Mount Joy. The
menu will feature pancakes, eggs, sausage, hashbrowns, assorted doughnuts, fruit and beverages.
“It’s a fun, family-friendly morning, a great way to connect with the team and a chance to directly support our players and the season ahead,” Rupp said. “We’re especially
excited this year to welcome Cylo from the Lancaster Stormers, which makes it even more fun for the kids and baseball fans. Whether you’re a longtime supporter or brand new to Donegal baseball, we’d love for you to come out, enjoy breakfast and be part of it.”

Would you like to make a difference in the life of a young mother? It’s easy to have a meaningful impact when you volunteer to be a Sage mentor with Second Grace. The Elizabethtown-based nonprofit will host Sage mentor informational sessions over the next few months. The first will be held on Monday, March 2, at
ECHOS, 105 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown. It will run from 6 to 7 p.m. Additional sessions will be held at the same time and place on Mondays, June 1, Sept. 7 and Dec. 7.
Second Grace began in 2021 when founder Candace Abel was moved to start the organization after volunteering as a Court Appointed Special Advocate and noting that young mothers in
the program could benefit from additional support. The organization pairs mentors, called “Sages,” with young single mothers, called “Graces.”
“Our informational sessions are designed to give potential volunteers a clear, honest picture of what it means to serve as a Sage mentor with Second Grace,” explained Callie Tomblin, program coordinator. “During these

Every week, Scott Feifer gets people to share their innermost thoughts. He’s not a clergyman or a therapist. He’s a writer, and he believes in the power of the pen.
Feifer, who taught language arts for almost 30 years at Hempfield School District, has been leading writing circles since his days as a teacher. He left his public school position in 2020 and has since focused on the transformative power of writing.
Feifer leads writing circles at Manos House, a residential treatment program for young men in Columbia; Blueprints for Addiction Recovery; Domestic Violence Services; and the Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center, among other locations throughout Lancaster and neighboring counties.
“We run from our stories and the trauma and the hard things we’ve experienced,” he said. “But when we write it down, we realize that ultimately, there’s no running from our past.”
Ironically, the man who gets

Proceeds from the breakfast will be used to purchase new practice gear for both the JV and varsity teams; support field maintenance; and fund special team events, including attending Stormers games at Penn Medicine Park.
“Additionally, this helps with our Senior Day recognition, senior gifts and our end-of-the-season banquet,” Rupp said.
Last year’s breakfast exceeded the group’s expectations, she noted.
“We served over 400 people, sold close to $1,000 in merchandise and received almost $700 in donations,” Rupp remarked. “We are hoping to break our record from last year and sell over 400 tickets.”
The past season was a strong one for Donegal baseball, said coach Adam Frey.
“We repeated as Section 3 champions, made it to the league semifinals and qualified for districts,” he commented. “The kids worked hard all season, and it was good to see that pay off.”
The team’s goals for this year are simple.
for the state playoffs,” Frey said, noting that the team has some challenges to overcome. “We’ll face a lot of strong competition. Over half of our schedule is against teams that made the playoffs last year, so we know every game will be a challenge.”
Frey, who is the head varsity coach, is joined in the program by assistant varsity coaches Scott Niehaus and AJ Small.
Rupp acknowledged the people who help to make the pancake breakfast possible.
“This event truly wouldn’t be possible without community support,” she said. “We’re grateful to The Egg Man, Hershey Ag and Kreider Farms for donating the food and to Mount Joy Mennonite Church for generously providing the space. It’s a great example of how this community comes together to support our student-athletes.”
Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, Feb. 24, from 9 to 10:45 a.m. April Heistand, a wife and mother who enjoys being outdoors in her garden, will present “What Can Plants Teach Us About God?” - a discussion
on caring for plants and how people can grow spiritually from the lessons plants can teach. During the program, child care will be provided for infants through prekindergartners. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717-361-2613 or Veronica at 717-626-7603 for more information and a copy of this year’s schedule.
The Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster County will meet on Thursday, Feb. 26, from 1 to 3 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster. Heather Jones, a floral designer from Esbenshade’s Garden Center, will present “New Ideas and Plants for Your Garden.” She will give new ideas for creating contemporary
containers and gardens and will share the latest information about plants and embellishments to enhance a garden.
Guests are welcome to attend, and there is a fee. Refreshments will be provided. For more information, contact Kathy at amishville2@ yahoo.com or visit www.womens gardencluboflancastercounty.com.

people to bare their souls on paper wasn’t always so open.
In 1998, he signed up for a summer writing workshop at Millersville University. As part of the class, students shared their writing with their peers.
“I didn’t want to reveal something so private,” Feifer recalled. “I decided I would go to the first class, but if I was uncomfortable or I didn’t like it, I would leave during the break.”
Not only did he stay for the class, but he also found a new outlet for his emotions.
“Something broke open for me in a way that I hadn’t expected,” he said of his writing. “I wanted my students to taste what I had experienced that summer.”
He began offering writing circles at Hempfield, focusing on ideals expressed in Natalie Goldberg’s “Writing Down the Bones.”
“It’s free writing, stream of con sciousness, just get your thoughts down on paper,” he said. “I had kids writing about their dog dying. Kids wrote about their parents splitting up. They wrote about their dad in prison and wondering what he was doing while they were in class.”

In 2002, Feifer took a sabbatical and began offering his writing circles at various locations around the county, including domestic violence organizations and detention centers.
“Honestly, when I started going to the Youth Intervention Center, I was shocked by how respectful most of the kids in the unit were,” he said. “They were eager to be heard.”
This is Feifer’s 22nd year volunteering at Manos House, where he leads writing circles with young men, facilitates joint groups with women from a local recovery house and incorporates writing into group counseling sessions.
As a former teacher, he said he most enjoys that this writing is not graded or required to fit any standards.
comes out of them. You can hear when somebody’s heart is in their writing.”
His goal is “writing toward freedom, recovery, healing and hope.”
Participants are invited to share their writing out loud during the circles if they’d like to, and Feifer collects the writing and responds to each submission.
“I believe in writing back to them on the back of their paper, by hand,” he said. “I read everything they submit, even if it’s not shared in the circle.”
Feifer, who grew up in Lancaster and graduated from McCaskey High School and Franklin & Marshall College, earned his teaching certificate from Millersville University. He’s been honored with local accolades as a volunteer, including receiving the
he said. Instead, he’s motivated and inspired by the change he sees in the people who join his writing circles.
“Someone will tell me, ‘This was not what I expected, but it was what I needed,’” he said. “Writing like this allows you take off the suit of armor we all wear, let some light in and really be yourself, who you truly are.”
He encourages participants like the young men at Manos House to keep their writings to share with their parole officers as evidence of their growth in the program.
“I tell people, ‘When you take what I’m doing seriously, you’re taking yourself seriously,’” he said. “I hope that through my writing circles, I’m giving people a tool of greater personal awareness and that is giving them power.”

The Elizabethtown/Mount Joy Christian Women’s Connection invites area ladies to its “Uniquely You” brunch to be held on Thursday, March 5, at 9:30 a.m. at Gus’s Keystone Restaurant, 1050 W. Main St., Mount Joy. The musician will be vocalist Lisa Shaver from Hershey. Janis Price from Greencastle, Ind., will be the speaker. Her talk, titled “The Power of Personality,” will be a fun and informative look at personality types. Prepaid reservations must be received by Friday, Feb. 27. sessions, participants learn about our mission, the structure of the program and the role Sages play in supporting single mothers, or Graces, as they work toward stability and long-term independence.”
The session will cover an overview of Second Grace, how the mentorship model works, how Graces are referred to the program and the holistic approach to support offered through the nonprofit.

“We then walk through the Sage role in detail, including expectations, boundaries, training and the support mentors receive along the way,” Tomblin said. “There is also ample time for questions so attendees can determine whether this opportunity is a good fit for them.”
No advance registration is required for the information sessions, and Tomblin hopes people will consider attending to learn more.
“The session is a no-pressure opportunity to learn, ask questions and explore whether this kind of mentorship aligns with your heart and availability,” she said. “Even if you’re unsure, coming to an info session can help you understand how powerful consistent presence and relationships can be in changing lives.”
She also wants Sages to know that they are never alone in their work.

She noted that a good Sage is someone who is compassionate, patient and willing to build a consistent, trusting relationship.
“Sages do not need to be experts or ‘fixers,’” she said. “Instead, they are steady, non-judgmental supporters who are open to learning, listening and walking alongside a Grace mother through real-life challenges. Reliability, empathy and a willingness to commit are far more important than professional credentials.”
Sages support Graces in a variety of ways depending on individual needs, she said.
“This can include regular checkins, encouragement, helping navigate appointments or resources, offering practical life support and modeling healthy relationships,” Tomblin explained. “Sages are a stable presence, someone a Grace knows she can rely on as she works toward her goals.”
The time commitment of a Sage is meaningful but manageable, she said.
“Sages commit to a one- or two-year mentorship relationship and typically spend about six to 10 hours per month connecting with their Grace and participating in program-related meetings or training,” Tomblin explained. “We believe this consistency is critical to building trust and creating lasting impact.”

“We provide training, guidance and ongoing support throughout the mentorship journey,” Tomblin remarked. “Our goal is to build a strong, caring community around both Sages and Graces.”
